Evil begets evil, or so they say. But for whom, and who must pay the price for that evil? Every day people are bullied and tossed aside by a world that wants nothing to do with the weak. Who are the weak? And who are the strong? And who decides? Sheriff Tommy Languis must figure out which one of these he is going to be when his small college town is ravaged by the murder of one of its young students. He soon finds that lurking just beneath the surface of his quiet city is a volcano of emotions ready to burst and destroy anyone that gets in the way. The investigation leads him to discover that bullies aren’t just someone you deal with in school but someone that stays with you in different forms for the rest of your life. He must piece together a puzzle of emotional abuse that cycles around and hits his own home. As Tommy’s personal life is falling apart, he must figure out who is killing off members of the student population, while keeping the reporters and members of a fanatical church from riling up the already emotionally-charged community. Can Tommy solve the mystery before his small town crumbles on itself?
I won this book for free from the Goodreads Book Giveaway contest and I was absolutely hooked from the 1st page. This book was captivating, engrossing, and quite thrilling. The story progressed well and the suspense had me questioning everyone and everything trying to figure out who the killer is. That is, right up until the last few chapters.
Once I began those last few chapters, I struggled to continue as the book became (to me) rushed; not put together well, and "choppy." I felt like the story became a jumbled mess and I started to suffer from whiplash as character emotions and the plot-line went from one extreme to another. IMO, this book was fantastic, until nearing the end. Had those last few chapters been done differently, this book would have received 5 stars from me.
I got this book as part of the Goodreads First Reads program for the purposes of a fair review.
When a woman is reported missing, it’s up to Sheriff Languis to find her. When she’s discovered dead, it’s time to stop the killer.
I rather enjoyed this book until I got to the last couple of chapters. The characters were strong and believable. The story held no blatant plotholes. It was the killer’s motivations really. They seemed to be at odds with the details of his crimes.
Go ahead, and read the story. I’d just stop at chapter 15 if I were you. With a different ending, this could’ve been a fantastic book.
I was one of the fortunate to receive a complimentary copy from GoodReads First Reads and the author.
This is a great, intense story that will keep you guessing at who the bad guy is in a small town. The crimes are quite violent, and affect everyone including the local law enforcement agency.
Definitely worth reading if you enjoy mystery and suspense.
