Every village has a story they tell their young. A story designed to instill fear. These stories may have their roots in the truth, but generations of retelling it result in minor changes. Embellishments. Omissions. In this small village, one part of the story about the forest that looms beyond the cornfield is always told

DO NOT TREAD WHERE THE LEAVES ARE RED.

When a young girl disappears into the forbidden Red Forest, her father rushes to save her. Doubt settles in as he faces the forest he was raised to fear, and he begins to wonder...

What if the stories aren't true? And perhaps more importantly... What if they are?

This might be one of my favourite stories from the whole Red Forest collection! I stopped reading at one point just to put my husband on the spot to ask him if he’d abandon me in the Red Forest like this dickhead James. He told me he would not thankfully (but I’m watching him). I didn’t see that ending coming either! What a great story and a wonderful addition to the collection!

spooky and unexpected

This will not leave me anytime soon. Red leaves are not uncommon and as a hiker I love being out in the woods. But there are always noises, always movements on your periphery, always something to be weary of.

Another tale about the mysterious village and the Red Forest nobody dares to enter. Where did Mary go? What about James and his wife? Why did she go missing after Mary's running into the haunted forest? Extremely eerie folk horror tale. Those are the legends nightmares are made of. Really recommended!
