Decent book for a general postpartum overview of what to expect for a first time mom. Nothing new here if you've had a few kids already. A little too heavy into the "feelings", psychology, and medical side of things. Nominally a "Chriatian" book but I was disappointed by its lack of depth.
Thank you to the author and the publisher for this #gifted book!*
This is such a much-needed book moms! As a mom of 3 little boys, I’ve been through the 4th trimester (or postpartum period) that many times. Rachel is speaking into an area that I think sadly new mamas know little about—all the changes in the postpartum season.
This book has valuable information all pertaining to mom about body changes, bouncing back, emotions, and relationships. There’s even a small section for dad! It’s the book I wish I had before my first baby. And I love that it’s written from a Christian perspective!
If you’re a first time mama (or looking for a baby shower gift) After Baby Comes is the perfect book to graciously prepare you and encourage you in the season ahead 🤍
*I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.
As a third time mom with a larger age gap between my newborn twins and our older kids, I found this book to be a great refresher on postpartum care. I love that she touched on several topics and that it wasn't overly spiritual (and that's coming from a Christian). It was a quick and easy read for me while the babies napped. I definitely plan on gifting this to new mothers in the future.
This is the book you wish you had… to give to your bestie, so you could offer more than just to wash her dishes and take her dogs for a walk. It is one you will wish you had when you had your first or even third baby.
No need to stress! This book is available almost everywhere books are sold.
Rachel’s way of writing is gentle, yet honest. She isn’t here to sugar coat the facts, she is here to walk you through your hardest days, and to answer all of the questions you didn’t know you’d have. From breastfeeding, to Postpartum Depression, to how to make protein rich snacks, to pelvic floor exercises… postpartum is hard enough on its own, let this book be your guide.
It is beautifully written, in a format that allows you to skip around to different chapters, so you can read through any subject you would like, without the stress of feeling you must read the entire book to get anything out of it. (This is a great book for dads to flip through, too!)
All in all, this book is a fantastic resource for any new Mamas, while also having so much to offer to toddler Mamas, and beyond.
This guide to postpartum recovery is full of information and encouragement. The author, Rachel Taylor, draws on her expertise as a postpartum nurse, and she also includes insights from other healthcare professionals, answering common questions about different issues. This book will help expectant mothers prepare for the fourth trimester, and it will also be a great reference guide for new mothers who have already given birth. The table of contents clearly outlines which topics are addressed where, and someone can dip into whatever part is currently relevant to them. You do not have to read the entire book cover-to-cover to benefit from it.
After Baby Comes sets realistic expectations for physical recovery, and shares advice for dealing with different childbirth experiences and physical challenges. The book also addresses breastfeeding, postpartum nutrition (with recipes!), emotional regulation, mental health struggles, faith, and common relationship struggles that arise with family and friends. I appreciated how thorough the section about mental health was, since it addressed struggles like postpartum anxiety and OCD, instead of just addressing postpartum depression. There is also an extra section in the back includes advice for dealing with specific challenges, such as struggling to bond with your baby
This book covers a variety of topics in a well-organized, concise way, and the author's compassionate, caring voice makes this especially helpful. She reflects on the challenges of postpartum life in a very holistic way, addressing every aspect of a mother's well-being, and she shares vulnerable stories from her own life to illustrate different concepts. She shares lots of encouragement, assuring mothers that their struggles are normal, and that there are many strategies available for dealing with different challenges. Taylor also presents a range of options for healthcare, recommending helpful practices from both traditional and alternative medicine.
I only have a few critiques. One is that even though this book is from a Christian publisher, the single section about faith is very short. The light touch makes this book more accessible to general audiences, but Christian readers may feel disappointed that there isn't more of a faith perspective throughout the book. Also, the author primarily writes from the assumption that her readers are in healthy marriages with supportive husbands. She gives great advice for dealing with relationship challenges in that context, but I wish that she had also included specific encouragement for mothers who are struggling in disappointing or harmful marriages, or who don't have a partner at all.
This book is a thorough, insightful guide to a topic that often gets overlooked. The author's expertise, calm confidence, and encouragement can empower mothers during this challenging transition period, and even if someone has already had other children before, this book can still better prepare them for going through postpartum struggles again, with more information and preparation. This is a great resource that will help a lot of people, and it will make a great gift for expectant moms.
I received a free copy from the publisher, and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This book was very informative. Wish I was given it before I had my baby girl, so I could read up on some of the different things. Very easy to understand with lots of tips and tricks for that fourth trimester!
