Book of Enoch Volume II: Son of Man

Rate this book
This is the second volume of the Book of Enoch series. This series is a verse by verse analysis of the ancient manuscript commonly refereed to as the Book of Enoch. This volume focuses of the portions of the text that refer to the Messianic figure - Son of Man. Jesus Christ referred to Himself as the Son of Man more than any other title. I believe that He did so because His teachings are best understood in conjunctions with the writings and doctrines first put forth by Enoch in this epic prediluvian document.

3.5 stars. Once again, I love the cover art of this series.

I like how Rush can see patterns and pull scriptures together to see a bigger picture. He is good at noticing and pointing out details many skip over. He always gives me something to think about and ponder on. I’m sure he’s not always right, and he’d be the first to admit that, but having a different view is helpful. I really like how much he emphasized the same thing President Nelson and others have talked about over and over — that we need to be having our own tutoring sessions with the Holy Ghost and be learning and furthering our spiritual education. The Book of Enoch is one of those texts that can be a catalyst for such revelation. That’s what Rush demonstrates here. I’m glad he had the guts to share his thoughts on, and experiences with, the Book of Enoch. Some of these thoughts are pretty bizarre.

The first half talks about sections of the Book of Enoch. The second half discusses sections from the Doctrine and Covenants that mention the Enochian theme of the Son of Man. This was a pretty genius way to organize the book. I found the teachings in the D&C to be fascinating in the context of the BofE. I am grateful to have been introduced to these ideas.

I appreciate the author getting this information and musings out for people to consider. However, this book suffers from the lack of a good copy editor. It reads as if Rush dictated the chapters and then revised them, but missed a lot of incorrect words and phrases. There were many words that sound similar to the one he meant (the spellcheck misses those), and once again, there are numerous instances of “as such.” Sometimes more than once in a single paragraph, and even in two sentences in a row. I knew to expect this when I bought it, though, so I can’t really complain too much.

I really wish Rush could have found a way to publish these books in a smaller format. It is quite difficult to hold them. I would have really liked a digital version, but I understand why he didn’t want to go that route because of the content.
