Such a quick easy read. It's been on my shelf for a while and thought it was about time I read it. I wasn't expecting the book to be this good. Set in Manhattan and Ireland following the story of two sisters with many twists along the way. I will certainly read more from this author.

Twin sisters Sinéad and Sheila Fields have started their own millinery business. They are just about to hit fame and fortune after a famous actress wears one of their creations to a BAFTA awards ceremony when Sheila suddenly disappears without trace. Her car is found abandoned with her handbag inside. After several months without any news the family reluctantly have to accept that Sheila is dead, possibly by her own hand. Her twin Sinéad is devastated and lets the business slide into ruin – along with her relationship with boyfriend Dylan. The two sisters were so close and Sinéad can’t accept that Sheila would deliberately wish to cause so much hurt. Her younger brother Max intervenes to try and salvage the business and this is really where the story starts with disclosures and coincidences that eventually form the crux of the tale.
This is the first Colette Caddle book that I have read (although I do have a few of her earlier books in my collection - I hadn't realised that she had written so many, this being her 14th novel). What attracted me (apart from the gorgeous cover) was the mystery element of the missing twin and the dual location of Ireland and New York. The story kept me engrossed, whether we were in Dublin or Central Park.
I really enjoyed Colette’s writing. The Fields family are well drawn with complex characters and you are drawn in to the family relationships and dynamics, each of them dealing with loss and grief in their own way. The mother died tragically by drowning years before when the twins and their brother Max were quite young and the father has never really got over the loss of his wife. His wife’s sister, Bridie, stepped in to look after the family, and although she did an adequate job, she was never a very loving person and the lack of affection was felt by all the siblings. Bridie is now suffering from dementia; she has a past of her own that is partly shrouded in mystery and appears to be the holder of long held family secrets.
There is a little bit of everything in this book, mystery, family relationships, secrets and romance. There are some fabulous supporting characters – Krystie was a wonderful creation and came into the lives of the Fields family like a breath of fresh air, her relationship with her own family felt believable and was one that perhaps many people could identify with. Very cleverly, the author threw in a few seeds of doubt here and there - just enough to make you wonder about certain characters and whether they were all that they seemed.
Despite the mystery element, this is not a suspense thriller but neither is it light and fluffy. I was completely engrossed in the lives of the Fields family and as desperate as they were to find out the truth about Sheila’s disappearance. We see a family that has been torn in two by loss and the repercussions of keeping secrets. This was a really enjoyable story and I and look forward to reading more by Colette Caddle.

First We Take Manhattan is the thirteenth novel from Colette Caddle. Unlucky for some but not Colette, she has played another blinder and this is a fantastic book from start to finish. I loved every page and didn’t want it to end reading it within a day. Right from the opening line I was hooked and lost all track of time immersed in the world of the Field sisters and a wonderful cast of supporting characters. This is a gripping, intriguing novel full of secrets, tension and mystery focusing on a family who have many things to hide which has devastating consequences on all aspects of their lives. Of course some romance thrown in along the way all helps to create an enthralling novel.
It’s hard to explain much about the story without giving away spoilers but this book introduces us to twins Sinéad and Sheila who are just on the cusp of making it big in the fashion industry designing hats when Sheila mysteriously disappears . Her car with her purse and passport is found abandoned near the coast and after much searching she is presumed dead - drowned at sea even though no body was ever found. When we meet Sinéad she is devastated and distraught at the loss of her sister. She is spiralling out of control leaving the millinery business to fall to rack and ruin. Her boyfriend Dylan does his best to help her get back on track but is Sinéad willing to listen or will she lose Dylan too? How can she go on without her twin sister to guide and support her?
The loss of Sheila is tearing the family apart but at the same time secrets are becoming exposed making family members realise not everyone is as they seem and we all have secrets we keep and for very good reason. In the beginning I really wanted to shout at Sinéad to just get on with it, get out of your small world of despair and try and move on because that was what your sister would have wanted but as the story progressed we see a slow change in Sinead thanks to Krystie.
Krystie is like a ray of light and fresh air when she enters the story. She is a bright eager, vivacious young girl who having been fired from her alterations job in Manhattan returns home to Ireland searching for work. Pure chance has her meeting Sinéad and soon she is putting her design skills to good use hoping to change the fortunes of the hat shop whilst maybe experiencing some romance along the way. But something is nagging at Krystie a familiar face she glimpsed in New York - should she say anything or would it hinder not help this family in crisis and freefall?
Sheila’s dad Kieran and brother Max cannot believe Sheila has gone so suddenly from their lives especially as tragedy had previously befallen the family in years gone by. Philip a politician in the Irish government is Sheila’s husband but Sinéad has her suspicions as to how honourable he really is. This cast of supporting characters were superb and each had their own problems to overcome which only added to the overall tension and suspense through the book.
Colette Caddle has created a cast of engrossing characters. I was rooting for each one to get their happy ending. But there were so many twists and turns (in a good way) I just didn’t know how the story was going to end. Yes you were drip fed hints throughout the story making you believe one thing or another but not everyone was as they seemed. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, another twist which I did not see coming was thrown in, which made me re-evaluate everything and everyone and kept me guessing right up until the very end. If you haven’t read anything by Colette Caddle before, this book is the perfect place to start, it was a thrilling rollercoaster of a read. If you want a fast paced, riveting story then First We Take Manhattan is the book for you.

Following their graduation, the sisters decided to set up their own millinery business and after an actress decided to wear one of their hats to the BAFTA’s, business seems to be booming. Then, unexpectedly, Sheila mysteriously disappears and all that is left of her are her car and her bag. Everyone assumes she probably killed herself, but the body was never found. Sinead is completely devastated and finds it difficult to go on with her life without her twin sister by her side. Eventually, Sinead hires someone new to help out at the hat shop, but as things are finally starting to look up, some family secrets come to the surface and Sinead once again starts to doubt whether Sheila really killed herself...
‘First We Take Manhattan’ is Colette Caddle’s thirteenth novel and I personally think it is her best one so far. One of the things I enjoyed most about this novel is that it kept me guessing and managed to surprise me until the very last pages. This is also why this review might not include as much information about the book as usual, because I simply don’t want to ruin the reading experience for others. The plotline is incredibly captivating, the cast of characters is interesting and diverse, and there’s also a lovely touch of romance in the book. Sinead is a fabulous protagonist; I couldn’t help but warm to her and I’m sure many readers will experience the same feeling. Next to Sinead, there’s a wonderful cast of supporting characters. I especially loved the character of Krystie, who is hired by Sinead to help out in the hat shop. All the supporting characters are there for a reason and really added different aspects to the story as a whole.
The novel is quite fast-paced and you have to stay focused in order to not miss anything. I really enjoyed Colette Caddle’s writing; she managed to catch my attention from the very first chapter and I didn’t want to put the book down before I had finished it. As I already mentioned, I don’t want to give too much away, but I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good women’s fiction read; you will not be disappointed! ‘First We Take Manhattan’ is an incredibly intriguing, well-written and thoroughly enjoyable novel that will keep you guessing until the very end; a book that comes highly recommended!

What a fantastic read this book was I really enjoyed it..... Not wanting to give away to much of the story, it's about a family who are literally been torn apart with family secrets and it shows the consequences from this, theirs an air of mystery, romance and most definitely "what's happening next"? Twins Sinead & Sheila with their very successful business, however Sheila goes missing and nobody is sure if she is dead or alive as no body was ever found, their brother Max and their father Kieran and not forgetting Phillip, Sheila's husband who is involved in politics and of course one can't forget Krystie who for me was a delight in this book she was like a ray of sunshine and added so much to the story itself..... As I was reading this book I could picture each character in my head and visualise the whole story itself as it progressed and that to me is what I call a great book. Buy it you won't be disappointed and you just might find you love it like me x'

WOW! – What a read
The book focuses on Twins Sinead and Sheila who run a Millinery business and have recently had a celebrity wear one of their creations to the BAFTAs.
Sheila goes missing and the family are sure she is dead but her twin sister Sinead believes she is still alive.
Krystie returns home to Dublin and is lucky to get a job working with Sinead, although whilst working she spots a familiar face – someone she believes she has met before. Sinead puts all of her efforts into building up the company profile and makes it her mission to find Sheila, although she never expected to undercover some big family secrets which no one has talked about for years.
This is a really great book with plenty of twists and turns. It kept me entertained and eager to find out the family secrets.
I would happily recommend this book.

This story follows a set of twins from Ireland, 1 day Sheila disappears leaving Sinead and her family devastated after the search for her body is called off.
As the story goes on we are introduced to new characters the twins brother Max and Sheila's new member of staff Kristie who has recently moved back from Manhattan and informs the family she thinks she saw Sheila leading them all to hope she will one day return.
When a beloved Aunt dies there world is turned upside down.
I must say I was totally shocked and amazed with this story I in no way saw the ending coming this way and was totally hooked reading and devouring in 1 sitting!
A must read for all, well done Colette I look forward to more from you in the future.

Loved this book. It captures you from the start and is filled with so many twists and turns some happy and delightful some utterly shocking!!! Its difficult to say any more without dropping in spoilers. But fans of colette caddle wont be disappointed a very enjoyable read.

Very hard to write a review of this book without spoilers but suffice to say it is a thoroughly enjoyable read that will capture you and I defy anyone to fall asleep when there are 150 pages to read.

4.5 stars! Fab book. Couldn't put it down- a page turner! I kept guessing who was contacting New York, who was K's father etc etc. But I was wrong on most things. I read the book in 48 hrs! Colette Caddle never lets us down!

This is the first novel by Irish author Colette Caddle that I’ve read but I shall certainly look out for more. Eight months after the mysterious disappearance of her twin sister, Sheila, Sinead Fields, still isn’t able to come to terms with the fact that she might be dead. Without Sheila’s business acumen, their shared millinery business is on the verge of collapse and Sinead herself is not much better. At this stage, I wasn’t sure I was going to like Sinead but fortunately she pulled herself together, thanks to her brother Max, a prosperous businessman, sorting out the business for her. Meanwhile, in Manhattan, Krystie Kelliman spots someone she thinks she recognises from her college days. After she is sacked from her job, she is forced to return home to Dublin where she starts working for Sinead’s revived business. When she tells Sinead about the person she thought she’d seen in Manhattan, the family decide to re-open their investigations. One of those on whom suspicions fall, is Sheila’s husband, Philip, a prominent politician. From the beginning, Sinead is convinced he has something to hide. Although told from various points of view, who is speaking is made very clear so is easily followed. The plot is a little more convoluted but worth sticking with as it turned out to be a very good read.

WHAT I SAY
Well what can i say about this fab book . I have read it twice now i just loved it . I do love NewYork it my favourite place i been a few times now . The book about a family that have been torn apart . The story got love , mystery , secrets, romance ,family , NewYork and Dublin what more could you want . It got a lot of twist and turns It will keep you hooked
I loved the way the story was told i liked the setting of new york and Dublin
The family problems were told from most of the character point of view we get to hear their different takes on them it was very touching in parts and sad then fun in other ways to . You got lots of heartbreak , suspicion and a few confusion in the plot too .
The family had lost their mum she drown when they were young their dad was so shocked and sad .A aunt came to stay with them she had a very sad life to but what was the dad hide from them ?
Sheila one of the twins had just disappear her handbag and car were found on a sea road i not sure why any one would just leave their bag they was a suspicion of suicide it still hanging in the air now but why would she just do that ? It not like her at all
She had it all a nice house and good husband . The hat making business was very successful why would she just go like that ? You will be wondering why i was i was just hooked on the story to see what was going to happen next it just grips you into it . Sinead not coping with out sheila the hat business they set up is now in a mess she can not run it right with her sister she losing sales she just not coping with life she finding it very tough all her life a bit of a mess she not sure what she doing .Max the brother steps in to help her i really like him he was a very nice guy he want to get this business back on top they were at one point the top hat makes a actress worn one of their hats to the baftas they were on tv in the new paper everyone know their name
Sheila was the more serious one i think she was the leader she know what she want and she did it . The connection between the twins was very true i got friends that are twins they just seem to feel if something not right or some thing wrong just like Sinead did she did not think sheila was dead it was that bond they have it very special . The book told you the story of them as kids which was good to hear i was just hooked to hear all about them now and in the past
Sinead was more outgoing i say but now she just feeling helpless she missing a part of her she got to get her life back on track i just wanted to help as if she was my friend that how the story made me feel one day a girl call krystie walks into her life i loved her she was my favourite character she was working in manhattan in a sewing shop she was sacked she got no money to pay her rent she had no choice but to come back home to Dublin
Sinead takes her on to work in the shop she was a very talented designer her eye for detail was just fab . She make all her own clothes they sounded so well made i can see her design in my mind i loved to hear about her designs.The hats she made were fab her and Sinead worked so well together they seem to bring out the best in each other they could make this business one of the best again .
One day she see a photo of a lady omg she seen that lady in manhattan looking in shop windows she took notice cause she like her style
Now the story take on the path to find her we got a few if and why . Who will help them ?
The book so well written the plot just fab the story just flowed and you flowed along with it
I like all the characters but i was not sure on a few i bet you guess who i mean ?
Not all families are perfect the book shows you that all the family member play a big part in the book which i like .It a real page turner it will keep you guessing right up to the end but all the family secret do come out how do they cope with what they find out ? All family have problems we all pull together to sort them out it so touching a very heart felt read i got so emotionally involved in the story it just gripped me from the first page to the last

The family problems were told from most of the character point of view we get to hear their different takes on them it was very touching in parts and sad then fun in other ways to . You got lots of heartbreak , suspicion and a few confusion in the plot too .
The family had lost their mum she drown when they were young their dad was so shocked and sad .A aunt came to stay with them she had a very sad life to but what was the dad hide from them ?
Sheila one of the twins had just disappear her handbag and car were found on a sea road i not sure why any one would just leave their bag they was a suspicion of suicide it still hanging in the air now but why would she just do that ? It not like her at all
She had it all a nice house and good husband . The hat making business was very successful why would she just go like that ? You will be wondering why i was i was just hooked on the story to see what was going to happen next it just grips you into it . Sinead not coping with out sheila the hat business they set up is now in a mess she can not run it right with her sister she losing sales she just not coping with life she finding it very tough all her life a bit of a mess she not sure what she doing .Max the brother steps in to help her i really like him he was a very nice guy he want to get this business back on top they were at one point the top hat makes a actress worn one of their hats to the baftas they were on tv in the new paper everyone know their name
Sheila was the more serious one i think she was the leader she know what she want and she did it . The connection between the twins was very true i got friends that are twins they just seem to feel if something not right or some thing wrong just like Sinead did she did not think sheila was dead it was that bond they have it very special . The book told you the story of them as kids which was good to hear i was just hooked to hear all about them now and in the past
Sinead was more outgoing i say but now she just feeling helpless she missing a part of her she got to get her life back on track i just wanted to help as if she was my friend that how the story made me feel one day a girl call krystie walks into her life i loved her she was my favourite character she was working in manhattan in a sewing shop she was sacked she got no money to pay her rent she had no choice but to come back home to Dublin
Sinead takes her on to work in the shop she was a very talented designer her eye for detail was just fab . She make all her own clothes they sounded so well made i can see her design in my mind i loved to hear about her designs.The hats she made were fab her and Sinead worked so well together they seem to bring out the best in each other they could make this business one of the best again .
One day she see a photo of a lady omg she seen that lady in manhattan looking in shop windows she took notice cause she like her style
Now the story take on the path to find her we got a few if and why . Who will help them ?
The book so well written the plot just fab the story just flowed and you flowed along with it
I like all the characters but i was not sure on a few i bet you guess who i mean ?
Not all families are perfect the book shows you that all the family member play a big part in the book which i like .It a real page turner it will keep you guessing right up to the end but all the family secret do come out how do they cope with what they find out ? All family have problems we all pull together to sort them out it so touching a very heart felt read i got so emotionally involved in the story it just gripped me from the first page to the last

This was okay, there were a few parts that didn't ring true like why Sheila left (pretty drastic to stage your own death because of that), and Karl finding out he was conceived of rape (he seems nonplussed about it which I'm not sure is a normal reaction). It might have felt more dramatic if it had been further into the book when you found out if Sheila was alive or not (I think it was about chapter 3). I was interested to find out what family secrets there were but it wasn't as suspenseful as other books I've read that had a similar plot.

This book was truly amazing. It started a bit slowly and I came to a point when I thought it was boring, but when I got further in the book I loved it so much. I loved the relationships and the passion for there jobs. The end was so lovely and mind blowing!

I enjoyed the story but thought the ending was very dissappointing. All that mystery and intrigue ended in a very unexciting reveal. Shame.

Before really getting into my review, I would like to say a massive thank you to the publishers for accepting me for this title via Net Galley, and of course to the author, Colette Caddle. Without her incredible ability to create such a brilliant story, I would be left with nothing to say about First We Take Manhattan. Fortunately for me, I have tons to say! Wahooo!
First We Take Mahattan begins after Sheila's disappearance, but the after-effects of her twin disappearing into thin air are still playing havoc with remaining twin Sinead's mind and emotions. Instantly, I was hooked, and I think that this was a great way to begin the novel. My brain was ticking and I was wondering all about Sheila and what had happened to her. Sheila and Sinead had opened up their own hat making business and things had been going great before Sheila disappeared, but without her twin by her side, Sinead is beginning to let things slip and she just can't find the motivation to do the little things, like answering customer calls and even just getting out of bed in the morning. When Sinead's brother Max steps in and discovers how downhill the business is actually slipping, he decides to take action and helps his sister to get back on top of things.
What I really, really loved about First We Take Manhattan was the deep, unbreakable connection between the two twins, even though Sheila is presumed dead. Although the story is very firmly set in the present day, the author takes us back every now and again to Sinead and Sheila's childhood. The contrasts between the twins are evident; Sheila had always been very serious and mature for her age even as a little girl, whereas Sinead had been a little bit more on the wild side. Despite their differences, they were incredibly close, and because of this, the fact that Sheila is missing in the present day just makes it all the more powerful, moving and emotional. Coming from a big family myself, I couldn't even begin to put myself into Sinead's shoes and feel the things that she was feeling. I would be utterly heartbroken, and probably end up treading the same path that Sinead did. I completely understood Sinead's right from the very beginning.
As well as the storyline concerning Sheila and Sinead, there's also the character of Krystie, and she is introduced into the plot a little later on. Krystie kinda' has her own thing going on, but I LOVED watching her life intertwine with Sinead's. It was just fabulous. After just being fired from her job in Sew Splendid, where suits and gowns are altered, Krystie has no idea what she's now going to do. She can't continue to pay the rent on her apartment, so her only option is to return home to Ireland. What's brilliant about Krystie though, is that she's a very talented designer with a keen eye for detail and a talent for creating gorgeous clothes, including her own. So, with the whole talented designer thing, can you see where the story's going? ;)
I loved the whole mystery involved within this novel, the wondering and the curiosity that Colette drew from me as I turned the pages. Although Sheila wasn't present within the plot itself, I still felt like she was a very important, prominent character. Her disappearance was constantly hanging in the atmosphere, and as the characters spoke of her and Colette took us back in the past, I felt like I knew Sheila just as much as the others.
As well as the mystery, I felt that another huge theme within this novel was family. Sheila and Sinead's family was quite a big one, and not only do we meet Max, Sinead and hear about Sheila, but Colette also shakes us around and allows us to see from their father Kieran's point of view too! I found this fascination and being allowed to see the same story from so many different people was just brilliant. It really brought each character to life and I truly felt that this was a real, true-to-life family going through a crisis.
Overall, I really enjoyed First We Take Manhattan. It was fast-paced, interesting, and the characters were incredibly like-able. It was a pleasurable read and I would definitely love to read more of Colette's writing. She has such a gorgeous story-telling ability that makes you feel so involved in the plot and the character's lives.

I had never had the pleasure of reading any of Colette Caddle's work prior to receiving this book. I am so glad that I won this on Facebook and was able to immerse myself inside the fascinating world that Colette Caddle created.
This book was a lovely story about a family who has been ripped apart by the sudden loss of Sheila. With no body and no hard concrete evidence it makes it hard for this family to move oThe family is stuck between mourning the loss of Sheila to hanging onto the thread of hope that she's still out there. The question is, if Sheila is alive, what could possibly make her want to leave her old life behind.
Colette Caddle so masterfully told this story. You know, it's hard for me to know exactly what it is that makes me enjoy a particular book so much. This time though, it occured to me what it was that had me so hooked. Ms. Caddle was able to leave an air of mystery throughout the entire book, when you found one piece of the puzzle you discoverd another piece missing. This kept you unable to put it down, wanting to discover the answers to the every unfolding mysteries that were uncovered.
That's when you know it's a good book, when an author can give you JUST enough information to where you're not feeling exasperated, but you are working out the answers in your own head and SOMETIMES you might be right, but are thrilled when you discover you just THOUGHT you knew. That's how it was for me with this book. There were some elements that it didn't take me long to figure out, or well that I had at some point figured out prior to the answer being displayed.
Yet, there were other times when I was just DEAD wrong. It happens OCCASSIONALLY that I'm wrong :) I LOVED this book. I loved the characters that Ms. Caddle created and the way she integrated them into the plot. It was a story that felt seamless. It was a relief after some of the books I've read (none that have been reviewed here) where the characters' weren't fully developed and the plots just seemed rushed or there was no "climax".
In "First We Take Manhattan", you have a lovely story of a family broken, long kept secrets that are uncovered, newfound loves, friendship and self-empowerment and discovering what it is that makes you happy is something we all need to find and hold onto if and when we find it.
This is a DEFINITE 5 star book! I cannot reitterate how much I loved this lovely, lovely story! It doesn't appear to yet be available on Kindle, however it doesn't take that long to order and receive it from the UK or Ireland! I got this book within a week of winning it! If you haven't ever read Irish or UK literature / chick lit, I'm telling you that there's something so thrilling about the way these women tell stories! I have found myself searching for new Irish and UK authors when my favs have all been read!

Sheila disappears at the moment the business she and her sister Sinéad have built is starting to become successful. Sinéad is heartbroken and she misses her sister every minute of the day. I really enjoyed this book, it had great characters, good plotline and plenty to keep you guessing and wondering until all was revealed.
The story focuses on the millinery business run by identical twins Sinead and Sheila. The business is going from strength to strength until Sheila disappears and is presumed dead. While her husband and the rest of the family are prepared to accept this scenario Sinead refuses and is convinced she is still alive. This belief is strengthened when she employs Krystie who has just returned to Dublin after an unsuccessful attempt to break into the New York fashion world. Krystie is convinced she has seen Sheila in New York and this opens up a can of worms as Sinead insists on trying to track down her sister.
As the story unfolds we are drawn into a world of family secrets from the past and present. It is a story that is fast paced and engaging and I'd happily recommend it. It's an ideal book to take on holiday or curl up with on a Sunday afternoon. Either way I'm happy to recommend it and look forward to reading more as this was my first introduction to Colette Caddle.

I enjoyed this book so much, I couldn’t put it down! The story was very well plotted with many twists that you wouldn’t have seen coming! The characters were very well crafted and really interesting. What I loved most about this book was the way Colette put together the main plot and all the smaller subplots. Everything in the story was there for a reason – the smallest event was significant and each character had a role to fulfill.
So you have Manhattan, some nice twists in the plot and brilliantly crafted characters, add a bit of drama and mystery and you know you’re in for a treat!
It was the first book by Colette Caddle that I read. It caught my eye because it had this word in the title that I couldn’t just ignore…(you probably know how much I love New York..?). I was pleasantly surprised with this book I wasn't expecting it to be so very good. The characters are so real and the writing very good.
Identical twins Sinead and Shiela Fields make hats and fascinator type headpieces together. They have always done everything together and they have a small but reliable clientelle and then one of their creations is worn by someone famous and the business takes off. we meet Sinead after her twin has dissapeared and they have had no luck in finding her, the Guardia seem to think she drowned as her car was found near the water.
Krystie is looking for a job after she was made redundant and stumbles on Sinead's business quite by chance, sinead employs her and Krystie is an invaluble asset to the business but she will never replace her twin and she continues to mourn her loss.
I don't want to spoil it so its difficult to say more except the story is captivating and I didn't want to put it down.

An original story set in 2 places and depth to the characters which contributed to its credibility as you get to know their thought processes, doubts and motivations. Listened to it as audio book and at first wasn't sure about the narrators voice but she was perfect, and I will miss tuning in each day.

This is an easy chick lit book set around twins working in the millinery business.There are a few twists and turns which I easily worked out but felt the final explanations a little weak for such a dramatic start. But read for yourself, it's a quick read and entertaining.
