For many people at Pierce Point and the rest of Washington State, the upcoming New Year is a time for hope, and belief that life is going to improve and the Collapse will end. For Grant Matson and the 17th Irregulars, the New Year means only one thing – war. The time has come, and they have received their orders from HQ. Grant must come clean with Lisa and tell her the truth about his work as he plans to abandon his family once again. While the Loyalists drunkenly and selfishly celebrate New Year’s Eve, the Patriots mount a surprise attack on Frederickson, making way for the 17th Irregulars to move toward Olympia. As the battle moves on, the men quickly realize the importance of everything they have been training for when they find themselves ambushed. Doing everything he can to suppress his own fear and lead the 17th Irregulars, Grant motivates them to persevere as they fight for liberty and restoring the country to the greatness it once was.
I must admit that at this point (chapter 8 in this 10 "book" series) that I want this series to just end. The writing remains plain. The characters are uni-dimensional and uninspiring. It is not horrible, but at the same time it is not terribly interesting or revealing.
Everything (and I mean pretty much everything) happens in favor of the main character. To pretend that not everything is perfect, the author inserts a (semi-nonsensical) break up/argument between the main character and his wife. But aside from that, things are smooth for the "Patriots".
Again, the main character is guided by the "Outside Voice" (An omnipotent auditory hallucination taking the role of a god character that never fails to provide optimal guidance. A tool that removes all the difficulty out of difficult decision making).
Both the "good" guys and the "bad" guys are simplistic black and white character cut outs.
Nothing in the book is sophisticated or particularly interesting, and much I find a bit ridiculous.
If I hadn't already bought the last two books, I would have stopped. And its still only my OCD that has me continuing. (And presumably these last few "books" are the culmination/climax of this series)
For a guy so adept at leading (his part) of an insurrection, golden boy Grant sure can disregard the needs and feelings of his family at the drop of a hat. (Now for the second time) In reality, those two characteristics wouldn't likely be found in the same person. It's like the author manufactures marital anomosity only to bring SOME sort of drama to this guy amid a story where mostly all other things fall right into place....it's unbelievable...on a few levels. Are doctors known for bei g morons? Can Mrs Matson not fathom this strange new world now months into post-collapse. Give this woman some credit, please. I think, most people could weigh this remarkable situation and see it for it's peculiarity.... and wish their spouse Godspeed. It's a farce.
This wasn’t my favorite book of the series but it brought up more emotion than any other. It’s the only one I read in one day! I don’t recall tears in my eyes in any of the others but this one moved me there several times. Read em all.
I love this series, I would have to if I've read 8 books in the series. That said the first half of the book was like the previous one. It left me begging for the book to speed up. Multiple chapters of why are we doing this. The second half took off and left me wanting more. More I tell you! Book nine, come on!
Lots of battle action for the battle fiction guys. This book does seem to be following a more realistic premise set out in the other books in the series. It's not all whiz bang killing everyone who isn't in my crew type of fiction that many people like. It's a more toned down version with a focus on trying to do what is right. The protagonists don't always do the right thing, but they try.
Better than a lot of the books in the series. As with most of the books on the series, this one was too short for the price you have to pay. It is a great series. I just wish I wouldn't have started it due to the cost.
