I Found Christmas Lights Slithering Up My Street was a fast-paced read, easily completed in one sitting. However, I seem to be in the minority here with all the higher star ratings, the writing style wasn’t for me. It felt repetitive at times, I get that the story was supposed to be told from the POV of a young boy, but *something* wasn’t clicking to me. When there is that much repetition, it is hard for the narrative to feel like it is progressing at times. All these short chapters throughout started off in similar ways with the same descriptions!

A positive was the theme of grief around Christmas-time as the main character Harold deals with the loss of his baby sister Erica. His parents aren’t really wanting to celebrate Christmas after losing her and it is impacting Harold’s own enjoyment of the holiday season. This theme kept me reading and engaged but I was hoping for more entertaining horror here overall.

This wasn't a new favorite, but it was fun! I loved the premise of the story, but the writing left me a little confused at times. Maybe it was just difficult for me to imagine some of the things the author was describing (and to be fair, I do have covid brain fog right now, so that could be on me). All I know is that I thought this was a pretty alright Christmas horror story and I'm looking forward to reading more from this author soon!

Oh my, this bored me out of my skull. I know this is just a novella and the premise was kind of interesting; however, I didn’t like the writing style at all. It was confusing at times, and I swear, the constant “not red, not purple” annoyed and irked me so much I wanted to ditch the whole thing altogether.

I liked the idea, but this just wasn’t for me.

This was a short, steady paced holiday read. It started out like a grief horror but quickly turned into something a bit more sinister.

It wasn't at all spooky to me, but there were some unsettling scenes. It read more like a children's horror book to me, but I didn't mind it. It was also written well and easy to follow.

4/5 🌟

Super weird, so you’d think this would be something I’d love. But I tried to read this two separate times through out December and I just can’t manage to ever care enough to finish it.

Douglas can not wait to celebrate Christmas this year. The only problem is that his parents do not want to celebrate it. Last year, his sister Erica died during the Christmas holidays. Since then, his parents seem to have forgotten that they still have a son.

He is determined to decorate some of the empty houses in the neighbourhood and he thinks he is the luckiest kid in the world, when he discovers some beautiful and strange Christmas lights. However by using those lights and pulling them out, he will be also releasing something evil that will target the neighbourhood and kill them all one by one.

Together with his friends David and Harold, they will have to figure out a way of getting rid of the evil they have unleashed before it is too late.

A tale of grief, loss of identity and finding your way in a world that only sees you as the boy whose sister died. As the kids fight against these supernatural forces, we will reflect on family, life and the people that remain after a loved one is taken away from them way too soon.

A really fun Christmas story with a lot of heart. Perfect for people that love fantasy/supernatural horror stories.

This is another of those books that make you realize that you may never look at Christmas the same way again. It started off pretty sad though. But then the chaos began. It had its spooky moments for sure. Felt more like a children's horror book though than the previous two.

My biggest complaint: it comes across as a middle school book when the content is obviously adult. The way the characters talked, how they thought, what they did…it was way too middle school vibes for me and none of the characters seemed relatable.

Good but not great. It desperately needed editing, you can tell that this is a self published little novella from miles away. The ideas and the premise were freaking brilliant, very creative and original (the mix of Christmas and was pretty brilliant)..... but that's where the positives end.

The characters are horror-movie-stupid, insisting on doing stuff or NOT doing stuff because otherwise we'd have no plot. Our main character has basically no personality at all besides wanting to show his parents the house he decorated, even when all hell has broken loose around him. Yes, this is a grieving 11 year old child, but his single-mindedness was ridiculous in those circumstances, so one note it was almost like.... he was being puppeted by an author for convenience instead of being anything close to a real person! Shocker.

The writing is very confusing, vague, and repetitive. Sometimes I could barely tell what was happening, what exactly the characters just did (), where they're going, what the neighborhood looked like, why this incomprehensible action made perfect sense to them besides For The Plot (), nothing. The narrative was more focused on the 9374629 mention of "not-red, not-purple lights" over and over. We got it the first 9374628 times.

(Petty moment: they could've also made the lights on the cover these (not-)colours as well given the endless mentions, but I guess that didn't look Christmas-y enough)

Lastly, I wasn't a fan of the ending.

Let's wrap this up (in not-red not-purple Christmas lights). The ideas are all there but it so so so needed editing. I really like that there's still independent self publishing authors, especially for horror, but that's not an excuse for subpar quality. Could've been brilliant.

As soon as I saw this cover, I immediately grabbed a copy and started reading it. Christmas horror is 100% my style this year.

Douglas finds Christmas lights, blinking in not-red and not-purple, within the storm drain. He doesn’t know why, but he feels drawn to them and fishes them out. They then cause havoc throughout their little town’s tacky lights competition.

This was pretty much what I gathered from the blurb, and it delivers on it quite well. What I didn’t expect, was the heavy gut punch of grief that this short story packs. I recently attended an indie author’s presentation on Victorian grief, and they spoke of how sons, daughters, siblings are often pushed aside in their grief, making way for the parents first. This exemplified that explanation fantastically. Douglas is dealing with his grief silently, because he is seen as the absence rather than the survival, the continuation after loss. It was really well done and added a much needed layer to the story.

Maybe it’s just me, but the storm drain/kids fighting to save a town when the parents don’t believe them felt very reminiscent of IT to me, as well as a blend of others.

Personally a 4/5*, check this one out!

My third read in the series and I'd put this one in second place. Kinda weird reading this in summer but I still had a good time with it. It kind of gave Stephen King's IT vibes but make it Christmas. Overall, a solid addition to the series!

This felt like nostalgia twisted into nightmare. I loved all of the Christmas references and enjoyed the tension throughout. This story was like if the Neverending story took place on Christmas Eve in one subdivision. Very fun and nostalgic.

If you’re looking for a quick read that packs an emotional punch, I Found Christmas Lights Slithering Up My Street by Ben Farthing is the perfect choice! Despite its fun and quirky cover, this book is actually an emotionally heavy read. I was really impressed by the depth the author was able to fit into such a small package (less than 130 pages). I cared about the characters, I was creeped out, and I experienced a range of emotions. I’m definitely a fan and will buy any other “I Found” books Ben Farthing writes!

Horror, for me, is taking the everyday and adding in creepy yet believable occurrences that make your skin crawl. While this idea in this book is creative, it’s not very believable for me so I didn’t get the tingly feelings I love to feel while reading horror. The narrative was also very repetitive, which took me out of the story even more. The story was interesting and held my attention, but the creep factor wasn’t there for me.

I've gotten to the point where, when Mr. Farthing comes out with a book, I drop everything else I'm reading or doing to read it. This one did not disappoint and I'm so thrilled with it. It is so strange, unsettling, emotional, and tense. A great book to read while it's snowing with a nice cup of cocoa right before decorating for the holidays.

My book club picked this for November for a short read, and it was fun. We tend to accidentally pick some cheesy and awful books at time, but I'm happy to say that's not the case here. The title is humorous and the cover fun, the writing easy and flowing to follow, the intensity of grief well explored for a short book and considering the age of the protagonist, and it does that dark but uplifting touch of Christmas. Great for a short horror christmas novella.

I’ve seen a few of Ben’s books floating around my feed and I’ve always been pretty curious about them. So I went ahead and ordered 3 of his books. I decided to start with this one because, hey, it’s the holiday season.

This gave major Goosebumps vibes and I think R.L Stine would probably enjoy this story.

It also has some focus on dealing with grief during the holidays which is a very real thing for a lot of people.

It was definitely a creative read with some light horror elements. I’m looking forward to reading his other books.

On Christmas Eve, Douglas and his two friends, David and Harold are decorating one of the newly built houses in their development, when Douglas sees lights coming from the storm drain. He realizes they are Christmas string lights, moving through the sewer and, deciding to use them for his decor, pulls them to the surface.
After a family tragedy last Christmas, Douglas's parents aren't celebrating this year, and Douglas will do anything to change that and make his parents love Christmas again - and hopes to do so by surprising them with his holiday decor via a walk in the neighborhood. When Douglas sneaks back out later in the night to plug his decorations back in, in preparation for viewing with his parents, he is shocked to see the lights from the sewer wrapped around all eight homes in the development, instead of just the original one he decorated.
It is very apparent there is something wrong with these lights, and it's not long before Douglas realizes the lights aren't the only thing to come up from the sewer that night. Throughout the night, the terrified friends will fight off ever-expanding strings of Christmas lights, make their way through trees growing dozens of feet per second, narrowly escape carolers singing without mouths, be chased by reindeer decorations and attacked by a jack-in-the-box.
Douglas wonders if he caused all this, by pulling the lights up top - and if so, what he and his friends can possibly do to stop them from spreading. No matter what it takes, Douglas is determined to fight the invasive lights and restore his parents holiday spirit.

This book is the last one I needed to read in the I Found Horror series by this author! I started with I Found Puppets which had me hooked from page 1 and I could not put it down. The I Found a Circus Tent had a little slower of a start but definitely lived up to the first one I read. Moving to this particular book, I Found Christmas Lights, I was ready to continue the creepy vibe.

The beginning starts off way slower than the other two in my opinion, BUT, it does continue the creep factor and the slower beginning explaining the backstory to the MC was necessary to understand what goes on through the book.

This story shows how much grief affects families, especially when each member in the family processes and displays the grief differently. And the differences in those processes can ultimately affect other members deeper than the initial grief. I think this was a creepy way to tell that story but it wouldn't be a Ben Farthing book if it wasn't creepy lol

From as young as I can remember, I have ALWAYS hated ....LOATHED... Christmas! As an adult who now also see's how the holiday had quickly and dramatically become about corporate greed and materialism, I despise it even more. The ONLY part I have EVER liked about that time of year, has been the way the cities put up lights. My city where I live uses blues and purples only and to me it is very calming and beautiful. I think they should be up year round lol. After reading this book though, I may be rethinking that sentiment as well as the string of lights hung up around my bed lol
I for sure will not be looking forward to hearing any carolers.

Im very sad this is the last book I needed to read in this series. Ben....please give me more I Found Horror books .... I NEED them!! K thanks lol

Meh. Cute idea, but the execution just fell flat for me. Honestly, as a fan of strange and bizarre stories, I’m not sure why this isn’t being marketed as a YA novel, because that’s where it feels it sits — and where it might’ve actually worked better.

I read this in one sitting, hoping for a fun, light Christmas horror romp to close out the holiday. Instead, I got a story weighed down by subpar writing: surface‑level, repetitive, and often so juvenile it pulled me right out of the moment. The descriptions were muddy enough that I sometimes had to stop and reread, still unsure what Farthing was trying to show me.

At its core, the book follows Douglas, a young boy grieving the loss of his sister, who died the previous Christmas Eve. His parents’ holiday spirit has died with her, and he’s desperate to revive it. While he and his friends are decorating a half‑built house in the newer section of his neighborhood, he spots strange not‑red, not‑purple lights glowing from a storm drain. Thinking he’s found the perfect addition to his display, he reaches in and pulls out something far more sinister. Something dark. Something hungry. Something looking for an empty vessel… and Douglas’s neighborhood is full of possibilities.

In the end, it’s a story with a solid premise that never quite grows into the horror it promises... a spark of an idea buried under writing that is trying too hard to sound young, and feels too thin and too repetitive to truly scare. A festive fright‑lite that could’ve shined, but instead flickers out long before the final page.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A fun addition to Ben Farthings “I found “ series.

Douglas is willing to do anything to get his parents back in the Christmas spirit after a tragedy last season. While out with his friends on Christmas Eve he notices a string of Christmas lights blinking and slithering in the sewer. Fascinated and mesmerized, Douglas takes the lights out of the sewer with the plan to use them in decorating. Unfortunately, Douglas sets off a series of Christmas nightmares. The lights spread and grow like vines, ensnaring other decorations and making them come to life. Douglas has to find a way to harness the lights and set things right again before Christmas is ruined forever.

I enjoy Ben Farthings horror novellas. They are the perfect amount of creepy and supernatural. He likes to take inanimate objects and have them take on a life of their own. There’s not many horror Christmas novels out there (strange right?). So this was fun to read around the holidays. The only complaint is it wrapped up a bit too nicely for me (pun intended) I wanted a bit more of open ended ending that leaves room for a potential sequel or gives the reader a chance to wonder is the nightmare REALLY over. But Ben Farthing is officially an auto buy author for me 👍🏻

I literally read this book in one sitting! It was only 125 pages, but I could not put it down! Not necessarily my typical read, and wasn’t sure if it was meant to be a young adult book, but either way I loved it! Eleven year old Douglas lost his younger sister on Christmas Eve a year ago. His family is still grieving and don’t want to celebrate the holidays this year. But he still loves Christmas and wants to bring his family back to the happy times. He decides to decorate a new build house in the neighborhood with lights and show his parents how much he still loves and needs Christmas.

While decorating he notices lights coming from a sewer drain that shouldn’t be there. He pulls on the strands to finish decorating the house he’s working on, but what he doesn’t know is that these lights are dangerous and coming after empty spaces….mainly the empty space left in his heart after his sister died.

A completely weird and deranged story, but action packed, and honestly has a great message! Definitely a great short, Christmas read that will keep you engaged!

This is the third book in the I Found Horror trilogy. It's about a little boy who lost his sister a year ago on Christmas. It's changes him and his parents and nothing feels the same. Then one night he finds Christmas lights slithering out of a storm drain in his town slowly engulfing everything, with carolers waltzing about that are anything but spreading cheer. But where are the lights coming from, and what happens if it engulfs the entire town?

I enjoyed this novella for what it was tackling, with themes of loss and grief and navigating life after the death of a loved one. Especially with how the author tied it into the horror itself, which was really well done. This reads like a younger YA horror, and I think this novella, and the trilogy, are good intro horror, as this never gets overly violent or graphic.

I think my biggest issue with this book is the author's style of writing, which is not bad but is not for me. I also think this suffers from the same repetition the other two novellas had as well. And lastly, the character realizes something inside themselves internally so early in the narrative that when we have the reveal at the end, what could have been so thematically impactful falls flat cause it's something we as the reader, and our MMC, already knew.

While not a bad read, it is not my favorite--but the title and cover and premise are captivating. Interested to see what else he adds to this series. Recommended for anyone looking to get into horror that is fun with a decent creep factor.

No Carolers next Christmas!!

Douglas loves Christmas, the whole Christmas season. His parents do not and there's a very good reason. Last Christmas Eve, his sister snuck down the rafters. She ended up lost, and went to the great hereafter. Now Douglas has found lights twinkling in the gutter. Will they help him bring back Christmas for his dear Dad and Mother?

Mysterious light vines, mouthless singing Victorian carolers, reindeer on steroids, and stop motion creations. Who says Halloween holds the market on all things spooky? This book definitely harkens back to Yule traditions of fear and dread being central to the holiday season.

If you have read any other horror books, you know that nothing good every comes out of the gutter. Especially when children are involved. If you are a fan of Ben's other found horror books, you will surely like this one as well. I know I did.
