Impact Parenting: Principles for Cultivating a Healthy Home shares valuable information about the stages of parenting and teaches you how to parent differently depending on the age of your child.
I'm not a "new" mom anymore, but parenting is an evolving skill. It takes trial and error to find the techniques that work for your family at the stage you find yourself in.
Something I didn't like was I didn't realize this was a Christian parenting book, and for the most part it is not. The majority of the book shares research-driven parenting tips and discussion. But at times almost randomly there's a quote from the bible, or a mention of raising children in a particular diety's image, and to be honest it breaks the immersion. It's not my cup of tea.
But back to the positives. This book is separated into chapters based on stages of parenting. Each section has questions for self reflection as well as situational examples you can use for discussion or journaling.
One important FACT you learn is "FACT" for addressing emotional reactions. F = Feelings, A = Actions, C = Correct (or not), T = Truth. It helps us as parents slow down when we are triggered by our children's behavior, and assess why we feel this way, and if our reactions are appropriate.
The book mostly focuses on the parenting journey of stages. These stages are:
Nurturing stage (Birth to age 1) Boundaries stage (1 to 5) Teaching stage (5 t0 11) - I am firmly in this stage right now. Coaching stage (12 to 17) Mentoring stage (18 to 25) Friendship stage (adulthood)
Each of these stages uses different parenting techniques and encounters different situations. The good thing about this book is you can just focus on the stage you are in at the moment, as reading about all the stages at once may be overwhelming.
The book ends with teaching you how to reset when you haven't been following a parenting technique, including steps to take and how to start the conversation.
Overall, this book will give you tools for your parenting toolbelt to help make each stage easier to manage.
Thank you CK Publicity for my copy of this invaluable resource!
The first parenting book I've read. I knew going in and quickly approaching year 3 I didn't/don't have it all figured out. This book helped put several things into perspective for me, as well as give me tools to navigate what our future will hold. I feel much more prepared and this is definitely a book I wish I had when I was pregnant, again to have tools ready and a resource to turn to. I've got ideas and plans I'm putting into action with my toddler and I'm already noticing a difference in his behavior and my own after implementing some of these changes. I love how this book also has places to make notes and questions you can answer right there on the page. While I didn't write in it (yet), stopping to address the questions and analyze the snapshots helped put these principles into practice. I'm incredibly thankful for this parenting resource!
Impact Parenting from Rachel Gunn would have to be up there amongst the top ten books on Parenting I have read over a very long period of time. Written in easy to understand language, Gunn uses her own journey as a parent to set out in five stages, a roadmap towards guiding your children in the right direction from birth to eventually becoming independent, well balanced adults. The Introduction tells the reason why this book came to be written, as she felt ashamed of what she considered her shortcomings as a parent. She pondered what was needed to make her children feel ‘well-received’ and came up with a list of small, but important points in areas in which she felt she could improve. Each section is filled with real life, positive information for setting healthy principles over a vast range of everyday situations and issues every parent has to confront at one time or another. Based on not only on her own journey with her growing family, the series of principles are also based in extensive reteach. As she points out there is no ‘one size fits all ‘with parenting, it is a moving platform that develops as the child or children develop, needing guidance and boundaries set and often reset, as they grow older. At the end of each chapter there is a Self-Reflection area, a Think and Discuss section as well as a Final Thought summary, which helps to reinforce the various topics discussed. Snap-Shots are used to illustrate points, rule setting and invites reflection, which not only encourages the parental pathway being taken, but also points out the sound reasoning used to set the boundaries or rules. Not overly long, Impact Parenting is a book which is highly recommended, not just for the information presented in this beautifully structured book, but for the sound, practical principles and advice set out in a very clear, sensible manner. Gunn also advocates the information in the book as excellent for discussion in Mothers’ or friendship groups. Impact Parenting would make the perfect gift for anyone beginning their journey into parenthood.
Impact Parenting was such an eye opener. It goes over so many things we may need to hear. Not everyone is perfect and not everyone might be going through the same thing as a parent but we all do have that struggle in the back of our mind with some aspects of life.
Here, it’s not sugar coated. You will get it how it is and how sometimes it can be difficult for a parent when it comes to our children. Like we aren’t perfect, if anything we are the most imperfect parents and it’s okay. We are just being human trying to raise our little ones, even those who are no longer children. Guidance is what you can find here.
Rachel does a good job on explaining everything and highly recommend for those who would like to know more. I loved the activities it gives you every so often throughout the book. Almost like a reflection.
I really enjoyed this book, specifically how "real" the author is, the humor and the practical advice. I love how it's broken down by age range so parents can read exactly what they need for that stage. I specifically needed to learn what to expect with my rising teenager and Rachel gave me very valuable insight how to adjust my parenting to this new stage!
