He's arrogant. A certified pain in the butt. Maybe just crazy enough to survive.
Jack Atlas, self-proclaimed 'World's Best Assassin', had a simple retire in style and marry the girl of his dreams. Then he gets placed in The Tower—a divine deathtrap where gods pit their creations against each other for the ultimate eternal paradise for you and your friends. The catch? If you lose, well, let's just say your chances of finding a decent bar in oblivion are slim.
Jack, who’s never met a hornet’s nest he didn’t want to kick, soon finds himself on the wrong side of The Black Centipede, a notorious assassin cult with a charming recruitment join or they’ll murder everyone he loves.
Instead of sipping Mai Tai’s on some beach he can’t pronounce; it’s slurping down health potions because he got stabbed by a goblin with a particular fondness for stabbing him in the rear. Heroic quests? Conquer The Tower, appease his assassin overlords, reunite with his dream girl? Nope. Jack instead gets sent to 'dungeon timeout' for bad behavior. That's fine by him.
If anyone’s crazy enough to not just survive, but win against The Tower, it’s Jack.
Listening to audible. Narrator is great, could be partly his fault for doing too good of a job exemplifying the main character I HATE THIS GUY. He sounds/acts like an 80’s action star with adhd & a coke problem that got dropped into an Isekai. He has an arrogance that should get him killed but they don’t. They have proven over & over again how weak he is to them yet he acts better than all. He has a fiancé which is why he was quitting his ways & gets mad when her name is mentioned yet has no problem thinking he had a 1 night stand & hoping to hook up with the humanoid chick. Imagine the most annoying guy you know, who always makes a comment or has a story to anything said. Then imagine giving him an entire book to do that. I paid for the Audible so I will eventually finish but so far, I would rather drive mu truck off a bridge to protect humanity.
So, the main character is just a deadpool clone. This makes it very predictable and obvious. And with a level one start, he isn't quirky. He is idiotic. Deadpool works because of his competency. The plot armor is very thick as well.
The sarcasm and humor hit my funny bone. Maybe that is why I like books like Primal Hunter and this book. Another plus is, it's not a coming of age story.
I really did! There was entirely too much witty banter. I get that he’s an asshole and that’s his whole life maybe we’ll see a change in the coming books, and this code he follows doesn’t make sense at all, so you only kill the “bad guy” but the thing is what makes them “bad guys”? Because he had a feeling or didn’t like how they acted? If that’s the case he’s the seem bad guy he’s going around killing. If you’re making a book about assassins we understand that the MC is going to be killing ppl, no need to say he only kills “bad guy” to justify him killing anyone.
OK, so if you like those superhero movies where they spend half the time spitting rapid fire wisecracks, and the other half stoically choking back tears as they bond over their tragic backstories, then this is for you. Can’t stand those movies unfortunately.
Couldn’t handle it. The author tried so hard to be witty and sarcastic that it killed and detracted from the story. The MC literally can’t have a single conversation with anyone without being dumb.
What a great beginning to a awesome new litRPG series. The system takes effect over earth just as Jack the titular character is about to finish his last job, his final assassination. When he along everyone else on earth was transported to the Tower. Jack had invisoned going straight and retiring with the money he'd saved and living the good life with his girlfriend Sarah. But all that changed when the system came giving Sarah a front row view of Jack's final kill and she learned what Jack truly was. Jack was quickly whisked away from the safe zone and sent to a cursed dungeon for punishment. And Ohhhh gods I need the Next Book, I might even go crazy wondering what's gonna happen next 🤔!!! So yeah grab the book to find out what happens to Jack... Jonathan McClain is a great narrator. So get the audiobook because oh boy does Jonathan McClain have an action-driven story to tell you!!!
Here's a couple of quotes that amused me:
"He had changed hairstyles, now sporting dreadlocks, which he tied back into a tail, as his former afro had proved too hard to maintain when you had to wash monster out of your hair after every battle."
"His speed was beginning to write checks that his Endurance was having trouble cashing."
(audio) - Ok palate cleanser, nothing special. Dropped after B2 as it had semi-resolution. If you like Mission Impossible movies*(since MC mentions Tom Cruise see IMO comparisons below)*, this one might be for you.
Bad: -too much pew-pew. 20+ minute fights where there was little impact on overall story from whoever wins. Like in MI, whenever MC lost made me think it was just time filler to show bad-assery, not a true setback for the MC. -MC is just OP. Not in earned or lucked into abilities just somehow plot armor & determination makes him able to shrug off whatever kills the peons around him. Like in MI, MC just wins whatever challenge without even training... just charm & supposed specialness. -Jokes: Reddit post said this would be similar to Dungeon Crawler Carl... NO! The humor is just lame attempt to make the MC likeable. Like temu deadpool.
What kept me going: -'Bad guy' (Gideon) was unconventional put in that role. Wanted to see how that will play out. -similar to above, but the MC's morally gray outward appearance vs Gideon's morally-good outward appearance might have made this a unique dynamic, but by end of B2 this disappeared IMO. -Side characters. Sam(naivete>growth) & Hanna(loyalty) were people i was interested in knowing how they fare.
**** I received an ARC from Mountaindale Press ****
Story: I love Jack as a character, he gives off Deadpool without superpowers and 4th wall break vibes. He is ruthless and still has a sense of self and a compassion for his friends. He is also a misanthropic drunk a la Hugh Laurie's "House".
The side characters all seem to have some "meat" to their backstory and there is more to dig into there. Definitely creates conflict and comradery.
The world is very, at least from what we see, "dark Sword Art Online" tower climbing isekai. We only see the first level of a many leveled dungeon, so it is hard to understand the world building that much.
Also, I have been walking around my house saying "centipedey centipedey centipedey" to my kids all weekend.
Performance: John McClain seems like the perfect name for the narrator of this book. He gives the main character all of the smarmy confidence you would expect from an assassin. No notes.
3.3 stars. The premise was interesting, but the plot and world felt underdeveloped. While the MC was amusing at times, he’s mostly unlikeable—constantly self-sabotaging and dragging his allies down with him. He regularly chooses short-term pleasure over long-term gains. There are brief flashes of competence and insight, but without meaningful growth, they weren’t enough to keep me invested. From what I’ve gathered, he doesn’t mature much as the series goes on, so I won’t be continuing.
That said, I appreciated the humour and how bad decisions often had consequences—even if the lessons rarely stuck.
If Deadpool were a LitRPG instead of a comic book.
Okay, maybe not full movie Deadpool levels, but pretty messed up for the hero of a LitRPG story. Jack (great name!) is an assassin on earth and that’s what he becomes in this new world - The Tower. He’s no mere hitman. Lazy, drunk(?), and an effective killing machine. And loaded with one liners to attempt to stave off feelings and disarm opponents.
Like a book version of the show archer, but not good.
MC is constantly an idiot and proud of it. It's like a book form of the show archer, but it's missing the rest of the cast that made the show good. Instead, you're just stuck with one guy being an annoying asshole surrounded by folks playing it straight.
It makes for an annoying read, and I just started skipping pages to avoid all the cringe dialogand idiocy.
It has a few comedic moment, but yeah it's, "we have an at Deadpool at home", except he is, incompetent, an alcoholic, quite annoying at times, and the sidekicks are super genetics, hard side babe/best friend, and a wanna be child wonder with lack of mental acuity, but worst part being that it's so close to be an actual good book.
Omg 😲 jack is a dummy and the class clown 🤡 like the idiot you'd love to kick in the balls so you walk away screaming 😱 inside your head why???? Did god forget to give this fool common sense when it was being passed out.. I think it's supposed to be funny sometimes it is but mostly it's annoying 😑.
Alcoholic, Sarcastic main character with a bland class/system. Tries too hard to be funny, so it's the kind of comedy where it's full of one-liners or quirky dialogue instead of humorous situations or setups/punchlines - if that's your bag, you will like this.
Also, with 20 floors in this series, not doing at least a floor per book is too slow for me.
This was an insane book. Kind of a comedy / action / first-person-player-game-adrenaline-fuelled-adventure in a book. Not my usual style but the number of insane situations and comedic quips from Jack just made it work. Very good.
“He thought two thoughts - firstly that this will probably, definitely kill him, and secondly that if it did actually work - it would be fucking awesome.”
Tower of Jack is a lot of fun. The author nailed it. A tower climbing story with a gonzo MC. A couple of interesting party members and its a roving party and disaster looking for new trouble to engage in. Mountain Dale picked a winner this time.
Loved this book. Jack is a great character in a well built world. Tons of laughs where there probably should not be any. Not sure how things will play out moving into the next book but I am eagerly waiting to find out!
I actually liked this book quite a bit. The problem is that the MC is kind of hard to root for. He is just too silly at times. That's just a personal, mostly minor quibble, though.
A fast paced fun romp with just a touch of litrpg, which is how I prefer it. The characters are well thought out and interesting. And the story grabs you by the face pretty much from the jump and drags you along for the rollercoaster ride. Loved it.
To much contrived bumble fuckery to over the top with everything working out anyway. Excessive puppet syndrome with the author blatantly sock-puppeteering the MC and story as a whole.
Do you like Archer? Do you like tutorial Isekai stories? Then this is the book for you. Fun characters, fun world building, and an interesting ability hook.
