An incredibly engaging read. The author seems to really know his setting, you feel 17. century Norway come to life. At the same time you are given a thorough, in-depth view of the thoughts and feelings of the main charcter, and she isn't what you would typically call a good guy. But a strong, multifaceted, believeable female main charcter.
The book reads pretty fast, even though it presumes an intelligent reader. There are plenty of action as well, and here the author manages to pull off a feat that allways sells me on a book - The action is enthralling and believeable at the same time as the story is intelligent and funny. That is what made Neal Stephenson one of my favorite authors, and it makes me really look forward to Matthijs Holter's next book, which I hear will be in the same setting as The Devil's Cub.
