A stunning play written in 1969 about basic training in ~1966 in prep for Vietnam deployment. Clearly a piece that’s influenced numerous other writers and directors both on stage and also on the silver screen. Hummel is a man utterly lost at sea in a world so senseless it makes you want to scream. A condition that has changed not a jot. Hence I think that a play this specific has elements of universality when it comes to power dynamics, politics, war, and identity.
Really glad I read this one. One day I’ll get to Streamers by the same playwright. D
