Madeleine Ricci has spent the past twelve years in her bedroom, allowing the world to believe that she died in an 'accident' with her dad. It was for the greater good, it ensured that her remaining family was protected from her dad's enemies. She lived the same day over and over again until her stepsister came up with a reckless, but exciting plan. Little did Madeleine know, that this plan would unravel over a decade of lies, and derail her family's schemes.
*Broken Vows is a steamy, Cinderella inspired contemporary romance (not fantasy or retelling) and the first book of the Vows Series.
I've read a lot of Cinderella retelling. This one is one of my absolute favorites!! Holy cow! From start to finish, I was completely obsessed. I didn't want to put it down and go so irritated if I had to do real life, like eat 🤣 I love love love Madeline and felt so bad for everything she was put through. I love her kindness towards her family even if one of them didn't deserve it! Liliana was truly amazing throughout the story. She wanted what was best for Madelina and did everything possible so she could get her happy ending. The plans and lengths she went to were insane! I'm so glad Madeline had her. Alessio is great for Madeline, and they belong together. I love the ending and really hope to get Liliana and Julia's story.
Oh my! This was an amazing Cinder inspired book with a hint of mafia vibes! It was so unexpected and it had so many twists and turns! I loved the chemical of the main characters as well as the family relationships. I truly adored evry single character in their own way! The plot was moving in a nice phase which gave time to enjoy the story without it being too slow! The ending though... cant wait for book 2! I would love to say so much more but i fear I Would leave spoilers behind so i will leave it to this for now!
Thank you to the author for this ARC copy in exchange of an honest review.
ARC rating: 3 stars BUT! Only because it’s not my cup of tea. I would still recommend the book to someone who is into spicy books 🥰
For the first half of the book, i was truuuuly into the story. A Maphia Cinderella retelling? Count. Me. In. Which is mainly why I’m giving it 3 stars even though this book wasn’t for me.
I truly loved the relationship between Lilianna and Madeleine (probably even more than the love story tbh) I really wanted to unravel the story behind why Madeleine had to fake her own death for 12 years and definitely was waiting for THE moment where Alessio would finally recognize her (which imo happened too soon)
Unfortunately, I didn’t know how much spice there would be in the book (a good 3 🌶 easy) and… it kinda spoiled it for me. I thought the story was a wonderful retelling of Cinderella, but maphia. I definitely had other expectations since like I’ve mentioned, I didn’t know what I was getting into. All my favorite scenes weren’t between the FMC and MMC.
If the spicy scenes didn’t happen (or maybe one?) and if we focused more on a deep connection between Alessio and Madeleine rather than a physical one, this would have 100% been my cup of tea. 12 years without seeing her and all he wants is to f- her? Call me old fashioned but I like my story a bit more… on the cute side.
Is it a bad book? Not at all. The writing is nice and so is the story. I still finished it in one sitting. But I must admit that I went through the spicy scenes REALLY fast. I would still recommend this book to my smut reading friends.
This book was amazing! I have never actually read a cinderella inspired book before but wow did this one set the bar high! It also got me out of a reading slump that i have been in for months and I am so so happy about it!
I adored this book and it's characters and will definitely be re reading!
I absolutely adored all of the characters, from the mains to the side characters! Each were so different but so well developed and unforgettable! I'm definitely hoping for more books focused on some of the others!
Where to even start with Madeleine. I love everything about her, from her kindness, to her soft spot for certain people to her love for the small things most people take for granted.
And Alessio, wow. From the first page in his point of view he captured my attention but watching as his character changed and developed throughout the book was amazing!
I really loved this book and especially the way it deviated from a typical cinderella story but still stayed true to the trope at the same time! The only thing I disliked was that it ended!
My favourite parts unfortunately both feature spoilers so i cannot write about them, but wow are they amazing!
I'd recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a unique cinderella inspired book with a lovable fmc, an mmc that would do anything for her and a book that leaves you needing more of it's characters!
I got this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review:
I love Cinderella inspired retellings, and the story and the concept were really good! I just had some trouble vibing with the writing style, but once I ignored that and focused on the story, I really enjoyed it. Also, the second half of the book was more than half of smut, and not really what I was expecting after reading the blurb and trope map ^^’.
Fav quote out of context: The thing that I want? No amount of money would ever be able to replicate it: a time machine. To be able to have Madeleine with me right now.
Tropes include: - Possessive/Bully MMC - Innocent FMC - Mafia Romance - Cinderella Retelling - It’s always been you - Touch her and Die
“Broken Vows” was an enjoyable read. The mafia Cinderella-inspired story was appealing. I needed a bit of time to connect with the characters initially. However, once the story got going, I was into it. Author Mai Rivers’ writing style is quite descriptive, often helping to set the world she has built, though at times a bit verbose.
Readers follow Madeline as she goes from living in seclusion to finding out why she is and what is going on in the outside world. That also means meeting Alessio, which leads to a relationship with him.
There are steamy scenes as Alessio falls for Madeline. Those scenes are quite detailed and done well. Overall, I liked the story.
This was a really fun cinderella retelling, complete with mafia ties, morally grey mmc, and “he falls harder”. I loved how much dance was a part of the fmc’s personality, and the lengths the mmc would go through for her. The ending left me excited for book 2!
I just loved this book, a perfect Cinderella inspired story in my opinion. The writing was so engaging, and made me very invested in the story, I was going through all the emotions and feels.
I know this book just came out, but I already can't wait for the second one!
I appreciate the ARC from the author! The rendition of Cinderella with its ethically dubious MMOC, mafia connections, and "he falls harder" was a lot of fun. I adored the fmc's inherent love of dance and the extent the mmc would go to please her. I'm eager to read book 2!
Mai has made me a fan of her writing. I received the arc of this book and I am so happy I did. I cannot wait to see how the other books in this series are written - this one had me hooked from the very start.
Madeleine is finally getting a taste of freedom after being hidden away for the past twelve years. Alessio still hasn't forgotten Madeleine, that's why when he meets someone similar to her, he's instantly attracted.
I enjoyed every bit of it—EVERYTHING it was a page turner for me. I’m not sure exactly what category I fall into since I’m just starting out with this type of books or genre. (this is only my second book) But wow, I was completely absorbed in the story from beginning to end, so deep in it I had to read it in one sitting and then again.
