The Earl and the Vixen

Rate this book
Once lovers, now sworn enemies, fate throws them together at a scandalous house party—and sparks fly.

She’s scorned, defiant, and ready to rewrite her future.
Lady Eliza Nelson fell hopelessly in love with the charming boy next door, only to be left heartbroken and ruined for any other man. Betrayed and bitter, she refuses to bow to society’s rules, vowing instead to live life on her own terms—even if that means taking a lover during her stay at Ockham’s house party.

He’s guarded, haunted, and unwilling to forget the past.
Earl Nicholas Craven gave his heart to one woman, only to believe she had chosen another man. Broken and disillusioned, he retreated from society, determined to forget her. But he comes face-to-face with the woman who shattered his heart—and the fire between them burns as fiercely as ever.

Love, hate, and passion collide.
As the two navigate their explosive reunion, their past threatens to ignite in ways neither can control. Secrets, deception, and undeniable desire bind them together while they try to tear each other apart. Can they overcome past pain to find an intense love—or will bitterness destroy them both?

⭐⭐⭐
3 stars.

➕ What I liked :

Some parts of the story were a little interesting.

Kind of a mix of Enemies to Lovers and Friends to lovers romance.

Second chance romance.

None of the main characters had other lovers during separation.

Interesting side character.

House Party.

➖ What I disliked:

Too modern/anachronistic.

Too much miscommunication and misunderstanding‎.

Formulaic and predictable in too many parts in the story/plot.

Repetitive.

The heroine was under 25 (21) but acted like a teenager…. And both main characters both in the past (when heroine was 18 and hero 22) and 3 years later acted like they were much younger than they were.

Both main characters needed more depth and needed to be more fleshed out even for a novella.

Way too little buildup from when the main characters were just friends/acquaintances/neighbors to when they became lovers.

The romantic build up and chemistry was too rushed and unconvincing even for a novella.

None of the main characters actually had other lovers during their separation which is a good thing …. but it was not for lack of trying especially from the heroes side of things.

Issues and problems were fixed too quickly and too easily even for a novella.

No real comeuppance for the heroines father for what he did.

A little too much focus on the sexual part of the relationship and not enough focus on them falling in love.
(The story/book is not Erotica or marked as Erotica so it would have been good with more focus on the romantic build up and chemistry and the main characters actually getting to know each other better and falling in love.)

The character description/visual appearance of the heroine is a tiny bit on the vague side… other than the heroine being beautiful and some hints at hair and eye color there is very sparse info in what she looks like.

Formulaic in the character description/visual appearance/character choice of the hero.
(Tall, muscular, handsome.)

Even for being a young adult woman (18 years old in the beginning of the book)the heroine is a little too naive and ignorant/willfully ignorant about her own body and pleasure and sex… even for the time period the book/story is in.

Believability/plausibility issues‎.
(The reason for the bad blood and feud between the fathers of the main characters was ridiculous and OTT.
Even if such disputes happened/happens in real life (disputes over land etc.) the way the main characters fathers behaved is way too OTT.
How naive and gullible and also slow on the uptake both the main characters were that it was their fathers that sabotaged their relationship… they knew how much their fathers hated each other and that they did not want the main characters to spend time together (they had secret rendezvous for many reasons and that was one of them… that they did not want their fathers to find out. )

REVIEW

Rating: 2/5
POV: 3rd; dual
Tropes: Lovers to enemies to lovers; neighbors to lovers; second chance; celibate MCs;
Heat level: 5.5/5
Kinks: Butt Stuff

Likes:
* how short the story was

Dislikes:
* another novella with no plot to be found

Conclusion:
Unlike my last read this is an Indie HR erotica that just completely lacked a plot. The writing was very elementary except for when the MCs were having sex… which was a lot for such a short book. Hence why I’m labeling this an erotica.
I stuck it out because of how quick of a read it was and I’m eager to finish my 2025 bingo!

I would not recommend this unless you’re looking for just a straight HR smut book and don’t care about there being a plot. I would absolutely recommend it then - because I will say the author is not bad at writing sex!

What if Romeo & Juliet got a second chance?

~ Eliza & Nick ~
They grew up on neighbouring estates, but their fathers were rivals and that made their budding romance impossible, or did it? Forbidden fruit always tastes sweeter, and these two fell hard and fast for each other. They shared a summer of passionate bliss, were determined to defy their fathers and marry - elope if they must - but then ... nothing!
They disappeared on each other only to meet again three years later at a house party.
She believes he played her. He believes she married another.
Their hearts still cry out for the other, but can they sit down and talk things through? Or will there be blood?

Fast-paced, very steamy and great fun, this novella was a little short in the best way possible. I would have loved to witness these two battle it out for a bit longer. They’re both so very talented at taunting and titillating the other - a riveting hate-to-love-you-still situation - and the heat of the moment always leads to... more wickedly delicious heat!
I liked both MCs, their passion, their anger and their loyalty - and their sidekicks definitely made me curious about the next books in this series.
A very quick and scrumptious read and I’m very much looking forward to more by this author!

What a fun start to what is sure to be an addictive series.
Historical romance is not my normal genre and when Diane started this story with the couple already agreeing to marriage and consummating their love in a pages-long, extremely spicy manner, I couldn’t see where things would go from there. But go they did, dear reader. From a misfortunate parting of ways to the most tea-filled regency house party in not-so-recent history. Oh boy… I guess now I know why those old manors had so many extra studies and libraries and hidden rooms. This was a short and fast read with LOTS of well-written spice. I can’t wait for whatever else is next. I am going to explore the entire timeline of this house party. You are invited too.

This novella is a spicy blend of Enemies to Lovers and Second Chance Romance. I don’t usually read this genre, so I'm not sure I'm the best person to leave a review, but I'll do my best :)

Eliza is a complex character who's been deeply hurt by Nick. She struggles between holding her ground and allowing herself to trust again. Nick, on the other hand, is clearly still wrapped up in his feelings for her. They work to unravel the mystery of what went wrong years before. Their reunion is full of tension and passion, and ultimately some sweet moments.

For those who like their romance on the steamy side, this novella delivers with more than a few fiery scenes. Despite being outside my usual reading comfort zone, I found it an enjoyable read. If you're a fan of romantic tension, complex pasts, and a guaranteed happily-ever-after, this book might be just what you’re looking for!

If I could give this book a 10+ star I would, its just that good!

Nick and Eliza both hate each other but despite the fact they hate each other, they can't deny their passion or their love for each other especially when they are stuck together at a house party.

The sparks are instant between these two characters.

I can't say enough about this story..

I can't wait to read the rest of this series..

I received this as advanced reader's copy from the author in exchange for an honest voluntary review and this is purely based upon my own personal opinion and that of no one else.

Spice: 3

Tropes:

The Earl and the Vixen is a spicy novella! Lovers Eliza and Nick want to run off to be married but their father's hate one another. After being told that neither loved the other, the two are set off on breakbreak. Three years later, they come face to face at a house party. Will the sins of their fathers set them free or will secrets never come to light?

I thought Eliza and Nick's story was heart pulling. Eliza if fiesty- letting no man break her heart again. Nick gives off cinnamon roll for me. You want to scream at them the truth of why they aren't together but the tension is good too. Super cute!

This was such a great fast paced Bridgerton-style romance with alllll the steam... And I was totally here for it! 😍

Enemies To Lovers, Second Chance Romance. Yes! 😍

I loved this book so much! It gave me all the feels (literally!) I loved how feisty and strong Eliza is, and I adored Nick!

I do wish their feud went on a little longer - only coz I love a good bit of chaos and I reckon they could've had fun ruining eachother 🤣 - but the ending was the best HEA I've read 😍

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Thank you so much for the chance to read this for you Christina 🤍 What a pleasure!

This a good quick read that makes you love both characters by the end and angry for them throughout the entirety of the book. Eliza and Nick have multiple steamy rendezvous through the book. I’m not well versed in the Regency Era but engaged in the all the different elements that it involved. I absolutely loved the phrase “bacon-brained” and laughed every time I read it. Great start to the new series! Can’t wait to read about more of the characters at the house party.

This is a new author for me. I saw her book when I was downloading another new author and also ran across her on a FB takeover in one of my steamy book groups. She says she is spicy. We'll see. :)

I enjoyed this book. It was really short but I liked the storyline and the characters. I would love to read more of her books.

Don’t let the page count fool you, because this spicy little novella sure packs a punch! It’s a quick read that somehow manages to tell a substantial love story.

It’s like a Victorian grown up Romeo & Juliet, only hornier…and they don’t die lol.

A super quick yet engaging read, perfect as a palette cleanser between heavier reads. Highly recommend!

After reading the author's debut novel Loving The Unexpected Earl, I knew I had to read this and I am so glad that I did. It is a story that starts off so beautiful and also a bit spicy, rather scandalous for the time period, there are Romeo and Juliet vibes from the start which get you hooked, needing to see where the story takes you and how it becomes a tragedy and it does not disappoint. The twist hits you hard and you feel a number of emotions you don't know whether to feel heartbroken, suspicious, curious or just plain angry. The author manages to make you connect to the characters without you realising it very early on. You really feel for the FMC, feeling her every emotion. And then, you realise you feel for both the FMC and the MMC, even if you don't know why and once it becomes clear, you wait on baited breath to find out what happens next. The book is just the right amount of spicy and is such a thrilling novella. A must read for those that love regency novels 🤗💜

Overall Rating: 4.0 / 5.0
Spice Level: 3.0 / 5.0

This was a quick read. I read it all in about a day and I enjoyed it overall.

In The Earl and the Vixen we have Elizabeth Nelson who is in love with Nicholas, the Earl of Craven. These two have known each other since childhood and are currently in a secret/forbidden romance. Due to the long-term rivalry between their fathers, the couple find themselves in a predicament. They love each other and would like to spend the rest of their lives together, but will their father's agree to their marriage or will they do everything in their power to make Elizabeth & Nicholas' relationship a failure.

Overall, like I said above, I enjoyed this story. This is my second Christina Diane read and this one was on par with my previous read of hers. I knew going in that I would get lots of spice and a short, quick love story. There was not too much focus on who the characters were and there was no much character development per se but that, in my opinion, does not take away from the story because I was not going in expecting to find flawed, or dynamic, or fully developed, deep characters.

The plot was also quite enjoyable. We started off hot and heavy with these two. After some time together, Elizabeth agrees to allow Nicholas to deflower her and we see that after this, there is a rift in the relationship. Most of the story involves (1) who is the cause of the breakup and (2) whether or not these two are going to get back together. Though a little predictable, I found this to be a light read with tons of good spice that anyone who is in a reading slump or just needs a quick dose of regency romance would enjoy.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this book.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was honestly very conflicted when rating this book. I felt like even if I particularly didn't love it, other people would, and that I probably wasn't the right audience for it.

For starters, this is a sex driven book. And although I do enjoy a little steam, I tend to get bored when there's too much sex in a story, but I know for a fact that many people would enjoy, and even prefer, this aspect of the book. So, if you're someone who enjoys a lot of steam in your romances, this book is definitely for you!

I, on the other hand, had a hard time connecting with the characters and the plot. I never felt like I knew the characters, they felt a little generic to me, and the plot didn't always make a lot of sense to me. But I do feel the need to point out that I started reading this book unaware that is was a novella and not a full length novel. Had I realised sooner, I probably would've overlooked the lack of depth and development in it. That was my mistake for not reading the description correctly.

And lastly, I've noticed a significant rise in 'wallpaper' historical romances, and although I don't always mind and can read and enjoy them, they're not my real cuppa.
For those who are unfamiliar with the term, a wallpaper historical romance is a book set in a historical period but with language, behaviours and certain plotlines that would be considered inaccurate or implausible for said period. And although I'm by no means an expert on historical accuracy, some books do stretch the limits a little too far for me, including this one. But I'm very aware that there is a huge audience out there that would absolutely love this book. So I'm really hoping it makes its way to their hands!

Eliza and Nick's love story ignites with the thrill of young passion, drawing them together despite their families being at odds. Stolen moments, secret meetings and whispered promises led to dreams of a future together where anything was possible. However, the thrill of their romance is abruptly cut short when lies and misunderstandings tear them apart, shattering their hopes and trust in each other.

Years later, fate pulls them back together in a confrontation that is filled with tension and unresolved feelings.Their reunion becomes a battlefield of longing and regret. The more time they spend together the more the lines between anger and desire blur. With every conversation, they discover deeper truths about themselves and their love, realizing that the bond they shared is still alive and stronger than ever. Their families had built walls of resentment and miscommunication, but in each other’s eyes lay a reminder of what true love felt like.

At its core, this tale is a testament to the resilience of love. The writing is fast-paced and filled with details that make every scene feel alive, drawing you deeper into their story where love is both a weapon and a refuge. Their chemistry is sizzling hot, blending a modern vibe with the allure of a historical backdrop. I’d definitely recommend this to anyone in search of a steamy, forbidden, second-chance romance that’s well-crafted, engaging, and wraps up with a satisfying happily ever after. In a world that sought to keep them apart, Eliza and Nick dared to imagine a future together, where love conquered all, even the greatest of obstacles.

I received an early copy from the author (Thank You!) All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I guzzled this book like a cold glass of water on a hot day. Nick and Eliza burn up the pages!

The story is set at a house party in the country where Nick and Eliza meet again after being separated on the eve of their engagement two years before. Due to some bad family blood they were pulled apart though neither knows the whole story and they are left to their misinterpretations. When they meet again, they are both wounded, but also undeniably drawn to each other. During the house party, things quickly reignite between them, though their path back to the trust they once had is not as easy as their attraction.

This romance is unique in that we get a look at the couple in their younger days as innocents and then again as a bit more hardened to love. But, lemme tell you, innocent or not, the sexy time between these two was intense! I loved every interaction between them.

I am all in on the idea of this series because there is so much potential for other couples. I suspect some of the more minor characters in this story will be revealed to be having their own, concurrent love stories. Woo! Can’t wait for more!

Now I need another glass of water.

A quick hit, star-crossed lovers tale set in the Regency Era. Eliza and Nick are obsessed with each other, despite the fact that their fathers are sworn enemies. The feud between their families makes it difficult for them to officially court, but they find ways to grow more and more intimate. A type of Romeo and Juliet.

One fateful night drives them apart and they don’t meet again till three years has passed. Per usual, it’s all made more complicated by the classic miscommunication trope. The dialogue is fun with strong female characters. I’m again impressed by this author’s balance of writing characters with a feminist approach in an era when this was uncommon.

The dynamic is spicy with high emotional moments! The spice is good and appropriate to the story. Their connection is well written and I was teary eyed at some of the scenes.

I continue to enjoy reading this author and look forward to more of her books!

I was privileged to receive an ARC of this book and have been honest in my review of it. I did not receive anything in exchange for my review.

Tropes: second chance romance, house party, feuding families
Steam level: 3-4ish (one scene borders on erotica)
Dirty talk, including "f-bombs", if that offends you.

2.5 stars rounded up, although I think I'm being generous with my rating. This isn't terrible, but it's not good. I really wonder why the author just didn't set this during modern times and call it a day. The family feud involving the creek is silly anyway and the MC's act and talk like immature teens living in this century. The plot is routine and repetitive, with the MC's arguing, having sex, and the MFC running away from the MMC, refusing to talk to him. The Major Miscommunication trope is far from my favorite, and there are no surprises in the way the storyline unfolds. Even worse, the MC's have little depth. Some smart banter and humor, even involving the secondary characters at the house party, would have helped liven things up a bit.

Still, if you're in the mood for a very short, paint-by-numbers read with plenty of smut, set in historical times but with modern language and behavior, this might fit the bill for you.

This was an enjoyable read. It was on the shorter side, so I was able to read the whole story in a day. It was engaging and fun. There was angst, but not too much. For me, it was the perfect amount for the length of the book.

Eliza and Nick were great characters. They grew up next to one another and fell in love. Their parents were a problem though. Their families were feuding over a stream, so the story had a bit of Romeo and Juliet vibe. I truly enjoyed how the trope played out and how the couple couldn’t move on from one another despite believing the other gave up on them 3 years ago. There’s something that turns my heart mushy when both characters are held up on each other.

My only qualm was I felt the whole family interference thing could have had more detail towards the end. I’d like to know if the fathers acted independently or if they came together just long enough to conspire against their children.

Either way, this was a spicy and sweet story. I feel like I can already see growth on the part of the author from her last book. This was fun!

I enjoyed this enemies to lovers second chance romance read. Nick and Eliza have this chemistry between them that is undeniable and we readers can feel that tension on everu page in this short read. I’m so glad they had their HEA in the end. Also appreciated the additional epilogue and that it was four years later (love them years later) to have a look at where they’re at in life. For a novella there’s a fair bit of spice and it was pretty hot, so I’ll never complain about that.

This is my second read by Christina Diane and I certainly do enjoy how she writes, doesn’t draw out stories longer than they need to be and captivates me from that first chapter. Definetely added to a list of authors I’ll continue to read.

It looks like all the other books in this series will all be novella’s which is fine with me and I would’ve enjoyed this book too of it had been a full length novel. I’m looking forward to reading the other books in the series, especially The Marquess and the Earl.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

✨ARC Review✨

What a spicy lil historical romance novella!

Three years ago, Eliza (18) and Nick (21) were sneaking around and enjoying each other’s company v. v. much. They planned to get married, but they were biding their time trying to figure out how to make it happen since their fathers hated each other. They were prepared to book it to Gretna Green if need be; however, Eliza received a heartbreaking letter from Nick basically telling her she was a fool to think he’d marry her, etc.

Now she’s at a country house party (where ALL the shenanigans happen if you read HR) and who is there but Nick? His father has passed and now he’s an earl and still handsome and making Eliza swoon. She tries to resist since he broke her heart once before, but d’ya reckon she’ll be able to for very long? 😉

Maybe there was a good reason he broke things off in such an abominable manner? Maybe they’ll get their second chance?

Y’all. This is a fun, spicy novella if you’re into that which I absolutely am.

I was given an eARC by the author, @christinadianeauthor. All thoughts are mine alone.

4.25⭐️ Steamy Regency novella with a twist.

Fast-paced and spicy, The Earl and the Vixen is sure to titillate. Eliza and Nick’s story is one of second-chance star-crossed lovers and feuding estates, forbidden love and misunderstandings galore. And oh do these two enjoy baiting one another!

An excellent breezy palette cleanser between heavier reads. Please keep in mind that author Christina Diana gives forewarning that she's not one to stick strictly to historical accuracy so either keep an open mind and heart or pass this one by.

Not an overly complex read, where development in plot and characters could have been fleshed out a little more, I am reminded that this is indeed a short story. Thus, for what it is, I got my giggles and spice and ended on a contented note.
The addition of supporting characters alludes to who or what may be expected in novellas to come— did I mention this is book one in a series?

Happy reading

The Earl and the Vixen is a classic miscommunication trope. The story was not at all complicated and very easily resolved. Honestly, seeing as it is billed as erotica, I shouldn't expect a deeper plot, But I wanted more backstory, more tension... more than just sex. The writing was fine and there was the possibility of a good story, it just never got developed as it could have been.

The narration was OK. I sped it up to make it a little easier to listen to. While listening on my headphones, about halfway through I could hear a doorbell and did a double take when I realized it was in the audiobook and not my door. It was faint, but a tad distracting. Otherwise, I don't have any complaints about the narration.

For a short quick listen, it's not bad as long as you don't go into it expecting more and knowing it's quite spicy.

A short book of under 100 pages which could have been delightful budding or recovered romance set at a country house party but the plot is so daft that it takes away from what could have been. We are expected to believe that two young neighbours on the cusp or adulthood fall in love and have a full sexual relationship against the wishes of their fathers in pure Romeo and Juliette style.

So far so good, even though it is hardly original; however we are now to believe that they are split apart by the delivery of a rejection letter supposed to be delivered from him and a fake wedding for her that nobody knows about. I am sorry but these two are close neighbours so there is no way that he is not aware that she never married, it simply doesn't work even though the author tries to give an explanation.

Ok so this was my first historic romance. This author is also new to me. I was lucky enough to get an arc copy. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this novella. Starting this book i thought man what am I getting into? I have never read a romance book that was set in the 1800's. I did have to look up some words because I didn't know what they ment when the author was describing some things. I also feel like language was 1800's mixed with todays. The story line was how both the mmc and mfc were split apart and then were reunited years later. It had go spice and a good story line! I am looking forward to the other books in this series to get lost into another decade.

Wow I really loved this one! This novella didn’t waste anytime, sparks fly between Eliza & Nick and it’s hot 🥵 Loved the steamy, spicy scenes. I wanted to throw my kindle during the “betrayal!” Time passes, neither of them has really moved on and they are reunited at a house party. Eliza & Nick are not excited to see each other. Still hurt and angry… but they can’t deny the passion and love is still there…I love a HEA🥰

This novella brought the fiery passion, betrayal, scandal and meddling family you crave in a regency romance. Eliza and Nick’s young love was torn away before they could pledge themselves to each other, and what follows is three years of misery and resentment. Little do they know that they’ll soon be in close proximity forcing them to confront unwanted lingering feelings and jealousies, that might just be the push they need to find their HEA. I absolutely loved Eliza’s determination to go against the norm of marrying, and Nick’s possessiveness and loyalty to her made their eventual reunion that much more sweeter.
