{From Amazon} "I am Doreen Owens Malek, author of over forty books and lifelong fan of romantic fiction. I live in PA with my husband and college student daughter, a mini dachshund and a sun conyer parrot. I would like to tell you a little about myself.
I came to writing by a circuitous route, starting out as an avid reader of JANE EYRE and WUTHERING HEIGHTS and GONE WITH THE WIND and REBECCA and any other similarly themed books I could find. I first worked as a teacher and then graduated from law school when I desired a more lucrative and independent career. I had always been discouraged from pursuing a writing career by the volatile nature of the business and the relatively poor chance for success. But the realization that I needed a focus for the future encouraged me to do what I had always wanted to do. I sold my fledgling novel to the first editor who read it, and I have been writing ever since. I have written all types of books for all types of people, but my favorite literary pursuit is and always has been romance. Nothing is as rewarding as hearing from my readers, so please use my website to communicate your thoughts and criticisms, as I am always eager to learn from you.
A romance novel rarely disappoints me: in an uncertain world filled with tragedy and sadness, reading about an appealing woman finding a strong man to love her and share her life is the perfect escape. I like to read and write stories in which the main characters overcome obstacles to get together, and then stay together because their mutual devotion cannot be denied no matter what else is happening around them. They always HELP each other and reinforce the quaint but enduring notion that love conquers all - at least in the fictional universe of my imagination. So pull up a chair and take down a book- or pick up a Kindle- and join me in a world where the heroes are tough and headstrong but never boorish and the heroines are feminine and sympathetic but never helpless."
Memorable story with lovable characters that stuck with me ever since I read it as a teenager not long after it was first published. Now I read it again, the magic...
The pacing is rather plodding. You'll get to your destination, it's just going to take some time. The characters come off as TV movie of the week quality. For all I know this was made into a TV movie of the week seeing as how the book came out in the Eighties. I know this is going to sound weird but these weren't the meanest of German invaders, at least the ones in this town. I never really felt any danger for the French resistance fighters. Even the one Nazi SS officer was only a blip on the radar.
This was an exciting and interesting World War Two story covering the time the German military captured France and the Resistance began about 1940 until they were driven out in 1944. Three romances were going on. I enjoyed the portrayal of the humane side of some German soldiers even as they fulfilled their duties. Well-written.
Well paced, a romantic novel set in the tumultuous backdrop of France's invasion. The premise evolves effortlessly as characters find love with friends and foes. I felt transported to those dangerous times. Great read. Conrad Samayoa.
I absolutely LOVED this book. Taking place in occupied France during the Nazi occupation, it is the story of 6 people. Two Americans, two French, and two Germans. When the German army comes to occupy the small town of Fains in the north of France, many run, but some brave souls form a resistance. Among them is an American girl who is married to a Fremchman who was killed early in the war. She has stayed with her brother and father in-law as she has no desire to return to America and the parents who were against her marriage. Enter the German army under Captain Anton Becker, a disgraced soldier and his young aide Kurt. They bothe unknown to the other become involved with two French girls. I loved this passage by Becker who was one of the truly humane German invaders to Lysette, his love. "Should I wish my country to win and see the whoile world plunged into chaos?" he demanded. "My loyalty is to Germany, not to that lunatic house painter and his minions. They are ruining my country with a regime that will go down in history as the scandal of the civilized world. Do you know what the latest SS enterprise is? Lebensborn, Himmler's pet project, I am told. Lebensborn is a plan for the future of the Aryan race. They are kidnapping children of the "right" physical type, blonde hair and blue eyes from families in Poland and other occupied countries, sending them to group homes to be raised as proper little Nazis. It has obviously not occured to Mein Fuhrer to look into the mirrorand discover that he is not then right racial type." Becker, a truly honorable German was my favorite character, showing that not all Germans were bad. The best part was that they all had a happy ending. Thank you doreen for making this book free so I was able to read it. Highly Recommended.
I love books set in WW2 and throughly enjoyed this one. So many people depict Germans as all being Nazis and everyone else as being saints. This book showed there were humans on both sides and in fact some human beings were "evil" in the pursuit of their duty but "good" in other ways. The author explored the fact that some Germans didnt believe in what the Nazis stood for but were simply in the army defending their country. They didnt get involved in torture or commit any crimes. Would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in WW2 fiction - has romance and suspense so covers it all.
I really enjoyed this vivid novel about life during World War II. Much is made about the battles, but not all the much exists about life in the occupied sections during the war. It is a romance and so the characters are a little larger than life. I loved Harris, the American. This was a very enjoyable romantic war story and I highly recommend it. Get it if you love war stories and love stories.
This ended up being a decent book. After reading the first couple pages in a sample version and not finding it very interesting I almost didn't read it. I decided to give it another try and was pleasantly surprised. It had a few slow parts and it is a romance novel so the focus was around romance during the war (which isn't what I typicslly read) but over all it held my attention.
There were three love stories and a lot of action going on in this book. Ms Malek nailed them all. Everyone of the characters stayed true to their identity's. That, in itself, would be difficult to do as a writer, but she also made her characters so likable. Well done, Ms Malek.
