Lost King of the Pattern: The Fralsningdor Chronicles, Book II

Rate this book
"[The Weaver] only picks the broken, lad."

Fi’eren & Fran La’arreth were chosen and written into the Weaver’s Pattern long before they were born, but years of secrets and denial almost unraveled their marriage before their quest could begin. Now, after a harrowing journey to accept their callings and find the illusive Weft, they can finally train Fran's magic and prepare Fi'eren for battle against the bloodthirsty elven usurper, High King Darreth.

But old wounds are made fresh when the Weaver sends them — and their four children — to the last city in Korreth they would ever wish to go. Only to be forced to collude with estranged family and unwanted allies when they arrive. Persecution lurks around every corner, and when the pagan witch of Rurrun tracks them down, they discover they might not live to reclaim the throne and free goblinkind after all.

Join Fran and Fi'eren in the exhilarating second installment of The Fralsningdor Chronicles as they navigate parenting, politics, dark magic, dangerous foes, and blessed assurance.

If you've ever wanted a book where the Apostle Paul is an elf, King David is a goblin silversmith, and Deborah is a homeschooling mother of four with magic that doesn't work right — Lost King of the Pattern is for you!

Laura Cheever writes fantasy novels with strong Christian themes and an emphasis on romance within seasoned marriages. She lives in rural Wyoming with her husband, Andrew, and their four children, the legendary makers of mischief and shenanigans. When she’s not writing or daydreaming about new stories, she homeschools the kids, reads a mildly concerning number of fantasy novels, paints, plays board games, bakes mediocre sourdough bread, and plays old-timey hymns on the piano.

If you enjoy her books, please consider leaving reviews on Amazon or Goodreads. It helps the author so much, and it helps other readers find stories they’ll love! Thank you.

Lost King of the Pattern picks up right where Chosen of the Tapestry leaves off.

This is still the cozy love story from before, but now the action and adventure have picked up a notch or two. Battles are fought and war is brewing.

Expect your heart to be ripped out and tension left in your throat.

Also, the Weft! You need to meet the Weft! Just sayin'.

I don't want to say too much because I don't want to spoil anything.
Laura Cheever, write the next one, we needs it!! (I say in my best Gollum voice)

This story is for Christians, homeschooling moms, and people who like high fantasy, cozy romance, and adventure all rolled into one. The same Biblical narrative and God are blended wonderfully into a magical woven world that carries through this next installment. You won't want to miss this continuation.

Well done!

Lost King of the Pattern is a book I will be thinking about for the rest of my life. Laura Cheever tackles theologically rich concepts of forgiveness, salvation, mercy, and even martyrdom in this stunning sequel to Chosen of the Tapestry. The new characters introduced in this book are some of my favorite characters of the Christian Fantasy genre.

If I was to sum up this book in one word I would say "brilliant" or "genius".

With the topic of battle and war, this book is more violent than the first, but the way the violence is portrayed is extremely purposeful and significant to the story. I highly highly recommend Lost King of the Pattern.

Fran and Fi'eren arrived at the Weft's home on the mountain at the end of the last book, and now are going to train to be ready for battle. Fran needs to learn how she can actually use all her pent up wild magic, and Fi'eren needs to learn how to swing a sword instead of a hammer. Both guided by the most unconventional of teachers. The old Weft, an aging prophet of the Weaver that may or may not have lost some of his marbles down the mountain side. (Fairly he reminds me of Rafiki from the Lion King)

After they have been deemed ready they are sent out to a new place. And not just any place, a human city and home to Fran's estranged father and his new family. There is much bitterness and pain for Fran to work through and Fi'eren battles through his own struggles and nightmares of actions past.
This story focuses primarily on taking on the actual roles that they were prophesied to fulfill and learn so much more about forgiveness and that the Weaver truly is in control.

Lost King of the Pattern is the direct follow up to Chosen of the Tapestry. Literally starting the next day after the events of the first book. Though if you have trouble remembering important details from one book to the next, you don't have to worry, as the writer has made sure that there is a brief recap for each important aspect that is mentioned, be it an item, or an event, so that you won't be left floundering. This second book focuses more on Fi'eren's internal journey compared to Fran's, though they both get their moments of struggles and growth.

The story weaves in a lot of little humorous elements into the story. From a Lilo and Stitch reference to cheesy dad jokes. But for all its humor it also varies many serious notes. Introducing much more of the danger and trials that the main duo face as they venture further into their foretold roles.

Where book one focussed on repairing a breaking marriage, with tiny little peppered elements of romance and a fade to black bedroom scene between husband and wife, this story shows just how far their relationship has come. Being open and honest with each other while being mindful of not over sharing and scarring the other. But with a repaired relationship also comes a few more bedroom (or behind the stairs) moments, lots of kisses, and plenty of flirty thoughts on what they think of the other. A lot of affection is shown, and all in good taste.

This story conveys much more of the Christian message of faith and redemption compared to the previous one. It's no longer a backdrop to which the characters act, it has become an active participant in this entire tale that can't be ignored.

All in all, if you are looking for a fantasy story with strong Christian messages woven through, this is a wonderful read full of laughs and giggles and heartfelt moments.
I personally had the privilege of being part of the ARC readers, which I am incredibly grateful for

I had the pleasure of doing a beta read and an advance read of Lost King of the Pattern, and I have to give the biggest thank you to Laura Cheever and Cleavebond Publishing for giving me the opportunity to help with the development of book two, as well as to read and review it ahead of its release!

Lost King of the Pattern picks right up where Chosen of the Tapestry leaves off. Fran, Fi’eren, and their children are staying with the Weft. Our two beloved main characters are on much more even footing with their marriage, and are now focusing on their destinies that the Weaver has in store for them, starting by training Fran’s dormant magic into something functional, and honing Fi’eren’s combat skills. Once it’s time for them to continue on their journey, the Weaver sends them to the city where Fran’s estranged father lives with his new wife and their children, and with the ever-present threat of the High King’s elves, as well as new foes, Fran and Fi’eren face new challenges on their quest to reclaim the throne and restore the rightful heir as king.

No spoilers here, because I truly believe that you need to experience this for yourself, but make sure you get caught up with book one before you get a copy of LKOTP. You must read book one in order to understand book two.

I cannot put into words how blown away I was by this sequel! Cheever continues to build upon her impressive world, further expanding the parts of it that we know, while also exploring new facets of the goblin magic system we became familiar with in book one. Additionally, she approaches some really difficult theological topics in this book, and for many people, they will closely mirror experiences that we’ve had ourselves.

“How do you know you belong to him? How do you know that you’re actually his?” - Fi’eren La’arreth

I think the most impressive thing for me is seeing Cheever’s improvement upon an already solid novel. Book one was, hands down, the best indie debut I’ve ever read in my life, and not as a discredit to the author, I had no idea that it could get better. In regards to imagery, Cheever paints an even more vivid (how is it even possible?) picture of what is going on in the book. Reading about Fran’s strained relationship with her father, and experiencing her journey to reconcile with her estranged family felt extremely familiar to me, and was handled with such grace and sensitivity. And somehow, Cheever manages to create new characters who are just as lovable (and potentially even more so) than some of the characters we’ve known since book one!

Lost King of the Pattern is easily a five star read! I would definitely recommend this series if you identify yourself as a lover of romance and fantasy, a fan of second-chance romance, someone who loves deep lore, politics, and robust worldbuilding in books, or any Christian looking for a faith-filled fiction read that ultimately glorifies God!

Reasons to Read this Book!

-MCs are a married couple with kids and are falling in love all over again.
-Goblins are the good guys, and they define themselves and each other as attractive as according to their own beauty standards.
-Elves are genocidal, religious terrorists…but not all elves. (Nor is the heroic renegade character introduced in this story the only one to reject the cruelty of his people.)
-Step-mother and step-family are actually really good people.
-Restoration of family.
-A fantastic Foes to Bros bridging a painful rift across races.
-World-building and magic is richly realized, vibrant, and interesting.
- Characters flawed with familiar struggles such as bitterness and self-righteousness.
-Author’s voice is confident, witty, and written straight from the heart.

I deeply enjoyed the first book in the series, and now I can say that I loved the second even more! The intensity is building towards a truly epic finale, and I cannot wait to enjoy the complete trilogy!

Violence: From first glance at the covers, one might assume this is cozy-cottage core fantasy, but while there are plenty of cozy moments and sections, this is a very troubled world with an overarching plot of a family trying to survive and triumph against a genocidal elf king and army who wishes to wipe out an entire race and religion. So yes, the violence is at times very sad and grim as we hear of or watch innocents get persecuted and/or killed (women and children included).

Sexual: Our main married couple has overcome the communication and trust issues they were facing in Book 1, and now, they are in the happy season of falling in love all over again. This lends to quite of bit flirting, gazing, and some attempted make-outs (usually interrupted by their kids, wouldn’t you know it.) I’d call it on the heated side of wholesome? Very welcome storytelling for married couples who wish to be represented correctly, but might be a bit much for a conservative teen who hasn’t been exposed to twitter-pated couples. This is written for an adult audience, after all, but not really past the point of that one couple who we affectionately tell to “get a room.”

As seen in Book 1, the elven race is not only genocidal towards the goblins, but also have a reputation as sexual predators, and while no attempted SA is made in this book, our heroine does pick up on the vibe from some passing soldiers.

Language: A few uses of h*ll and d*mn.

Magic: A clear difference painted between dark magic and the magic gifted and empowered by the divine “Weaver.”

Book 1 was good...........BOOK 2 is AWESOME! Bibical God glorifying punches are not held back. The kiddos are cute and funny. The marriage is realistic, tough, full of tears, apologies, make up hugs, kisses haha kiddo reactions, happy memories, bite lipping, hope and so much love. This book has fun slangs and words. The adventure and action gets me yearning for the safety and keeps me interested in the family as characters and growth. The Weft is fun and hilarious. His crazy makes sense. Ohhhh!!! Annnd that chapter with a cliff hanger regarding the Weft ...ahhh .... we have to find out how!? Why!? Haha. This book is real . Yeah a fictional story but based on real love. Real marriage. Real love. And everything Good comes from God so as I read this Book I see sentences and such pointing to bibical God glorifying truth. It's a fun adventurous read. And I am only half way of reading it :) I'll let you know about the other half :)

5 stars is not enough for this book! This is more than a fantasy series, It's a tale of broken people that deserve nothing good, yet are shown mercy and grace and used for the glory of the Weaver. I don't think you need to be a Christian to enjoy this series but faith themes are heavily woven throughout so if that's not your cup of tea then I guess maybe pass on this one but it's such a beautiful story and you may be missing out on your next fav book.

Some themes:
Broken marriage to redeemed marriage
the unforgivable forgiven
war and royal/political intrigue
fulfilled prophesy/savior of the realm

cw
no/low spice (kissing only and descriptive desire/innuendo between married couple only)
fantasy cursing
descriptive violence and on page death

Fantastic! I feel like I have lived in Fralsningdor now. I definitely want to have tea with the Weft & dine Missus Perkins.

Somehow this book was even better than Chosen of the Tapestry. The action was amazing! However, their time with the Weft was probably my favorite.

No soul is too far gone for Jesus. Not. A. Single. One. I love how this story tells about a grace unimaginable & extends it to goblins, elves, dwarfs, faeries & humans. He truly does use the broken so His glory can shine through even more. I am so thankful for that - speaking as a broken woman unworthy of the love of the King. But God. I am redeemed.

Please read this lovely story. I cannot wait until the battle continues!

The incredible action-packed, cozy love story, epic sequel to Chosen of the Tapestry!

I love seeing Fran and Fi’eren on their journey as they continue to grow individually and together as a couple. ("Already Married Romance is probably my new favorite trope!)

Some wonderful new characters are introduced, and things are gearing up for an exciting book 3!!

Fantasy mixed with strong Biblical themes - yes, please!!

The theme of family restoration was also beautifully done. This whole book was amazing! Highly recommend!!

This is a Christian fantasy and has strong faith views throughout.
You must read book 1 Chosen of the Tapestry to understand book 2.
We rejoin Fran and Fi’eren as they venture with their children to the Weft to help Fran learn control over her unique magic. We watch Fran, a mother of 4 struggles to gain control of her pent up wild magic, while also trying to continue to heal her marriage with her husband. There is a lot more action in this book than we saw in book 1, and I loved that. Everything was well written and I loved the faith views woven into every aspect of the book.

💚 “ The weaver chooses us in our brokenness, Fran, but he doesn’t leave us there.” Fran and Fi’eren are hands down one of my favorite book couples. The way their relationship strengthens in this book is beautiful. Borrethyn quickly became my favorite character in book 2! The friendship that he and Fi’eren develop is a great addition to the series! I hope to see much more of Bore in book 3!

Wow, wow, wow! This book picks right up where Chosen of the Tapestry left off. We read about Fran and Fi'eren's adventures as they come into their calling as the Lost King and the Chosen One! This book is a beautiful balance of swoony moments between a husband and a wife along with action packed scenes! LKOTP is hard to put down. Laura introduces many new characters so smoothly into this book, and you will love all the good ones! LIKE the Weft! Ha, he is the best! And sweet Missus Perkins! IYKYK

Some things I love about this book - a praying wife, a not evil step mother, loving flawed people, ordinary people being used for the extraordinary, an enemies to friends bromance, colorful thread like magic, an old sweet old man that talks to his food, and husband that tells his wife that she bows to NO man!

Be warned - YOU WILL BE HOOKED BY THE PROLOGUE!
