About the author

Thachom Poyil Rajeevan (born 1959, Paleri in Kozhikode, Kerala, India) is a poet, novelist and literary reviewer in Kerala, a southern state in India. He writes both in Malayalam, his native language and English. His poems have been translated into many languages and published in the United States and Europe. A regular contributor for The Hindu, where he writes literary reviews mostly in English. Although he enjoys a well-established place among the contemporary poets of Malayalam and started publishing poems in the early 1980s, he is not a prolific writer. There are 3 collections of poetry in Malayalam to his credit to date.

I remember the five-hour marathon I ran from one bookstore to the other in Trivandrum to get a copy of this book before the release of the movie, Njan, which is an onscreen adaptation of it. At last, I was so happy when I got an old unsold copy from a small bookstore opposite the Kerala Secretariat in the Statue Junction.

I was amazed at the way how T.P. Rajeevan magically dealt the history to create a fictional masterpiece.

I am a person who loves history, and I am familiar with almost all the historical things mentioned in this book. Still, I was unable to differentiate it from the fictional elements brilliantly entangled with it by the author.

This is a unique piece of fiction that you should never miss.

തൂലിക കൊണ്ട് ചരിത്രത്തിൽ കോട്ടൂർ എന്നാ പ്രതിഭാസത്തെ കൂട്ടി ചേർക്കുകയാണ് ടി.പി . രാജീവൻ . കേരത്തിലെ ഇന്ത്യയിലെ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ സമരത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായ വ്യക്തികളെയും സംഭവങ്ങളെയും ഒരു പോലെ സന്നിവേശിച്ചു അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുകയാണ് എഴുത്തുകാരൻ. ഒരിടക്ക് വെച്ച് ഇങ്ങനെ ഒരാൾ കേരളത്തിൽ ജീവിച്ചിരുന്നു എന്ന് വരെ തോന്നിപോകും അത് പോലെ സംഭവങ്ങൾ വിവരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ചരിത്രത്തില തൂലിക കൊണ്ട് ഒരു മായ വലയം തീര്ക്കുന്ന ഒരു പുത്തൻ വായന അനുഭവം ആണ് കെ ടി എൻ കോട്ടൂർ എഴുത്തും ജീവിതവും.

The novel connects the life, writings, and transactions of KTN Kottoor to the historical events and real life people, mostly of pre independence period. The author cleverly sometimes highlights the mismatch of certain facts taken from different sources. This is a technique the author used to create authenticity of his writing as biographical. A bold tribute to the unsung hero who could have been but never lived. Sure he will live for ever in the minds of readers.

I think the the style of this book is very different from any other book in Malayalam I think. The biography of a person who never existed, but when other characters are the real persons who lived same time with the main character, the novelist creates a very unique situation, where he can criticize the social conditions of that time and policies of political organizations. I liked this book better than the author's previous work Paleri Manikyam.
