In the era of slavery in the Confederate South, Boone and Suzette have found love in the town of Whiteport, Virginia. Despite his status as a free man, Boone risks it all to be with Suzette and promises her freedom. Her master, Thomas Howell however, is less than pleased with their relationship. His plans for Suzette do not include her having a husband, and when Thomas discovers that the couple is secretly married he uses his aristocratic power to make their life together much harder.
Then, after Suzette gives birth to her and Boone's child, Boone leads her to do the unimaginable to emancipate their family and kidnaps Thomas' infant son, leaving a ransom note in their wake that sends Thomas into a furious frenzy!
Meanwhile, tension among the slaves escalates on the Howell Plantation as rumors of war spread throughout the town of Whiteport. Caught in the whirlwinds of political revolution and social justice, the town becomes divided just as much as the country. Can Boone and Suzette survive the odds, or will the institution of slavery overpower the institution of marriage?
Great story! This book weaves a story that puts you back in time. I could actually see this as if it were a movie playing in my head. A must read that will evoke so many emotions, so get ready! I hope there is a sequel! Oh and the love story in the midst of trauma was well done!
