Wiser With Jesus: Overcoming the Temptations that Hinder Your Relationships, Steal Your Time, Mar Your Decision–Making and Thwart Your Purpose

Rate this book
The biblical book of Proverbs exemplifies how to live life on this earth in the best way possible. However, rather than giving us step–by–step instructions on how to live a more efficient, productive, and successful life, the ancient book of Proverbs encourages us to meditate on the person, posture and pace of wisdom.

In our pursuit of wisdom as Christians, we find that ultimate wisdom is embodied in Christ. We must pursue wisdom as we would a person, relationally and with love. The posture of wisdom is one of humility and teachability, and the pace of wisdom encourages meditation rather than immediate action.

In this valuable book, Zack Eswine shows us how these things play out in our everyday lives. He emphasizes the importance of relating wisely to people, including to ourselves, before considering how to grow wiser in life skills. But to grow wiser of heart, whether with people or with life skills, wisdom invites us to prayer and community. Biblical wisdom invites us to seek wiser hearts in communal rather than lonely ways.

This book is a treasure for anyone seeking to live life more wisely.

A wonderful book to savor, to read slowly, to contemplate and to apply. Zack writes not as an expert, but as a fellow struggler with wisdom, who points us to the One who is the source and fountain of all wisdom, and whose wisdom is our hope! As he writes early on: “In contrast to Western Philosophy, which prioritizes content, Old Testament sages taught their students to approach wisdom not as an idea but as a person. ‘Blessed is the one who listens to ME, watching daily at MY gates, waiting beside MY doors (Prov. 8:34).’” (pg. 15).

And so, he tells us, “To grow wiser in heart, we must pursue wisdom as we would a person, relationally and with love.....Mark this down. Whenever we ask for wisdom, it’s Jesus we ask for.” (pg. 15).

In the first part of the book, I love his use of Prov. 1:22, to show that there are three kinds of ‘companions’ we encounter in the world: 1. simple ones (naive), 2. scoffers, and 3. fools. ‘How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge?’.

Zack interweaves the teachings of Proverbs and how they point to Jesus and how they help us with pictures of his own stories and the stories of those he has known, pastored, been hurt by, and helped. Throughout the book, Zack seeks to give us hope in the wisdom that comes from Jesus and that is Jesus Himself, and to help us wisely apply not only His teaching, but the experience of His steadfast love. This is a great book for any believer, to help us see our own foolishness, to help us deal with the fools, naive, mockers and scoffers around us wisely, and to always give us hope in the Savior, “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Col. 2:3).

If you are ‘wise’ enough to see your need of wisdom, this is a great book to take up and read!

In Wiser with Jesus, Zack Eswine writes about overcoming the temptations that hinder your relationships, steal your time, affect your decision-making, and cloud your sense of purpose.

He walks you through the Proverbs, showing their structure and beauty along the way, illustrating both with Scripture and examples from his own life. He is insightful, noting how wisdom is meant for the everyday walk with God.

Wisdom in the Life of Christ

What I appreciated most was how he shows wisdom displayed in the life of Christ. He highlights the importance of relating wisely to others—and to ourselves—before focusing on life skills or personal growth.

Pastorally warm, this book will change the way you see the Proverbs — opening your eyes to the wisdom found deep in God’s Word and in the world around you.

I received a media copy of Wiser with Jesus and this is my honest review. @diveindigdeep

Chapter 8 of this book is simply outstanding as it explores how we can make decision knowing and trusting in the steadfast love of God. We don’t decide so we’re loved depending on what decision we make, we can decide because we know we are loved.

The rest of the book is helpful as it challenges our misconceptions about time and ageing and wisdom but chapter 8 alone almost made this a 5 star book.

A book that causes the reader to pause and think. It is not a book to read in one sitting. I found that it needs time to ponder what is said in each chapter.

The book will need re-reading many times if one is to gain true advantage.

This will read you more than you read it, so get ready to chew the cud bit by bit. Few writers have the ability to do what Eswine does here.
