The Watermelon Route by Quentin Greban- Belgian- Translation in Hindi language by Shivnarayan Gaur- Children’s Illustrated Colour Picture Book- The book narrates the story of a tribal young boy Sasson. When this boy is visiting the market with his father, he witnesses a young girl who is moving with her goats. Sasson falls in love with the girl at first sight. He wishes to impress her with a gift. Sasson feels that watermelon would be an appropriate gift for her. He picks up ten watermelons from his farm and places them in a basket. He places the basket on his head. The basket is heavy but he feels he will be able to carry to her house. In love, on gift is heavy. The girl would like the gift as girls are romantic. Sun is hot. Sasson is tired. He sits down to rest. He finds that a man is moving with his cow. He exchanges the cow for four watermelons. He places himself and watermelons on the cow and moves but soon the cow is tired of the heat and weight. Next, he finds a camel vendor. He exchanges four watermelons for the camel who also tires soon. Now he purchases an old elephant in exchange of one watermelon. Still they are not able to move far. Sasson carries all on his head but he is tired and thirsty. Sasson eats the watermelon and reaches the house of the girl. He knocks at her door. She comes out and faces him. Sasson has prepared a locket of watermelon seeds. He gifts the locket to the girl. She kisses and expresses her love for Sasson. Sasson feels shy. Girls are aware that boys feel shy when they face girls. Coloured illustrations help the reader in relating to the story. I have read the Hindi language translation of this book.
