Chilling, fascinating insight into the new generation of hitmen (and a woman) as the authors acerbically observe at the beginning no longer are they of the maturity and professionalism of 'Le Samourai' the character so brilliantly portrayed by fedora-wearing Delon in stetson-wearing Melville's classic film. This generation are wet behind the ears -- some like Mathys are just 16 -- and care little who gets killed (a series of examples of collateral victims at the end of the book -- 24-year-old Socayna, 10-year-old Fayed, Paris estate agent Ruben Azoulay bring a frog to one's throat and highlight the callous brutality of the sociopaths that wield the guns.
The common thread of the source of the 'narcohomicides' (a term coined by the exhausted and hard-pressed prosecutor) is Marseille...largely two gangs Yoda and DZ...and it all started...in the most banal of circumstances on member of the gang throwing an ice cube at an opposing member in a Thai night club because of a dispute over a girl....pathetic and yet sparked murder after murder.
The subjects range from the well known members of this roll call of infamy Mohammed Amra and Cesar-award winning actor Dylan Roberts -- who despite his well earned gong could never leave his seedy Marseille roots behind him (one footnote I was astonished that despite winning the Cesar for most promising male newcomer his subsequent films one with Jean Dujardin her was paid 3,000 and 5,000 euros only.) -- to 'unknowns' Mateo just 20 responsible allegedly for six hits but came from a background one would not associate with such acts -- comfortable upbringing house with a pool etc...blamed it all on his father leaving home when he was six...well ma belle many others have forged decent hardworking lives for themselves from worse upbringings....
It is shocking, eye-opening, jaw-dropping but brilliant.
