“Finding a Path”

Do you believe in destiny – about predefined outcomes that happen regardless of the way you live your life? Are there other qualifiers that define destiny – does the end result need to be a major life event or something that impacts how you live your life and what other choices maybe be made? In Just Destiny, author Theresa Rizzo constructs characters and a storyline that begs the age old question about whether or not we end up in certain situations, living a certain life, regardless of all the planning we do in life.

Just Destiny is a complex story filled with heartache and the turmoil about accepting what is and moving on, and about fighting for what we believe is right. We see our main character, Jenny Harrison go through a major life event, a major loss and then use the experience to find her purpose. The basis of the story is whether or not Jenny can win a legal battle, brought about by her deceased husband’s uncle, to use her husband’s sperm much like any other case of “organ donation”. Jenny’s motivation was questionable but understandable all the same. Logic tells you that doing this would only inhibit Jenny from moving on, but really, how is that any different than if they had already had children? They built a life together and this would just have an extension of that, no? As a reader, that’s what you’re forced to consider. Throughout the story we are given clues and eventually we find out about secrets on both sides of the court case, within both Jenny’s and Gabe’s family, that will impact how the battle is fought, and eventually, the trial’s outcome.

But that’s just part of what the story is about. This story is also largely about the development of romantic love from friendship. Jenny’s neighbor and best friend Steve Grant is there to help her pick up the pieces and deal with her grief, he’s experiencing his own grief as Jenny’s husband Gabe was his best friend. What follows is the slow realization, on bother characters parts, that there could or should be more between them - even after one thinks they have found their one true love, Steve’s relationship with Jenny forces her to realize what’s she’s learned about herself from loving Gabe and helps her come to terms with personal growth.

One of the strongest aspects of this book is the dialogue writing. From the daily & mundane conversations, the conflicts between would be fiancé’s and friends, and especially with the courtroom testimony and activities. These scenes are very believable and well written – even with my limited knowledge of court cases, the dialogue rings true.
In Just Destiny one of the central characters muses “I believe we each have our own path to travel. Someone we make false starts and detours, but we have this internal compass that knows our true oath. We just have to listen to it.” I’d like to believe this is true – that if we listen to our instinct, our hearts, yes, we find our destiny.

Since I wrote the book, naturally, I think it's wonderful. It's great for anyone who likes a good romance with a little extra in the plot. This story would make a great book club read, stimulating tons of questions. And I'd love to be at each book club meeting to hear the discussion and listen o everyone's opinions.

What would you do if your world fall apart? What would you do if your husband is declared brain-dead and you lose the baby you're carrying at the same time? Would you preserve that chance in conceiving his child? Is it worth going to court and have your life publicly exposed?

Jenny fought to hold on to something that was to be hers and Gabe's, her husbands. I admit I don't quite agree on her decision... but I understood and respected it. But then again, I don't quite agree with most of her choices, like not telling Gabe she was pregnant for one. But she owned her mistakes and learned from it.

I love that I got to read Gabe's thoughts and feelings for Jenny.

And there's the hot and sexy Steve, Jenny's neighbour and best friend... But Steve loves Jenny more than just friends... though he fought against his feelings, to the extent of getting himself engage with someone he didn't love. And though he doesn't quite agree with what Jenny is doing, he supported her all the way. The sacrifice he made to support Jenny... you can't help but love him... I thought he was perfect. His character is definitely one of the most develop in the story.

I enjoyed reading everybody's opinion on such a touchy issue... even George's, Gabe's uncle, the opposing party, the villain of the story.... Though I would really just rather strangle him.

The book started off slow.... but it did pick up its pace along the way. I loved reading the court scenes the most! The controversy of the issue, its legal, medical and ethical areas, it is pretty touchy.... Ms. Rizzo must have made thorough research on such cases... it was definitely most intriguing.... just fascinating.

A surprising read and I loved it! It is edgy, romantic, heartbreaking, and enlightening. Written in multi-POV.

"I believe we all have our own path to travel. Sometimes we make false starts and detours, but we have this internal compass that knows our true path. We just have to listen to it."

Jenny Harrison is the proud and loving wife/step-mother to her humanitarian Doctor husband, and his two teenage children Alex, and Ted. They have a good life, and good friends Steve and his Fiance Annie, right next door. A promising future lies ahead of them, until an argument spins out of control and Jenny is trapped in a nightmare that ceases to end.

Without warning, Jenny has to battle in court, and old family secrets surface. By refusing to give in, she'd put a big bulls-eye on her forehead. But Jenny takes things one day at a time, and tries to keep herself from falling apart.

Just Destiny, by Theresa Rizzo is a women's fiction story that is guaranteed to touch your heart. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys stories that mix romance with courtroom drama. At times controversial, Just Destiny touches on love, revenge, and the what ifs in life.

Definitely a book worth reading. 4 Stars!

I haven't read a book like this in a very long time. This book has everything wrapped up into one: Romance, Heartache, self-discovery, a suspenseful trial, and most importantly this book is one that makes you stop and think and question what you believe is right or wrong. I don't know about you guys but this is something that I do not see in many stories and it is something that I realized that I want to see more of in books.

This beautiful yet heart breaking story is about a 28 year old journalist named Jenny who fell in love and married a man is who twelve years older than her. Gabe is a brilliant philanthropic doctor who is the father of 2 college - aged children. Jenny feels that she has it all in her marriage. Love and two step- children who she adores. When Jenny and Gabe first got married Jenny had decided that she did not want children, but as time progresses she stars having doubts. Andas "destiny" sometimes works she finds out that she is pregnant. As Gabe and her go on a mini-vacation to celebrate their two year anniversary she attempts to find a way to tell Gabe about her pregnancy. But before she is able to tell him the truth, tragedy strikes and Gabe is hit by a car. Ambulance quickly arrives at the scene and they transport him to the hospital, but his condition is what the medical field calls, DOA - Dead on Arrival. He is completely brain dead and he is put on life support.

As Jenny trys to decide what to do; keep Gabe on life support, take him off, donate his organs, tragedy strikes again and she miscarries her baby. At this point all she can think about is that she can't lose her husband and her baby at once. So as she donates his organs she also has one more request, she wants to extract some of his semen, so can still have his baby. This raises some eyebrows, but none more than Gabe's uncle George As his legal guardian George feels that this is completely illegal and tells Jenny she will take him to court and stop her.

Just writing about the plot of the story I can continue on an write an essay. There is so much going on that if I addressed all the key points of this book, then this would be longest blog post EVER. I bet you can tell just from those couple of paragraphs that this is an emotional book. There are books that make you cry and then there are books that effect you so much that you can feel the main characters distress all the way to your bones and that is what this book did to me. Even though this book was emotionally draining, the writing and the plot development was so great that I did not put this book down for one moment. I was actually FORCED to put this book down when my Ipad battery died and I was no a very happy camper.

Reading about this way Jenny was attempting to pick up her life after Gabe's death was heartbreaking but yet so realistic. Her determination and struggle at every turn was so inspiring. As someone who just finished nursing school some of the challenges Jenny faced were ones we talked about in school. And how it is so important to discuss with your love ones what your wishes regarding resuscitation are. These are hard discussion, but oh so necessary.

And then this court case. This whole idea of whether Jenny had a right to her husbands sperm since he was unable to give consent was so thought-provoking. I was completely torn in to. There was the part of me that believed YES give this woman a chance to have her dead husbands child. And then there was the logical part of me that said maybe this is not such a good idea. All in all Theresa Rizzo does a great job at defending both sides of the argument and allowing the reader to come up with their own opinion.

During the court case some things are revealed from both sides. Both Jenny and George have some skeletons in the closet. I have to admit I completely did not see Jenny's twist coming. And the way it was revealed was one that completely threw me off guard. Not because there was a dramatic build up but because of how it was just thrown out in a memory. I almost did not believe what I had read and had to go back and re-read the scene. George's secret I have to saw I guessed correctly in a bit of foreshadowing in the beginning of the story. AND YES THERESA IF YOU ARE READING THIS, I GUESSED CORRECTLY!

I have gone this far in this review and I have yet to discuss another great part of this book. When Jenny's world falls apart, helping her pick up the pieces is Gabe and her best friend Steve. He is her rock and shoulder to cry on during this difficult time. But Gabe too has a secret. And before you guys all go thinking that this is an obvious love story, girl's husband dies and he falls for his best friend, it is everything BUT that because there is 2 big problems. Steve is engaged to marry someone and else and second he thinks that Jenny's plan to have Gabe's baby is wrong.

There is so much to this amazing book and it honestly a MUST READ for everyone!

Just Destiny by Theresa Rizzo is an emotionally electrifying journey filled with controversial tension, courtroom drama and an in-your-face awakening for Jeni as she learns how those around her perceive the person she is as she fights for the right to use her late husband’s sperm to impregnate her.

Jeni’s journey to a newfound self-awareness of the person she is, who she is becoming and who she wants to be is filled with miles of painful potholes, dark tunnels and more twists and revelations than a mountain road. Theresa Rizzo has made a statement about love, need and loss, that is thought-provoking to say the least. Through it all, she never once tries to force the reader to agree or disagree, and in the end, when you think, this is it, I KNEW that was going to happen, she cleverly throws in one more heart-stopping twist, that in turn leaves the reader romantically charmed and slightly taken aback.

If you have ever had any thoughts about if it’s possible for a man and woman to be platonic friends, Jeni’s relationship with her neighbor raises this issue, perfectly timed and choreographed to play into the story well. Do you have feelings regarding the use of a deceased husband’s sperm, this is huge to the story. Is it anyone’s concern? Is the sperm of the deceased different than harvesting organs to save the lives of those who need them? Is risking putting another generation at risk for a genetically transmitted disease not to be considered?

Ms Rizzo is telling a story of love, of need and of acceptance that the past cannot be relived. There are no do overs, but there is a future to be lived. Jeni is not always likable, but she learns to be honest with herself, a huge step. So many secrets have been withheld, only to meet the light of day like graffiti on the walls of the world. Beautifully written under the guidance of Ms. Rizzo’s creative touch, both the story and the characters come alive and leave their imprint on your mind. This is not pure romance, the drama is high, the intrigue is taut, souls are bared and the aftermath is laid at our feet to ponder.

This is the second book I have read by this author and she has a really nice writing style. Both books have been well thought out and revolve around court cases. The topic of this second book is quite controversial which would make this book a great choice for book clubs and those who like to hash out and debate issues that are quite often divided. There is a list of discussion questions at the end that can be used as a guide if needed.
Jenny abruptly becomes a young widow. At the time of her husbands death she was pressured to make a decision to donate his organs. Knowing he would want to save lives she agrees but at the same time she requested to have his semen collected and frozen so she could conceive his child. What seemed like a harmless and logical decision to her at the time turned into an ugly lawsuit by a family member to block her from access to his nephews semen.
The question up for debate is this: Is there a difference between using a persons organs to save lives that already exist vs. using that persons semen (or a woman's eggs) to create life that they may or may not have wanted. Especially when they will have no say whatsoever in how many children are conceived and obviously will not be around to raise them. Should anyone be allowed to proceed in doing so without any documentation from the deceased expressing their wishes? I know what I think... but, I'll just keep my opinions to myself!
Alongside the controversial court case there are also some side stories. We have Steve, Jenny's neighbor, who has always loved her but out of respect for his friend kept his distance. He is engaged to a very self absorbed woman and now finds himself drawn to Jenny out of concern for her well being. This is no doubt causing conflicting emotions for him and what he really wants.
This is a very twisty, turny story with lots of surprise reveals throughout... once again, as I said of the last book... felt like an episode of a soap opera. This is not a bad thing... I used to love my daily soaps! You just never knew what was going to happen next. Makes for some very engaging storytelling and keeps you on your toes.
I will admit that I wasn't very fond of Jenny. But, at the same time she was grieving and her reactions and decisions were very conflicting and not well thought out as a result. The ending did not surprise me but at the same time I found her roller coaster of emotions frustrating. So, the jury is out on how I feel about the outcome.
All in all this was a great read, probably not for everyone... especially anyone who really doesn't want to get into a moral debate about the issue of in vitro fertilization. I actually found this very eye opening. Makes me want to ensure my wishes are loud and clear in my will when it comes to organ donation. It's one of those things that will just make it easier on those we leave behind.

Thanks to the author for the complimentary copy of this book!

I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy of this book directly from the author in exchange for my honest thoughts. I'm not sure how she found me whether it be from Goodreads or my blog but I am sure glad that she did.

This was a well written emotional account of the aftermath of a tragic accident. Mix in the controversial issue of conceiving a child after someone has passed away and it has the formula for a captivating read.

The character development was really well done. I liked both Jenny and Steve from the very first page. They were two individual characters with a strong bond of friendship and I could feel every emotion that each went through as the story progressed. There were just enough secrets to keep you interested without having so many that it was unrealistic. The relationship between these two was understated yet powerful at the same time

I liked the fact that a controversial issue was the focal point of the story. Normally when a story gets to the courtroom it tends to lose my attention a little bit. This was not the case in this story. In fact I felt this is where it really picked up steam. This was the point where my household chores got ignored and I stayed glued to my tablet.

A couple of random points

I loved the fact that there was a golden retriever in the story. Mine was curled up with me the whole time I was reading the story
I thought the ending (no spoiler) to the story was appropriate
I believe there will be a sequel so I will be sure to partake once it is released
Overall a really good read!

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

OH MY HEART STRINGS .. man they weren't just pulled .. they were yanked!

I remember you Theresa Rizzo. The last book I reviewed for you left me an absolute wreck and ball of mush, and WHAMO .. you just did it again! You can tell a great story and captivate a reader, but what I love the most .. I felt this story could be real. No imaginary world, imaginary place but a collection of words about a situation that surely is controversial and that someone somewhere has faced! I really enjoy that aspect of this book.

So without many spoilers .....

Jenny Harrison is living a happy life married to a great man and then just like that *SNAPS* everything changes. Her husband Gabe was in a horrific accident and is now classified "brain dead". Jenny faces the decision to pull the plug. Another topic surfaces as well ... donation of organs. Devastated, Jenny grieves hard and although it was decided earlier by the married couple to not have children, Jenny wishes to retrieve her husbands sperm and have a piece of him with her always. Does she have the right to this?? Clearly, Gabe cannot give his consent nor did he fill out any paperwork that identified his opinion on donation of organs. Does this decision then go to Jenny as his spouse? Before we know it Jenny is thrown into the fight of her life as Gabe's family members oppose her wishes and will do all they can to prevent Jenny from conceiving his child.

Steve Grant is Jenny's best friend and an attorney. He agrees to help her any way he can with this fight despite his own feelings on the topic. He also has secretly been in love with Jenny (she doesn't know this) since they became neighbours but respected her marital status. Now Steve faces his own uncertainty of his future and how to, if to progress with Jenny.

This story flourishes and blooms in the court room. Theresa must of done some serious research on this topic, because all the views, be it moral, ethics, law, emotion etc.. were well represented. So much so in fact that I found myself feeling like a tennis ball being exchanged from side to side. Never once did I feel I had a stern opinion on one particular side but more of an understanding of how both sides perhaps felt. Some characters were blatant ^%%(*)_(* and the methods/threats used to try and sway the other were cruel. Jenny herself annoyed me at times as well.

Truely an incredible story that came to life and knocked me on my rear end. There was no clear cut solution and after reading this I still feel undecided on how I felt on the topic. I do know however, that I now have an empty tissue pack that was almost full when I started this book.

Well done Theresa Rizzo, you cut deep and to the quick and because of that, you are memorable!

HAPPY READING! :)

Jenny’s husband, Gabe, dies as he pushes her from the path of an oncoming truck. They have been happily married for two years, and Jenny has just discovered that she is pregnant. It was an unintentional pregnancy. Gabe has two college-age children from his first marriage, and, at the time of their marriage, he and Jenny had both denied any interest in having children. As Gabe lies in the hospital, Jenny miscarries.

When her husband is declared to be brain dead, Jenny is called on to make decisions. She must decide whether to disconnect Gabe from life support. She is asked to donate his organs. Even though he was a physician, he left no directives.

Jenny consents to removing him from life support. She donates all of his organs that can be used. She asks that his sperm be collected so that she can be artificially inseminated and have his child, even though he has died.

Jenny finds that people have strong feelings concerning her plans, and the author does an excellent job as she presents an array of reactions. Nearby sperm banks refuse to accept the sperm because her brain dead husband had not given his consent to have them stored. Gabe’s uncle objects to the termination of life support, to organ donation, and to the collection of Gabe’s sperm. He sues to prevent Jenny from being inseminated. The press senses a sensational story. She has difficulty finding an attorney who will represent her. Steve, her next door neighbor who has had a crush on Jenny since she and Gabe moved in, finds the idea of insemination to be disgusting. In contrast, Jenny’s mother and Judith, Gabe’s first wife, are totally supportive.

As the case unfolds in court, family secrets are revealed. Jenny ultimately must decide if she really wants a child or whether she wants a child simply as a means to hang on to her husband.

Although it would never have occurred to me that Jenny’s plan would have caused her any difficulty at all, I ultimately understood some of the negative reactions, although I failed to sympathize with them. Gabe’s uncle still strikes me as a vindictive, bitter old man. Steve still seems to me to be an insensitive, insecure clod! I somehow do not believe that the author intended me to feel this way about Steve, but I’m just saying…When you finish the book you should understand!!

Just Destiny is an excellent book! It is well-written and so believable, an absorbing story, one that is difficult to put down. The conclusion is satisfactory, although I would have preferred a different ending.

Theresa Rizzo’s first book He Belongs to Me, was outstanding. In Just Destiny, she has another winner!

Although a bit unorthodox in nature, I just fell in love with Jenny and the struggles she faced all by herself.

In walks her best friend and Gabe's too, conveniently her next door neighbor as well. Steve has always stood by Jenny and has kept her sane. Can he stick by her through this too? The friendship between Steve and Jenny has surpassed years. He was there for her in the early years of her and Gabe and he was the one she told a secret to, so big it could shatter many lives. Jenny trusts Steve with everything but can she trust him to understand why she needs to do this?

This book wraps every plot point in to one. Suspense, romance, friendship, self-reflection, court room drama and so much more. This is the book that will make you stop and think, ask yourself the question: would you do this in Jenny's shoes? There are secrets to reveal. There's circumstances to come to terms with. There's heartbreak and uncertainty but the characters each play their parts so well. This book had so much amazing in it, it is difficult to write about without those same emotions coming out.

As you can probably see from my review so far, this book was emotional, but well worth the read. The author's writing pulls you in and makes it hard for you to even take bathroom breaks as every chapter has a new twist. I felt this book hard to the point that I refused to put it down till I was finished.

The writing by Theresa Rizzo was just so great. I have recently read her first book called "He Belongs To Me" which is another amazing book that doesn't disappoint. All I can say is Theresa knows how to write with emotion, suspense and depth that will leave the reader breathless in anticipation for more.

"Just Destiny" is an emotional, roller coaster ride of a book that deserves to be on the top of everyone's "to be read pile".

**TARA'S REVIEW**

*4.5 Love Thy Neighbor Stars*

Jenny Harrison had it all, a wonderful older husband, a job as a journalist, two teenage step children. All was wonderful in her life, until while on a weekend getaway her world is turned upside down when an accident takes the life of her husband Gabe. As Gabe lies in a hospital on life support, decisions must be made about their fate.

Steve Grant, their neighbor and friend, supports Jenny throughout the aftermath of Gabe's death. He may not always agree with the decisions Jenny has made, but stands by her non the less, because deep inside, his feelings for Jenny are more then he cared to admit.

Through the turmoil of a legal battle, Steve stands by Jenny until the bitter end, when he finally reveals to Jenny his true feelings and what he has always felt in his heart. Will Jenny feel the same?

"He hadn't wanted to love Jenny. Lord knows he tried hard to unlove her."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Overall, I absolutely loved everything about this book. The storyline was very well written, and it kept me guessing the entire time. There was a perfect blend of angst and suspense. Just when I would think I had the entire story figured out, Theresa would throw something new into the mix, and shakes things up in a good way. The book had a lot of twists and turns, and I found myself holding my breath several times wondering just what was going to come next.
Just Destiny has it all, love, angst, heartbreak, true love, friendship, family unification. It will tug at your heart strings and leave you breathless. There is no cliff hanger (although I wouldn't mind knowing a little more ie: flash forward 5 years) and there is a HEA for everyone involved.
I would highly recommend picking up this book.
Despite their age difference, Gabe and Jenny have the ideal marriage. Although Jenny agreed early on that they would remain childless, she's excited to find out she's pregnant but nervous about telling Gabe. Then tragedy strikes. Gabe dies suddenly after being hit by a car, leaving Jenny bruised and in charge of so many decisions. Gabe never stipulated anything about his death, and Jenny is grieving too much to make any decisions. Jenny finds an unlikely alibi in Judith, Gabe's ex-wife. She's a pillar of strength. She stands by Jenny's side and assists in any way she can. When Gabe's Uncle George discovers that Jenny has agreed to donate Gabe's organs, he is angered but powerless to stop it. However, he is determined to prevent Jenny from using the sperm that a doctor had taken post mortem. He acquires a restraining order and fights Jenny in court.
Jenny is a loving but somewhat immature wife in the beginning. She grows in strength and maturity as she overcomes her grief and fights for her right to use her husband's sperm. She is caring, understanding, and gentle. Most of all, she wants to honor her husband with a child he was unable to have with her.
Although Steve is a minor character, he shines throughout the novel. He's Jenny's neighbor and Gabe's friend and helps Jenny in any way he can. Steve discovers for himself what true love is. It's not a fleeting moment with his beautiful fiancee, but a lifetime with a woman who cherishes him. He sees the ideal marriage that Gabe and Jenny had and that Jenny is the epitome of womanhood. When he compares her to his fiancee. he sees how transparent their relationship is.
The author raises an ethical issue with Jenny's battle. Just because it's scientifically possible to retrieve Gabe's sperm and artificially inseminate her, does that make it right?
This is an enjoyable novel that will keep you turning the pages.
Just Destiny Theresa Rizzo
4.5 Stars
Jenny and Gabe had decided children weren’t in their future, she wasn’t interested in starting a family and he already had a son and daughter from a previous marriage. When Jenny finds out she is expecting, rather than tell Gabe she is already pregnant she tells him she has changed her mind and now wants to start trying for a baby. Gabe’s unenthusiastic reaction disappoints Jenny and she storms off in a temper leaving Gabe to follow. As he goes after her a car hits him and his injuries leave him fighting for his life.
Just Destiny is an emotional story covering a very controversial subject. Should a wife be allowed access to her husbands sperm and use it to create a baby after his death, without his consent? With modern day technology all kinds of things are possible but with this new knowledge a mountain of ethical and moral questions are raised, and who knows what the right answers are. Theresa did a fantastic job at giving the reader the opportunity to see all sides of the argument and make up their own mind about the issue.
Filled with secrets and untruths this novel drew out a variety of emotions in me and I switched sides numerous times before the end. Gabe’s uncle frustrated me, he should never have kept the secret, taking the choice about parenthood away from Gabe was cruel to say the least and I can’t understand why he did it. I didn’t agree with Jenny’s decision, I know she was hurting but I don’t think it was what Gabe would have wanted and I think it is quite frightening that a case like this could be brought to court.
Although a rather sad and depressing book I would highly recommend this to lovers of the likes of ‘My Sisters Keeper’, and suggest a box of tissues by your side as you read.
I loved Theresa Rizzo's first book, He Belongs to Me, and really didn't think I could love Just Destiny any more, but I did. I found this book completely impossible to put down.
What I love about Rizzo's writing is that her premises are so believable. While reading Just Destiny, I kept having the feeling that Jenny's tragedy could happen to me, or anyone else I know. Only a great writer can make you put yourself in a character's shoes, and Rizzo does that for me every time.
Jenny was an easy character to relate to. I really felt for her: first she loses her husband, then her entire life is made public through a legal battle. Jenny desires nothing more than to have Gabe's child and keep a piece of him with her always. However, Gabe's uncle (who raised him) is adamantly opposed and takes Jenny to court over the issue.
Jenny is not alone in her battle: she has a supportive attorney but most of all she has Steve, her neighbor and best friend. Steve was best friends with both Jenny and Gabe and therefore is personally invested in Jenny's case. I liked watching their relationship grow throughout the story.
The legal battle was interesting and added another layer of intensity to the story, while continuing the heartfelt premise of Jenny's struggle to cope with her husband's sudden death. Rizzo threw me for a loop with the ending, and at first I wasn't sure how I felt about it, but upon further reflection, I think it was perfectly suited to this story and the characters. My one wish is that she would have included an epilogue because I wanted to read more about Jenny's happiness.
Just Destiny was so many things, but at its heart it was about personal growth and I loved that. I love Rizzo's intense, all-consuming writing style. Her second novel is even better than the first, and I can't wait to read what she comes up with next!
**An Advance Review Copy was received from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.**
Jenny and Gabe Harrison were happily married for two years when Jenny was found to be pregnant. As they had no interest in children Jenny keeps this secret to herself while trying to convice Gabe to change his mind on having a child together. In the meantime, tragedy strikes and Gabe is seriously injured in an accident saving Jenny. While Gabe is in a coma, Jenny miscarries their child losing the last piece of Gabe she had.
The events the follow are so unbelievably amazing, it's crazy. Jenny decides to donate all of Gabe's organs and asks for some of his sperm to be retrieved in order to attempt to conceive their child in a way to have a piece of Gabe to love in his absence.
Gabe's family members, including his uncle, proceed to take Jenny to court to fight her plans. Jenny's neighbor Steve is an attorney with feelings for Jenny and represents Jenny in the trial.
My favorite parts of the book were those of the trial. Working in the legal field myself, I found them to be true to point as far as the processes one must go through throughout a trial.
This book made me cry and cheer throughout making it incredibly difficult to stick to one side. All the way up to the end, I still wasn't sure if I was going to agree with the outcome.
I definitely would suggest this book to anyone who loves a good romantic, legal drama and I thank the author, Theresa Rizzo for this opportunity to be a part of her book tour!
Now as an added feature, I was able to interview Theresa for you all! These are my favorite parts of being a book blogger. I love getting to know the authors I grow to love through their work.
I hope you enjoy!
Nicely done! Definitely a good, original read. This story line might be considered controversial. But then, I love controversy, anything that gets people to think, anything that gets me to think - "What would I do?"
*Minor spoiler*
Jenny's husband has an accident and is brain dead just before giving her the baby she so desperately wants. When approached about donating his organs a thought is planted in her head. Would it be possible to take out and freeze his sperm so she cam get pregnant? I won't tell you any more, but there are some surprises and twists.
I will tell you that I see nothing at all wrong with this. He was her husband, she now has the control over what happens to his body, he is "brain dead" so it doesn't matter to him either way - so I say... Sure, go for it!
Very good character development. You like those you are meant to like and hate those you are suppose to hate. I did really like Jenny, I felt her pain, grief, sorrow, and determination. I was with her and supported her all the way. And even though Steve was a little wishy washy I liked him too.
I love courtroom dramas, and this had some of that thrown in there, and there was also a nice little romance. But mainly it was about a woman getting back on her feet and going on with life after tragedy.
Aaaannnddd... Would make a great movie! :-)
This was a very nice, quick, heartwarming, and different kind of book. I thought it was well written and very enjoyable. This was my first from Theresa - I would definitely read another.
Thank you Theresa Rizzo for sending me an e-book copy of your book for my honest review!
Jenny Harrison was unbelievably and overwhelmingly happy in her marriage to Gabe Harrison. Everyone always thought they had the perfect marriage, but now Jenny’s looking to add an addition to their family – a child. On a weekend getaway, Jenny tells Gabe she’s thinking about children but doesn’t let him know she’s a few weeks pregnant yet. When Gabe is struck by a car while they are biking, he is left brain dead and Jenny’s world implodes. At the hospital, Jenny is approached by a transplant coordinator asking about organ donation and since Jenny miscarried from the stress, she requested his sperm be extracted and frozen. Jenny wants to conceive their child to have a piece of Gabe in her life, but his uncle is so opposed he’s suing Jenny to keep her from using the frozen sperm. Jenny turns to her best friend, an attorney, for help…but he may not want to help her for his own selfish reasons…
JUST DESTINY brings up a lot of ethical, social and legal questions and will spark up a lot of debate between readers. Readers only meet Gabe for a short while and Jenny is the main focus of the story. Jenny has a checkered past, but seems to have matured in her time with Gabe for the most part. There are more than a few shocking secrets unveiled during the arduous trial which keep the decision on a precarious edge. JUST DESTINY is engaging and thought-provoking. It felt to me as if JUST DESTINY demonstrates that no matter our pasts, we all deserve happiness. I don’t want to give any of the details or my opinion on Jenny’s decisions – just read JUST DESTINY.
Just Destiny is an emotionally charged love story from the beginning to the end. I was mesmerized by the range of emotions I felt while reading this book. I was deeply affected by the subject matter and I caught myself still thinking about this book days after finishing it.
The storyline is quite believable. The main characters deal with such an array of emotions, such as blissful happiness followed by deep desperation and total devastation. They also experience the miracles and the pitfalls of modern technology, family betrayal, lies, secrets and a very suspenseful court room battle.
Jenny Harrison had everything she ever wanted, and in the blink of an eye she loses it all. How can she survive? Everyone needs to read this book and follow the journey of Jenny’s life; hint…makes sure you have a box of tissues handy. We all take life for granted at one time or another. This story will remind you just how delicate and precious life can be.
Congratulations to author Theresa Rizzo for writing such an interesting and compelling story. Best book I’ve read in ages. Easily 5 STARS!
Just Destiny is emotional and heartbreaking. Whether you agree with Jenny's choices are not, this story forces you to think about what you would do if your world was suddenly turned upside down and you lost just about everything. Jenny chooses the path that she feels she needs to piece her life back together, and thankfully, she has some great friends and family to help her. Theresa Rizzo has managed to effectively portray a devastating tragedy and the emotional aftermath, and my heart went out to Jenny more than once during some particularly heart-tugging scenes. If you like contemporary women's fiction that makes you reach for the tissues, I would definitely recommend this one.
4.5 STARS
This book is not a typical love story with a typical HEA. If you are looking for a sweet, light-hearted read, turn away. If you are looking for an emotionally gripping story that makes you think and quite possibly question your own beliefs, Just Destiny is a book you will enjoy.
I love the plot line of this book. It's unique and not something that is done to death in other contemporary stories. I don't like spoilers, so I won't say too much, other than I love the twists and turns Theresa takes us on in Jenny's journey. Her life and what she makes of it; the decisions she faces, they are all so not what you're expecting, and that's what makes this book good.
I've given 5 stars to so many books... Some of them deserved it, some of them not that much. Now, after reading this book, I just can't put this very book next to them, just because it's much better than the rest and deserves nor 5 or 10 but 100 stars! It is an amazing book, worth the time spent reading it and also worth every drop of tear formed in my eyes while ugly crying on some emotional moments. Well done, Theresa! Thank you!
This is a great book that takes the reader through some amazing highs and thought provoking lows. It is a story of a woman hit with horrific tragedy and forced into a courtroom to realize her personal dream. Along the way she has the support of family and a dear friend but it is still an emotional journey and she is the only one fully invested in the complete outcome. I am new to this author and very pleasantly surprised. I highly recommend this novel.
There's not a lot of romance in this book, it's more about a woman working through a tragedy and her struggle to get what she wants from life after the death of her husband and her unborn baby.
I found myself crying right along with her more than once throughout the story.
I would recommend this to everyone. There's a lot of depth to the book, and the writing style is engaging.
This book was more than a simple love story. It made you feel and think, what would you do if your husband died and you wanted children. Are his sperm yours for you to decide, or can others really tell you what you can or can't do? I found the legal banter and questions interesting as well as the character interactions.
