And she thought facing a firing squad was bad…

When archaeologist Mara Garrett traveled to North Korea to retrieve the remains of GIs lost in combat, she never imagined she’d be arrested, convicted of spying, and sentenced to death. Her only hope is Curt Dominick, a powerful and ambitious US attorney who has his own reasons for wanting Mara back on US soil.

What starts off as a rescue mission morphs into a race across the Pacific. Someone is after Mara, and they’ll risk everything to stop her from reaching Washington, DC. Curt and Mara have little reason to trust each other and every reason to resist the heat that flares between them. Still, desire clashes with loyalty when they uncover a conspiracy that reaches the highest levels of government.

USA Today bestselling author Rachel Grant also writes thrillers as R.S. Grant. She worked for over a decade as a professional archaeologist and mines her experiences for storylines and settings, which are as diverse as excavating a cemetery underneath an historic art museum in San Francisco, survey and excavation of many prehistoric Native American sites in the Pacific Northwest, researching an historic concrete house in Virginia (inspiration for her debut novel, CONCRETE EVIDENCE), and mapping a seventeenth century Spanish and Dutch fort on the island of Sint Maarten in the Caribbean (which provided inspiration for the island and fort described in CRASH SITE).

She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her archaeologist husband and demanding cat.

RATING: 4/4.5 stars to Body of Evidence ★ ★ ★ ★

After bearing some reservation starting this series at its Inception following existing reader reviews, I skipped the opener to this saga and dove straight into its standalone successor. I bore few expectations heading into this, simply trusting that the thrill, threat and jeopardy of a high-stakes romantic suspense would take me exactly where I needed to go. And it accomplished just that with an active forward-setting momentum. If you like romantic suspense done well, I'm going to encourage you to read this. Its fluency pulled and its articulacy inspired. Exciting, well-plotted and exacting from the start, this brilliant and original tale leverages a wealth of intrigue in its favour. Excellently paced and researched, we're instantly embroiled in the precarious and rather perilous fate of our heroine, one Mara Garrett.

Mara may be the niece of a former Vice President, but it's her critical work with JPAC - a division dedicated to the recoup and retrieval of deceased US soldiers and servicemen - that inspired the greatest commitment to her cause, and her career as a forensic archeologist. After a mission gone wrong, the story opens up with Mara, through no fault of her own, on the wrong side of the law. Korean law. Far from the safe soil and homegrown law of the United States, she never would have imagined that this latest venture would see her falsely convicted. Sustaining her independence by pursuing dedicated work that truly fulfills her, Mara never thought she'd end up being tried by a notoriously extremist leadership. And despite the consistent danger level of her work, she certainly never foresaw herself being penaltied to death, faced with certain death, with only twenty-four hours to live.

As Mara faces what would have been her final few moments of life, she's saved by the unlikeliest envoy. And by the skin of her teeth, at that. Few US government prosecutors come as high-powered and ambitious as Curt Dominick. With a cutting and shrewd praxis and a powerful reputation, Curt's predatory ability to single out corrupt political personnel Indiscriminately sees him at the top of his field. Much to her saviour's dismay though, Mara remains loyal to the same man that Curt has every reason to believe is a traitor to the United States, and Mara's beloved uncle is his most recent target of some very critical allegations. But Curt is as dedicated to justice as Mara is to her own cause, and he won't stop until her sees the former VP and Raptor's mercenary organisation convicted for their crimes against the country. Even if Mara winds up caught in the cross-hairs.

Guilty and nothing but guilty, as far Curt is concerned, but equally guilty himself; of feeling more for his charge than is sensible and appropriate. But, after two long months of incarceration, as Mara finds herself falling into some form of unwarranted idealisation of a man who doesn't trust her, a highly focussed and controlled Curt is equally challenged by a great conflict of interest. The sharpest shark in his field of work is known for his bloodhound courtroom manner, not his ability for human sensitivity. But when an unexpected detour to follow up on some leads lands them both running for safety, delaying the most important case of Curt's career, the threat persists when it quickly becomes clear that Mara is being hunted. Never failing, at any given moment, to lose sight of his goal, Curt has to question whether he'll compromise a hard-earned reputation or his relationship with a woman he's come to both appreciate and admire in his quest to expose injustice and villainy.

If you're looking for your latest romantic suspense, I'm going to tell you to look no farther beyond the story of present interest. I'm also going to share that If you're a Rachel Grant fan or an ardent consumer of the romantic suspense division, I can only say that you'll quickly find yourself riveted by this sharp, smart, smooth and high-intensity read. A well-plotted storyline combined with smart characterisation, consistent peril, authoritative intensity and a background of deep suspense supported by a foreground of an action-centric setting; the central chemistry that arises between our love interests offers something to lose and something to gain, all in an immediate rush to outpace sudden harm.

Our male protagonist is torn between his fidelity to justice and his growing interest in Mara, and the threat to Mara's trust could be a man who can't put it above and beyond his driven quest. Targeted by mercenary operatives and powerful people, Grant's central characters are driven amidst the jeopardy, capable of moving in tandem with an intense plot but are also prone to errors of judgement as their personal desires are confronted by critical decisions. Curt and Mara are both at odds as much as they are an exception to those odds, but what I easily enjoyed was the author's approach to the central relationship. Despite a mutual, and instant, interest in each other, the two are challenged at the outset by what they want, what they can't have, and the urgency of what's being asked of them in an official capacity.

But Curt Dominick does what he does, and he does it well. Well enough for Mara to fear for her uncle's perceived innocence. This created a convincing tension that meets a suspenseful storyline with a likewise - mistrustful - semi-partnership. Contextually speaking, the author makes believable decisions for her characters and, in spite of the existing chemistry between Curt and Mara, a convincing reason underpins the romantic resistance in its earlier stages; and in its latter, as tough and touchy calls are made. Although the sexual chemistry is somewhat immediate and very mutual, we're made to wait until a more believable place in the story's timeframe until a sexual relationship begins. Additionally and comparatively it was the best decision the author could have made for this fictional relationship. Romance doesn't always get these important pieces right, even in the intense space of suspense, and founded upon a contextual decision that naturally makes sense and is supported by the storyline, Grant's relationship choices supports a reminder of the well-judged approach - and timing - of delayed gratification; something the romance genre does indeed take for granted in its susceptibility to precipitous and rather over-hasty decisions that see their love interests quick to forgo all else, including emotional resonance, in favour of uninvolved hypersexualism.

Additionally, as something else to cover, although I both understood the author's need to pacify Mara's current perception of Curt by introducing the hero-worshipping angle, coupled with a very recent ordeal that likely triggered that form of trauma response, I think our heroine's character arc could have survived without that particular flawed perspective. I have to say that I didn't find particular appeal in Mara's leanings for pedestaling her hero given the fact that Curt possessed flaws of his own. Mara's historical tendency to misjudge and idealise Curt's character spoke to some unreliability for an otherwise smart, determined, courageous and professionally adept academic who's cast in a rather dynamic role. By no means was I inordinately averse to the representation however, but It does undermine a sense of clarity in Mara's judgement. That being said, the author addresses this well enough and gives her heroine something to overcome, particularly when the proverbial shoe drops by way of a critical decision this story's hero makes which swiftly takes care of that in no uncertain terms. Remarking on the characterisation overall, Grant writes her character profiles as well as she incites a convincing plot. I equally appreciated the approach the author took to representing the baddies; they were agenda-driven and maintained believable (although highly unethical) intents for their offenses as opposed to the one-dimensional evil-doer who releases spontaneous bouts of a maniacal laughter at his own self-fulfilling exploits.

Nevertheless, Grant's Body of Evidence contributes to her action-paced and smartly-plotted body of work. Rachel Grant weaves a thrilling and intrigue-driven tale of what happens when a forensic archeologist narrowly escapes a terrifying ordeal only to be saved by the self-assured governmental attorney who's current case criminalises someone very important to her. And when an organisation that is doing everything possible to prevent a safe return, the reasons underpinning Mara's recent captivity becomes a vital part of Curt's case. But neither does the action nor the tension stop there. What follows is a ploy at staying alive as well as one of delayed gratification as immediate danger complements a mistrustful relationship that's inconvenienced by some deeper desires. A well-structured storyline courts the present jeopardy as much as it follows the tensity and hesitations of its central cast in this standalone suspense novel. And each sudden twist elevates the story's potential as aptly as it intimidates the tentativity of a budding relationship. Rachel Grant is a prescribed name in romantic suspense and you should definitely make some time for her titles that combine both, especially this rather exploit-driven romantic suspense series. High-risk from the start, I always came back excited for more. A must-read series for readers accustomed to and/or desiring a multiplicity of intrigue and political suspension where physical danger meets personal longing. A talented addition to one of my favourite genres; when romance and danger meets action and suspense, I'm impressed upon with nothing short of relish and fascination combined.

It is an absolute pleasure to write this review. What a pleasant surprise. I received this ARC from the author and publisher via Netgalley. I was curious at the premise of a American being convicted for crimes in North Korea. I assumed that it would have political intrigue, drama and suspense. This book delivers - in spades. It is a wonderful balance of tight, tension-filled action and hot romance.

The story: The former Vice President is in a lot of trouble. He has been indicted for influence peddling and is being prosecuted by the star of the US Attorney General's office, Curt Dominik. Curt Dominik is also the special envoy sent to North Korea at the request of the government to pick up Dr. Mara Garrett after being accused of being a spy. Dr. Garrett also happens to be the favorite niece of said VP.

On the surface it is a seemingly simple exchange, but things get crazy when murders happen, a plane blows up, and people are betrayed. We have Rapture, a notorious private security contractor, involved and things get more and more complicated. The events keep the readers on their toes and left wondering, "what's next?"

The characters: I liked the chemistry between Mara and Curt. She's strong-willed, smart, and a bit of a girlie girl with her tendency to heroify the men in her life. I like that Curt is attracted to Mara for her quiet dignity, strength of character and resolve. The relationship evolves over the course of the book. Curt has a conflict of interest and the stakes are high in this relationship. The sexual tension of "will they/won't they" works in this situation given the context of all that is going on around them. I don't think it is a surprise to anyone that there is a HEA, but how they get there is engaging and kept me frantically turning pages.

There is a particular thrill in discovering a new author. I am so excited to have found Rachel Grant and look forward to reading all of her previous book and anything else she publishes in the future.

IN A NUTSHELL:

Having read my share of romantic suspense this year, this one is one of my top three books of the year.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

WOW!!!
Usually the second book in a series is weaker than the first. NOT in this case!!! If possible it is even better!!!

Ms. Grant's writing style is fenomenal!!! I loved every page of this book! There's never a boring moment. Never a weak action. Never a contradiction! It's simply PERFECT!

Mara is a woman in big, big trouble and the worst thing is that she doesn't know why! who want to kill her? And why? She's struggling with everything that is happening to her and she deosn't know whome to believe. But she's strong and determined to find out!

Curt starts as strict and unflexible, but mellows as the story goes on. He's stuck with Mara and he deosn't want to believe her innocence, but with everything that happens to her he cannot deny that something is very wrong and that Mara could be an innocent.

Ohhhh.. I just LOVED this story and cannot wait to read the next installment!!!

Please, Ms. Grant, write quickly!!! :D

Another great romantic suspense from Rachel Grant! Body of Evidence is fast paced and riveting and the subject matter is very interesting from mercenaries to retrieval of servicemen lost in combat. This book like the first, Concrete Evidence, has such a great story that is never just a rehash of anything I've read before.

I can't wait to read many more books by this author!

Gripping from beginning to end. This fast paced action thriller snags you from the first chapter and doesn’t let go until the very last page.

When you read an enormous amount of suspense books you tend to run into the same story, different author. I can honestly say I have never read the things that were depicted in this book before. I don’t consider this a spoiler as its in the blurb but with an opening of the heroine, Mara Garrett, being on trial in North Korea for spying then being sentence to death by firing squad all in the first chapter you know you’re in for a wild ride. Let me tell you the action doesn’t stop there. It only gets bigger.

The heroine’s job was one I had not heard before. She goes into foreign countries to retrieve the bodies of service men lost in combat. This could range from WWII to current day. You could tell the author did her homework on Joint POW/MIA archaeologists and portrayed the work that the JPAC does with pride. JPAC’s latest retrieval has her team going to North Korea, a place we are not on friendly terms with and many protocols have to be met. When a team member betrays her, this gets her arrested and sentenced to death. Her savior comes in an unlikely ally. The man currently trying to put her uncle – the ex vice president – away for treason and making deals with terrorist, US attorney Curt Dominick. But if you think that that’s where the action ends think again.

Curt doesn’t know if he can trust Mara thinking she may know about her uncle’s crimes and be protecting him. Mara doesn’t trust Curt because there is no way her uncle could have committed what they are accusing him of but she is also struggling with a bit a hero worship to the man that saved her.

Curt and Mara’s wild adventure takes them from Hawaii to Washington, DC and many states in between with one harrowing thing happening to them after another. Just when you think it safe to breathe another thing happens that puts them in danger.

There is so much going on in this book but yet your never lost – you just keep turning the pages to find out what is going to happen next. This is hands down the best book I’ve read this year. I cannot wait to see what is next from this up and coming author that can write suspense like nobody’s business.

Total edge-of-your seat action with a main couple whose admiration for each other grows through their ordeal. Really, really good and I've discovered a new series to follow. For those of you who like smart, logical stories, with romance and action-suspense I really recommend this.

DNF at 25%. There was nothing in particular wrong with the story or the writing. It simply failed to engage my interest, so I decided to cut my losses and move on to the next book...

Body of Evidence was a fantastic read featuring a romance between a woman convicted of spying and the man who rescues her.

When archaeologist Mara Garrett traveled to North Korea to retrieve the remains of soldiers lost in combat, she never imagined she'd be arrested and convicted of spying. Sentenced to death by firing squad, Mara is saved at the last minute by US attorney Curt Dominick. But Curt has his own reasons for wanting Mara back on US soil, she could be the key to his case against the corrupt former Vice President who happens to be Mara's uncle. But someone doesn't want Mara to reach Washington to testify. Dodging danger every step of the way, Curt and Mara must fight the attraction building between them if they're to have any hope of surviving.

When Mara was a teenager she lost her father in a plane crash and was subsequently raised by her uncle. Mara has a very close relationship with her uncle and doesn't buy the idea that he was somehow involved in corruption of any kind. After graduating college, Mara became involved in JPAC (Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command) to search for the remains of soldiers. Mara is passionate about her work and I admired how dedicated she was to bringing the bodies of soldiers home. Curt grew up as a scholarship kid before making his way to Harvard. An incident in Curt's teens put him on the path to becoming a lawyer and I admire how much he tries to make a difference through his work.

Mara and Curt's relationship has its' challenges. Initially Mara sees him as a hero due to him rescuing her literally seconds before she was to be executed. On the other hand, Curt is the man out to jail her beloved uncle. Curt tries to tell Mara that he's not a hero but due to the circumstances they met under, she doesn't buy his protests. It doesn't take long for the pair to develop an attraction but due to the fact that anything between them could damage Curt's case, that attraction initially doesn't go anywhere. Despite the obstacles to their relationship, the pair had fantastic chemistry and I enjoyed the slow build up in their romance. Their journey across the world to get back to D.C. was suspenseful and the danger helped build the tension between the couple. Ultimately I thought the suspense plot was well done and there were several twists along the way I didn't see coming.

Overall Body of Evidence was an excellent romantic suspense and I highly recommend it. I will definitely be continuing on with the series and picking up the next book in the series, Withholding Evidence, soon.

Awesome, fantastic, fast paced, international political intrigue, hot romance-on-the-run. This book could have been ripped from the headlines in its' subject matter. Rachel Grant is a wonderful new author and is a must read for me.

Mara Garrett is an archeologist with a group that recovers the remains of American servicemen who have been left behind in war torn countries. It is noble work she has undertaken as a memorial to her grandfather who was one of those men who has not been returned from North Korea after that war. On an expedition to North Korea, on a different serviceman, Mara is separated from her group, captured, imprisoned, tried and convicted as a spy the North Korans. Sentenced to death by firing squad, she is saved by Curt Dominick, a US Attorney and media darling. On the return to Washington D.C. they encounter a plot to kill Mara and can't trust anyone. Raptor (think Blackwater) is after her and Curt must protect her, especially because she has valuable information for his case, national security and because he has fallen in love with her.

As someone who enjoys both romance and thrillers, I used to read romantic suspense, thinking it would satisfy both yens. Sadly, I drifted away from it, tired of the cliched tropes and relentless sameness. Body of Evidence satisfies everything I was yearning for in the genre. It’s fresh and sharp and moves like gangbusters.

I unabashedly loved this book. Smart, smooth writing. Real jeopardy set against a fascinating, believable political background, and the stakes keep climbing with every twist. Antagonists who aren’t frothing at the mouth, but have very concrete reasons for their actions. A satisfying slow-build burn of a love story between two intelligent people with very real reasons to distrust each other and also very real, deep attraction that goes far beyond the physical.

Seriously, if you like smart, taut suspense blended seamlessly with tangible romantic chemistry, read this book. It’s a page turner in the best sense. Highly recommended.

Body of Evidence was started off in a gripping manner, and stayed action packed throughout the story. It was a good balance of romance and suspense. I really liked the main characters, and thought the storyline was intriguing.

Mara Garrett is rescued from a North Korean firing squad by Curt Dominick, the US Attorney who is prosecuting her uncle for crimes. As they embark up on their journey to return to the U.S., it is soon clear that someone is trying to prevent Mara's safe return. As the suspense and danger build, Mara and Curt develop feelings for one another. They have to decide if they can trust one another and come out of the dangerous situation with the possibility of a future that involves the two of them together.

Mara and Curt were both great characters. I enjoyed watching their relationship develop, and I liked the chemistry between them. The bok was fast paced and kept me engrossed. I am looking forward to reading Rachel Grant's other books.

👩‍🏫Rachel Grant - Body of the evidenc🤵

👩‍🏫She’d traveled the world for her job with the Joint POW-MIA Accounting Command, conducting excavations to retrieve the remains of American servicemen who’d died in wars fought by the United States in the last century.👩‍🏫

Fun

👩‍🏫Don’t think. Don’t hope. Just walk.👩‍🏫

🤵Of all the people he could have asked for, the North Korean dictator had demanded Curt Dominick, the ambitious US attorney who was prosecuting her uncle.🤵

👩‍🏫“Thank you. For”—her voice cracked, and she cleared her throat—“for coming for me.” He wiped away another tear with the pad of his thumb, and his heart began to slow. “North Korea in the fall?” He smiled. “I wouldn’t miss it.”🤵

👩‍🏫“If you ever decide to run for public office, don’t give interviews. Your appeal drops every time you open your mouth.” He laughed. “Thanks for the tip.”🤵

🤵For the record, I warned the secretary of state I didn’t think you’d be happy to see me and weren’t likely to tell me a damn thing. But he insisted I question you anyway.”“You were wrong. When my blindfold came off and I saw your face I was…beyond happy to see you. You saved my life. I’m grateful.”👩‍🏫

🤵Whether she was a pretty twit or an alluring victim didn’t matter. She was somebody else’s problem, and after tomorrow, he’d only see her in his dreams.🤵

🤵He’d known this would be too much for her. How many hours ago had she faced the firing squad? Fourteen? Fifteen? 🤵

👩‍🏫“Is it crazy to think my clothes might have been bugged when Roddy’s killer was in my house?”“Yes, but I suppose it doesn’t hurt to be careful. I think it was my phone, but the only way to be certain is if no one tries to kill you in the next hour.” She frowned. “I don’t like your method of testing hypotheses.” He laughed. “I don’t either, sweetheart.”🤵

👩‍🏫“Jesus. Where did you get this six-pack? It’s unfair, really, that you’re brilliant, successful, and hot…” He caught her hand and pulled her snug against his body before she could take her exploration too far. “Mara. You need to stop. This isn’t appropriate.”“Today I’ve been before a firing squad and survived three attempts on my life. Screw appropriate.”🤵

👩‍🏫“Did I say aloud everything I think I did?” Still leaning on him, she felt his chuckle. “And then some.”“Keep in mind, I’m having a really, really shitty day.”“Noted and forgiven.”🤵

👩‍🏫“What day is it?” Mara suddenly asked. “Here?” Leaning against him as she was, the top of her head rested against his chest, and he enjoyed the way she fit against his side. “No, in Iceland.” He chuckled. “It’s a reasonable question. It’s Tuesday in North Korea.” He glanced at his watch. “And Tuesday in DC, but here, it’s still Monday.”“Meaning it was Monday when I woke up in North Korea, and it’s still Monday. I’m starting to wonder if this day will ever end, or if I’m trapped forever on the day of my execution.”🤵

🤵“You need advice on how to handle the archaeologist you picked up in DPRK. Now, I know a thing or two about archaeologists”—Lee’s voice softened at the reference to his fiancée—“and all I can say is good luck, buddy.”🤵

👩‍🏫She wanted to run her hands over his chest and shoulders—and vaguely remembered doing so in the water. No fair. The memory was fleeting—she deserved a do-over. She wanted to run her tongue along his pecs and then trace his beautifully defined abs with her lips. Reckless. Absolutely, horrifyingly reckless. “No, Mara,” he said into the heated silence, then escaped into the lavatory. “Chicken,” she muttered, then climbed onto the narrow bed.🤵

👩‍🏫“You’re thirty-eight and you’ve never been married? What’s wrong with you?” He sent her a playful glare. “I’m married to my work.”“Oh, I get it.” She turned back to the monitor. “Good thing I know how to update Wikipedia. Do you prefer the term ‘Gay’ or ‘Homosexual’?” He laughed. “Gay, please.”🤵

🤵He held his breath. The nose lifted. At last they were airborne. If all went well, they’d be in DC in less than twelve hours. He studied his companion, the beautiful, amazing pixie he’d picked up in North Korea, and wondered how he’d ever be able to trust someone else with her safety. The answer came with gut-wrenching clarity: he wouldn’t.🤵

Didn't quite like this one as much as the first, possibly because the characters were so naturally at odds that it didn't quite work as well for me. But still a solid read.

You can find this review in English below.

2.5 stars.

***
2.5 stars.

This is one of those cases in which less would have been more.
The story is not that bad. If you like political suspense, power struggles and insta-lust, this story fits the bill. The MC´s are interesting and the chemistry between them is good. My problem was that the author seemed unable to decide when her protagonists were going to be together and she stretched it so much in time that when it happened I was bored and tired of waiting ... and she did not know when to finish the story either. After a couple of interesting turns, another twist and another one and another made the story endless. It has become a long and tiresome read.

The positive counterpoint is that the hero here is a lawyer but is able to act as an elite soldier. Interesting. And the best has been the (sadly brief) trial scene; I love the stories of lawyers and trials.
The heroine was good too. A brave and independent woman but her behavior has been TSTL borderline. Some situations have been, no matter how much the author has tried to justify them, stupid.

It could have been a very interesting read had it not been for the beating around the bushes. Less is more.

I liked this one a lot more than I thought I would when I read the synopsis. The plot was very exciting and fast paced, and there were lots of twists and turns that I didn’t expect. Rachel Grant is a good writer and it was very engaging.

Both main characters were strong and likeable. I felt their quick attraction was believable and I liked how their relationship developed over the course of the story. I’m not usually a massive fan of things moving so quickly but I think the life-or-death angle was a good way around this. They had good chemistry and their scenes together were good and well-written. I liked Mara particularly. She was a very determined and strong character, and she coped with so many difficult things over the course of the story.

I think the only real annoyance I had was that their central conflict, relationship-wise, was based on the fact that . There’s a lack of trust between them that does work, in the context of their relationship and adds drama, but sometimes, it got a little bit repetitive. They’d be okay, they’d trust each other, and then one of them would do something/reveal something they’d been hiding and I personally felt the other would then overreact a little bit to it. Like, okay, you’re both lying and hiding things from each other. You’re both as bad as each other in that sense. So why react so angrily to it? It just got a bit annoying.

Apart from that, I thought this was a strong book with a strong mystery, so I don’t have any complaints.

I would recommend it if you like suspenseful romance novels with a lot of plot twists.

The second book in this series is just as good, maybe better than the first. WOW! Just WOW! The book opens with Mara Garrett in a North Korean prison. She's awaiting execution. And things just get more exciting from there.

Why is Mara in prison? Well, she's not really sure. Oh, she realizes she was way to close to the DMZ, but she was between a rock and a hard place. A member of her team suddenly went rogue and she knew she had to get away from him. By the time she stopped running she was at the DMZ. It was an honest mistake. Try telling that to the North Koreans, though. Now her only hope is for Curt Dominick to hightail his rear end to Korea to save her. Her cell has been unlocked, the blindfold has been put on, she is a "dead man walking." She can hear her executioners' guns being raised when all hell breaks loose.

Curt is astonished that anyone can walk with such pride and determination to their own execution. He is beyond impressed. He's not really sure why he was the one that North Korea chose to come get Mara Garrett, but he knows that no matter how impressed he is with her he can't lose sight of the fact he is prosecuting her uncle in federal court. Easy, right? Riiiight. Curt is about to be tested in ways he has never imagined.

Mara knows her uncle could never have done even half of what he's been accused of. She's sure that Curt is only using her to get information for his case. Curt can't believe Mara has so much faith in her uncle, especially after all the proof she's seen. Once the two are back on US soil their adventures begin. It seems that everywhere they turn someone is trying to kill them. Curt knows who's behind it all. Mara knows he's wrong. Well, mostly wrong. How long will it take for them to get on the same page and start working together?

What I love about this series is how Rachel Grant bases her stories on historical events. Yes, she takes some creative license, but you do learn a few things while reading. It's pure entertainment with a side of increased knowledge. I love this series!

Mara Garrett is not just any JPAC lead archeologist – she’s the niece of a former US Vice President which means she is generally kept from known unstable environments, but when something happens to the lead archeologist going to North Korea she is substituted and sent in. She is not aware that she was sent there by her ex-fiancé’s father intentionally to retrieve a piece of the crash site that would change the way the US interacts with Korea and maybe even set-off WWIII. Can Mara’s escort, the one and only Curt Dominick keep her safe? Will they reach DC before those chasing them eliminate them? Can they keep the fire between them dim before it causes them to implode? These questions and more are answered within the pages of this gripping novel.
Gripping. Suspenseful. On the Edge of Your Seat. Just some of the ways I would describe this book, from the moment I opened this wonderful piece of literature I knew it was different – like nothing I’ve read before. Being my first try at an espionage style book I was not entirely sure what I was in for, but I was pleasantly surprised. So much so I sacrificed sleep to finish this book, I just had to know what was going to happen next and see if Mara and Curt were going to be successful! The reader will be able to relate to the give and take; push and pull of Mara and Curt’s interactions and the hesitation each of them feels – personally I found myself wanting to knock their heads together and scream “Get out of your own head and just relish the quiet moments you have together.” I so wanted to tell them to throw caution to the wind – but I understand why the author did what she did!
Set aside a lot of time to read this book because you will want to know what happens and will keep this page-turner in hand! One that I highly recommended to readers of all genre’s!

This was a good story (I really liked the premise and the first half of the book!) ruined by Mara’s drastic change in character. She went from strong and confident and funny and likeable to full-on TSTL NLOG. — Oh I like to ski, but I’m a black diamond girl, hope you can keep up. / Omg I looove football! You better be taking me to my favorite team’s championship game. / I’m being such a girl worrying about this man. / The stupid, girlish part of me wondered what Curt would think when he saw me — It IS possible for a woman to be cool without shitting on other women and/or being Gone Girl Cool Girl, and it’s unfortunate not many authors (especially FEMALE authors) can find the nuance. And for the TSTL part... Trying to meet up with her friend Jeannie who betrayed her just to find out that she betrayed her again when they meet up like duh bitch what did you think was going to happen. Curt rescues her ass AGAIN from getting killed and because he said he’s taking her to a safe house she claims he is making her a prisoner and he is as bad as her North Korean captors. For fucking real??? Also, when he made her testify on the case BECAUSE SHE HAD DAMNING EVIDENCE, she punched him in the face! I have been as mad as I can possibly be at romantic partners before, but never did it cross my mind to assault them. Domestic violence is disgusting and unforgivable. I severely judge Curt for wanting to pursue a relationship with her after all that. He should have cut his losses and said good riddance!

4 Action packed Stars!!

Body of Evidence had me hooked in the very beginning! I absolutely enjoyed this book. I mean by 11% in, we had a North Korean firing squad, a murder, a plane explosion, and we were just getting started!

Mara was rescued at the last possible minute before a firing squad by Curt the man on the cover of Time magazine. But what Mara and Curt don't know is that she is only being rescued from one hell to walk into another. I don't want to give to much plot away, but I loved how many different locations were in the book and how very real (And SCARY) the plot was. It was very realistic and so many things seemed 100% real. Their is danger at every turn and the people with alot of power have a lot to lose if the truth comes out, so no one is safe.

Awesome read and highly recommended for suspense, political events, and mystery (with a side of intense attraction).

I read this out of order, and there was absolutely no problem starting the "Evidence" series with this fabulous book.

The first scene gripped me with the details of its North Korean prison setting, one of the most unusual openings I've read, and the pacing stayed fast from there. I liked all the setting choices - and really felt like I went with the characters everywhere they went.

I'm a former lawyer, and the courtroom and legal stuff was, in my opinion, extremely well done. It also didn't take over from the suspense or the romance - the legal aspects, the suspense, and the romance were blended in very good amounts.

Full disclosure: I received a copy of this from the author.

I loved this book! The mysyery was great. Lots of twists and turns that I didn't see coming. And the romance was just fabulous. I loved Curt and Mara. This was a smart taut romantic suspense.

A good read!

This is a gripping story, plenty of detail, BUT, it's obviously written by a woman! Those sex scenes. Her poor husband, so much to live up to!

Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below.

“At least you’re easy on the eyes,” she said. “This would suck completely if your face matched your personality.”

I’m having a good time relistening to some of the books from this series. I love Rachel Grant’s writing style and ability to pair a really good mystery/suspense plot with a believable romance. She writes amazing FMCs and likeable MMcs. Both the men and women are flawed and make mistakes, but (to me) never anything they can’t come back from. It all makes them feel more real.

If you enjoy suspense with conspiracies, courtroom action, falling in love while escaping danger, betrayal and secrets and more, then you’ll probably love this.

Grabs you at the first page!

Mara, the niece of a former Vice President, works as a forensic anthropologist for JPAC. She, while on a recovery mission, is captured by North Koreans and imprisoned there. Two months later she is sentenced to die by firing squad unless one individual comes to get her from NK. Curt, the US Attorney for DC, is that person. They leave NK and, en-route back to DC, run into a group of mercenaries who will do anything in their power to stop them. There is practically non-stop action, complexities aplenty in the plot, characters that grab your interest and even some steamy romance in this tale. Thanks to the author and publisher for an e-galley for an honest review.

I really enjoyed the story line in this book. When US Attorney Curt Dominick is sent to North Korea as envoy to rescue Mara Garret from a firing squad sparks fly between them. Curt wants Mara to testify in the case against her Uncle. As they are flying home they stop in Hawaii to refuel. When an attempt on their life happens they have to figure out a way to get to DC alive. This book moves at a fast clip and kept me interested until the author seemed to be more concerned with describing sex scenes between the 2 main characters. I don't mind some sex in a book but this time I felt it went way beyond what was needed.
