Can they summon the strength to strum a new song from the heartbreak of yesterday, transforming pain into a second chance at love?
In their youth, Bayleigh and Chase were more than just friends; they were a harmonious duet destined for greatness, their dreams resonating like the sweetest melodies in the warm Tennessee air. Their music was their everything, their dreams intertwined, and the future seemed bright and full of promise.
But one fateful night shattered their world and tore them apart.
Now, with her career hanging in the balance, Bayleigh must return to the small town she once fled—a place steeped in memories and secrets she thought she'd buried. As she confronts her demons and the shattered chords of her relationships, she reflects on the girl she used to be and the love she thought she'd lost.
Sarah Williams spent her childhood chasing sheep, riding horses and picking Kiwi fruit on the family orchard in rural New Zealand. After a decade travelling, Sarah moved to Queensland to raise a family and follow her passion for writing. She currently resides in Maleny on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.
This book was a journey through grief and loss, with Bayleigh returning to her hometown to face all she had run away from. I loved the storyline, however didn't keep me as captivated as it could have. Though I'll need to read book 2 after that ending!
I went into this thinking I knew what kind of story I was getting… and I was wrong.
✨ second chance romance / small town / country music / childhood connection / emotional healing
This isn’t a story you read from the outside.
It’s one you kind of… sit inside.
Because when you stop looking at it like “just a book” and start looking at it like this is their life—their choices, their mess, their way of coping—it hits differently.
The way the past keeps showing up doesn’t feel repetitive… it feels real. People don’t process things once and move on. They loop it, avoid it, relive it, carry it in ways that don’t always make sense from the outside—but make perfect sense when you’re the one living it.
And that’s what this story leans into.
Nothing about it feels forced into a neat structure just to tick boxes. The emotions aren’t there to perform… they’re there because these characters haven’t had the luxury of clean, linear healing.
And I think that’s what stood out to me the most.
This story doesn’t ask you to judge it by pacing or spice or “what usually works.” It asks you to step into their reality for a bit—and once you do, everything lands differently.
It’s not about perfection. It’s about experience.
And honestly… I don’t think I’ve read this one the same way I read others.
I went into Songbird not really knowing what to expect, especially since I’ve never been a huge fan of musician-based stories (just a personal preference). But this completely surprised me… in the best way.
The vibe reminded me a lot of Chesapeake Shores—small town, deep roots, and emotional, second-chance romance. We follow high school sweethearts with big dreams whose lives are torn apart by tragedy, sending the FMC away for 18 years. When she finally returns home, she finds the MMC still there… still in love with her, still quietly holding onto hope.
What unfolds is such a heartfelt journey of reconnecting, not just with each other, but with their past, their shared trauma, and their love of music. Watching them rediscover their friendship and first love while helping each other heal was honestly beautiful.
And can we talk about the spice level?! Because WOW—I was not expecting that. It definitely caught me off guard in the best way. And that ending?! I did NOT see it coming. I really loved Bayleigh and Chase’s story and I’m already keen to see where things go for them in the next book.
Another Kiwi author I had the pleasure of meeting at A Romantic Adventure, which always makes reading their work feel that little bit more special. Also, can we talk about this limited edition, it’s honestly so pretty.
This is a love story with so much heartache. It follows Bayleigh and Chase, who grew up with their lives and dreams completely intertwined through music, until one night changes everything. Years later, Bayleigh is forced to return home, facing all the memories that come with it.
Chase was such a standout for me, a really solid character, incredibly understanding and unbelievably sweet.
This one ends on a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to get my hands on Heartbeat Song.
After a traumatic life changing experience that cost her more than anyone would know, Bayleigh has moved on and is trying to transform the person she was and wants to be. Even after coming home, she needs to face what broke her and made her she is today.
Sarah has written a story about a girl who has to grow into her big girl boots and learn to deal with life and what is expected from her.
This book has some steamy moments that make you shiver and some moments where you can feel all the emotions of the characters that are portrayed.
If you like reading a story of becoming yourself, then this is one to read.
"Songbird" Just brilliant! Thankyou Sarah this was a special story for me. The perfect second chance country romance.
I was drawn in at the very beginning and soon knew I wouldn't put it down, a plot where a beautiful country singer escapes her tragic past but now needs to go back to her hometown for her career and in doing so also reconnects with an old flame. The chemistry between the two main characters was just so special its what made it for me.
"Music is the strongest form of Magic"
I will be telling all my family and friends to read this book.
I was instant hooked as i ended up preorder the next book in this series 🫢 This one has one of amazing heartful journey of reconnecting which was so beautiful ! That spice level was just 🥵🥵🥵. I wasnt expecting that ending.. I love Bayleigh and Chase.
Loved this book so much. So much trauma for Bayleigh to overcome and no one to lean on. She becomes a troubled country star but goes back home for a charity event and finds her first love who pulls her back together. Chase is understanding and loving to Bayleigh. Ends on a minor cliffhanger.
I have enjoyed a lot of Sarah's books in the past. I am referring to the ones set in Australia, and so I thought I would like this book too. Unfortunately it did not meet expectations and I found the explicit sex scenes to be completely unnecessary. I will not be reading any more in this series.
I was lucky enough to pick up one of the beautiful special edition copies of Songbird at the Sunshine Coast Book Festival which Sarah kindly signed for me.
The cover and spayed edges had me as did the storyline. Childhood sweethearts Chase and Bayleigh have plans for after school - music, touring and being together but one night changes them and their dreams and they are torn apart. Years later Bayleigh's career as a country music singer is faltering and she is back in her hometown to play a charity concert - she has to prove she still deserves to be in the spotlight. When she discovers Chase is still in town and playing music her attraction to him is still as strong as it was 18 years prior - does he still care for her, is he in a relationship? Will their love get a second chance?
I loved this storyline and the characters especially Chase who of course became another of my many Book Boyfriends! The story was told in both present time and the past which enabled us to understand the pain they both went through and why they parted ways. It was also told via dual point of view - through Bayleigh and Chase - each chapter labelled for the reader.
I read this book quickly as the storyline engaged me and I enjoy Sarah's writing, this one is definitely one of her spicier ones. Glad this beautiful book has a home on my bookshelf. Highly recommend it.
