Harlan Thornhill still yearns for what he did before joining the ranks of the undead: to dominate as a vampire hunter, reconcile with his girlfriend, and unravel the mystery of his parents' murder twenty years ago, the night his fate was irrevocably altered.

But achieving these goals is far from simple. Bloodlust claws at him, suspicion shadows him after his rival's disappearance, an ancestral spirit seeks to possess him, and a man with vital answers is savagely killed.

Complications escalate when Harlan, owing a favor to his killer Gabriel, is forced to compete in the Grim Games at Count Evander Eve's estate. There, he encounters new allies and fierce enemies, including the count's nephew Roderick, a knife-wielding former Bedlam inmate, and Clyde, a long-lost relative with ancient grudges. Over a blood-soaked weekend, vendettas blaze, alliances shift, and buried secrets come to light.

"Grim Games," the fourth entry in the Thornhill Vampire Chronicles, is a Gothic thrill ride through the shadowy echelons of vampire society and the haunted history of the Thornhill family. Dark, deep, and fraught with intense dilemmas, it promises an unforgettable journey.

About the author

Lucius Valiant

5 books30 followers
Lucius Valiant is a Danish-British author.

The first real book he recalls reading is Bram Stoker’s "Dracula." And that, as the saying goes, was that. There would be no turning back.

Lucius’s literary inspirations include classics of Gothic fiction, such as Mary Shelley’s "Frankenstein" and Oscar Wilde’s "The Picture of Dorian Gray," as well as horror, supernatural, and speculative fiction by writers such as Anne Rice, Poppy Z. Brite, and Stephen King. He also draws much influence from Britain’s rich history, folklore, and legends.

All of these influences shine through like glittering, dark fairy dust in his writing, which readers have described as vivid, visceral, and cinematic, with a sprinkling of wry humor.

This is a thrilling, fast-paced ride from start to finish! It dives way deeper into the darker side of the family’s history, and honestly, it’s haunting in the best way. The stakes are high, and the characters are compelling, each with their own hidden motives that add layers to the story. The world-building is rich, and the suspense never lets up. The twists hit hard, and just when you think you’ve got it figured out—bam, that cliffhanger leaves you reeling. The themes feel heavier and more intense than the previous books. But that’s what makes it so good. It’s raw, it’s dark, and it sticks with you long after you’ve turned the last page. Can’t wait for the next instalment!!

Grim Games is another incredible Thornhill Chronicles entry. The way Valiant weaves his characters and their connections together makes the world feel so lived in, and the centuries old feuds feel incredibly real!

There is lots of relationship building in this entry, with these instances between characters being portrayed perfectly - intimate moments that don't overshadow the main plot! The emotional tension in the book is high in all the right ways.

Just like previous books, this one will also keep you guessing until the very end, no predictability here! The worldbuilding again is executed flawlessly; every page feels cinematic and immersive!

Another gripping read, wonderfully and lovingly crafted by Valiant!

Grim Games (The Thornhill Vampire Chronicles book 4) by Lucius Valiant

375 Pages

Urban Fantasy

Harlan is to compete in the Grim Games at Gabriel’s request in exchange for information about his parents. He also has to assist Csilla during her game. Harlan hears many stories, some that answer questions and some that only leave more questions. But the Games aren’t the only thing Harlan has to worry about.

Oh. My. Gosh. This book was by far my favorite! Reading Grim Games has answered many questions I had leading all the way from book one but it has also left me with many more, not unlike Harlan. This book felt considerably more darker than the first three and whether that was due to the many memories recounted to Harlan or the Games, or maybe his run in with his family, you’ll have to read it to find out. I was impressed with Lucius Valiant’s ability to make you feel like you are in the story itself throughout all the books and I am, once again, giving this book five stars. Everything from the world building to the character development is amazing. The ending of this book has guaranteed that I will devour the next book as soon as it’s released! I will never not say that these books are truly a work of art because they are and I am so very glad I have read them.

I received an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Grim Games is another manipulation by Gabriel to get what he wants from Harlan.
Held at the home of Evander Eve (Another character I want to learn more about) it's a vampire status contest that Harlan may or may not survive.
He and Csilla enter to retrieve Ramsay's soul from Algernon's in-between realm so Csilla can restore her lost powers and Algernon can walk among the undead for a while. This is followed by a Hunger Games type quest to retrieve an artifact for Evander. Harlan has made new enemies during his stay and they want to exact revenge during this quest. Will Harlan survive? Will Gabriel get what he craves?

You'll have to read this to find out. Lucius Valiant is a talented world and character builder that keeps getting better as we keep learning about the Thornhill ancestors and their legacy. Is Harlan the end of the family tree? What's Gabriel Graves endgame?

What's next Lucius? Write faster we can't wait to see where these characters are going next.

Thank you for your review.

Wow what can I even say?! This series has had me so hooked from the start. Each book has gotten better. Each one ends on a cliffhanger that has had me immediately starting the next one. I cannot believe I have to wait for the next one now! Book 4 really dove into some darker themes and more chaos. It went deeper into the family and the history, gave more insight into the characters. I can’t wait to see what happens with a certain character at the end. And WHO WILL THE NEXT NARRATOR BE?! There’s so many directions the next one could go and I can’t wait to find out!

I read a lot of vampire series as every author has their own idea of what a vampire is or should be. Rich and beautiful? Old and bloodthirsty? Or in this case….immortal characters who still hold onto loyalty, grief, and regret. These characters cross over book to book, and I used the highlight feature on my kindle every few paragraphs so I could go back and check and recheck. So many characters to keep track off but none are lost on me and for an author to keep track of so many profiles book to book with no inconsistencies is stellar! ! If there’s not a book 5 I might change my mind. Anne Rice and Dracula himself would be fans of L.V. too

Another amazing book in the Thornhill Vampire Chronicles!
So far, with each book, I finish it, and I'm ready for the next one!

I love all the characters in these stories and really enjoy going through the undead life with them.

We got to meet some new characters in here while the vampire families competed in the "Grim Games". It did not disappoint!

Grim Games is the fourth book the in the Thornhill Vampire Chronicles, and it is just as entertaining, just as enthralling as the first three, but a bit darker.

While the first three books didn’t have a lot of vampiric activity in them, this one definitely has more of the blood sucking and neck biting you come to expect from vampire books, which may account for why it’s a bit darker than the previous books.

Valiant continues his lush, gothic storytelling in this book and there is quite a bit more gory conflict in it, more creepy mansions with catacombs, more new vampire characters being introduced, making it perfect for dark fantasy vampire fans.

Overall, this latest book is a perfect addition to the series, which is so enjoyable to read. I’m looking forward to see where the story heads next in book five!

Grim Games, this book is truly beautiful, fantastically written and will give you sleepless nights. Who doesn't love vampires. This is book number 4 and delves more into the characters of Harlan, The Thornhill family, Sebastian. The story is set in Victorian times and the descriptions are so real that you almost believe you are part of this story. This story has so many twists that I didn't see coming. This story is supposed to provide clarity about the death of Harlan's parents, but it is becoming increasingly complicated. But isn't that normal in a vampire society, the underlying secrets and dangers. Yes, I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the sequel. And believe me, I will soon start book 1 again. Lucius Valiant has once again managed to deliver a brilliant and beautifully written book. And the books just keep getting better and better. Highly recommended.

In Grim Games, Harlan Thornhill struggles to find his place in his new life. He is a “living” paradox - infected with vampire blood and yet a determined and ambitious vampire hunter. On a personal level, he balances on a knife’s edge. He longs for his ex-girlfriend, but does he dare to reach out, knowing the fatal consequences it could have?

Without giving too much of the plot away, the story explores deep, sincere love, forbidden relationships, hidden pregnancies, pure madness, incest, brutality, betrayal, and old grudges. Alliances shift in the blink of an eye. Who can you trust? Luckily, the story also offers glimpses of hope for forgiveness and reconciliation. What makes life truly worth living? What are your real values?

Several new characters are introduced in this fourth volume of the Thornhill Vampire Chronicles, especially the Eve family. Clyde, an old relative, also brings a refreshing and exciting new perspective on vampire life - a theme I’d love to see developed further in future books.

Once again, it’s been a pleasure to be drawn deeper into the world of vampires and the dramas and dilemmas of the Thornhill family. A dark and glittering, beautifully written novel that’s easy to read, thanks to its exquisite prose - full of sarcasm, humor, and a gift for conjuring grotesque and wild scenarios.

My five-star recommendation: dark, but with plenty of humor and hope!
