The Last Goodbye

Sometimes the pain of life brings a new beginning...

Widower Dominic Dunn isn’t sure what to think of his wife’s pre-planned trip for him a year after her death. It’s her effort to force him from his work desk to the coast and the peacefulness she’d found at the Carolina Cove Inn.

Innkeeper Ireland Cohen is a single mom with an impressionable son, and after the kid gets himself into trouble, Dominic offers to lend a hand. It’s the least he can do when Ireland was such a good friend to his wife after her diagnosis.

As the hot summer days at the beach turn into breezy evenings, Ireland and Dominic find their shared memories and friendship turning into more. They’re drawn to each other, fighting an attraction neither of them want because of their pasts.

He’s only visiting, and Ireland has a strict rule about dating tourists. But as his trip draws to a close, they both wonder—is this their last goodbye?

The Last Goodbye is the first book in a five book series set along North Carolina's beautiful Wilmington coast.

Pseudonym: Ivy James (slightly sexier stories) and Kay Stockham

Kay Lyons always wanted to be a writer, ever since the age of seven or eight when she copied the pictures out of a Charlie Brown book and rewrote the story because she didn’t like the plot.

Through the years her stories have changed but one characteristic stayed true— they were all romances. Each and every one of her manuscripts included a love story. Published in 2005 with Harlequin Enterprises, Kay’s first release was a #7 bestseller. Kay has also been a HOLT Medallion, Book Buyers Best and RITA Award nominee.

Kay's books are known for their heartfelt and emotional storytelling, focusing on themes of love, redemption, and personal growth. Her novels feature well-developed characters who navigate through life's challenges, finding love and new beginnings along the way. Set in charming small-town environments from mountains to beaches, her stories are filled with warmth, friendships, family dynamics, and a strong sense of community. Kay's writing is appreciated for its depth, relatable characters, and the emotional journeys her protagonists undergo. Her books are a blend of sweet and swoony romance that resonate with readers.

If you like slightly sexier books, check out Kay's alter-ego Ivy James. Kay currently focuses on sweet, small town contemporary romance while Ivy James' titles contain love scenes and mild language. The Last Goodbye is a perfect beach read, especially since it is actually set on the beach. This is a new to me author writing about one of my favorite places, the beaches in North Carolina. The story would be mundane if not for the excellent writing and the fantastic setting.

Dominic Dunn arrives at the hotel owned by Ireland Cohen, not sure he’s going to stay. The vacation was pre-booked by his wife, who had passed a year before. But Dominic is charmed into staying by a precocious ten year boy,Samuel, who is in desperate need of a positive male influence. When he meets Ireland, Samuel’s mother and owner of the hotel, Dominic is charmed even more, but his attraction is tainted by the fact he feels like he’s being unfaithful.

Ireland is in need of some male companionship herself. Still reeling from the fact that her ex-husband dumped her and her son for another woman, she is wary of jumping into another relationship.

Aided by advice from several women, Dominic convinces her to “practice date” him to prepare them both to jump back into the dating scene when they return to their own worlds. But can they really keep dating to “practice” when the attraction between them is so strong?

I liked all the characters. Ireland is charming and a good mother. Dominic is gentle, loving and a great role model for little Samuel. He’s not perfect, but he freely admits his faults and apologizes for them. Don’t expect hot sex-or any sex-but it is a sweet read, perfect for a day on the sand.

The characters were fully developed and the story gave enough background info to explain where each one was in their life and how they got there. I enjoyed the slow build-up to a disappointing ending. The ending was blah and felt like it was rushed. All that build-up only to end when Dominic realizes he wants Ireland in his life and it ends. This is almost a cliff hanger.

My first read by Kay Lyons filled me with sadness, a wistful kind of happiness and the deep-seated hope that good people really do get second chances at love. Nothing can break a person’s spirit like the loss of their forever love but fulfilling a promise and encountering the innocence of an abandoned child, may ultimately lead to a new beginning and a second chance at living. This is a deeply emotional story, but it flows so effortlessly that you become easily caught up in the highs and lows of this emotionally guarded couple and the understandable reluctance to open their hearts for a second time, and risk potential pain and disappointment. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more about the enchanting Cohen sisters.

The Last Good Bye

Dominic, a widower Atlantic patent attorney goes away to a beach that his deceased wife, Lisa, had reserved , a year ago from her death for him to stay for two weeks. There he is greeted by a precocious young boy, Samuel, a son of the inn’s manager, Ireland, who is a single mother… a divorcee’ whose not dated since it occurred two years prior. Ireland had gotten to know Lisa and became fast friends when she came to stay at the inn after being diagnosed with a fatal disease. Lisa had come with a friend to have a girls get a way.

This book was a wonderful read that brought lots of insight to life’s challenges, hurts, disappointments, but yet it can turn around to include accomplishments, joys and blessings!

There is no easy way to work through grief. This book shows some wonderful ways to help heal.

You have no way of knowing how you will handle the loss of a spouse. This book tells how one spouse paved the way for helping to heal the pain and to move on. I loved this book and the selfless way you can help with healing.

Loved clean romance, disliked chopped ending

Great & unusual romance by way of dead wife's request. The ending though was a little abrupt, as I'm used to epilogues..did they stay or go to Atlanta to live? I'm assuming they stayed, but was a lawyer needed there? I like details. Ha! Still a wonderful story though.

Very short and sweet romance about a man who lost his wife, and a single mom who works at the hotel he visits as a part of his wife’s wish list of things for him to do when she passes. I love how sweet and kind these two people are, and how genuine there attraction was. Very nice book!

Good

There are five sisters so five books. Good characters, nice writing style and good story. Not as schmaltzy as a hallmark movie. A little 'P.S. I Love You ' like. (Nothing against hallmark) I would read more from this author.

This is a nice story if you're looking for a summer romance. I would rate it higher for that type of story but I usually read a different genre. It was too predictable for me.

A quick short story that covered 2 weeks of time. It was the usual... hot, sexy guy meets hot, sexy girl, they fight the attraction, but in the end, they hook up.

I enjoyed this sweet and well-written story by new to me author Kay Lyons. The Last Goodbye takes place on the coastal side of North Carolina. In the summer, the area is flooded with tourists and during the off season the locals get to relax a bit.

Ireland Cohen is a single mom and an innkeeper. Her ex did quite a number on her, so she is very cautious about getting involved again. Then Dominic Dunn walks into her life and all bets are off. Dominic is a widower and has two grown children. His wife Lisa passed away about a year ago. She loved the coast and the Carolina Cove Inn. Before she died, she planned an all expense paid trip for Dominic to her favorite inn. Lisa knew he would still be grieving, and was hopeful that her friend Ireland and the ocean could bring him out of his sadness. In a very short time, Ireland and Dominic develop feelings for each other and decide to embark on a relationship.

I liked this book and all the characters in it. Ireland and her sisters are a fun bunch and they each are terrific in their own right. I enjoyed their camaraderie and the way they challenged each other. Dominic is a true romantic and his thoughtfulness was brilliant. This is the first book from the Seaside Sisters series and it can be read as a standalone.

A Sweet Romance

Dominic Dunn has been living a sad and lonely life this past year since the death of his beloved wife Lisa. He isn’t ready to move on and begin dating, but ready or not, he’s taking a vacation that Lisa planned for him before her death. She knows just how special this trip will be for him as she had stayed at the same Carolina Cove Inn with her best friend shortly after she received the diagnosis that she would succumb to cancer in less than two years. Lisa decided to schedule this trip for Dominic for one year after her death where he’d meet Ireland Cohen and her adorable son Samuel, somehow knowing that Ireland and Sammy would be good for each other. What Lisa didn’t count on was the fact that Dom decided he didn’t want to stay for the two week vacation that Lisa had planned until he sees the sadness in Sammy’s eyes and his demeanor, and knowing full well that Sammy’s mom cannot face her own loneliness since her husband has deserted her and their son for a new family that he has started. When Sammy responds to Dominic’s attention, Dom decided to stay on and complete the stay just as Lisa planned. The storyline from that point forward is predictable and a very clean, sweet romance but still very enjoyable as Ireland, Dominic and Sammy find their happy together.

Ireland, Samuel and Dominic

Dominic is only in Carolina Cove because his loving wife of 24 years made the reservation for the one year anniversary of her death. He is driving the Porsche that she had delivered a few months ago, with a note that stated it was non returnable and non refundable! It seems Lisa thought of everything, except how to get over losing her. A young boy asks him if he's going to get out of his car, that he didn't even realize he had parked. He's a great kid, who seems full of life and questions. Come to find out his name is Samuel and his mom, Ireland is the reservation clerk. Actually he finds out quite a bit while checking in, thanks to Samuel. Like Samuel has four aunts who are all named after where they were conceived, including his mom. Will Dominic stay the full two weeks as Lisa planned? Or will Sam be the distraction he needs? His mom may help also. What about the letter Ireland is supposed to give him when he checks out? Oh so much happens to help not only Dominic but also Ireland and her son! You will not want to put this story, by Kay Lyons down until the very last page!

This is the first book I’ve read by Kay Lyons and I loved her writing. I’m looking forward to reading more of her books. Widower Dominic Dunn comes to the Carolina Cove Inn a year after his wife, Lisa’s death. She left him a letter and wanted him to visit the place that brought her happiness, after her diagnosis. Ireland Cohen, single mom to Samuel, is the manager of the Inn. Samuel misses a male role model in his life, since his dad has a new family and doesn’t have time for him anymore. Dominic fills this role while he’s there. When Dominic starts to have romantic feelings towards Ireland, he feels guilty. Will he give them a chance to see where these feelings go or will he hightail it back to Atlanta and immerse himself in more work? No spoilers, so grab your copy of this new series and meet all the Cohen sisters so you can look forward to reading each of their stories too.

Ireland Cohen is helping run her parent's inn in Carolina Cove (NC). She works with some of her sisters and is struggling to control her 9ish son on her own. A year or so earlier, the inn hosted a guest who was dying of Cancer. Before her passing, she made arrangements for her husband, Dominic Dunn, to come and spend 2 weeks at the inn a year after she passed. She also left a letter for Dominic with Ireland. When Dominic arrives, it's the last surprise request of many that his wife arranged for him before her passing. He's not thrilled to be in Carolina Cove, but is amused by the antics Ireland's son gets up to and agrees to help with him some. It's not completely smoth sailing, but the trio do finally get their HEA. Clean.

This is the first book in the Seaside Sisters series by Kay Lyons. Dominic Dunn is a widower struggling with grief after the loss of his wife living along the North Carolina coast. He embarks on a trip his late wife planned for him before her passing. She hoped the peaceful retreat at Carolina Cove Inn would help him heal. At the inn, Dominic meets Ireland Cohen, a single mother with a ten-year old son Samuel. When Samuel gets into trouble, Dominic steps in to help, deepening their connection. As summer days turn into breezy evenings, their friendship begins to evolve into something more. However, Ireland has a strict rule against dating tourists, and Dominic’s stay is temporary. As his trip nears its end, they must decide whether this is truly their last goodbye. I really enjoyed this wonderful contemporary romance novel.

very fast book but really good

his wife arranged a 2 week visit at a seaside inn she stayed in for a year after her death
her husband didnt really want to go but she got him a Porsche too so he drove there expecting to leave the next day

the inn keeper is divorced with a 10yr old son. her x husband has nothing to do with his son. the boy needs a dad and the man steps in, fishing with him and teaching him ball. telling him not to get in trouble with older boys when he saw the boy was set up

they did practice dating and fell in love

right as he was leaving to go home she gave him the last letter from his wife
she hoped he would fall in love with the inn keeper, he did and they were going to have to work out how as they live far from each other

A Lovely Story......well crafter out...... and perhaps a dream come true!

A gentleman being a widower traveled to the beach, as crafted by his deceased wife. For two weeks he visits this place and his Inn is where Lisa, had stayed before her death. While there he meets and chats with others, and here to thinking about MS Ireland. She is the Owner of the Inn. Some how they share a kiss, and that is all she wrote. Romance has begun.
She also has a son. They try a practise date.....and that was all it took for them both to be hooked!

It was a lovely read and a very good start to the series.
The main leads were interesting and well developed. Their internal and external conflict was described well and really draws the reader in. The 'letter' in the last chapter had me teary eyed - wonderfully executed by the author.
The setting of a beach town was perfect. It was described so well that one could imagine it clearly.
As this a series starter, the sisters who are to lead the successive books, were introduced in this one. The author added them in just the right amount to entice you to head for the next book in the series.

Experience All the Emotions: This is a sweet story written by a superb author (Kay Lyons). I like my books spicy and this book had none and I forgot all about it and was all in for this lovely story about two wonderful people each experiencing the grief that comes with the loss of a previous relationship. The stories of their losses are very different but painful none the less. I laughed, I cried. There are puppies and kids. Amazing I'm looking forward to reading many more books by this author.

This is a beautiful book with a single mom Ireland and widower Dominic. His wife planned a trip for him a year after her death to the Carolina Inn which Ireland owns and had been a source of comfort and serenity for her after her diagnosis. Ireland is raising a teenage son who gets into a little trouble and Dominic steps in to help guide him. As they spend more time together their friendship turns to more. Now he begins to understand why he was sent on this trip.

A chance at love

Dominic is still grieving the loss of his wife Lisa and he is only here for her. But everything changes when he meets Ireland. He enjoys spending time with her & her son Samuel but is he ready for another relationship? Ireland knows that this can't be anything more as she can't do long distance but can Dominic convince her?
Is this their second chance at happiness?
A sweet read. Great characters love the sister's unique names. Samuel is a real cutie.

This story plays out a little differently than what you would expect. Both Dominic and Ireland are suffering from tragedy. Different causes but the results are similar. The characters are engaging, the story is entertaining and easy to read. It’s a quick, clean, interesting story. I did feel the end was rushed. It isn’t a cliffhanger, but there could have been more. An epilogue would have been great.
