Webmin Administrator’s Cookbook is about configuring server software with web-based software called Webmin. The book is mainly Linux oriented, but pointers for Mac and Windows users are also given. Software that we learn to configure with Webmin include:

Linux firewall
Samba shares
Apache web server
MySQL database
PostgreSQL
WordPress
Drupal
Django
Postfix mail server

The Webmin web interface seems easy to use. Much easier than the traditional administration method of editing configuration files and issuing commands from a shell. The recipes in “Webmin Administrator’s Cookbook” focus on describing the Webmin GUI. With the GUI you can administer users, start and stop services, backup and monitor logs. From time to time the author gives CLI alternatives as well. If I understood correctly Webmin is written in Perl and some GUI menus require Java for applets.

I didn’t find any errors in the cookbook not even minor ones until the very last two chapters. And those three errors were just typos. OK, I may have missed grammar errors, but those shouldn’t spoil the fun. This is an excellent book for system administrators who have to manage complex server environments.
