I was gifted a copy of this book for my honest review.

This book grabbed me in a few pages and didn't let go. It's aimed at young adult to 101 year olds.

Emily lives in a village with her mum and Grandad she has her two close friends Tash and Seth, all of a sudden life is changing for Emily.....

A new family has moved in to the local hall and they are attending the same college as Emily, lively and vibrant Violet instantly makes friends with Emily. When she meets Violets brother Theo, there's an instant attraction almost like a lightning bolt!

Theo his a troubled one, he keeps his distance - but why? Yes his perfection in every way, maybe that's why. Poor Emily doesn't know what to think. All she knows is his consuming her thoughts.

I liked Emily, she had guts but also questioned her actions even if she couldn't stop herself. Myself, just like Emily was desperate to find out the secret they were hiding and was not disappointed. I enjoyed all the twist and turns of the story and can't wait for book 2.

This book is a great read, I liked all the characters, even the not so nice ones! If I had to pick a favourite it's a toss up between Theo and Joseph, who's Joseph you say! You will have to read it to find out.

I'd recommend this book to fans of Beautiful Creatures, Twilight and Hunger Games.

I'm giving this 5 stars.

This is book 1 from The Blue Crystal Trilogy by author Pat Spence. This is her first book and I think she will go far as an author.

Emily is a 17 year old girl going to college and living with her mom and granddad. Her everyday life is normal until she meets Violet and her brother Theo and then her world is turned upside down. Theo and his family came from Egypt because life there was getting dangerous for them and their enemies were closing in. They are living with a deadly secret and will protect it at all cost.

This a true suspense/romance book I have ever read from start to finish. Though some of the spots drag a little bit once it gets going this is hard to stop and it keeps you guessing for 3/4 of the book. The characters all interact well together and Emily the main female character shows a lot of emotion in the story.

This is an excellent read for any paranormal suspense reader and it will keep you on the edge of your seat and you wont want to put it down.

Overall I liked it but for me the first half of the book was a little slow and the main character bugged me a bit. I felt like she was very overly dramatic and continuously made such bad decisions it almost hurt to read it at points.
However I did really like the paranormal twist it was definitely new and different and I also really liked the main family and their "help". Nothing is what it seems in this book! Once I actually got to the explanation of what was going on the book got really good and left me wanting to read more. I feel like now that the setup is finished this story has the potential to be awesome and I am very interested to see where it goes. It's certainly worth a read!

****4 ½- That was Nothing like I expected- Stars****
~this review may contain minor spoilers~

It was as if everything that happened was somehow pre-ordained, and I was simply playing my part in a story that was meant to be, that had started many thousands of years ago….

Well, okay then- I don't even know where to start. This book completely floored me, took me by surprise, totally unexpected-not that I really knew what to expect, but it certainly wasn't anywhere near where I thought it was going to go. I LOVE THAT!! I love when an author so completely throws me off my game with an original and unique story. And the fact that this is her debut novel is incredible to me, really fantastic work. Now, this is listed as a YA novel and where the characters are concerned, it reads that way (mainly with Emily, Tash & Seth), their 'voices' and actions come across as very very young and slightly immature -which I get, their characters are only seventeen and haven't experienced enough to make them any other way. But beyond that, I can't really classify this YA. IMO it's great for any age, the story is brilliant, the plot completely engrossing and is something all manner of people can relate to. It taps into fears, concerns, and fantasies anyone of any age can lose themselves in. And you will.

Just thinking of the possibilities, I felt a sense of excitement building within me, tinged with trepidation and anxiety. It was a delicious pain that I didn’t want to stop. I felt drawn to him, like a moth to a flame, and although a little voice inside told me to be careful, that I could get very badly burned in the process, I chose to ignore it. The attraction between us was just too great and I felt as if every moment of my life had been leading to this point.

Emily Morgan knew the minute she laid eyes on Theo de Lucis that her life would never be the same. She instantly feels a connection to him that she just can't explain, like she is meant to be near him. She doesn't trust it and instinctively knows she should probably stay away from him, but she can't. She physically has to be near him and she seems to have the same effect on him. But the more time she spends with him, the more she realizes there is a lot more to Theo and his entire family than she could possibly understand. She desperately wants to uncover their secrets and figure out this connection she shares with Theo, but the more she digs the more confused she gets, having no idea the danger she's putting herself in. And on the night of the 'Blue Moon Ball' things take an unexpected turn she is not prepared for, is scarred of, makes her question everything she has ever believed in, and puts her at an even greater risk while facing a life changing decision that she has no clue how to approach. It's a race against time and time is the one thing Emily is severely running short on.

Something unspoken had just passed between us and I knew there was no going back. Every fibre of my being needed this boy. I had never felt this way before, and was never more sure of anything in my life. He smiled at me and I knew that as long as I was with Theo I would be safe. He would never let anything happen to me.

From start to finish this book had my attention in a death grip, refusing to let go. So many questions, so many surprises, so many threats, with tons of awesome characters-It. Was. Fantastic!! But I am left with one burning question after the way it ended- When does the next book come out?! Seriously?! This really was a fabulous debut by Author Pat Spence, if this is how she enters the literature world-I CANNOT wait to see where she takes me next.

Had I known the truth I would later discover, I would have stopped there and then. But sometimes the truth is beyond your wildest imagination, and so far removed from your own sphere of existence, it is impossible to comprehend. So I blundered on, setting in motion a course of events from which there would be no return.

To say I LOVED Blue Moon is an understatement. I was spellbound from very early on in the story as the characters and mystery captivated me. The intensity is ongoing as the heartbeat keeps pounding through the supernatural mystery and horror. Blue Moon is likened to ‘Twilight’ without the vampires, and to begin with that is the feel of the story as the main character Emily Morgan first meets with Theo and Violet de Lucis. However, Blue Moon took me on a nostalgic journey as Enid Blyton was mentioned, albeit a more mature read. As Emily secretly tries to find out more about Theo and his family she puts herself in grave danger at times as she explores Hartswell Hall alone, with the risk of being caught.

The language and descriptions throughout Blue Moon are very powerful, allowing the reader to feel every sense of fear that Emily experiences. Pat Spence creates amazing atmosphere, some moments are eery and dark, whilst other scenes are touching and warm. The story was so profound that one scene in particular had me almost in tears!

Two examples of the language and the power it has over the reader are extracts from early on in the story when Emily first encounters Theo and her thoughts on meeting him:

Extract 1 (the encounter)

“Gazing into his eyes, I was lost in their intensity. It was like looking into the bluest sky and carrying on to infinity. I felt mesmerised, hypnotised and transfixed all at once.”

Extract 2 (Emily’s reaction)

“This was like nothing I had ever encountered before. It was all consuming, all-powerful and quite simply beyond my sphere of experience. Some deep inner instinct warned me it might almost be dangerous, but this simply added to his attraction and, if I’m honest, gave me the greatest thrill of all.”

The reader can relate to Emily on many levels. We all feel love, and her love for Theo is deeper than any other. She is drawn to him and has a connection that only they seem to sense, Theo even moreso. Emily is confused at times, not knowing whether to believe Theo’s story as some parts make sense but it is all too fairytale-like! Is he just a fantasist or is there meaning behind what he says?

Firstly, there is the sheer beauty of the whole of the de Lucis family. One finds it impossible to overt their gaze. And how soon do they rebuild Hartswell Hall and it’s grounds to an impeccable level? Surely that cannot be! The reader truly becomes more and more surrounded by strange happenings, incredible characters (including Dark Ones, shapeshifters and reptilia) and questions with few answers. You become absorbed into the story just as deeply as Emily is.

As the story begins to touch on the idea of eternal youth, or the alternative, that is when the secrecy and mystery begins as well as the horror. I found the horror scenes to be horrendous, hideous and more psychological than gory. They certainly encourage you to think about the ageing process and the lengths that some go to in order to retain their youthfulness.

Emily’s family and friends are the characters that keep her truly grounded and help her to feel ‘normal’. Living with her mother and grandfather provides Emily with the support she needs from a loving family who only wish the best for her. And being able to speak to her friends, Tash and Seth, allow Emily the outlet she needs by being there for her when she feels she needs to talk and seek reason. However, Theo just has this hold over her and Emily can’t let go.

I recommend Blue Moon for readers 15yrs+ due to the subject matter and horror. Readers will be as captivated and drawn to Blue Moon as I was. I cannot wait for the second instalment.

A copy of Pat Spence’s Blue Moon (The Blue Crystal Trilogy #1) was provided by Hashtag Books for the purpose of an honest and fair review.

If you took Twilight and added The Vampire Diaries then subtracted the vampires you would get Blue Moon. This is the story of a fairly ordinary sixteen year old college student in the UK who is intrigued by the wealthy new "neighbors" in town; a family that is almost unbelievably beautiful and seems to have supernatural powers. Emily feels an intense immediate connection with Theo and becomes obsessed against her better judgement. Her two best friends are sure that the de Lucis family is hiding some big secret and they couldn't be more right. Will Emily discover their secret before it's too late?

There were several times throughout this story where I felt like I was reading a spin-off of either Twilight or The Vampire Diaries, and yet this story is totally unique. I spent most of the book thinking that the de Lucis family truly were vampires or at least vampire like and was pleasantly surprised to find out what they truly are. While I felt like the character development of the de Lucis family was lacking, we only know what Emily knows, and they still remain largely a mystery to her.

Because this story is set in the UK there are many phrases and spellings that seem weird to me. There were also a significant number of typographical or grammatical errors (typically a missing word like "of" or "the"). These errors were not rampant throughout the book and didn't interfere with the story, but they did occur often enough to be noticeable, and for that I detracted one star from my rating.

Overall this was a great read though. It's unique and made me want to keep reading. I would definitely recommend it to fans of paranormal literature, especially fans of books like Twilight and The Vampire Diaries.

Emily is happy going through life at 17 years old she's at school just trying to get through her classes when did the De Lucis family moves in to the beautiful albiet delopated Manor in town she realizes right away there's just something about them and 19 year old Theo and she know she can't stay away. The attraction to him is intense and immediate but for some unknown reason he tries to stay away but the further he pushes her away the more she realizes the attraction between them is mutual and she knows that she can't live without him. she might be in but she knows that something else is going on she's determined to get to the bottom of it espically if that means being with Theo forever.

there might not be vampires in the story but the mystical element pulls you in andpulls you in and makes you want to find out what's going on right there with Emily. I love the storyline and how even though the attraction between them is so intense so fast she realizes that it's not completely normal but also knows that there's nothing she can do about it. You also get to see the story from prospective of other people and what else is really going on inside a small town they live in seeing it from all sides you get a bigger picture of what's going on without really understanding it until the very end. I love every aspect of the story and how ideas that aren't very common are mixed in with what you generally see out there creating something completely different.

Great start to a new trilogy and I cannot wait to see where it goes seeing Emily growing up so fast but also learning what she really wants in life. Very excited for the next book in the series!

I WAS GIVEN THIS BOOK FOR AN HONEST REVIEW AND THIS IS MY HONEST OPINION
WONDERFUL SERIES...CONGRATS PAT SPENCE..KEEP THEM COMING....PLEASE !!!!
This is a wonderful story about a small town , young collage students and then to some of them the world of the unreal hits them. There is Emily who lives with her mother and grandfather, who will play a center part of the story from the beginning. Her long time friends Seth and Tash who she took classes with, ate with, generally did everything with. Then one day in their tutor class they are told of a new student, and the tutor told them her classes and ask anyone sharing those classes to help show her around. Emily tells Tash, same as us , who nods, but over and hour later no new girl, they move on to English class where a little while later the new girl shows up Violet de Lucis who was unbelievably beautiful, she was told to sit by Emily, and then the kids found out she was not just beautiful but very smart. There will be jealously , young love, danger, unbelievable stories , mayor life changing decisions, secrets big and small, unexplained deaths (some from different causes). The Viyesa and Leon de Lucis have bought a rundown Victorian and change it to a fancy inn. They also have a 19 year old son Theo, his cousin Joseph and house help Aquila and Pantera. There are so many twist to the story that sometimes you wonder who the good guys are. What is real and what is something that someone just might be making up? What can you tell and what danger is really there? I can't wait to continue in the next book, True Blue book 2.

I was gifted this book for my honest review.
The book is aimed at young adults to 101 year old.

This book grabbed onto within the first few pages and kept me hooked all the way through. Although in some places I found it had an almost Twilight feel to it. There were a few similarities in Blue Moon and Twilight.

********** SPOILERS*********

17 year old Emily Morgan lives in a village with her mum and granddad. She had two best friends Tash and Seth.
When a new family moves into Hartswell Hall her world suddenly changes.

Emily meets vibrant and beautiful Violet at college and they become friends. When she meets Violet's older brother Theo there is an instant attraction between them.

She becomes almost obsessed about Theo and can't understand why he is keeping his distance from her when there was an obvious attraction between them.

Little does Emily know the family has a big secret. And just Emily, I found myself eager to find out what their secret was and was not disappointed when it was revealed.

All the characters are likeable. Even the not very nice ones.

I would recommend this book. I enjoyed it. It was a great read. Even if it brought a tear to my eye...

I was very kindly gifted a copy of this book for review.
I have to be honest, Im not into the whole 'young reader' genre and the thought of another 'sparkly vampire' story gives me a feeling of dread....but this book most certainly is not that! Nor should it be aimed at just young readers either. I think that readers of all ages will enjoy this book, if they are into the fantasy theme.
I will admit that when I was first introduced to the De Lucis family in the story, I did think that they were vampires, but I was mistaken, and pretty soon I stopped trying to second guess where the author was going, and just enjoyed the book for what it is. An entertaining, interesting and 'different' story which has been carefully though out and well written.
I will be going ahead and reading book 2. I simply cannot leave the story where this book ended and have to know more.
The lead character Emily is strong and at the same time unassuming. She is a likeable character, and you will find yourself speaking to your e reader telling her what to do next. ;)
I am impressed and would recommend this to anyone aged between 13 and 103, it doesnt hurt to have a little bit of fantasy in our lives ;)

This book grabbed my attention at page one and kept me intrigued up to the very last page. A rather unique story, not what I was expecting from the blurb but a brilliant read.

Cant wait to read on to book 2 in the series.

Blue Moon by Pat Spence

Emily Morgan is your typical 17 year old college student. She lives in Hartwell-on-the-hill with her mom and grandad, and attends Hartwell college with her best friends Tash and Seth. Just a normal life.

Until Theo and Violet arrive at Hartwell college. Now Emily's life is about to take an unexpected turn.

Theo is gorgeous with his alabaster skin and piercing blue eyes. Emily is in love.
But how does Theo feel, from the moment they shook hands and felt that electric current he knows Emily is the one he has been waiting a long time for.

This is a paranormal romance story, it's aimed at YA but I would go to say even twelve year olds would enjoy this book. It is a series and I have to admit I really enjoyed it. Now I just need book two oh and book three

4**** from me

WELL-WRITTEN SUPERNATURAL ROMANCE

Rumour has it this supernatural thriller is “like vampires, but better.” Blue Moon certainly doesn’t lack for chilling moments. Innocent bystanders and grasping starlets alike suffer when the glamorous de Lucis family open their boutique hotel in a sleepy village. Above all, Blue Moon is a teenage love story. Despite the dangers, young villager Emily falls for handsome Theo de Lucis – and her life changes forever.

Although a romance, there’s nothing sweet and soft about Blue Moon. It’s an indulgence with a hard centre, both dramatic and well-written. Of course, one would expect nothing less from Pat Spence. A professional copywriter, she’s also published other novels outside of the Blue Crystal Trilogy. Blue Moon is a great introduction to her work. Suitable for anyone above the age of 12 (hint: I'm rather older!).

As I started to ready Blue Moon by Pat Spence, I wasn't feeling the book, but I decided to keep reading because it could change. The book started off a little slow for my taste, but I am happy that I stuck with the book because I am one to throw the towel in if I don't like the first few chapters. Honestly I like the characters especially Emily! She has guts but still questions everything. She was desperate to find out what Theo was and wouldn't stop until she unraveled the truth. The book keeps the reader on their toes trying to figure out what Theo and his family are as well. I really liked that this book was different when it comes to finding out the truth behind Theo's family.

I was hooked on this story from the first few pages.
Emily Morgan is a normal 17 year old, plodding on with her life. Then she meets Violet & Theo de Lucis. They are both extremely beautiful & have a glow about them. There seems to be an extreme connection between Theo & Emily.
Emily is drawn into their glamorous & strange world.
It had me on the edge of my seat & I had to force myself to put it down to go to sleep.
The characters were extremely likeable.
Pat Spence has a great way of describing scenes, so that you really feel like you are there & experiencing events with the characters.
I am so looking forward to #2

***Won this book in a contest*** This YA paranormal is absolutely fantastic. It follows 17 year old Emily who is delving into the mystery surrounding her new boyfriend, Theo, and his too perfect family. She’s determined to uncover their secrets, but there are powerful forces that are equally determined to keep them hidden. Add in dark forces and mysterious deaths and you are in for a great story that kept me reading late into the night. I loved the vivid descriptions; they made me feel like I was inside the story. Some of the wording is different from what I’m used to since the author lives in the UK, but it’s not too distracting. I can’t wait for the next one to come out!

This is the debut novel from author Pat Spence and the first part in the now-completed Blue Crystal trilogy.

Blue Moon is highly readable and enjoyable young adult fiction, which will certainly appeal to fans of Stephanie Meyer.

There are many parallels with Twilight: a plain girl falls in love with a good-looking boy; the boy belongs to a wealthy, supernatural family; everyone in the family has a different special ability; and the family's secret existence is protected by an ancient, ruthless order.

Being compared to a multi-million dollar franchise is no bad thing, especially when there hasn't been a Twilight novel since 2008. Any Twi-Hards in search of new young adult fiction need look no further.

But there are differences too. This is a British novel for starters, which is proof that American writers don't have the monopoly on popular teen fiction.

What's more, the mysterious Theo de Lucis and his wealthy family are not vampires. This was a happy surprise and an interesting twist for this genre. The truth about their immortality is far more original. Spence invents her own mythology, rather than following the rules of a well-worn archetype, which helps Blue Moon stand out in the crowded young adult market.

The characters are well-drawn, especially the varied household of the de Lucis family. The shape-shifting servants, Aquila and Pantera, are particularly menacing and feature in some exciting action scenes. Meanwhile, Seth and Tash, the best friends of protagonist Emily, provide plenty of entertaining bickering and ensure the story stays grounded.

Blue Moon is addictive YA fiction with plenty of fresh ideas and a welcome British backdrop. As the title suggests, novels like this only come along once in a blue moon.

I decided to review this novel because I fell in love with the cover, but once I started to read it I enjoyed the concept of what was written. This is one that can be read for YA and up and will keep you entertained throughout, even though there are some spots that may have been slow but I think every novel needs it to build up the story. It had a little of everything including mystery and definitely twists because if you think you have figured it out watch out the author throws you another piece to unbalance what is going on. What I liked about the series is that this being the first it can be stand alone but is building a much bigger picture for the next one in line, which I look forward to reading. I’m not going to give you any spoilers because you can read about what it is about in the sypnosis, but I do want to tell you what I thought of the characters. While reading this I was able to sense what some of the characters where feeling which kept me wanting to read more, because a reader/book link to me means that the author has a natural talent of reeling you into her world. I have to say while I liked Emily, I think I preferred Theo better because of his passion to protect and cherish those he loves and cares for. Also I enjoyed how the author introduced to us the other paranormal creatures and what angle they may feature in future parts of the series in order to stop what the main plan is. I also thought the characters where well written and attributes. I recommend this for anyone that likes paranormal and a mystery/slight romance mixture because that’s what your going to get in this one.

I remember putting this book on my to-read shelf, but removed it soon after deciding I wouldn't like it. Her I am, reading it in the future, not liking it... Listen to the Vivien of the Past!

I really didn't like this book. It was just so irritating. There's a family that's so perfect that you want to kill yourself. The author creates this dream family that has looks of Bragelina. This is terrible. They're gonna be this flat family with weird supernatural drama-supernatural drama as displayed in Beautiful Creatures when Ethan goes to Lena's house for that Autumn Castor Party.

The writing was very posh and cutesy, but it had absolutely nothing special about it. It was just boring. The whole book was going to be about the family of Gary Stus and Mary Sues with this random human that tags along, wanting to be them, and mooning over their son. This is Twilight. This is more Twilight than Fifty Shades of Grey. The main character Emily reminded me of Jessica from The Vampire Chronicles and Theo is obviously Lestat.

Emily was so moonstruck by the family that her vision was clouded. Everything the family did was perfect. The reader can see the flaws in the family and Emily's obliviousness is saddening.

Then, there's the so-called BFF who gets jealous out of the blue.
