The boys in this series are so amazing.
This is a fast paced contemporary novel.If you've read The Trouble with Flying,you already know who Jules is and what she's done.I definitely liked Jules but I'm a bit surprised that she didn't at least tell her sisters what had happened to her.And...then we have Josh.Holy mother of macaroni,I loved Josh.Rachel Morgan writes some seriously amazing male characters.
Overall,a nice addition to the series.

I was captivated from the very first sentence “I return home under the cover of night...” I started this prequel novella late last night and could not put it down until it was finished. Luckily it was a short story otherwise I would not have slept at all last night. Note to self: don’t start one of Rachel Morgan’s books late at night!
It is so refreshing to read a well written book set in South Africa. The description of the cane fields was spot on, anyone returning home via Durban’s King Shaka International Airport can relate to that feeling of nostalgia associated with returning to our beautiful part of the world.
I am not usually a fan of short stories, often find I don’t have time to connect with the characters but this story was mesmerising, not only did I laugh out loud but also found myself crying... in a short story - that never happens!

I like Julie.
I also like Josh. The boy she left behind.
The more you read the story, the more you realize they are meant to be.
She totally has her reasons for skipping town, which you find out in the story. I think I would have done the same, to be honest.
I really love the sweet ending too. Everything I wanted and more happened!

I picked this book up because I'm scheduled to read and review The Trouble With Flying in July and this is the prequel novella to that book. I thought it would give me a taste of the author's writing style and hopefully a bit of a background for the book coming up.
I enjoyed this story. Julia has a secret that she was willing to leave everyone she loved to protect. 10 months later she returns home for her mother's surprise 50th birthday party and walks right back to the people she left behind, hurting and not understanding. It is an emotional journey and I thought the author was able to cover a lot of ground in such a short book. I felt like I had a good feel for the characters. For the most part, Julia is accepted back with open arms. Her family loves her. Forgiveness is always a good message. Loved the South Africa setting and the word differences that always make me smile. They remind me of my very British grandparents. :)
There are a couple instances of mild swearing.
I'm looking forward to reading "The Trouble with Flying" next month. The book focus's on Julia's sister, Sarah.
Oh, and I do want to know what was written on the bottom of the cast, Rachel Morgan. :)

Jules waited three-hundred-and-six days to return home in Rachel Morgan's Forgiven. This novella sped right along. Jules is a likeable character with a haunting past she wants to leave in the past, but her secrets are about to come out into the open. Her emotions felt very real to me, and I found myself holding my breath for her. I love Jules's interactions with her sisters. Their relationships were wonderfully complex and endearing. The exotic setting of Durban, South Africa adds an exotic flavor to the read. And the touch of sweet romance budding anew left this tense and emotional read on a high note. I'd highly recommend Rachel Morgan's Forgiven and am looking forward to the rest of the Trouble series.

This was just ok for me, nothing spectacular.
I don't know if it was bad editing or spelling like British people do but there was quite a bit of it. Favourite instead of favorite. Realise instead of realize. Flavour instead of flavor.
And she was calling the car trunk a boot....
Moral Note: Romance clean except No language, no violence.

It wasn't bad and it wasn't fantastic. I thought it was ok.
It was a quick read and there isn't really any romance. It's more so about Julia reconnecting with her family and ex.
I couldn't stand Amanda. Julia should have told someone what she did regardless if she used to be her best friend.

Fun fast clean read. Free download from Amazon. I have also read the first book in this series and really like this author. This is a prequel to the series and sets up the different characters that will be in the other novels.

I enjoyed this novella. It was really quick and for obvious reasons not as light hearted as the rest of the trouble series. It was a good, emotional and thought provoking novella. I really liked all the characters and relationships and it was cool to see Sarah and Sophia younger and to get to know Julia more.

My Thoughts:
I read Rachel Morgan's Creepy Hollow Series, and loved it. It was a young adult, fantasy series. When I heard about Ms. Morgan's new series, a new adult, contemporary, romance series, I was curious and excited to try it out.
Forgiven was an extremely fast paced, and suspenseful novel. It took place in Durban, South Africa. I loved the setting and learned a few new words and slang as well! This story is about a young lady named Jules, who left her life, family, and friends behind in Durban, and moved to England for 10 months. She cuts off all communication with her family and friends and leaves behind, Josh, the love of her life, without any explanation. The only one she keeps in contact with is her sister Sarah, through email, because her sister is so persistent in keeping in contact with her. Jules returns to Durban, when Sarah asks her to return for a surprise 50th birthday party for their mother. When Jules returns home, a lot has changed, and she learns that Josh is now with her ex best friend Amanda. Jules never stopped loving Josh, and he is determined to find out why she left him.
This was such a great novella. I loved the connection and love that was still between Jules and Josh even though they hadn't seen each other in ten months. My heart broke for Josh as well as Jules. I am a romantic at heart, and it was obvious to me that the two of them were meant to be together. The love they had for each other was very sweet and pure. I would have loved to see this novella developed in to a full length novel. I really loved Jules' family, especially her sister Sarah. I am really excited to see that, The Trouble with Flying, the first full length novel in the story is about Sarah. I'm also excited to see that Jules' younger sister Sophie is going to get her own story as well. Of course, I'm hoping for some overlap, and that we get more Jules and Josh in the other books in the series.

Forgiven is a suspenseful and sweet novella. It is a great start to what looks to be a promising series. I love Rachel Morgan's writing style, and am looking forward to continuing this series. As a fan of Ms. Morgan's Creepy Hollow series, I was very interested in finding out how she would write a contemporary novel series. When I found out that Ms. Morgan was writing a novella to the series, I was excited because I figured it would give me a taste of what was to come, as well as what I could expect. Well, I am happy to report that Ms. Morgan has begun yet another winning hit series. While the rest of the series will not be following the same characters, this novella gives the reader a great glimpse into what to expect with the series.
Although the novella is very short (about 80 pages), you will easily fall in love with the characters. They are all extremely likeable and relatable. You are driven to find out the exact reason why Jules left, and what secret she is keeping. Jules was an amazing lead character, one who is intelligent (and not afraid to show it), brave, and kind. Despite leaving so quickly, she works hard to restore the relationships she left broken, after realizing that she can't avoid people forever. Jules is extremely strong, as well as independent, and I liked that she decided to follow her dream. Her family was cute, and I definitely would have liked to learn more about them. Josh, Jules ex-boyfriend, was cute, swoon-worthy, and the exact guy any girl would want.
While the setting of South Africa was a definite highlight in this book, I wish I would have known prior to reading that the story was taking place in South Africa. I was confused for a good while in the book as to where we were, and kept trying to figure it out. You could narrow it down, but it is only mentioned toward the end of the novella that the characters are in South Africa. Nevertheless, I loved the uniqueness and beauty of the setting, and it gave the novella a very nice exotic feel. It was nice to read something set in a place that I had never read about before, and just from this brief introduction, makes me want to visit.
Ms. Morgan's writing is flawless, and I will definitely be checking out the rest of the series. I can't wait to see what she has in store for us in a full-length novel! I highly recommend checking this novella out so you can get a taste of what is to come and the beauty of Ms. Morgan's writing. Happy reading :)

Having already read Rachel Morgan’s Creepy Hollow series it’s suffice to say that I’m a fan, but I was still impressed by this quick read that was so very different from what I’ve read by her before. Introducing us to her new series, as a novella Forgiven is short but sweet, yet Morgan manages to pack a lot of emotion and longing into its short 80 pages.
Told through the eyes of Julia and following her return to her home town of Durban in South Africa, Forgiven is a story of love and life, as Julia returns to the town she fled from almost a year ago with no notice, no reason. Julia had it all; she was popular, she had a wonderful boyfriend and a family that loved her dearly, and yet she ran away from it for reasons unknown. Even though the story is told through Julia’s eyes, we as the reader don’t know what past event triggered Julia’s flight response, and it’s not until towards the end of the story do you learn the startling event that made her run.
Personally I liked Julia. She was nice to follow and the kind of person whom you can’t help but like. I liked Julia’s sisters Sarah and Sophie and am excited knowing they’ll be featuring in two of the Trouble books as the main characters. We only get to meet them momentarily in Forgiven, but thanks to this short novella I’m already looking forward to reading their tales.

Almost a year ago, Julia Henley ran away from her home and her family, leaving confusion and heartache in her wake. But when a family event compels her back to South Africa, Julia’s forced to face the consequences of her actions and the demons that drove her away.
A prequel to the Trouble series, Forgiven gives a fantastic introduction to the series and provides a deeper backstory and character development for the Henley family as I believe all three sisters — Julia, Sarah and Sophie — will star in their own novels/novellas before the series is finished. Two things I’m continually impressed with in Morgan’s writing is her ability to give all her characters and relationships a wonderful depth and dimension, and in a story with such a short page count (that could also be a standalone story) that’s saying something. The other thing that I’ve appreciated, and continue to appreciate, in her stories is Rachel’s ability to keep the humor flowing even when dealing with heavy issues. She’s got a fantastic skill for keeping that balance without making light of the seriousness of the topic at hand, and Rachel’s wonderful dialogue as well as her handling of the inevitable awkwardness of Julia’s return are both great at breaking up some of the tension.
Also, the romance is super sweet. And refreshingly so for a new adult novella. Sometimes you never quite know what you’re in for with a new adult romance as it really can range the gamut from clean to absolutely eye-popping, but this is a story I’d have no qualms about recommending to young adult readers.
Other things worth a mention:
- Josh…Let me just say, “Yay!”
- The setting… I love that the book is set in South Africa (Yay for a different-from-the-norm locale!), and after having read this AND the first novel in this series, The Trouble With Flying, Rachel’s got me wanting to hop on the first plane to Durban.

When I started this novel, I was very confused because my Kindle was telling me that the book was only about an hour and a half long. I was left wondering if my Kindle was screwing up. Turns out, this book is actually a novella. So this was my first time reading a novella (obviously. I mean how noob could I be?).
The book starts out with Julia returning home after running away for months. There are many mentions to the secret that she is hiding and that kind of rushes the book along which I didn't enjoy too much. I felt that the book lacked the usual structure that one finds in full novels. However I guess this must be the style of a novella.
So the book continues and it follows Julia as she reconnects with her ex-boyfriend and eventually the secret that she ran away to keep comes out. I won't spoil it for you of course but again, I felt like everything was too rushed. I felt like I hadn't had time to fully immerse myself into the world that Rachel Morgan was painting before I was rushed to the happy ending.
That said, Rachel Morgan has a unique and lovely way of writing that just draws you in. It's a pity that the book couldn't have been drawn out into a longer story because I feel like Rachel really had to potential to run with this story.
I enjoyed the book and the story and if you are looking for a quick but interesting read, I would recommend trying this book out.

If you listen very carefully, you can hear me sighing loudly. If you’ve ever been at an amusement park at least once, and I’m sure you have, there’s always that one ride that kind of bothers you. It’s that single ride that has all of those twists and turns, but ends too quickly for the thrill to actually hit you. That’s what Forgiven felt like. Forgiven follows a girl who ran away from home. But she didn’t just run away from home to a town nearby, she ran all the way to London.
I didn’t like this very much, which is surprising since I liked a different book from her that I reviewed, and it’s one of the last few prequels/novellas that I’m probably going to read. The story deals with rape and I don’t appreciate how it presented it. The whole story was based on how a rape was handled the wrong way and it left a bad taste in my mouth. In all honesty, it seemed to me that the book was mainly “romance with a dash of rape to add character.” It would take quite an author to convince me that a story that talks about rape, can be wrapped up with a cheery ending in seventy-six pages. It wasn’t quite disrespectful (from my limited point-of-view), but it didn’t accurately cover the physical and psychological effects of rape. It just left it all out...

Normally, I try to steer clear of novellas. Too many have left me feeling unsatisfied…wanting more. However, when I found out that Rachel Morgan was starting her series with a short story, I had to make an exception. I loved Ms. Morgan’s Creepy Hollow series and was curious now that she’s entering the contemporary romance arena. I was not disappointed!
Although short, this story was filled with very likeable characters and a storyline that kept me reading. Jules felt like a girl I could call a friend and her emotions were very real. She was intelligent and strong and willing to face her past even though, in reality, she didn’t want to. Her relationship with her sisters was great as well. Normally, I try to steer clear of novellas. Too many have left me feeling unsatisfied…wanting more. However, when I found out that Rachel Morgan was starting her series with a short story, I had to make an exception. I loved Ms. Morgan’s Creepy Hollow series and was curious now that she’s entering the contemporary romance arena. I was not disappointed!
Although short, this story was filled with very likeable characters and a storyline that kept me reading. Jules felt like a girl I could call a friend and her emotions were very real. She was intelligent and strong and willing to face her past even though, in reality, she didn’t want to. Her relationship with her sisters was great as well. “I can’t joke my way through an explanation for why I left. Why I stayed away for so long. Why I still don’t want to be here.” (Loc 40) So, right away, I’m intrigued.
The story kicks off to Julia’s return to her home after being away for 306 days (for some reason, that number is very specific,) but we know nothing of her trials and adventures during her time away from home. Where did she go? What did she do? And why, for heaven’s sakes, did she leave? I mean, good friends, great boyfriend, a promising future—what could be so wrong?
Of course, not everyone is glad that Julia is back—not her baby sitter, and certainly not the boy she loved. Seriously, did she think he’d wait around for her forever? If anyone deserved the truth of why Julia ran away, it was sweet, lovable Josh. Like him, you won’t be able to rest until you find out what happened on that last night.
Filled with light-hearted drama and quirky humor, this story is all about regression—reacquainting yourself with dear friends and old flames, regaining your confidence to face hidden truths, and remembering your past to discover a future. For all these characters, it’s about forgiveness.

Mini Review: Likes/Dislikes
Likes…
Clean new adult. IT IS POSSIBLE! I was starting to think otherwise. Everyone who knows me knows about my extreme dislike of the NA genre. I honestly can’t wait for the fad to be over and NA books to drop off the face of the earth. Was that too harsh? Oh well. It’s basically a genre where authors can get away with putting loads of sex, swear words, drugs and other objectionable content in what would otherwise be regular young adult books. As soon as I heard this novella being marketed as clean NA I knew it was something I HAD to read.
The main character, Julia, was easily liked and I was instantly rooting for her and Josh to make it.
I also liked the strong family presence. Even though Julia ran away with no explenation, her parents welcomed her back with open arms.

The reason Julia ran away was a bit predictable.
Since the next book in the series is about a totally different couple, I’m not sure why this was just a novella and not a full-length book. I would have liked to get to know the characters deeper.

I found this when I went on one of my many free-book-downloading-sprees. I was specifically looking for novellas as I like the quick burst of story they give to break up the day so I was eager to start making my way down my pile.
This was a short read but filled with a lot of drama. I liked that although there weren't many pages the author hid what had happened to Julia and why she had run for the majority of the story. The first chapter opened up a lot of questions and it built the intrigue well. This novella kept me turning the pages quickly and while there are certain things I would have liked developed a bit more, such as the build up between Josh and Julia (I want to know what he wrote!!!), the overall structure was good, it moved along quickly and flowed well. I might have to check out the rest of this dried when they're released.

What I Liked
I liked the fact that we didn't know for sure what had happened until closer to the end. The author did a good job of keeping that a secret, though I suspected it was something along those lines. The writing style was really easy to follow and at no point did I stop to think Oh, that's kind of wierd (as far as the writing goes). I loved the idea for the story and it was well expressed.
What I Didn't Like
The book just ended. It was as if the author was working hard to get up to the climax of the story and then she thought "Well, the readers don't need much more, they got what they came for, so let's end this." Then she summed up the rest of the story in one page and it was over. I REALLY wish she had thought out the ending better and made it last a bit longer. This was the sole purpose for the loss of that 5th star. The ending is very important, not just the climax.

This book was truly AMAZING! That word doesnt even describe it! It made me laugh, cry and get all gooey with Josh and Julia's relationship. I loved the plot and everything that happened and really think it was well written. I loved that the story was based in South Africa because it makes it easier to imagine the story. I really wish there was a stirling park though in real life. My favourite part of the story was the end! I loved that they finally got together and love Josh's character because he is so sweet and caring! Julia is just so amazing! I am sure that if that would have happened to anyone else they would not have left just to keep her best friends family together! I really loved this book and can't wait for the next one.

Nearly a year ago, Julia ran away from home and from something horrible she couldn't face. Now she's come back, and everything she's tried to avoid is crashing down upon her.
A good, clean YA romance. Though the reason why Julia ran away was simple to figure out, it wasn't about that incident. It was about her coming back home, dealing with the people and the consequences of what happened. The story would have been the same if we had known why she left at the beginning, and I think a little more satisfying because then we wouldn't have been dancing purposelessly around it.
Julia is a sympathetic protagonist and her relationships with her family powerful. It was intricate and well done. I particularly liked Josh. Sweet and understanding. He is the YA boyfriend that more stories should have.

This was a short prequel novella, The story goes with the series The Trouble Series written by Rachel Morgan.
This is the 1st book in the series, I have read it 3rd, this book is also free on Amazon.com these books can be read out of order.
What I liked about this book is it seems so real, Julia, she ran away from home, and is now coming home after being gone for three hundred and six days. She doesn't know what is going to happen when she returns home and she is scared. She doesn't know if they are going to be mad at her, she has kept in touch with her sister Sarah but she didn't tell Sarah any reason why she left home. No one knows why she left home.
I loved how the story feels, it feels real, like this could happen to anyone. I felt this was a well written short story, to tell about one of the characters in the series. This is a clean story, and I really enjoyed this story.

Being a South African and having this amazing author write a book set in Durban, South Africa gives me all the more pleasure and excitement to read this novella. Rachel has used her immensely creative imagination and has created such wonderful characters with such "real-life" personalities. The relationships and emotions the characters have with another feel so real and I know, I could really relate to the pain Julia was going through, coming back home after leaving abruptly for 10 months. I could not put this story down until I reached the very end. I highly recommend Forgiven to anyone who enjoys a good love story. I am really looking forward to the rest of the series. They're going to be a blast!

What I thought would just be another light NA romance turned out to be something completely else. I mean, it was still a romantic book and all, but it was much darker than what I was expecting.

The characters of this novel were really well written. I liked Julia's sisters as well as her very understanding parents. Josh, I don't know...wasn't that much of a fan, but I guess he'll grow on me in the next book.

A very sweet introduction to a series I look forward to reading! I applaud the author in the change in voice & tone from her fantasy series.
edit: This is my second visit to the trouble series. Yes, they're fun enough to read more than once! I'd already read the available Creepy Hollow books, when I found this introductory novella to the Trouble series. I love Rachel Morgan's writing style, and her personal values that shine through. I love a good romance, but I feel intrusive and weird if a book gets involved in the characters bedroom. No worries of that hear. These are books that I'll let/encourage my girls read, someday.
Forgiven is a quick read, and a great introduction to this series. I'd definitely recommend anything this writer publishes!

Great little novella, captivating and interesting, but I guessed right away what had happened to her to make her run.
It was cool to see a book based in South Africa and not have it being about diamonds or drug trades or something violent and bloody. I loved the happy ending and I would love to know what Josh wrote at the bottom of her cast.
I was a little pissed that there was no retribution. Amanda should have got something and so should Jack... but I guess it was all about forgiveness and I get that... but seriously... someone should have got arrested.
I'll probably read the rest of the series seeing how well this one did.
