Sloan Ricker will bow before no man—not ever again. That it's a redheaded, female captain who buys him off the auction block makes no difference; he'll do whatever he must to steal away. But when she offers him his freedom in exchange for decoding an old map, it's an opportunity to begin again. No matter how intensely he despises his luscious new keeper.
Navigating the high seas means always being on your guard—especially when one takes a temptingly handsome captive on board. Captain Joelle Quint believes Ricker when he claims to be a cartographer and, perhaps foolishly, hopes he'll be the key to unlocking her dark family secrets. She's spent years on that infernal map.
To get the answers, independence and love that they both long for, Joelle and Ricker must relinquish control to each other…or die trying. Amid a battle with the Royal Navy and a first mate's seething jealousy, Joelle also fights her growing lust. For Ricker, what begins as a chance at freedom becomes a struggle to make the beautiful, intriguing Captain Joelle Quint his mistress in more ways than one.

I don’t usually read pirate books because they seem filled with alpha males and silly pirate talk and poor hygiene. I chose this book because it had a woman pirate captain, and I was curious if that situation would be believable. I’m here to tell you that I totally bought it, from corsets to cannon balls, and I might be willing to give pirate books another chance.
Captain Joelle Quint is smart, tough, and capable. Her crew respects and obeys her, and she has a subordinate-with-benefits thing going on with her first mate. Her ship sails around the Caribbean doing jobs for folks who don’t want to get their hands dirty.
At the beginning of the book, she takes a commission to track down a mutinied ship and search for a hidden letter on-board about Spanish ship movement. Or something. Honestly, I wasn’t exactly clear on the politics of the time so I didn’t try too hard to keep track of which country was spying on which, and why. Joelle has a job to do, that’s the point. But as she walks past a slave auction, she sees a haggard yet sexy man up for auction who claims to be a map reader. She happens to have a backstory that requires the assistance of a map reader, so she swallows her moral high ground and buys a slave.
Sloan Ricker figures his new owner is a “bit of fluff,” and he plans to either charm her to win his freedom, or incite mutiny in the crew. He very quickly learns that the crew is a brotherhood in support of its captain, and that the captain herself is too smart to be tricked.
Of course there was insta-lust between them, which made me a bit uncomfortable because Joelle shouldn’t be ogling her crew members, slaves or not, and Sloan shouldn’t be thinking of any woman as someone he needs to dominate sexually. Luckily the book avoided any common pitfalls in that area, and I was pleasantly surprised with the way their relationship developed.
I can’t say enough good things about Joelle. She demonstrates authority over her crew, she’s brave but not reckless, patient in battle, and smart about cutting her losses, living to fight another day. She thinks this:
“Men…Why must they seek retribution for every wrongdoing against them?”
And this: “Rape. How original. Men. ’Twas always about popping their cork.”
And she tells Sloan, “I think it wise to reason with your head and not your cock.”
Joelle is not afraid to tell it like it is. Even when she and Sloan get a little close, she realizes that he could undermine her authority on the ship, so she lays down the law pretty quickly, causing him to get sulky. But she’s got her priorities.
Sloan isn’t so bad, either. He’s willing to change his original plans when he sees they won’t work. He’s good with the crew, and the sails. He has an excellent sword fight scene. Plus, he realizes that Joelle doesn’t need him to step forward and protect her, and also that she’s a really good captain and it’s okay if he takes orders from a woman.
Given all that, Sloan does dominate a little bit in the bedroom, but Joelle lets him know that he’s only doing it because she allows it. They have pirate sex, which includes ramming, lancing, and a “swift onslaught.” Yes, I enjoyed the naughty nautical descriptions.
I enjoyed just about everything about this book. There was a conflict near the end where I didn’t quite understand who was double-crossing whom, and I wasn’t sure if I really cared about the Spanish armada. But the shipboard scenes were detailed, the motley crew was amusing and tightly-knit, the battles were exciting without being too long, and I believed in Joelle as a tough pirate captain. Cool stuff.
Mutiny of the Heart is the fourth book in Jennifer Bray-Weber's Romancing the Pirate series. I wasn't to impressed with it. I enjoyed the overall story but the little lover's triangle between Joelle, Sloan and Valeryn kind of ruins it for me, I dislike lover's triangles. I liked the role reversal, Captain Joelle Quint and her captive Sloan Ricker. It kind of reminded me of that Geena Davis movie Cutthroat Island but with sex and Joelle is a much better pirate with a very loyal crew.
Joelle Quint has been a pirate for most of her life, and has spent all that time trying to decipher the treasure map her father left her as a child. With her not-so-sure-if-he-can-be-trusted first mate Valeryn and her loyal crew of misfits Joelle has hunted down mutineers, and earned her quite an infamous reputation of being a respectable captain. At the start of a commission to hunt down mutineers and retrieve an important document Joelle buys herself a slave, she wasn't interested at first but when she over heard her was a map reader she bought him hoping he could help her solve the mystery of the map and unravel her past as well.
Sloan Ricker was a pirate until his capture he was to hang with everyone else but his talent for detailed and accurate drawings of places was discovered and he was trained as a cartographer. He gained his freedom but then was betrayed by his captain and put back into slavery. Sloan was surprised when a fiery red-headed female captain bought him he swore he would never be a slave again. Sloan can't stop lusting after his new master the fact that he is he slave doesn't seem to bother him as much as it should. She offers him his freedom if he can solve the riddle on the map.
Sloan and Valeryn have a cold war going on over the attentions of Joelle. An enemy from the past is determined to destroy Joelle and her crew. The first part of the book was a little hard to get through then the action adventure part happens and I was at the edge of my seat. Everything romance related I didn't enjoy everything else I did.
I came across this book late one night when I was looking for something new and different. So I pretty much grabbed this on a whim not realizing it was book 4 of the Romancing the Pirate series…not that it even matters because it can totally be read as a stand alone.
What grabbed my interest? A FEMALE PIRATE CAPTAIN PURCHASING A MALE SLAVE! What’s not to love, right?
For years, Captain Joelle Quint has been trying to interpret a map left to her by her father, hoping that it will reveal long, lost family secrets. So when she comes across a handsome map maker up for sale at a slave auction, she puts in the highest bid, promising him his freedom if he helps her find the “treasure”.
Sloan Ricker’s first plan under his new master is to incite a mutiny amongst Jo’s men, but soon realizes that he will never be able to sway them. No, they all respect their captain and it isn’t long before Sloan’s interest in Jo moves far beyond just gaining his freedom…
I loved so many things about this book!
The Romance: I’m not usually a fan of love triangles and this certainly has a big one. Joelle once had a little fling with her first mate Valeryn, but Valeryn betrayed her severely. I think its possible that I may have missed some of the history between Jo and Val by not reading the previous books in the series because there were quite a few references to the ‘big deception’. So when Sloan comes along, Valeryn starts feeling threatened and won’t give up easily. Then there is the crazy sexual tension between Jo and Sloan…and the sex between them was oh-my-god-I-need-you-now intense. Yes, it is a master/slave trope, but it was more on the humorous side and nothing dark and forced. I did find myself occasionally cheering for Valeryn; I know, he really screwed up but I can’t deny that the man has heart. Fortunately, I have it on good authority that Valeryn will get his HEA soon.
The Adventure: This almost reads like an action movie, kind of like Pirates of the Caribbean without all the paranormal creepiness. A little over the top with lots of strategic twists and turns, humor and a bit graphic. Plus, Joelle is one BADASS heroine. She didn’t become captain of her own ship by being a genteel lady. There were so many oh-my-god-did-she-really-just-do-that moments. No, this was NOT predictable at all.
The Characters: So many great secondary characters here…good guys and bad. The thing about the pirate life is that a man, or woman, can be your ally one moment and then your enemy the next. I loved how I never knew who I could trust and who would be the next betrayer. I think there were some appearances of characters from the previous books in the series, so now I’m even more interested in reading more from this author.
Loved loved LOVED!
If you are looking for a fun adventure romance with jealousy, angry sex and a badass heroine…you must add this to your TBR.
Today I bring you a swashbuckling tale called Mutiny of the Heart by Jennifer Bray-Weber. Seriously, I love using that word, anyway. In this tale we find pirates. YAY! However, what the blurb doesn't tell you is there is a love-triangle. What, what, what! Do you know I detest a love-triangles? Here's why you always get a loser. Granted it's a great lead to a new story, but it's an emotional drainer. It just wreaks havoc on a person. Don't get me wrong the story is good, but it's a love-triangle.
Lets meet the key players in the story: We have Captain Joelle Quint who wants to figure this mystery her left so long ago. Some may believe it's crazy that she continues to search for it, but it's her last connection to her father.
Sloan Ricker the slave who was bought by Joelle. Yet he has a skill she needs. For exchange of helping her figure out the map she will offer him his freedom. Sounds like a good trade.
We have Valeryn who is jealous of Sloan cause he's taking Joelle's attention away from him. He's in love with Joelle, but he kind of burned sometime ago. Good job lover boy, so now he has competition. Let's not forget he's the first mate.
So, we have a lady pirate, a slave boy, and a first mate. Of course Sloan and Valeryn are two alpha males circling around each other most of the book.
Aside from the love-triangle the story is pretty good. We find a lot of action in Mutiny of the Heart, and actually it's the battles that grabbed my attention more than the love story. Then again the love-triangle issue. I just couldn't wrapped my brain with the idea with Joelle still having feelings for Valeryn after learning what he had done to her. There shouldn't have been a real choice when it came to choosing between Sloan and Valeryn. However, she still had feelings for Valeryn. Mutiny of the Heart is a good story if you love pirates and love-triangles. I love one out of the two things. Even with the love-triangle I did like the ending, and it was a feel good kind of ending.
Ricker sure is a demanding man, "take off your clothes, Joelle, or I'll rip them off." Her jaw tightened, her brow climbed at his command. "Now, Joelle." He's also a needy thing as well, "you'd better be sure, Joelle." In one swift move that even surprised Ricker, he pinned her hands on either side of her head and straddled her. "Unlike before, once you've given yourself to me, you'll be mine." Joelle she's set in her ways and won't change for anyone even a jealous man like Ricker, "I care for him, Sloan," she said. "Do not expect me to change that because I feel the same for you." But he did expect her to. He expected her to forsake Valeryn and all he ever meant to her. And that made him a selfish arsehole." When Joelle and Ricker are together the chemistry is explosive: Ricker sucked in his breath. "I want you naked." Carnal lust peered up from her lashes. "Then undress me." I loved this book and I'm hoping Valeryn gets his own because I loved him just as much as Ricker.
I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. It's not my usual reading material, but wasn't a waste of my time at all. The book was about a female pirate captain who buys a male slave that she believes can help her read a map that her father left her. Along the journey there are pirate battles, awesome sexual encounters (Joelle lets Sloan be master for a change), kidnapping, treasure hunts and love. What more could you ask for?
Immersed in action, mystery, adventure and romance, the reader is easily swept away to the Carribean in the 1770's and will be enraptured with every word.
This author just gets better and better. Always a treat to read her novels, Jennifer Bray- Weber does not disappoint with her fourth book in the Romancing the Pirate series, Mutiny of the Heart. Nice play on the love triangle theme with a believable strong heroine, this book has all the passion, action and fast paced plot twist you have come to expect when you indulge in her work!
Such great lingo, high seas action and pirate descriptions that I felt as if I'd sunk into a swashbuckling film. Surprised Disney hasn't noticed this author and her spirited female pirate captain! The love triangle was an unexpected delight, and the ultimate goal of finding 'treasure' with a map lent a sweetness to the character. Highly entertaining read!
As always, Jennifer Bray-Weber delivers an action-packed, swashbuckling, steamy-hot pirate adventure. Hot characters with enough personality to make one sweat with a simple glance. Sloan Ricker. . .*sigh* Makes me want to commandeer a ship. . .
Oh, pirates. More specifically, sexy lady captain pirate and her oddball, loveable crew. Sometimes a woman just wants a bite of candy, you know? This was silly fun, and a nice way to spend an afternoon.
