'Creepy" is the only word that fits the stories in this book: smoothly paced, terrific build up, original premises, attractively told overall - and the whole puprose is to creep the reader out. Well, they certainly did creep me out. A few words on my favorites.
"Annedale," the opening story, takes the haunted building to a new level, pushing it into a direction unlike anything I've seen before: people come there willingly and with specific purposes in mind, stay in the abandoned building though they know what's happening. Why? Read and find out. This is an atmospheric tale not to be missed. "The Bunker," terrifying and heart-breaking, really good family horror. "Pretend Play" took me completely by surprise: marriage trouble I'd never ever thought of; great ending! "A Private Exhibition" blends psychological with art horror, coming up with an idea of performance art bordering on the pathologically insane; agian, great ending! "The Workshop," a tale of Arctic horror with creature feature vibes - creepy imagery in this one! "My Eldritch Friends" is reminiscent of Charles Stross' Laundry Files series, with equally good dark humor, but a bit more oroginality; I wish this story was the prequel to a series! "The Hunt," another story reminiscent of the Stross series, but with an entirely different premise (monster-hunting) and incredible creativity in the plot. "A Better Place": Wow! Amazing story, about kids getting some sort of precognitive superpower and parents having to deal with the issues cropping up about death. A must-read for all short horror story fans.
And that's it. More than a dozen stories, almost all my favorites. I recommend the collection very highly!
Such a variety of twisted glimpses into other worlds, or rather other dimensions within our own. Be prepared to surrender hours and hours of your life because you won't be able to put it down! Each story took you into a different dark place. Definitely did not disappoint!:
Creepy, compelling, sometimes fast paced, this author knows precisely how to play on one's fears. Obviously a fan of alternate universes and lovecraftian styles, this collection is fun, and everything a sci-fi/horror junkie like myself loves.
I originally found out about this book through the podcast Creep Cast. It was a really fun thing to read and I honestly really loved reading short stories. It was nice to continuously immerse myself in different kinds of horror. I really appreciated the change of pace after the first few stories, since I felt they were all sorta around old messed up gods. Additionally, it was scary to read these stories which is definitely really important when reading horror. Some were better than others but none the less I can’t wait to read more stories from this author!
With Teeth is a horror anthology by frequent R/nosleep author Christian Wallis and the strength of his imagination is on full display here. The compendium bundles up a R/nosleep post in the form of the story Pretend Play as well as twelve other ghastly, ghoulish stories, all of which felt strikingly original. I never thought I would find myself terrified of a mobile church building but here I stand. Wallis is creative, visceral, and quite good at crafting a good horror tale of both grounded or existential origins.
There were really only one or two stories I really disliked, all the rest of them were at worst fun, at best terrific. If you like eldritch gods, dark forgotten and forbidden places of the world, creatures from other dimensions, forlorn arctic wastes, or terrors from the deep sea then I strongly recommend you check this anthology out, it's a fast, entertaining read that will stick with you. My list of favorite to least favorite stories are as follows:
The Bunker The Hunt My Eldritch Friends A Better Place The Workshop Pretend Play Annedale Zolg The Temple in the Lake The Dealer The Derelict A Private Exhibition Pompilidae
With Teeth by Christian Wallis 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Exciting and creepy collection of short horror stories!! These stories are dark and haunting! They are all very descriptive with great imagery! There’s some sci-fi/supernatural horror in some of the stories, which was entertaining. The stories are unique and I enjoyed most all of them! I listened to the audio version and although I really like the stories and they are all well written, the narrator didn’t work well for me.
Fantastic collection of short story horrors. I first heard of Christian from the Creep Cast podcast; they read a few of his stories and they were fantastic so I went looking for more.
If you're looking for fresh ideas in the format of short horror, this is it! Can't wait to see what else Christian comes up with.
A quality collection of horror short stories. Like a lot of people I picked this up because of Creep Cast. And I am glad I did. This is so cosmic horror at its finest, and some that I'm afraid didn't quite catch my attention. While there isn't a bad one in the batch I can say that some are definitely better than others. There is an all-timer here so you really should check it out.
It doesn't take long for his elegant writing stlye to draw you in for the inevitable bite. The story about Annedale in particular is a masterpiece of subtle terror, with an atmosphere that, in my opinion, rivals that of The Shining. His body of work is already a treasure trove, and I’m thrilled to see what Mr. Wallis will produce in the future.
Some of the things in here were profoundly disturbing. Some of the stories were hilarious - the eldritch gods with such prosaic normal names - that meant I spent an equal amount of time with the hair on my arms standing up while giggling things like, "Eat the incel."
Great collection of little creepypasta stories. Not all are bangers, but almost all are fun to read. Notable mentions are "I work for the government rehabilitating ancient gods " and "My husband has taken our roleplaying too far". Very excited for his new book coming out later this year.
