بعد نشر الكتاب الرائج "أفضل مئة رواية باللغة الإنجليزية"، طلبت جريدة الأوبزرفر من الكاتب والصحفي الشهير عالميًا روبرت مكروم أن يعدّ سلسلة عن الكلاسيكيات غير القصصية، والتي تستحق الاحتفاء لتكون "الأفضل على مر التاريخ".
ضم تعريف مكروم للكتب "غير القصصية" الشعر والمسرح.
ما نتج عن هذه القائمة مجموعة من الاختيارات المميزة التي نُشرت منذ وقت مبكر "إنجيل الملك جيمس" في عام 1611، وحتى "الانقراض السادس" لإليزابيث كولبرت في عام 2014.
كل مقالة ضمت تعليقًا جميلًا وضع العمل في سياقه الأدبي والتاريخي. ينتقل الكتاب بسلاسة من نوع أدبي إلى آخر: من المذكرات إلى التاريخ والشعر والسياسة والسِيَر وشؤون البيئة والدين والمسرح، وهي بعض من الموضوعات التي اشتمل عليها الكتاب.
الغرض من الكتاب أن يكون مرشدًا للتعرف على أهم الإنجازات الأدبية المميزة في اللغة الإنجليزية: الكتب التي أثرت على حياة الناس وغيرتها، وفي بعض الأحيان غيرت التاريخ كله.
نحن الآن في لحظة تغيير فيما يتعلق بتحديد المرجعية الأدبية. والآن، يقع على عاتق عاتق جيل أكثر تنوعًا من القراء أن يصيغوا مرجعية أدبية مختلفة. في مقابل كل تعبير أدبي عن فكرة (وهذه السلسة شهدت العديد من الأفكار) يوجد دومًا العديد من ردود الفعل المتفائلة والمتشائمة الممكنة، وجدل لا يتوقف ولا يقدر بثمن. ستكون هذه دومًا رحلة تضج بالحياة، تضم العديد من القراءات العظيمة.

Robert McCrum is an associate editor of the Observer. He was born and educated in Cambridge. For nearly 20 years he was editor-in-chief of the publishers Faber & Faber. He is the co-author of The Story of English (1986), and has written six novels. He was the literary editor of the Observer from 1996 to 2008, and has been a regular contributor to the Guardian since 1990

I am grateful to this book for signposting many more that I am not likely to come across and/or find time to read, but now know at least a little of.

I am a little in awe of the author that he has a knowledge of so many worthy books as to have the competence to undertake this. However, I was both pleased and disappointed to see the Bible take the number one spot. Pleased because he got it right: it is the book of books. Disappointed to find it occupies this place merely for it's contribution to our language and not it's theme, revealing to mankind how God (the only uncredited author in the list) will clear his name of disrepute and by so doing, rid the earth of all suffering and injustice as well. As too often the way when it comes to the Bible, not seeing the wood for the trees, or rather, the message for the words. Overlooked too is the fact that early translators risked their lives from powerful enemies in high church places to make the content available in the vernacular, which might have deserved a sentence or two maybe.

Intriguingly, the last book to make the cut took me right back to the list's beginning. "The Sixth Extinction" which according to author Elizabeth Kolberg, is to be ours, offers evidence in support of what the Bible book of Revelation foretold nearly 2,000 years before, that the earth would be ruined by humans. However, the former is the antithesis of the latter because whereas it would appear Kolberg, from a faithless perspective, offers little hope, the Bible's author assures those who do put faith in him that towards them he has, "thoughts of peace and not of calamity, to give you a future and a hope." I know what I prefer to read.
