Naga Brides #6

Cottonmouth

Rate this book
Ever since humans arrived, my world has changed. Tensions are high as we quarrel over territory, reforming our fractured clans.

I will have none of it. I did not capture a bride.

But then my world goes dark—and she appears.

A female so lovely she possesses my mind, a bride who blushes every time she catches my eye.

She is sweet.

She is young.

She is everything I am not.

Except nothing is as it seems. I’m no longer in the forest; I’m in a cage. I’m on a ship, far from my nest, wrapped in chains.

And the female?

She is my enemy.

Only… I’m the devious naga who does not care.

This relationship did not work for me. I needed some reason for them to like each other beyond pheromones and coercion.
The storyline is progressing steadily. Also, do the spine ripping out thing some more! It's a hoot.

Great story!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💚💜💙🩷
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: 😒🤩😀🙂
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Vivian - she works in medical technology and AI. Her boss, Ursula is a sociopath who scares everyone but Vivian’s father. She lives and works aboard a colony ship called the Dreadnought, and a Naga male from Earth has been captured and brought aboard the ship to Ursula’s lab. Vivian’s father is the supreme commander of the dreadnought and was a harsh disciplinarian. The alien’s presence has been classified; Vivian is fascinated by the alien from the start.

The Hero: Syasku - he went to sleep on the forests of Earth and woke in a cage on a spaceship. The humans know him to be easily provoked, and he refuses to cooperate with the scientists and technicians. Though they are able to use technology and put him to sleep in order to get samples of his blood and tissue. He hates Ursula and wants to kill her, actually all of them.

The Story: Studying the Naga breaks laws, but the decision was made to study him in order to try to unlock the Lurker Technology the humans need in order to fight the Kets. Vivian has been forced into a situation she doesn’t like. What they are doing is forbidden under the sovereign’s universal commandments and even her father isn’t above those laws. Vivian knows that what they are doing is unethical. Though she ways it agains the millions that will die at the hands of the Kets.

I liked the previous books in this series quite a bit, though this one was a pretty big departure from the other books, that all took place on future Earth where the Naga are the dominant species. I tend to read a lot of stories where the main characters are treated poorly, and I hate them, but love them. I like it when the characters overcome their adversary and win out in the end, but I hate the fact that sentient beings are treated as lab rats, and mistreated or tortured. I knew this one was going to be like that from the start. Vivian wanted to have morals and fight for what is right, but she is too scared.

There was a lot of action in this one and it was super steamy, like the rest of this series. I have said it before, but I don’t like how these stories seem to focus on the Hero’s “seed”. It gets everywhere and he is always dripping it and it really bothers me, because it just isn’t sexy, romantic or anything like that. It is just icky to me. I did like the story quite a bit though, especially when they escape captivity, since they are still on the colony ship which is so big it carries over a million people.

The ethical dilemma at the heart of the story sounds intense, especially with Vivian struggling between morality and necessity. It makes for such a compelling conflict when a character knows something is wrong but feels powerless against forces larger than themselves. The shift from future Earth to a colony ship is a pretty big departure, and I can see how that change in setting adds layers to the story—especially when it comes to the secrecy surrounding Syasku.

This audiobook was told in multiple perspectives, done in dual narration and was narrated by John Masterson and Willa James. John Masterson has a super deep voice which I really like for the Naga males, and he speaks in a slow, measured way that just makes them sound more authentic for some reason. This was my first time listening to Willa James and she has a great voice. I really enjoyed the narration.

This was a dark AF latest installment in this universe and I enjoyed it. I was a lil unsure about Vivian initially, but she grew on me pretty fast, especially when I learned more of her background. Syasku was understandably violent and angry, but to no one’s surprise, got a soft spot for his woman. I enjoyed the intense setting on the spaceship and the way they became each others’ first gentle touches. There is one thing I’m reaaaalllllyyyy upset about, but I can’t say it without spoiling.

Spice: 4.5/5

Triggers: violence, gun violence, gore, torture (including electrocution and skinning), SA, murder, involuntary medical experimentation, pregnancy, childbirth, discussion of child abuse, domestic violence, captivity, dubcon, dehydration, starvation, extreme poverty (involving non main characters), severe illness/injury, grief

Check out my latest video where I share my thoughts on this read, Mo's Unapologetic Reads, Let's Catch Up | September 2024.

The Naga Brides series is a series I look forward to reading. So far it's been pretty good. The overall plot of the series is really interesting with very diverse characters in terms of their personalities and of course species. I am a fan of alien romances and look forward to reading how an author is able to craft the love stories of it's characters that have almost nothing in common.

With that said, I was super excited to read Cottonmouth. It couldn't come out soon enough. I'm glad Lucas had the story take place in a new setting and this created a new environment for the characters to operate in. I like Syasku, he held his own, determined not to be placated and subdued. I looked forward to reading his POVs. He was determined to not only keep his mate safe, but follow through on all of his promises.

Ursala was definitely a problem and it's unfortunate the way things ended for Asera.

Overall, this ended up being a 3 star read for me. There was something about the details of the scenes that seemed a bit lacking. I found myself sometimes not being able to really understand the spaces they were in or how the characters were "moving" throughout those spaces. Also, one of my disappointments was in the description of Sysaku. His coloring was kind of off putting.

Anyway, I definitely intend to finish this series. It will be interesting to see how the Naga community will respond and adjust to the influx of humans coming from the Dreadnaught. How will this area accommodate the possibly hundreds of people landing? Will there be enough resources for them and the Nagas to share? Will they be able to defeat the Ketts? Are the Lukers still around somewhere? And what other interesting pairings will occur?

Can't wait to find out!

Sigh, having read all the previous books, I anxiously waited for this books release and was so happy to see that it finally was released. My happiness was short lived. ***Possible Spoilers*** The majority of this book is concentrated on torturing and imprisoning the male naga with a majority of the torturing being unnecessary , There was not much of a storyline and our female lead Vivian was one of the weakest females I have read about in a long time. I was very disappointed in this book, I found it the worst in the series with characters being evil just for the sake of being evil although I love a good villain but I think there should be some kind of reasoning for their villainous behavior .The nagas color in the book is not the color of the naga on the cover with the nagas color being described as silver in the book and not the book covers turquoise.

This book should not have been written. I forced myself to read this as I’ve waited so long for it to be released. So disappointed in the plot, the characters, the romance… dry, dry, dry.
And now there’s a third arc coming 😭 I cannot force myself through another.

Watch out everyone, there are snakes in space, and no one knows what to do!

This book started out right after we saw Syasku get captured by a ship, and taken back to space. The transport and subsequent hiding him away for "research" do not go well. Vivian is a Yuellen (and also Laura's daughter), so she is on a medical team, but she is on THE medical team that gets to study Syasku. From the moment he saw her, he wanted her. But getting her was not easy.

I really loved this book the most out of all of them so far! The relationship between Syasku and Vivian starts out similarly, yet so different from all the others. I was honestly worried that they wouldn't have a HEA for a little while, or what it would look like for them. But without spoiling anything, it was probably my favorite HEA so far. I can't wait to read the next one!

With the way this book started off, and the situation Vivian was in, did not bode well to make her a very likeable character. Thankfully I was wrong and I grew to like this book as much as the others. Syasku was a good character, very patient with Vivian and forgiving, even though he did not believe there was anything to forgive.

By the end of this book, it's beginning to look like some of the Naga's of different clans will form a small community out of necessity, if they keep losing their territory as

It gets mentioned towards the end of the book that a space view of Earth shows that the area where the Naga's live, the mountainous, forested/watery area, appears to be the only inhabitable part of earth, at least on that side of the planet. There is nothing but sand and never ending dessert outside this area and this is where the females of the clans supposedly headed. I really hope we eventually see some females, I'd hate to think they all left the forested area to only die in the desert because they didn't know what they were getting into.

Syasku was captured by asshole human soldiers and taken aboard The Dreadnaut where he was drugged, tortured, and tested on.

Amongst the testing team is Vivian. Who knows that what they’re doing is wrong, who doesn’t want to hurt him, who tries to numb his pain whenever she can. But she’s also the Supreme Commander’s daughter and has little choice in the matter.

But obvs his pheromones affect her, and obvs she’s the only one he wants…so why wouldn’t the despicable people in charge use her to cow him?

Wow there were some horrifying characters in this. I mean Pierce and Volp were vile but Ursula? She was beyond disgusting. In so many ways.

There is one character that she used (trying to be vague because spoilers) whom I just felt so so sorry for. They did not truly deserve anything that happened, having drawn the short straw at life.

I liked that Vivian and Syasku’s relationship was a slow build, even though pheromones were rife. They managed to resist each other for as long as possible given the dire situation they were in.

One question though - what was the deal with the cut on her chin? It’s mentioned several times but I don’t remember anything really coming of it. I know it was caused by Syasku during their meet-not-at-all-cute…but the fever? The purpose of it being something referred to semi-frequently? What did I miss?

We’re getting to the nitty gritty of the overall series plot now, and I’m curious to see how it’ll all play out.

Warning: This book is BLEAK AF.

Torture, on-page side character deaths.

I didn’t have an issue with Vivian. She was weak because of how she grew up. If you work outside your home, imagine your HR department raising you since birth. Your HR director is your father.

Syasku’s character was amazing. The strongest (emotionally) mmc to the weakest (emotionally) fmc.

BUT……

I need to address Asera’s demise. 🥃 💃🏼🦊

Whyyyy? He wasn’t doing anything to Vivian. I guess he tried to stop Syasku from hurting Ursula, but that was him killing his adopted son basically. No pulled punches.

I had a feeling Asera wasn’t going to survive. Poor guy just wanted a mate, and not be harassed for his handicap. Nature is brutal and so are the Nagas.

I don’t know, couldn’t it have been Asera waking up finally, and killing Ursula and himself in a dramatic murder-suicide? Shunting them both out of an airlock? Because yes if Ursula dies, he has to die too. His nature being what it is. I understand that. But not how it went down!!! :(

This book is depressing. I’m surprised I read all of it, but I wanted to see how things would work out for Vivian and Laura more than anything. How THAT meetup was going to go. It was handled well.

And Omari’s character is interesting and I hope we get her as a fmc in the future.

2 Stars - It was ok.

While I love this series, the last third of this book just wasn’t for me. I’m fine with graphic descriptions of giving birth, but I cannot imagine a world in which a woman is so torn open she needs stitches that she would then (days later) be fine with being boinked so hard she bruises (not to mention the size of him). Just…how??? No way is that comfortable, let alone pleasurable. She’s a new mom, hiking miles daily in constant danger and with open wounds that can get infected!!! I cannot imagine feeling arousal with all that happening.

I get that we need to suspend disbelief in a romance novel. But not with this. Also, I know that breastfeeding is a kink for some, but it’s not mine.

The last third was just a huge miss for me. The first 2/3rds don’t feature a ton of romance either - it’s more of a hardcore sci fi story. Great world-building, but this just wasn’t the book for me.

2.75-3 ⭐️

This is my least favorite in the series so far.

I liked the science lab forced proximity, but the relationship felt too dry & clinical.

The fmc has to be one of the blandest characters I’ve ever come across. I liked how Vivian was just as lonely as Syaksu, but she’s excessively meek with immature daddy issues. What annoyed me more was that the only bit of personality the author gave her came from being forced into motherhood.

Ursula & the way Syaksu was manhandled was disgusting. Even after scientific rationales were given, it still felt mostly unnecessary.

The change in setting & naga smut were pretty much what held my interest, & now since reading this one, I’m finding myself less invested in the series.

Read the trigger warnings and take them seriously. This book has on-page torture.

With that being said, I love this series, it was great to see additional characters get the spotlight and ultimately see what the human on the Dreadnaught were dealing with.

This book really progressed the overarching story a lot!!

My only gripe was the endless scenes of the two main characters in a captive room. It was daunting. Like a slog daunting, but it made you feel the hopelessness the characters felt.

Can’t wait for the next book!!

Enjoy!

4/5 (Slow in the beginning, explicit scenes after the first few 100 pages)

I have been waiting a long time for this book to come out! I was so excited to see the next part of the Naga series and I can say this book did not disappoint. Just like previous books on the series, I was excited to see what would happen to the captured Naga. As opposed to previous FMC, I think the FMC in this book was a bit forgettable compared to previous books. Her only saying grave was her kindness towards the Naga, yet didn't do much besides that. I wish there was more the FMC could offer to the book. Overall, I think this book was good. If you're a fan of monster romance, I highly recommend you read this series!

I appreciated that the author switched things up a bit. This book has a very different setting - the ship, rather than the planet - and different power dynamics. Its also much, much darker. There is literally torture, captivity, sexual assault/rape. There's military coups, class subjugation, and an immense amount of bloodshed. There's forced pregnancy, slavery, and colonialization. There's a very different vibe to this book, and I don't think its entirely a good thing. Please make sure you read all the TW/Tropes at the start of the book before picking this one up.

I definitely think this is one of the weaker books, largely because:
*There is a significant amount of repetition
*The pacing grinds to a halt in the last 30% or so.
*Laura:
*There's big Star Wars Sequel/Prequel issues going on.

I have a growing suspicion that either the author re-skinned wolf/omegaverse fic into this, or has written extensive wolf fic and didn't study snakes or reptiles much before doing this. This is because the naga have far, far more wolf features than snake/reptile ones. Oh, look, the snakemen have one weiner like a wolf, not two like many snakes. Look, they have a knot like a dog weiner. They 'drool' venom - canines drool, but reptiles do not, and certainly not their venom. Scales are described as hackling like wolf fur (snakes don't do that) and prune like skin. Verbs that either don't match the fact that they don't have legs (e.g., running) or physical capabilities of their snake form (jumping) but are perfectly fine if we were talking about wolf men. Purely warm-blooded physiology, like a wolf. The list goes on. I'm not saying its a problem or a bad thing (other than inaccuracies about reptile biology taking me out of the story sometimes), but its...weird.

P.S. No, saying there is lurker DNA doesn't excuse it or explain it.

(a) these books have almost as much, if not more, volume of jizz as the orc sworn books. (b) it is wild that the mmc tried to "mate" fmc's estranged mother in a previous book. and yes, this is something they have a conversation about. (c) I think this is the first Naomi Lucas I've read (or at least the first naga brides) where the fmc has pubes. (d) there is a character named muffin, and it's played completely straight. (e) yandere snake man is a one-man (snake?) army. (f) this just has so much bodily fluids in general. (g) building on that, there's also some lactation kink. ok.

I REALLY wanted to love this but this was by far my LEAST FAVORITE of the series. Vivian is the worst!!

PLOT:

Syasku the naga is kidnapped and taken to a research wing onboard a spaceship. He's held and tortured for research where he meets one of his captors, Vivian. Drawn to each other Vivian has to decide where her loyalties lie and if they have a future together.

THOUGHTS:

- I'm going to come right out and say it. I HATED Vivian. She was the weakest, smallest most snivelling, spineless heroine we've had so far. She had NO backbone and actively tortures Syasku because she's told to but it's ok because she feels bad. She has no personality aside from being weak willed and scared and without the pheromones there's NO WAY this relationship works.

- Syasku was ok, I liked his personality and spirit and wished we got more of that when he wasn't being tortured. He's a good guy I guess because he forgave Vivian right away even though she actively hurt him / contributed to his almost death. WAYYY to easily forgave in my opinion.

- I hated the plot. At first I was so excited to see how things go in a new environment but It was a huge letdown. Like 50% of the novel is Syasku being horribly tortured and the other half is slow story and Vivian fretting and wringing her hands.

- WHERE IS THE ROMANCE?!? I really wanted to see them fight to be together and learn to overcome barriers and get closer. What I got was Vivian being an idiot, them betting thrown together and succumbing to the pheromones and BOOM, pregnancy and birth. Like there was no bonding, learning about each other etc. just Vivian being horned up due to the pheromones, they sleep together and she's pregnant and gives birth right away.

- Ursala was DISGUSTING and I'm still sad that poor dumb Asera was cought up in the end. Ugh.

- smut was ok but we didn't get enough IMO, especially with how depressing and dark everything was. I read these books for romance and spice, not depression and flayed hides.

- the whole last half of the book was a drag. Also, do u know whats not hot? Depictions of a birth so bad she tears and needs stitches but is apparently ready to go and fuck hard like 10 mins later?!? (I know it's supposed to be like a month after) But that not how things work and was superrrr unsexy to me.

Lastly - THE COVER?! Syasku is described as being ashy grey in color, so why is the cover green? He's never described as having any green (more dark patches and bone color maybe?) so the lack of cohesion drives me nuts.

Characters: Vivian and Syasku

Content Warning: torture, forced ejaculation, drugged, chained up, painful experiments, starvation

Vivian is aboard the Dreadnaut when a snake hybrid is brought in so they can perform tests on him. Vivian is apart of the group that is asking the creature questions. Syasku manages to get free and he bites Vivian on the neck. Shortly after that, she starts to feel things and the more she is around this creature, the more intrigued she is, but she also is very scared of this creature.

Syasku tries to obtain a mate in the last book (Boomslang), but before he could do that he is captured by humans and put on a ship, and from there he is caged up, tortured, experimented on, drugged and in chains. He is intrigued with the human woman who asks him questions, her scent is similar to the human woman he tried to obtain on earth. The more he is around Vivian, the more his pheromones start to work on Vivian, and her arousal is something that he can smell on her, so he starts to get aroused as well.

Vivian’s father is Captain Volp and he tells Ursula (the woman experimenting on Syasku) to give Vivian another job, so Vivian ends up getting put on a job for a month, meanwhile her arousal gets worse, and the only way it calms down is if she finally mates with Syasku (but she doesn’t know that at the time). She steals the key card from Ursula’s secretary and gets in to see Syasku. Ursula decides to lock Vivian in with Syasku, and Vivian and Syasku mate (rutting).

There are some tensions below with the other human citizens that don’t want to be on the ship anymore and they want to be on earth, since they heard that the planet is habitable again. So the citizens start messing with the lights and other things that help run the ship (they run the core).

Ursula takes Syasku from his nest he created for Vivian (inside his prison), and when he goes into a room he sees Asera, another naga who Syasku rescued years ago and took care of. Asera deliberately got captured, because he knew he couldn’t survive on his own. He makes a deal with Ursula, that he will stay and be tested and experimented on, and Syasku would be set free. Syasku wants Vivian, but they try to keep him from her. He manages to escape (with the help of Asera) and kills the military commander. When Syasku gets to an elevator with Muffin (a medical researcher working with Ursula), he gets electrocuted by Ursula.

So secretly Muffin decides to help Syasku recover (there is an area on the ship that the upper residents and workers don’t go there). It takes two months for Syasku to recover (with the help from their medical technology and Kyle).

Meanwhile Vivian has been trapped in the Captain’s residence, being guarded by a Nurse named Lena. Her father tells her that Syasku is dead. She’s pregnant with Syasku’s child and her pregnancy is progressing very quickly, because of the Naga DNA. Vivian manages to escape and asks for help from Ursula. She helps Vivian and brings her back to her room where Ursula and Asera have clearly been mating. Vivian tries to warn Asera that Ursula isn’t a good woman and she is just using him. Then all hell breaks loose and the ship lights go off, fighting breaks out, Vivian goes into labor. Asera tries to help her, finally Syasku shows up and he and Ursula help Vivian deliver their child. Some deaths happen after this (I don’t want to give away too much 😬). Vivian, Syasku, Kyle, Muffin, and others make it on a ship and escape the Dreadnaut.

They all land on earth, but after how many days they look up at the sky and see that the Dreadnaut ship explodes, how many other ships arrive on earth, so Syasku and the other naga’s and their mates all hide underground.

My thoughts:
This installment of the series was darker in tone to the other novels, this took place mostly on the Dreadnaut, this was also slow paced, and there are a couple of short time jumps where the hero and heroine aren’t with each other. Also there are A LOT of deaths in this book, Syasku kills a lot of humans. This is the type of series where if you don’t start at the beginning, then you will be lost. There is a TON of world building in here and I am predicting that there is going to be a huge war on earth between Naga’s and other humans in future books. I really enjoyed this one, I do feel like Naomi Lucas is finding her stride in these latest installments to this series, the beginner books I wasn’t a huge fan of the romances, but the last two (Boomslang and this novel) I felt like the heroes weren’t as crazy possessive and dominant as the other heroes previously.

Glossery:
Lurkers: an alien race that came to Earth with the lie that they wanted to help with our technology, but ultimately ruined the planet and killed a lot of humans.

Genesis-8: a technology in the bodies of naga’s (hybrid snake creatures), it alters naga and human DNA, and why the humans on the Dreadnaut want it.

Yulen Research: medical science and technology that has been used by the Yulen family for generations. Laura Yulen is the mother of Vivian and other children. In the last book we find out that Laura Yulen’s fetal eggs were taken from her by the Captain, so he can use his sperm to inseminate the eggs and then his family lineage can be connected to the Yulen line. (The man is a very cold man, not caring one bit about his children), he only cares about the medical research.

Muffin: a man who has been working with the other medical staff, and has been helping Vivian. He helps Syasku after Ursula shocks him with electricity brought on by a neck brace he has around his neck.
Muffin discovers Kyle (who knows another naga), Kyle is related to Vivian.

The Sovereign: people who basically run the universe and the Captains superiors.

The Ketts: humans? Trying to destroy the Sovereign and others apart of the Sovereign

Omari: the leader of the humans who run the core of the ship, that keeps all the electrical and tech running.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Plot: 4/5
Characters: 3/5
Spice: 🌶️🌶️

Cottonmouth follows our FMC, Vivian, who is assigned the unenviable task of assisting in the torture of our very much not-human MMC, the Cottonmouth Naga, Syasku. Vivian took a while to grow on me - she starts off quite passive and fearful, which can get frustrating (especially when the MMC is literally being tortured right in front of her). But as the story unfolds and we learn more about her past trauma, I found myself softening to her and understanding her reactions more.

This book gives you space battles, spine-ripping action, and one very determined snake man with a capital “S.” It’s brutal, weirdly romantic, and full of that distinct monster-romance energy - equal parts disturbing and addictive.

I burned through this book in a day. It was a good read and full of tension that kept me reading and saying 'just one more chapter'. I had been looking forward the Cottonmouths story, worried for him since he was captured in the last book. In relation to the past books this one was definitely darker in terms of the themes and situations the characters found themselves in.

Syasku, poor dear, didn't deserve what he went through. His tenacity and strength was endearing. It was interesting to see that once he'd chosen Vivian, and they had unintentionally exchanged pheromones, he refused all other women. I've been mentally calling this Genesis 8/pheromone virus thing "scientifically explained fated mates", and this book sort of reinforced that idea. It was a little predictable that Syasku ended up reacting/talking to Vivian, which eventually/expectedly lead to her being tossed in the cell with him, and then that led to him 'giving in' to Ursula in order to take care of Vivian as best as he could. Still, even though it was predictable it was interesting to read how it played out. I was worried about Syasku through most of the book, genuinely stressed out for him and what he was going through.

Vivian wasn't exactly what I expected. I'm not sure why, but I just wasn't that interested in her character; though that's purely my opinion and not any shade on the character herself. She was clearly a product of her environment and the evil people that raised her, however her naivety and innocence was annoying at times.

Asera... Not sure how to feel about him. Frustrated. Annoyed. I wanted to grab him by the shoulders and shake him while shouting about how much of a naive idiot he was being.

Muffin and Kyle. Adorable. Found their characters to be very StarWars Rebel-ish, which was nice and fit well with what was going on in this book. I'm very glad that Kyle stuck with Vivian and Syasku.

Now. Ursula. When I say I hated this woman. I hated her, which really spoke to how well written she was. The level of frustration and hate I had for her character is right up there with Delores Umbridge from Harry Potter. This woman, ooohhh, I prayed and prayed for Syasku to kill her. The character was perfect for the needs of the story and was a fantastic villain.

Omari and her group reminded me of Moldaver from Fallout, in a good way.

I was actually worried the further I got in the book that we wouldn't be getting back to Earth in this one. However, when it finally happened, I breathed a sigh of relief and then started mentally urging the characters to hurry up and connect with the others from previous books. When they came upon Zaku, all I could think was how poor Zaku was probably groaning like 'please, not mooorrrreee people'. Lol. I was so happy when Syasku and Vivian finally reached where Azsote and the others were. The obvious friendship between Syasku and Azsote was so cute, I loved it. Laura and Vivian connecting and bonding was sweet. The Dreadnaught blowing up was sort of expected. Unfortunately, now there is a mass of humans on Earth, in the Naga's valley, and I'm not excited about that. I'm worried. Hopefully, the humans will find a place away from the Naga's land. Go to the wastes, for all I care, but I hate the thought of the Naga's being forced from their homes and unable to return to their nests or for the nests to be destroyed/ransacked, like Azsote and Syasku and Krellix.

With this book finished, I feel like I'm coming up for air from getting lost under waves of another world. And I'm not sure what to do now. I'm not ready to be done with this world. Currently, this is the last of the series out, but I am excitedly and anxiously waiting for the next in this series.

No digas mamadas!!!!

Okay.

Book 6 in the Naga Brides series

Frist of all, I have to say that this is probably one of (if not the most) beautiful cover that this series has so far. I was SO looking forward to reading it (as I do all the books in this series). I love a good captive romance and was really looking forward to see how Ms. Lucas was going to make having the MMC being the one who was captured work for me. Unfortunately, I didn't like either of the main characters and found the plot really weak. This is just my opinion. I hated that I didn't love this book more.

In this installment we get to see the story of Syasku (naga Cottonmouth) and Vivian (the daughter of Laura from the previous book). Syasku is captured at the beginning of the previous book, so here we get what was happening to him. Vivian Yulen is a Yulen of Yulen Medical Technologies, who closely guard their medical information and secrets, which are only known to family members.

Vivian works for Ursula, the head of the medical department in the large spacecraft called The Dreadnaut. Vivian's dad is the High Commander, who everyone is afraid of. Not only that, he was a terrible father and would punish Vivian every chance he got- usually with isolation- which is a form of @buse. Just was a trigger warning near the end of the book he becomes physically @busive towards her. And I so wanted to like Vivian, but she wouldn't stand up to anyone- not Ursula nor her dad- even when Syasku was being ruthlessly t0rtured. And Syasku didn't even seem to try to think of ways he might escape. Although, eventually he only cared about having Vivian.

Okay, so the characters and the plot didn't do anything for me. And I stared to wonder why that was. Upon reflection I felt that the romance was secondary to the plot. Vivian and Syasku are hardly together at all during the book. The only time they were together for a substantial amount was when Syasku demanded Vivian be caged in with him before he would offer any information about himself/nagas/Earth. So, when the pair was finally able to be together it was through coercion/manipulation and "f0rced" pheromone inhalation (even though Vivan was already attracted to Syasku, it felt like she didn't have any choices).

I will still be continuing this series, but I hope that the next one is better. I'm also looking forward to seeing how Earth is going to turn out now that there are so many more humans (the ones who escaped from near The Core of The Dreadnaut when Syasku, Vivian, Kyle (a cousin of Vivian's & he was under the command of Celeste in Death Adder, and another doctor who worked closely with Vivian, Muffin.

Cottonmouth dives headfirst into the fast-paced and high-stakes escape plot, shifting away from the Naga x human romance that defined the earlier books in the series. While I appreciated the intensity and the adrenaline-fueled storyline, I found myself missing the deeper exploration of the unique relationship dynamics that initially drew me into the series.

In this installment, the focus is primarily on survival, action, and the mounting tension of escaping a dangerous situation. The stakes are high, and the pacing reflects that, keeping you on the edge of your seat as the characters face one challenge after another. The world-building and the dangers they encounter are still richly detailed, and you get a strong sense of the peril that surrounds them at every turn.

However, because of this shift, the Naga x human romance takes a backseat, and that was a bit of a letdown for me. One of the things I loved most about the previous books was the slow-burn tension, the exploration of cross-species love, and the unique chemistry that developed between the characters. In Cottonmouth, that emotional depth and romantic connection feel more like an afterthought. It’s not that there isn’t any romance at all, but it’s definitely more subdued, as the characters are more concerned with their survival than with developing their relationship.

For readers who thrive on action, danger, and the constant threat of being caught, Cottonmouth will absolutely deliver. It’s a thrilling ride from start to finish, with moments of real suspense that will keep you turning the pages. But if, like me, you were hoping for more of the romantic and emotional development that has been a hallmark of the series, you might find this one falling a bit short.

Overall, while Cottonmouth is still an engaging and well-written entry in the series, it wasn’t my favorite. The high-stakes action was entertaining, but I missed the balance of romance and plot that made the earlier books stand out. If you’re here for the love story, you might find this one lacking. However, if you’re all about the thrill of the chase, it’s sure to satisfy.

I enjoyed the book, even though the setting and the story were much darker than usual in this series.
We saw Syasku being captured in the last book, he was trying to catch Laura and Azsote intervened. Back then I thought he deserved it, he didn't try to approach Laura with kindness or gentleness, he just went to grab her like a wild animal in rut. In this one I was so sorry for him, yes, he didn't have the easiest character, but he didn't deserve anything that happened to him here. Humans on the Dreadnaut were vile, Ursula and her medical team was running experiments on Syasku and torturing him, because he wasn't speaking to them, and they knew the Nagas could communicate. He was very curious about a fearful, young woman in the medical team, she smelled familiar and showed him kindness.
Vivian was appalled by what was being done to Syasku, but she couldn't do anything to stop it. She had to take part in the experiments, taking samples of his blood and administering drugs, because she was of the medical Yulen clan and her father was the Commander of the whole Dreadnaut. Syasku attacked her and left her with a cut on her chin during their first meeting, her mask was displaced then and she had to breath in his pheromones, because she was getting feverish and her libido started going haywire. She didn't know back then what was happening to her, but we of course did ;)
Their situation was awful, Vivian was thrown into a room with him, when Ursula and her father realized that Syasku won't talk without a mate and she was the only one he wanted. They fought the pull of the pheromones for quite some time, but when they finally let themselves get close it was a very sweet relationship. They were both starved of affection and even in their prison cell they found happiness in each other's arms.
I had only one problem with the story, Asera didn't deserve what happened. He was used by a sociopath and I was very sad for him.
The overarching story was great, I can't wait to see what will happen on Earth next!
