As Max and the team defeats yet another boss in the tower, they quickly realize that they are facing harder things than most.
Each of them must work together to overcome challenges that not only test their strength and power but also their mind as new and dangerous puzzles begin to appear.
Yet behind every rainbow and new opportunity that comes, someone is there trying to steal the freedom one gains.
Their power is growing and the realization of how strong they have become and the truth that there are still others even more so, they must work together to climb the tower and acquire the power needed to be safe from those who hunt Max.
80% of the story consisted of mini cutscenes thrown into the middle of a fight. We'd get a few paragraphs, then cut to something else. Nonstop fighting with random cutscenes or down time.
I'm not sure I've ever read a more disjointed story before. Lots of action suffers from lack of tension and getting tossed into a fight for a few seconds then tossed into another, over and over, leaves little time to get the reader to care. This book has zero stakes, zero tension, and then leaves the story on the dumbest cliffhanger. I've encountered a few stories that did that and it's not good. It's a weak attempt at creating tension and suspense.
Anyway, rant over. Disappointing book in a series I had hopes for. 50/50 I give the next book a try in hopes something happens.
It was a slog. The problem with overpowered characters is the tale gets old with on conquest after another. Repetitive and slogging. Not going to read the next for a while. Hopefully I'll forget and it'll be new on the next one. Bleh
I am enjoying the team’s OP leveling through tower! I am especially happy it appears he is finally developing a mutual beneficial working relationship with his Black skill! This book did just end in a cliff hanger, so I am eager to know if he escapes or manages to defeat this powerful foe!
Great story, however book riddled with typos, unfinished thoughts, punctuation errors...
I normally do not leave reviews but am finding more and more books that are just unedited, and make a piss poor read because of it.
This is a great story, I'm sure a lot of work went into writing it, however writer was in such a hurry to get all of these books out, that he failed to edit them. All books up to this point have been riddled with typos, unfinished thoughts, punctuation errors, rambling meaningless dialogue, and a host of other issues making the books difficult to read. I have found myself constantly rereading lines, sentences, and paragraphs trying to figure out what the writer is trying to convey. Numerous times I felt like two different people wrote the book, taking turns whenever the other was too drunk to write.
I feel the writer, Mango Media, and Amazon should all be ashamed of publishing unedited books! Mr. Wilson even went as far as naming one of his characters after his editor... Why?
You know something I totally forgot why aren't they taking the stat potions? I believe it's 2 potion per stat per year. The main character can make them, hell they're rolling in tens of thousands of gold. They can buy them.
Also the author really really doesn't want to flesh out alchemy and potions. I find that really annoying. Everybody seems to have infinite stamina so stamina potions are kinda meaningless. But I can't believe we don't have mana potions. Even the potion that doubles your size CON and STR would be great even if the other stats change. There are plenty of times Fowl just gotta take a hit.
I wrote this before how the author will leave things ambiguous to leave himself open to pulling tricks out of a bag. For example we suddenly have earth spears. No upgrade happened to elemental mastery. Just something Tanila can do now. Also we don't know what she chose as her 3rd skill. I also wonder why they haven't upgraded any of their skills to legendary besides Tanila. They have bought back a veritible mountain of Crystals and materials. Legendary healing Archery shielding, hell even legendary Thorned defender. I also don't like how the author seems to have changed the mechanics of taunting for Fowl. He got a skill thorn aura and for multiple books if you got close you were just getting taunted. It was persistent. It's not like it was activated and went on cool down. But this book it seems to be written as an activation skill.
This is also a bit of a superman situation. Where the character is so strong and scales super hard that you need to find ways to nerf them. Like Max not using the berserker skill anymore or intentionally being inefficient in combat. Or being stupid. Max was fighting a boss and thought it would be stupid to use rampage, magical strike, and power strike at the same time. I couldn't wrap my head around that. Thats efficientcy. Rampage makes all 3 attacks have the effect of magical strike and power strike. And max was saying "what do I do if it doesn't work?" Go berserk??? Hello? "What if it heals?" You have festering touch. That stops healing.
I feel this is probably the worst part of the story as a whole. Because once the main cast is strong enough so many interesting things can happen. Visiting Max's family, Fowls and Tanila family as well. Going to other kingdoms. Probably fighting and killing Tanila sister. The back to back combat isn't really for me. I feel there is much less slice of life in the series right now. So hopefully it won't be too long to get to the really good stuff.
Cliffhangers are not a part of this genre. This isn’t a tv series. Lose a star for that.
Lose a star for the context errors, like how does Max know what a peg leg is? What a plane is? What a bike is? Etc. This isn’t Isekai, he’s not from Earth.
The characters are kind of annoying to the point they’re always mushing over their feelings and constantly giving the MC a reach around for how great a person he is. Like no one talks like that irl. Just seems weird and inauthentic. Plus the characters can be contradictory, going from hating to kill real people and using their black/red skills, then killing dozens of people and saying it “had to be done”, and brushing it off. Just inconsistent. There’s also no real character growth, other than maybe the princess elf, as they rest are all the same the whole series.
Other than that, it’s a decent series. Way overly focused on the delving with no stakes as we know they always win, as opposed to the interesting stakes of actual people outside the tower. We had a taste of that in this book, and really makes you see what this series is missing. I understand this will have a greater role in the future of the series, but despite the lots of combat and the variation in enemies and scenarios, it’s all low stakes and repetitive.
Also the MCs gimmick means it’s difficult to follow his progression, but it’s not a narrative issue since he’s OP. But it does take away some of the payoffs and enjoyment most audiences have in this genre as we like stat sheets, in moderation.
I feel hopeful this series will improve as the outside the tower drama takes center stage.
This is the book I quit the series on. I was pretty much done with it on the last book, but didn't feel like searching for a new read so kept going.
Editing goes even further downhill on this one. A few times per chapter I had to stop and figure out what it was trying to convey. Non-stop repetitive battles that don't advance the plot, still happening. What finally made me put it down was the inconsistencies. A ton of them are in world building and how characters act. I'm constantly confused as to why certain things happen. I also generally dislike books where the MC is so overpowered that you don't see the point of them having party members. He'd be better off on his own, and his "family" would be safer away from him and being targeted by various things.
The timing has always feel extremely rushed. He's been at this for like 2 months but has surpassed people who have done this for 100 years, meanwhile falling "in love" while doing this all. Oh, you just finished a super hard boss fight and are covered in sweat and gore, lets kiss! Oh, you created a super strong weapon that another "family" member could use, lets just bind it to yourself and put it in storage to never use. Earlier books have stated that they come out of portals cleaned of everything on them such as blood and gore, then other times that's ignored and they exit covered in it. Can it be consistent please.
My final straw was when he got an item that added an (insert number) bonus. Then the next chapter it stated that it added a different bonus.
If you are like me and were on the fence before starting this book, save yourself some time and stop now.
This book felt like either reading the headlines of news articles, or at times like looking at flip art in the corner of a book that some one drew. Another example might be that it feels like stop action film where you just get snippets of the story. The lack of detail in most things is frustrating. You skip from scene to scene, often skipping most combat or entire floors. Not to mention so many of the scenes it shows are essentially repeats of the ones before.
The MC gets some interesting powers, but that’s about it. The end of the book leaves you on a cliffhanger, but before the last paragraph of the novel, I didn’t really feel like very much actually happened in this book. You kind of feel like you are in the same place as you were at the end of the last one, except the MC is higher in the tower than he was.
a very good dungeon delving story, but Id like the story line to advance more
The MC and his team continue to delve, leveling at a ridiculous rate. Still every delve is far harder, yet with far greater rewards than the level should be.
Meanwhile, elves still want the MC’s head and even the elven queen gets in on the action. Somewhere else in the multiverse, a powerful patron blesses the MC, but his detractors up the ante too. There is also a stealthy new player, not yet known to the MC who makes his appearance in the last chapter.
The book continues to be well written and interesting. It has diverse dungeons and monsters, puzzles and even cyborg golems.
Still, I would like to see more storyline beyond the delving. There should also be more behind the scenes peaks into the adversaries, their motivations and their nefarious plans.
leaving this book on a cliffhanger only gets you four stars, don’t be humoristic
Good book, great storyline, good character, progression and good character growth. The MC and his associates are fun, loving likable, and you want to care about each of them. I only think the party needs another companion for the single elf. The only issue I have for this book is the Arthur thinks he will be around to release another book that indicates a great deal of hubris. As far as I’m concerned tomorrow is not promised to anyone, I know people say I’m pessimistic no, I’m a realist. I’ve had so many series where author does not live to continue his work. Don’t leave us read us hanging by a thread finish up each book as if it was a standalone story as you continue to continuity. You get four stars, I may take it down to three.
a four star book with no ending. This book was fun and enjoyable for the most part, but the ending makes it just okay. I cannot stand author's lack of professionalism leading them to end a book at a cliffhanger instead of spending the time to finish their stories in a neat way. This has everything the past books had, the action, progression, character development, comedy, but it was missing an ending. The only reason I'm reading on at this point is because the next book is already out, but if this happens at the latest published book I don't know if I'd trust the author enough to invest more time into their books. If you are okay with the story randomly ending at a cliffhanger then I think this would be a fun light read. If you prefer some structure, then maybe start reading with that in mind or don't bother picking it up.
I almost ruined my Kindle. A few pages into the book, Shawn hinted that Max would be fighting four "people" which gives a chance for extra stats and skill acquisition. Even though this comes through his dark skills (which I shouldn't be rooting for), I was salivating with anticipation and that caused considerable water damage to the Kindle in my hands. ;-)
Once again, I sped read through the trash mobs and group kills, slowing down to fully appreciate the boss fights. I like that skills are starting to be harder to come by. This makes sense as Max fills out more and more of his ability span.
There were still a few jarring proofreading/editing errors at the beginning of this book, but most of the rest of the book had well crafted writing.
The problem was less with the story and more about the formatting of it. I'm not sure if this was originally a web novel, but the way it's written seems very segmented. As if the author was writing one little section at a time and coming back to it at a later date. The actions sequences feel shallow because they start about halfway through, there's no time in each scene for character development before it switches scenes, it's just a bit of a mess.
There's still progression, both of skills and story. It acts similarly to book 2 as a set-up for future antagonists while the characters constantly delve the dungeons. There's still some good sequences and I'm hoping the next book ramps up the action again.
Gonna be honest, this series has always been a bit lower on my rating list with 2 or 3-star reviews. But I persisted through it since I was able to read them back-to-back and it hit my minimum book expectations.
Now though? It's been over 6 months since I read the previous one and simply cannot remember what I found enjoyable about the series anymore. The jokes are bland and "on-the-nose". The action feels predictable and without any potential consequence and the story itself feels vague and hand-wavy.
Just gonna drop off here, maybe I will give the whole things another shot when the series is completed.
This series is falling apart unfortunately due to poor writing and no checking being done. Lines make no sense as they are missing multiple words. Author seems to forget who is fighting what at times, as characters names and enemies change during fights. Grammar is all over the place, and scene breaks don’t occur when they should. First couple of books were okay but these issues have been present for a long time and are only getting worse which just comes across as lazy.
I'm still annoyed that the protag does this fast and furious meme about "Family", especially with the dwarf.
I hope his is fun.
I really dislike this family tripe the author is running with, and I dislike that greedy dwarf looking for more. Even when the protag sacrifices his gains for him.
I also find it funny that this dwarf is family, and the protag forgets his sister. Doesn't even think of her and what she is doing.
I'm just reading the sequel for completion's sake.
How do you handle the grinding to grow that comes with the LitRPG genre? Each author handles it differently, some skipping it with a "montage" and others boring you by going step by step. This book is a creative mix of the two approaches, so I didn't just miss the growth but didn't have to see every bit.
Again, the setting isn't anything truly new, but the execution of the story and the nuances in the characters are so strong that I'm really enjoying reading it.
This book dropped hard on quality compared to the others. There was soooo many basic mistakes that should have been caught. The story was also dragged out when given multiple chances to speed up. Back on the editing end the author seems to have forgotten or mixed up a lot of details this book. Not just one off sentences but entire pages talking about stuff that isn’t accurate based on past books. This entire book needs a rework.
This series is just great and I am loving every second of it. Each of the characters is unique and although their goal is the same they really go about it in their own unique ways.
I absolutely love these books and can't wait to start the next one which I'm doing right this instant.
As power and skills grow so do the challenges! From eleves and others to gods and advanced dungeon levels. Great, fast paced story that keeps adding wrinkles and twists. Can't wait to read the next book!
Unfortunately, i really don't enjoy reading this series anymore as it reads like an online game commentary watching teenagers play. Furthermore, the story doesn't seem to lead to anything interesting..
Another good addition to the plot line, however this one seems riddled with grammatical errors especiallu during early and mid-book chapters with misspellings and pronouns slips, even a chapter title with 'of' instead of 'off.'
This story of a baker turned into an Adventurer was fantastic. Our dude doesn’t want the power, but only wants his friends to survive along with himself. Great Stuff
Great book yet again. Loved that Seth is accepting his power and status. Just wish the story had delved into the inner workings of the tower and Seth’s Consume skill more.
A few grammatical errors. Some interesting experiences.
A strange experience where it appears the denizens of a dungeon floor are actually from another world and are aware of tower climbers. Not sure if this is a real world or another tower floor.
Shawn Wilson, is am amazing storyteller. And the ultimate level one is a masterpiece. I have loved every book so far. The adventure is intriguing, mind grabbing, and it’s hard to put down once you start reading.
I'm making this series more digestible by skimming most of the time spent in the tower. The formular for these fights and rewards is well set, and rarely deviates. The assassinations and politics outside of the tower are much more interesting.
writing gets worse with more errors and less editing
Just like the title says more errors and clearly less editing as these are released in a hurry. Multiple times the wrong they’re, there, and their were used.
