A Christian Case Against Donald Trump

Rate this book
"What is the twisted gospel of the MAGA kingdom? Nothing less than our own tribe’s domination of the culture using the
brutish, worldly power Donald Trump promises to wield on our behalf. All for the mere price of – everything it means to be a follower of Christ."

Pat Kahnke is a writer and podcaster at Culture, Faith, and Politics. He was an evangelical pastor for 20 years. He was active in the pro-life movement and a life-long Republican until Donald Trump. This is his second book about the dangers Trump poses to the Christian conscience. He also wrote MAGA Resisting the Debasement of the Christian Conscience in 2020.

In A Christian Case Against Donald Trump, he diagnoses the core problems that lead faithful followers of Jesus to support a man like Donald Our desire to bring in an earthly kingdom rather than the kingdom of God, and a misunderstanding of our core calling to the world.

The book is also a deeply biblical study of the anti-Christian tactics Donald Trump and other demagogues use to win Christians over to their godless movements. The book is divided into four main

The Way of Jesus vs. the Way of the World
The Way of Peace vs. the Way of the Demagogue
The Way of Truth vs. the Way of the Deceiver
The Way of Justice vs the Way of the Oppressor

Pat Kahnke also tackles several hot-button issues like abortion and immigration along the way, in the light of scripture.

A helpful, challenging book for anyone who wants to follow Jesus through turbulent political times.

This book expresses all the perceptions I have had of Trump . Why do Christian’s want to support him? As a Christian I have been very upset by this phenomenon. The book explains it… and it is very frightening!
As the author states: if Trump is re-elected it is the fault of the misguided evangelical Christians!

Everyone who purports to follow Jesus should read this!!

Read and share!

Sadly, supporters aren’t likely to read this book BUT it provides great talking points for those of us who oppose Trump and the MAGA movement.

This is a book written from a pastoral rather than a political perspective. There is, of course, political perspective in it, but this flows from the pastoral. There is much here about what choosing Trump does to the nation, but this stems from the primary argument: what choosing Trump does to Christianity. What it means for us to choose Barabbas -- the way of power -- over Christ. And most especially, what it means to the choose the way of lies.

And I think the real heart of this book is its lengthy meditation on the Gospel of John, on truth and double-think.

Kahnke ultimately invites us to reflect on Christ, who said "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life," standing before Pontius Pilate. Christ tells this worldly ruler,

"To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth" (John 18:37).

This politician and judge retorts, "What is truth?"

For this man of power, Kahnke says, truth is beside the point. Pilate beholds a man who represents and offers Life, but in the end he chooses simply to be the instrument of more death, condemning Jesus and saving Barabbas instead.

Words to reflect on. Word to live by.

Patrick Kahnke, a former pastor, and brother in Christ explains his deeply held beliefs and warns us of the risk we face by taking the words and actions of one man and placing this person before anyone else, even themselves while forgetting the teachings of Jesus Christ. He also provides references and examples of each of his reasonings for authoring this book.

As a follower of Jesus, I personally have not understood the logic of those fellow believers who have voted in the past and who continue to go along supporting Trump in his run for another term as president of the United States. Trumps words and actions to me do not match with what Jesus represents (the care for the poor, the oppressed, the foreigners among us etc.) I have found by reading Patrick’s book it answers those questions along with the internal conflict about my own faith, and it gives me peace knowing I was not standing alone in my thoughts.

The two greatest commandments read “love the lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” and the second is like it “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-40) It is this love that we show our obedience, and it must be exclusive and complete. One must ask themselves, if this is true does Trump truly represent the same in Jesus or is it possible, he only seeks his own desires and only his? Is this what we want as a leader of our country?
I hope and pray that those who genuinely love the lord will take the time to open their hearts and minds and read this book.

My thoughts!

As a follower of Christ I am truly baffled as to how many Christians follow the conman and believe in him. This book gave me hope to know I am not alone in my belief about this individual and that there are other Christians who have not sold what Jesus has done for them for a bowl of stew.

I have a feeling that Trump supporters give this book 1 star, and others like me, give it 5. I'm just relieved I'm not alone in wondering how in the world Christians can support a president who is the antitheses of anything Christ like. "He's not perfect, but.....he's far better than the other side," is the same old sorry excuse. More care and evaluation is given to choosing produce at the grocery store than electing a president. And if all of the apples are bruised and rotten, I don't have to buy any of them. I can choose a different fruit or go to a different store. The assumption against us who didn't vote for Trump is that we must have voted for Harris then, is a fallacy. There are third party candidates for president who represent my values and who possess much greater leadership skills. What response do I get then? Oh, our elections are binary. A write-in candidate is a wasted vote. Another favorite: "We're not electing a pastor,......policy over personality...."

Patrick Kahnke addresses these arguments and other concerns from a biblical perspective rather than a political perspective. He thinks like I do, and I appreciate his arguments. I recommend that the MAGA members read this book, if they desire to have an understanding about how "the other side" thinks.

A+ for "never Trump", However, Christians lose and Socialism wins.

The author will offer his view of what he considers valid reasons not to vote for Trump. Okay....fine. What I found upsetting was that no solutions were offered. As a patriot, I can see not voting for Trump, what I can't see is voting FOR Harris! However, in my opinion, if you don't vote at all, you have no right to complain if your government goes toward Socialism. Voting FOR Harris would send this country Hell bent for leather toward Socialism. I'm unwilling to do that! Period.
A vote for Harris is a vote to progress a socialist agenda. Socialism breaks all Ten Commandments, which this previous pastor failed to mention. So, I will.
1) You shall have no other gods before Me. Socialism and its offshoots communism, fascism, democratic socialism and National Socialism (Nazism) enshrine the state above all other powers. There is no room for God, which is why socialists are in a permanent war with the church and are bent on creating a faith-free society.
2) You shall make no idols. Idols are anything that takes the place of God in the hierarchy of values. Under socialism, sheer power over one’s fellow man is an idol. Another is building of utopias, the unicorns of government, because such perfect societies do not exist.
3) You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. When socialists take over a culture, it becomes depraved and perverse. To enforce their new immoral order, socialists openly blaspheme God and particularly Jesus Christ. This is never more apparent than in Hollywood movies.
4) Keep the Sabbath day holy. Sundays are no different from any other day in socialist societies. In fact, people going to church on a Sunday are identified and often persecuted in places like communist China, where atheism is the official state religion. Even in our market-based society, materialism, a necessary precept of socialism, has pushed respect for the Sabbath to the margins.
5) Honor your father and your mother. Socialism has been at war with marriage and family since the French Revolution in 1789. Frederich Engels, co-author with Karl Marx of “The Communist Manifesto,” later wrote about the need to do away with marital fidelity and to assign children to communal rearing. Marx identified the family as a competing source of authority and a bulwark of the church. Both stand in the way of collectivist regimes. Even today, parents are called terrorists for speaking out at school board meetings on the curriculum being taught.
6) You shall not commit murder. Many people misread this commandment as a broader order not to kill for any reason, which denies the moral difference between taking innocent human life and executing murderers. Socialists have long promoted abortion, the direct taking of an innocent human life, as a way to “liberate” women and men from parental responsibilities. For a woman to control her own body.
7)You shall not commit adultery. In the 1960s, Americans became familiar with the term “free love." Sex outside marriage, prostitution, pornography and abortion all militate against marriage fidelity. Socialists deploy euphemisms like “choice” and “sex work” to cover the retreat from biblical morality.
8)You shall not steal. Socialism is grand theft. It uses the state to take earnings from productive people and redistribute it to create dependency and thus political power for those handing it out. Slavery is 100 percent taxation; when someone else controls the fruits of one’s labor. Socialist countries first control and then seize private property. Marx summed up “The Communist Manifesto” in one sentence: “Abolition of private property.”
9) You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. This is not just about telling lies in a witness situation but also about using lies to advance one’s wellbeing. Socialism is built on a mountain of lies about human nature, which is why it eventually must resort to violence. Marx wrote that “the ends justify the means,” which means you can do or say anything as long as it advances the revolution. The media has demonized Trump, including calling him Hitler. No wonder an assassination was attempted by the Republican. Another example of the lies: “You can keep your health plan if you like your health plan.” Additionally, Walz constructed a hotline during COVID for neighbors to inform on people who were not following his mandates.
10) You shall not covet. Socialism’s main engine is envy, stoking resentment against others who have more, even to the point of using violence to get it. In Genesis, Cain killed Abel out of envy for Abel’s achieving God’s favor. Envy was also on display when Satan promised Adam and Eve that if they defied God, then “ye shall be as gods.” Coveting divinity got Satan kicked out of Heaven, and it’s what he and his minions continue to peddle in a variety of forms including pride, envy and socialism.
Valid points exist for never Trumpers, but to vote FOR Harris is far worse and even more against God, IMO.

A tragically misguided brother in Christ. Patrick wraps himself in a veneer of virtue casting stones at what he describes as "venom and lies". Prophesing himself to be wise he debases himself throughout the book with mischaracterizations of Trump (access Hollywood tape described as sexual assault), constant begging the question "they're hate rallys, trust me, but I won't provide citations") and intellectual hernias ("Trump is the must unchristian person to seek the presidency, but also Trump is just a fallen man like the rest of us")

Patrick extoles the virtues of Christ throughout the book and attacks what he perceives as messages to "hate thy neighbor". In a twist of irony, one would be hard pressed to find a book claiming to give a Christian perspective that had more hate seeping from it's pages. Patrick hates Donald Trump, that much is clear. He cobbles together snippets of quotes or personal experiences to attempt to justify his hate, but it pours out from the overflowing of his heart into the minds of fellow believers dealing with this sin of hate in their own lives. The former pastor is still leading a flock through these writings, and he is leading them astray with the false assurance that the hate they feel for another man created in God's image is just and right.

Secondary to that grave sin of leading believers astray, Patrick attacks our brothers in Christ for what he has concluded is sinful political activism. Patrick lays out a dramatic case against a strawman that believers that vote for Trump are doing so because we put our faith in Trump and home to usher in the MAGA kingdom or "the way of Barrabas". He makes no attempt to prove this strawman and doesn't engage in good faith with the possibility that believers that differ with him do so on firm biblical grounds. Instead Patrick prefers to create an idolatrous "Trump is our savior" characature as the motivator to all of his brothers that came to a different conclusion. Thou shall not bear false witness Pastor Kahnke.

Millions of reasonable Christians came to the defendable conclusion that Trump was better for us, our families, our country, and our faith than his opponent. Rather than deal with coherent arguments that led to our brothers and sisters pulling the lever for Trump, Patrick spews venom and lies.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

I found Pat Kahnke through the YouTube algorithm.

I resonated with what he had to say and, just as importantly, how he said it.

No yelling, screaming, name-calling, partisanship, or "what-about-ism"—just a healthy dose of truth given in love.

So it was no surprise when I read his book that the same tone comes across.

The book is a short, well-written litany of many of the myriad reasons why voting for Donald Trump is damaging to the country and corrosive to your own soul.

If I had the ability, I would require everyone voting for Trump or considering voting for him to read this book. That won't happen, but at least I can say this: if you are an evangelical Christian who feels pressured to vote for Trump, please read this book.

America's Way out of Its Political Muck

This book is profound! I've read every book and article available, trying to make sense of the political maze America is experiencing post-2024 election. I am mortified my fellow Jesus-followers played such a key role in electing such an evil man. Patrick Kahnke raises the stage curtain so we see the machinations behind.

Excellent Book

This author has laid out well articulated reasons, that all Christians should read, explaining why DT is not a good candidate for president. The author refers to Christians who need understand that DT is taking advantage of them for his own benefit. He writes from the perspective of a lifelong Republican who is pro-choice, so he's not just trying to get you to vote for a Democrat. I love his reasoning and common sense.

I voted for Trump in 2016 but have not nor will I vote for him again. The lies, rhetoric filled with hate, revenge for anyone who opposes him, trying to overturn the results of an election, and yet so many so called “ Christians” have given him a pass on his character. He is not above the law and has to be held to account for his behavior. Remember Trump University and all the money he scammed from people. Go back and remember all he has done in the name of “Trump.” He is only for himself and he is a dangerous authoritarian whose “Christianese” language is nothing that reflects the Jesus I know.

Thank you Pat Kahnke for writing what many of us see but our brothers and sisters get stuck on issues like abortion, the economy, and immigration but who our leader is outweighs that for me. I can overlook policy issues with Democrats in favor of Democracy. I pray for our nation and our future without all this division and what I see as hypocrisy with DJT. Proverbs 6:16-19 “ There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.”

For those of us who don't suffer from TDS...

Trump Delusion Syndrome (TDS): The inability to perceive any of the factual information related to Donald Trump, instead believing the lies and distortions presented by Trump and his supporters about his behavior.

... this book is a breath of fresh air.

The author, a retired Evangelical Pastor, is careful to back up his claims with both supporting evidence and scripture. He thus presents a compelling case for how and why supporting Donald J. Trump and/or the MAGA movement is the very antithesis of anything Christian.

The book is short, and I got through it in three short sittings. It's not a hard read, and my Kindle copy is bleeding yellow from being marked up so much. I found much value in this book, and I suspect that you will too - that is, of course, unless you suffer from TDS.

The only complaint that I have - and it's minor - is that I found the author's use of footnoting scriptural citations rather than using parenthetical in-line citations cumbersome and counter-productive. But other than this stylistic gnat straining, I found little to criticize in this book and much to praise.

P.S. Read the 1 and 2-star reviews of this book on Amazon; they are hilarious and instructive as to the MAGA mindset.

A Must Read

This books should be required reading for everyone who calls themself a Christian, for everyone, regardless of their faith, who ever supported Trump, for everyone who follows politics, for every American who honestly loves what our country stands for and who cares about the direction it is headed.
That should be all of us, regardless of our religious and political beliefs. We don’t have to agree with everything the author says, but we owe it to ourselves and to each other to open our minds, and our hearts, to its underlying truths.

It was more of a tract than a book. It was fine for what it was, though I personally think that the arguments following the authors thesis would’ve been better if they had been done in the opposite order - perhaps parts three and four, then parts two and one.

I bought this book as an atheist, in order to try and convince my parents of the threat and evil that is Donald Trump in the language in which they speak. I don’t know if it will help, but I have to try something.

Courageous critique of MAGA’s version of Christianity.

This should be read by those who call themselves Christians but still support Trump. Trump’s philosophy and Christianity are incompatible.

Right on!

Kahnke's case against Donald Trump is right on! But more than a case against Trump , it's a call to the Christians behind support Trump to wake up. It's grounded in Scripture and solid theology, unlike those who blindly give their allegiance to Trump.

Review of A Christian Case Against Donald Trump

This book is a thoughtful and informative look at Christian teachings and how Trump’s political rhetoric and proclaimed policies are at odds. It challenges each of us to recognize and decide how we choose to live our lives in faith.

Great, to the point, chapters don't have to read in order. 'How to' follow Christ Jesus and not sell your soul while navigating life. It's a pretty quick read, but I generally have 3-5 books going at a time ;-)

WELL DONE PASTOR KAHNKE

This book is well thought out and really helped me see clearer why I am so disturbed that so many that call themselves Christians are supporting such a man. It’s a question of righteousness…having a right relationship with God and with fellow Christians. Those that are so blindly follow Trump cannot claim righteousness in any form. Thank you Pastor KAHNKE for your wisdom.
