If only we could all meet the key to our chronic illness at the grocery store... Haha.

Luckily for Amara, our FMC, this is what happens, and it leads her one hell of a wild ride. Literally.
This book was very fast paced and does end on a cliffhanger, so be mindful of that! Out of my usual genre (I don't often read PNR books), but a big fan of the imagery and vibe of Dante's Inferno which has clearly been used for inspiration here.

Some of the characters were really intriguing; I'm curious about both Ember aand Hans who are incredibly eccentric. There were definitely points of this I was sat thinking 'what the actual fuck did I just read'! However, the smut is FILTHY. Like... Seriously. Although the instalust is absolutely off the charts as well, and it's definitely not sane or entirely consensual - but the demons seem happy so who's arguing? Not Amara, and not Death either.

The final sentence in my notes says YOU DID NOT JUST DO ME DIRTY AND END IT LIKE THAT, CHAOS. DAMMIT. So, make of that what you will. Oh, and read the triggers, because they mean it.

Why choose is one of my fav genres. This was a nice and refreshing storyline. There's a lot of four horseman stories out there so a lot of the books can get redundant, this one felt refreshing. I was hooked at the beginning. It did get slow in the middle, I do feel like there could be more storyline, something that drives me towards the end of the book. This book was just all about dark romance, depravity and filth....which isn't bad haha 😉 😉 . The intimate scenes are graphic. I feel like this is the perfect book for dark romance readers, while I like me a good dark romance, at times I was like wtf this is DARK haha but that's on me and my preferences (me being a wimp) not the author or the book itself. I think I have preferential treatment because my name is Amara haha. I love that when they told her that she was Death, she was just cool with it, no freak out, just more like ok cool now what haha. Like I'd be all what!?!? Gives you vibes of this book and its humor. The ending ends on a cliffhanger so beware. Interesting the aspect of Greek mythology thrown in at the end, with all this talk about demons and there's the river Styx, it didn't feel like those two correlated, threw me off a bit, aren't they separate depictions? But what do I know, I could be wrong. I’m not very religious so I could totally be wrong.

Overall I think people who love dark romance will absolutely go feral for this book. I'd rate it a 3.5 but I feel like people who enjoy this genre more (I read dark occasionally) they would rate it a 4!!!! ❤️

I stumbled across Death Defiant on the staff-recommend shelf at my favorite indie bookstore, and the striking cover all but leapt into my hands. The bookseller’s grin when she rang it up—complete with the whispered scoop that Charlotte Chaos is deep into Book 2—sealed the deal.
Chaos delivers everything I crave in dark paranormal romance and then some:
Characters that carve themselves into your soul. Amara’s whip-smart snark, Ethan’s unsettling charm, Tristan’s icy intensity, and Caden’s steady warmth form a “why-choose” dynamic that somehow feels both delightfully messy and perfectly right. With three men AND three demons, you have a total of 6 possessive personalities brutally loving Amara/Death. It gets intense and my heart is racing just typing this!
A plot that sprints. From grocery-aisle collisions to celestial conspiracies, every chapter detonates a fresh twist. Just when I caught my breath—boom!—another secret, another stake, another deliciously sinful scene.
World-building that fizzes with attitude. Heaven and Hell haven’t felt this irreverently fresh since Gaiman & Pratchett. Chaos paints apocalypse in neon colors—equal parts menace and mirth—and I loved every audacious brushstroke. Obsessive imps, hell cats, portals, and yes, a unicorn.
If a book could hijack every human reaction, Death Defiant pulled it off. The final sentence left me howling for more.
Bottom line: Charlotte Chaos doesn’t just write a story; she detonates it in your hands. If you like your romance scorching, your humor dark, and your mythology served with a side of mic-drop one-liners, grab Death Defiant today—then join me in the corner, rocking impatiently until Book 2 arrives. I'll have snacks waiting for you in the Chaos Corner.

3.5 ⭐
I met the author at an event and absolutely adored her. Another vendor had done sprayed edges on her book which were beautiful.

I did enjoy the book overall and there were multiple scenes that come to mind that made me swoon, gasp, and break down crying. I literally went out to get Mexican after reading a certain scene (which I won't spoil).

Sometimes the multiple perspectives were hard for me to keep straight and I felt like there were a few moments that I wished there were more details and drama. I am excited for the next book as I'm hoping Hell and the Devil will bring even more depth to the story.

If you want a why choose with morally gray horsemen of the apocalypse, then this book is for you. :)

Warning this does end in a cliffhanger and I don't think the next book is out yet!
I actually really enjoyed this book. It had a good mix of fantasy that blended with real life. The author did a good job of having the setting be more of the human world than it being all fantasy.
I like the dynamic of the characters as well. Amara slips in nicely to the horsemen's lives.
Caden is calm, Ethan is the perky wild one, and Tristan is the designated grumpy one.
Of course it's why choose, and Amara being the final piece works well with each personality.

This book had me laughing and crying. There was a chapter that I just didn't get why a why choose fantasy romance would have such a gut wrenching chapter but again the author does an amazing job showing why and creating development for Amara.

4 stars, would have been 5 if the series was more finished or the ending wasn't a horrible cliffhanger.

I found this book through a book fair where I was able to meet the author. When she described the book she included Hans- a grim reaper who knits, plays an accordion, and rides a sparkly unicorn that eats tacos.
I started reading that night and immediately was drawn into the world of the four horseman. There is tension, there is drama, and there are parts that I literally giggled out loud. It was a quick read with multiple points of view, but it didn’t get confusing it added to the story so well. I cannot wait to read the second book and spend more time in purgatory with Hans

I cannot wait for book two !!!

This is a fresh take on the four horseman of the Apocalypse ! The chaos is a delight and is well balanced with a deep storyline and lovable flawed characters.

And the spice. THE. SPICE.
All the men are different which is appreciated in a RH and they do not fall in the typical personnalities which is refreshing.

Long story short. I 100% recommend that book as long as you stay away from my man Caden.

Spicy, Sweet Chaos

Oooo wowww. This was the first story I have read of the four horseman and I not only want to continue this storyline but read more. The spicy scenes were spicy. One especially was 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ and the others were 🌶️🌶️🌶️. Amara is a curvy girl just like me and it’s always nice to read books with curvier girls. I definitely recommend this book and I’m gonna start the next one as soon as possible!!!

ember is my spirit animal

This first instalment is so good! Ember is definitely my favourite side character—she’s like an R18 version of Peeves.
The damn book was such a page turner! I was hooked then it had to go and end on a cliffhanger …. Now I just have to go and read the next instalment . Damn you author!! Well played!!

Holy demons

Girl you absolutely didn't disappoint with this one. I wanted those demons to conquer me. Only death and Amara could control them. I love how they helped her and how each fell in love with her in their own way. I can't wait for book 2!!!!

I need book two like yesterday! Not going to lie I had to look up the lore about the four horsemen but I feel like each was
portrayed amazingly. The novel itself is a perfect blend of spice and plot. The spice is a solid 4/5 chili peppers.

A spicy tale of The Four Horsemen

Charlotte has a way of making her characters all unique with different personalities.
There were some parts where I wished the scene was written out or more detailed, but don't take that to mean the story is "less." Not at all. They're just additions I wish we're there.
I loved her take of the four horsemen and the little twists that come with it.
As a reverse harem, why choose romance, I expected multi-POV, but there were more than I expected. It took a second to get used to but there was a purpose for them.
I'll leave this review with one of my favorite quotes:
“Even if I want you in a way nobody ever will? I am mad about you, Amara. I want you so desperately. To use and abuse like my favorite toy. I want to play with you until you break for me. Does that scare you?”

How can it end that way?!?! I am trying to piece together what I know.. What I think I know and what I think is going on! I love Ember in all of her chaotic nonsense. Hans made me smile in the best way, his demeanor makes perfect sense with what I got to join in on. The boys are all so different but manage to compliment each other so well.
I will be reading book 2 as soon as I wrap my head around 1.

Brilliant take on the four horsemen. Loved this book I couldn't stop reading, got 3 hours sleep before I had to be up for work.
I love amara and the guys, but mostly love Hans, he needs his own book, when I go I hope he's the one who comes for me.
I can honestly say that I never expected a spicy book to make me cry, I mean actually sob, you will know when you get to that Chapter.

This book is absurd in the absolute best way. 😂 I also was so surprised by the emotion I felt reading this. The found family aspects are touching, the why choose is enticing, and then BAM: trauma and I’m sobbing 😭 I loved the book and I’m very excited for book 2!

I really enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to the next one.
HOWEVER, something I reaaaaally wish was present in this book or on the author’s website/Facebook is a trigger warning list. The chapter about the reaping with children was so hard to read. I think it was really well written, but I SOBBED one of the most I ever have reading a book. So just be prepared!

I have been anticipating reading this book for awhile now but since I’ll be meeting the author Charlotte very soon I thought now would be the best time to dive in and dive in I did!! What CHAOS!! Unexpected chaos at that. This might be a book about the four horseman of the apocalypse but really it’s not how it sounds at all. This book had so many WTF moments including but not limited to buttholes in the wall, comparing ourselves to Pokémon characters, a reaper with a special kind of friend🌈(IYKYK) and a few spicy scenes that one may contain guacamole👀🤣

I loved the characters and the depths of them. I love how they connect to each other in ways that I don’t understand completely yet. But they are fierce, broken, and above all loyal to each other. I wish I had a favorite and I thought it was Ethan but really I love them all equally though me and Pestilence are not seeing eye to eye… Anway on to book 2 for more Chaos💋
