"the whole series has been a joy to read" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Goodreads reviewFour interconnected steamy historical romances set in England and America from the 1830s to the 1860s following two generations of the powerful and wealthy Stanton family.
Book 1: The Viscount’s Scandalous Affair An illicit affair set in late regency London between two unlikely lovers. Life has not been kind to Charlotte Harding. Orphaned, impoverished and plain-looking, she depends on the charity of relatives who take her in when she has nowhere else to go. In their London home, she meets the rich and handsome Viscount Stanton who is promised to the beautiful heiress, Miss Powell. Charlotte is smitten with him on first sight, but the Viscount barely notices her except to note her unprepossessing looks and shabby dress. But when the opportunity presents itself, Charlotte seizes it to make him a scandalous offer—a short, discreet affair in return for memories to treasure in her spinsterhood.
Book 2: The Vixen’s Unlikely Marriage A steamy romance set in Victorian England featuring a marriage of convenience between two unlikely characters. Grace Stanton is beautiful, vivacious and no innocent when it comes to men. Her carefree, happy life is disrupted when her family is summoned to the bedside of her grandfather, the dying Earl of Stanton, in England. There, circumstances force her into a marriage with the last person she ever thought to marry—Benedict Sedgwick, the newly appointed parish curate who wears threadbare clothes and blushes in the presence of women.
Book 3: The Bluestocking’s Secret Obsession A slow-burn but steamy friends-to-lovers romance set in Victorian England and America in the Civil War. From an early age, Sarah Cranshaw has exhibited an unladylike interest in scientific pursuits, earning her the nickname of bluestocking. But behind the eccentric demeanour she presents to the world, there lies a secret. For years, Sarah has been obsessed with the handsome but roguish Mr Templeton. She knows, of course, that she has little hope of earning his affection in return, but still she yearns for him. Then along comes war weary Benjamin Stanton, intent on licking his wounds. Slowly, he is brought back to life by Sarah Cranshaw, the odd but interesting young woman he befriended years ago on his last visit to England. The more time they spend together, the more that unbidden feelings are awakened in the both of them. But can their friendship become anything more when Sarah is obsessed with another man and Benjamin is soon to return to America?
Book 4: The Viscount’s Forbidden Love An MM romance set in Victorian England with plenty of heart, angst and steam—and it does have a happy ending. Daniel Stanton has been blessed with everything. He is charming, confident and handsome—and heir to the great Stanton fortune. At age 24, he has had his fair share of amorous adventures with women, as well as one tantalising experience with a man, leaving him wondering about his sexual inclinations. Those questions are quickly answered when he first meets Ambrose Cranshaw, his grandfather's estate manager. He wants the man, and what he wants, he usually gets. Not this time though.

I don’t know why this author hasn’t come to my attention before. I found the series really enjoyable. Some of the characters were really unlikeable at first, but as each book progressed the author did a fabulous job of redeeming their flaws. There was a lot of emotional scenes and at times i was moved to tears which goes to prove what a wonderful author M M Wakeford is. These are romance novels and there is always a HEA (we wouldn’t read them otherwise) but the trials and tribulations that get them there are thoroughly relatable. So enjoyable will enjoy reading more from this author. It also helps that the author has done her research, there is no talk of sidewalks and foodstuffs that were not available in 19th century England(Big bugbear of mine!) and has explained about the artistic license about using technologies a few years before they were commonplace. This didn’t impact the story. Download this series you won’t be disappointed.
I liked most of the books, some more than others. I gave it 3 ☆'s because it is a good average for the 4 books. The first and the third books were my favorites. I was more drawn to the characters and stories. I liked the characters and the way the storyline flowed from one book to the next. There is a little backtracking on some of them, but it serves two purposes: 1. To add detail and depth to characters and 2. They books could be read independently as there is just enough detail.
