This book is a treasury of literary testimony to the truth that God has called His choice servants to a life of suffering and sacrifice. The modern day Christianity we so loosely profess and so lightly possess blushes in the presence of the martyrs and maidens found in The Bible Makes Us Baptists. The Ana-Baptists depicted in this story reveal the greatness of their faith and the confidence in the Word of God we can all aspire to and desire. May God encourage your heart, enlighten your eyes and embolden your witness while reading this book.
SO EXCELLENT!!!!!!!! I have SUCH a higher appreciation for my Bible more now than ever. Only a few hundred years ago, christians were being starved, imprisioned, buried alive, and tortured just for possesing the New Testament. Those people would hang on to their Bibles for dear life...hide them....take care of them...and more than that...READ them! They would read them over and over and cherish every word, taking it to heart. If they did not learn them so thoroughly, when it might be discovered and taken away, then they would no longer have those promises to read over. They HAD to hide the word in their hearts. This book has ignighted in me a new desire for the New Testament and I now purpose to read it to my children every single morning before we start our day. Just because we are free to read the New Testament now, does not make it any less special. It is as special today as it was then. Maybe even more so, because we are reaping the beneifts of freedom of religon, something those who came before us only longed for. I happen to live in the Netherlands at the time of this read, and it was especially touching to me because I live just an hour from where many of the christians mentioned in this book were burned alive.
Engaging and educational historic fiction. Bamford follows an Anabaptist family in the late 1500s in their flight for a safe place to worship and raise a family. Very powerful story that will make you cry and raise your awareness of Baptist history and suffering.
This is the absolute best book I’ve read all year. Every Christian should read it. I battled tears the whole way as I read about what our forefathers went through to preserve religious liberty. Incredible. Absolutely incredible!
This was such a great book that I think every Christian should read. It put so much in perspective for me. Here's a couple quick notes I jotted down while I was reading this book:
Heart-wrenching. I feel sick to my stomach.
I have no words, just tears.
We're so ungrateful and take way too many things for granted.
I am so grateful for my Bible and for God preserving His word for us after all these years. I am so grateful to be able to take my Bible everywhere I go and read it in peace whether that be in my car, at work, or at the coffee shop. I am so grateful to get to openly go to church and worship God with my brothers and sister in Christ. I am so thankful for all those who came before us and were so brave and courageous and leaned into God's strength to stand strong and to pave a way for religious freedom for us so we don't have to live through the same suffering they endured.
Excellent narrative, full of historical details which have been skillfully woven into the storyline. This book gives a glimpse into the persecutions endured by those who dared to read and believe the Bible, and their steadfastness in the face of torture and death.
