Chaos, the vicious supernatural competition where heroes are born and riches are won.
To most, it's just an urban legend whispered in the darkest shadows, but that all changes when my best friend drags me into a savage world where vampires, shifters, and fae compete for glory and fame.

As a creature without magic, I’d be a fool to enter Chaos, but the prize—a dagger of untold power—could change my powerless existence. With that dagger, I could wield magic, earn respect, and maybe, just maybe, win the heart of the dragon heir… it’s a risk I have to take.

Now, I'm pitted against beasts in a ruthless battle with no powers, no plan, and an infuriatingly attractive ally who’s just as likely to slit my neck as save it. Every round of Chaos leads me closer to seizing my deepest desires or losing everything.

In Chaos, survival is the only rule. And winning is all that matters.

ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ my thoughts
honestly, who would’ve thought i’d end up devouring this book?! it completely surpassed my expectations (i went into it with pretty low ones no offence). it wasn’t amazing or anything, and the stakes in the trials weren’t all that high, but i still had such a great time with it. i got pulled into the story right away and warmed up to the characters almost instantly. even the love triangle didn’t really bother me (who am i?!). for now, i’m #teambecks. i do like talon, but his feelings for locklyn developed a little too quickly for me.

the ending was chaotic, and i somehow failed to predict any of the plot twists even though they were relatively predictable (i admit i tend to read without using my brain most of the time 🤣). and that cliffhanger??? absolutely not! also, the artwork sprinkled throughout the book was beautiful 🤌🏻

ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ overall
i really enjoyed this book and would totally recommend it! just go in with reasonable expectations and let yourself have fun with it. the next book is already out and i’m dying to pick it up, but there are a few more books on my november tbr that i’m hoping to get to and december is dedicated to winter and christmas reads, so it looks like i’ll be continuing this series next year ~ consider this my reminder not to underestimate YA books ever again 🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️

────────── ⋆⋅end⋅⋆ ──────────

pre-read
i’m suddenly craving a book with trials ~ i actually stumbled upon this one a few months ago and added it to my tentative november tbr, though i was pretty hesitant to pick it up. first, it’s YA (no shade, but i don’t think i’d enjoy YA books that much), second, there’s a love triangle (and i hate those—except the one in TID ofc), and third, none of my mutuals have read it so i have no idea what to expect. buttt i’ve decided to give it a chance anyway—who knows? i might actually end up loving it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Perfect for fans of:
- White Hot Kiss & Fourth Wing: an unrequited crush on best friend
- White Hot Kiss & Fourth Wing: a love triangle with best friend and dark mysterious second love interest
- Powerless: a magical world and tournament where the MC has no magic
- Crave: an academy setting of paranormals where the MC is the only non-magic person
- Caraval & HP and the Goblet of Fire: a magical tournament with an epic prize

I really enjoyed this one. This is YA and there is no spice but it was addictive and kept me turning the page to find out all the secrets. I did not expect that ending and can’t wait for book 2.

I just finished listening to the audiobook. It was sensational. The narration, the story, the love triangle…LOVED every second of Hall’s new book.
Gave me all the feels and all the Twilight vibes.
Absolutely add this to your TBR the second it goes live.

Also, have you seen the limited hardcover editions? 👀

DNF. I will not be rating this book. I got 20-something% in and that is all I am willing to read. It is not for me.

Waaaaaaay too pop culture-y for me and predictable in every way. If you enjoyed Crave by Tracy Wolff and *STILL* enjoy those books, then you'll probably really like this.

Final Rating: 4.25/5⭐️

i read this in less than 24 hours and loved it!! it was so captivating and utterly impossible to put down! i’m a sucker for deadly games/trials and this book had it along with shocking plot twists that i was living for! i loved how real locklyn was - she was just a girl going through self doubt and real feelings and it was so refreshing. she found her power within herself without needing anything extra and i was living for it. talon?? omg that man. i love him and am so so excited to learn more about him in book 2! not to mention the ending set up perfectly for book 2 and i can’t believe i have to wait for it😭

overall would highly recommend if you’re into love triangles done RIGHT, deadly trials, high stakes, magicless FMC, and plot twists you don’t see coming!

Sometimes you just need a fun read that’s kinda mindless and keeps you flipping the pages. That was the way I felt while reading this. I was interested in the plot and the trials, but there were other bits that I just could have done without. It was generic, full of unnecessary tropes. You have probably read this book before in one way or another- nothing really stands out except for it was a fun time and felt like watching an episode of Vampire Diaries.

What I liked:
The cover!!!
Gorgeous Fan Art throughout the book
Magical Creatures
Deadly Trials
90s-2000s WB Tv type vibes
High Stakes

What I didn’t like:
I do not mind a love triangle if it’s done properly. Most people will eat this one up, I just thought it was cliche and kinda basic. It’s the typical “I love my best friend but oh look a bad boy 🙄. That’s just not my jam, but I know some people love that. I also don’t like the “mean girl” bully aspect. And it probably goes without saying, the FMC makes some really stupid decisions.

If you like the teen shows from the early 2000s, you will like this, or at the very least be entertained. 😉

WOW!

OK this book was un-put-downabble, and is definitely one of my favorites for the year!

If you're looking for a fast-paced, high stakes YA paranormal fantasy, with a strong FMC, a great friend group, a deadly competition, great supernatural/fantasy world building, and a love triangle that I actually didn't hate LOL, then you need to get this one!

There is a secret competition announced - Chaos - and the reward is a powerful weapon that might grant the owner incredible powers. Thinking that is the way to possibly allowing her to be with her unrequited crush - Becks, a strong dragon shifter and future ruler - Locklyn enters the competition. However, she doesn't expect the new bad boy in town, Talon, to become an ally in the contest, or have him show her that maybe Becks isn't the only guy out there for her.

I loved Locklyn and her strength and tenacity. Although she was born without any powers or abilities, she has never let that get her down. I also loved her friend group, and c’mon - we can’t not talk about those two boys lol - Becks and Talon! (Hi I'm team Talon BTW lol). Becks has been her friend for a decade and they have grown up together, so Beck still sees Locklyn as the powerless friend who needs watching over. Talon, though, sees Locklyn for who she is - capable, strong willed, and an equal, despite no powers. Yall see why I like Talon? LOL

Fans of Twilight, Fourth Wing, and other high stakes YA books with a dash of romance, I think will really enjoy this one.

I need book two IMMEDIATELY lol - that ending!!!

I received a copy to read for an instagram tour. My thoughts are my own.

Damn, I ate this up.

I loved the depth of the world building and everything surrounding Chaos, the deadly games that have the ultimate prize…a weapon that might finally unlock magic for Locklyn.

More to come.

I absolutely loved this book! If you're looking for a fun and easy YA or maybe younger NA romantasy to get lost in, this is the one!

Creatures of Chaos is set in a magical academy full of fae, vampires, dragon shifters, and more. Everyone at the school has powers, except for our FMC, Locklyn. But, she isn't your typical weak FMC, she is a total badass who doesn’t let her lack of magic stop her and instead focuses on physical strength to make up for her weaknesses. We do still get glimpses of her struggles and insecurities about being magicless, which added nice depth to her character.

There is a love triangle with 2 MMCs, Becks, the sweet best friend dragon shifter and future heir, and Talon, the mysterious brooding new guy. The story perfectly balances the slow-burn romance plot with the intense deadly Chaos Trials. Even during the longer trial scenes, one of the MMCs is usually involved, so the romance never felt sidelined. If you’re not a fan of the deadly trials trope, don’t worry—this one keeps things quick paced, exciting, and not very gory/brutal! (but maybe I am biased, because I love deadly trials 🤪). Also, Julie was SO RUDE for that ending, I can't wait to read the next book in the series!! 😩

Thank you so much to Julie Hall for providing me with a copy of the book. All opinions are my own and unbiased.

“But that's the thing about making stupid decisions, they never seem that way at the time.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

Thank you MTMC Tours and Julie Hall for the gifted book!

Wowowowow I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did! I’m not usually an urban fantasy girlie but this one was just 🤌 high stakes trials, love triangle, magic, and a unique plot? Just stunning 🤭

The world building was excellent!! The world itself is very similar to our modern world with cars and electronics, but it’s full of magical creatures like vampires, shifters, and fae. I loved learning about the different species and how their magic worked.

The plot was so engaging! I’m a sucker for a deadly competition so this definitely sucked me in. I found the trials to be very unique and they had me on the edge of my seat! We also had so many different things going on with character relationships and secrets coming out.

Locklyn is a magicless girl in a world of powerful creatures. She struggles with her self worth while being ignored or bullied by her classmates and unable to be with the guy she loves. Lock is so brave and underestimated in this world and I just adored her. She never backs down despite her poor odds without magic 😭

“I've sat back long enough and let things happen to and around me, seemingly powerless to change my circumstances. At my core that isn't who I am. I'm a fighter. It's time I acted like it again.”

With a the love triangle, we get two mmcs: becks and talon.

Becks is a dragon shifter and one of Locks only friends (and also her years long crush 🤭). As the dragon heir, he has little say in his life and struggles with following his duty or his heart.

“To the depths of hell or the heights of the heavens. It's you and me against the world. Always."

Talon is a mysterious creature who enrolls in Nightlark Academy half way through senior year. He’s cocky and witty with plenty of secrets up his sleeve.

“It's not magic that makes the creature powerful, it's the strength of their character and the depth of their soul, and you, Freckles, are the most powerful creature I've ever met.”

I don’t want to spoil anything with the love triangle, so we won’t go in depth with the romance. I will just say, there is a right team to be on and I’m just hoping she ends up with him 😌

💛Academy - urban fantasy

We have an academy full with fae’s, vampires, dragons, magic & creatures.. and the Chaos trials?! This is YA so no spice but has that romantic element & tension between characters.

Talon😅😅 - yes please?! Now we do have a love triangle & I am usually meh with them but this was done right! I enjoyed the banter between the characters & the jealously eeeeeekkkkk!!!!! It was clearly obvious why what happened when it did so yeah if you wanna know who I am choosing, it’s always the ‘bad guy’ 😂🤣

‘Freckles, with you i’m learning to expect the unexpected.’

It really felt like I was apart of the academy. So easy to fall in love with this world & characters. We follow our FMC who is a creature with no magic in this Academy but could she be more if she wins the chaos trials?

There is a huge plot twist/unexpected moments in this story… and that had me gasping!! I LOVED the ending.. because now I know what could be coming next & it just opens us up for so much more to happen?! I don’t want to spoil anything for this but you will be hooked the whole way through this book & then it hits you at the end!

This was a fantastic YA romance fantasy read with amazing easy world building, flowing story & more twists & turns to come!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

4.5 🌟!! If you were obsessed with the epic old-school CW supernatural shows—this book is 100% for you!
Creatures of Chaos by Julie Hall is upper YA urban fantasy at its finest: a world where everyone has powers—shifters, vampires, fae—and in the middle of it all is Locklyn, our stunning, powerless FMC who gets thrown into a secret, high-stakes deadly competition.

Yes, if you loved Powerless, you're going to eat this up!

And the romance?! The slow-burn tension and the start of what might become a love triangle—absolutely delicious. I don’t even usually like love triangles, but TRUST ME… these two guys? You’ll be torn!🙈 Julie Hall is setting us up for something BIG in book 2 (manifesting it 😤), especially after that ending blew the story wide open.

I was hooked by the school setting, the cast of characters and their powers! it’s action-packed, addictive, and SO fun. The audiobook? A+ performance. The special edition? drop-dead gorgeous.
I seriously could'nt put this down and I already need the next book yesterday!!!!

This was an amazing young adult fantasy book. I loved following Locklyn in this story as she enters a dangerous competition against supernatural creatures. I loved seeing her overcome challenges even though she didn’t have powers. I found myself invested in the story and the characters and I absolutely loved reading this one! I can’t get over how this book ended and I will be anxiously awaiting the next installment in this series.

• Generic book mean girl bullies
• The writing is bad and not fun bad
• The 2010s ya cheerleader slut shaming is outdated
• Not like other girls
• Part greenhouse part library sounds terrrrible for the books. UV and humidity are both bad for books 🥴
• “Just another way I’m totally different than every other teen I know” that’s a verbatim quote
• We all know she’s not gonna pick the sweet blonde good guy best friend, even though she’s thirsting after him and I’m sure it’ll be revealed later he reciprocates. The love interest she’s obviously gonna pick is the dark haired broody bad boy named **Talon**
• “What he doesn’t realize is that I’m not like any of those other girls” another direct quote 😒 I’m tired grandpa!!!
• Of course there’s a deadly game too
• So much girl on girl hate. Every girl minus her one friend hates her
• Ughhh the cringe
• How convenient, the prize is the blade 🙄
• Girl you’re gonna risk your life for a dude???? Stand up!
• Ughh you’re so dumb!!!
• The writing is distractingly bad

I was completely obsessed with this book from the beginning. The writing just hooked me and I couldn’t put it down. This book gave me a little bit of Zodiac Academy vibes which I absolutely loved. There’s shifters, magic, trials, lost ancient artifacts, and a girl with no powers living in a magic filled world. I was in love with one of the male main characters. There’s a love triangle, and although I liked both love interests, there’s a clear winner for me. The banter was so good, I was smiling ear to ear every time they interacted. Locklyn’s inner monologue was a bit juvenile at times but that was my only issue. I had so much fun with this book and I’m so excited for the next one.

If I was 13 or 14 I would’ve enjoyed it more. It’s an easy read and some of the characters are interesting. I do think the lead character needs some character development, but I understand that she’s just a teenager. I give this a 3.9/5 because it was easy to read.

Let’s get this out of the way…she did say she’s not like other girls. I KNOW OK I KNOW! She actually said those words. PUT THE PITCH FORK AWAY…..I was still entertained.

There’s definitely some cringe worthy statements in here I’m not going to lie. Sometimes the way they spoke it was very clear they were teenagers. BUTTTTTT once the trials started I was locked in. I’m not usually a fan of love triangles either but again I was entertained. It had me rooting for a blonde man somehow. In fact I was rooting for a why choose by the end cause I like them both.

The trials were unique and had me gripped. I want to know so much more about Talon and the secrets he hides. Many of the things he said had me swooning. He thinks she’s perfect just the way she is. Plus Freckles is a cute nickname, what can I say. Did I guess the “twists”? Yes. BUT IT WAS FUN. I feel so torn between Talon and Becks, they both have such good moments and I don’t want either one to be hurt. I love protective men who can’t stand the thought of her being hurt.

I was a little confused about why everything went down at the end but again, this is all vibes. I’m here for a good time on this one. I liked the magic mixed in with the danger of the deadly trials and a jealous protective man does it for me every time. VIBING

Theory (spoiler)

.
Becks obviously isn’t dead (my jaw was dropped i can’t lie) but what if he ends up staying in the human world so he doesn’t have to be the dragon heir? 👀

I purchased and read the special edition version of Creatures of Chaos by Julie Hall. It's a breathtakingly gorgeous copy with lots of character art in multiple places (reverse dust jacket, endpapers, throughout the chapters, etc.), gilded sprayed edges, and the edges have two different character art images depending on how you slightly bend the edges.

I really liked this book. I was happy to see that this book did a good job of balancing the fantasy and romance. The storyline was really good and it had an amazing twist at the end that I didn't see coming. Julie Hall did a really good job with building this world that's centered around a school for magical beings and a competition event called Chaos. While the book has zero spice (which wasn't needed by the way), the romantic aspects were cute and the author did a good job of building up the tension of a "will they or won't they" experience.

There's two love interests and the author did a fantastic job of making you unsure of which guy the FMC will choose. Both guys seem genuinely into her, both don't seem to want her to change who she is, BUT one is more willing to acknowledge his interest (possible love) for her publicly while the other is not--while that seems so cut and dry, the author does a good job of creating all of these reasons for why it still isn't an easy choice. It genuinely makes me reminisce over the days of the Vampire Diaries TV show when Elena was constantly drawn to both Stefan and Damon. The quintessential golden boy vs. the bad boy (who has a heart of gold too). I'll definitely be reading the sequel.

This was such a fun read. I was so invested and found it hard to put down. It’s been awhile since YA has captured me so.

Lock, Becks and Talon were so fun to get to know. I liked the writing and the world building didn’t feel dumpy. We learn the world as we learn what our characters are up against.

It was fast paced and delivered in the reveals that left me wanting more. Looking forward to book 2.

Looking for a magical academy with a diverse cast of magical creature's,and an action-packed romantasy? Welcome to Nightlark academy where nothing is as it seems.⚔️

Creatures of Chaos by Julie Hall is an action-packed thriller romantasy story with unexpected plot twists that will keep you second guessing until the very end. From start to finish I was cheering for the fmc Locklyn who is an expert hand-to-hand combat fighter, resourceful, brave, and I would absolutely want to be her friend.✨️

Mrs.Hall definitely knows how to capture the readers attention with her amazing attention to detail, and her visually stunning world-building. The scenes in the story are very detailed, and provided smooth transitions throughout the entire plot.

The friendship between Locklyn, and Ensley is the literal definition of ride or die because there's nothing that they would not do for each other no matter the obstacles. Ensley is a true friend, and I respect how straightforward she is.

I loved the message that Mrs.Hall expressed throughout the story about learning to accept that you will always be enough, and to never feel like you have to change who you are.

The friends to lover's trope is skillfully applied in the story, and never felt rushed. Becks and Locklyn are a cute couple, and I hope that we see more of them in book two. There's another mmc Talon who is a mysteriously attractive bad boy,and the secrets he's hiding are very interesting.

Mrs.Hall is also the queen of plot twists especially with the one at the end of the story with the game master I was like what!?😱 The Chaos tournament challenges were very startling with lots of scary almost moments that had me on the edge of my seat especially the scary creature from the water cave scene.

Creatures of Chaos is perfect for reader's who like:
1.Found family
2.Diverse cast of magical creature's
3.Friends to lover's
4. Fmc who is a baddie that does not need magic, and is an expert hand- to-hand combat fighter.
5.Two mmc's one is a fierce dragon shifter, and the other is a mysterious bad boy that is hiding many secrets.

6. Rare ancient artifact weapon that has unimaginable power.

7.Loyal best friends who would do anything for each other.

8. Winner take all deadly tournament

9.Forbidden romance

Creatures Of Chaos by Julie Hall releases on October 24th, 2024.Definitely add this action-packed romantasy to your tbr you will not regret it.👏

Thank you Mrs.Hall for the opportunity to read your stunning book, and I look forward to reading book two.✨️

Chaos is a deadly underground competition where survival is the only rule. And winning is all that matters. I loved the challenges. Each one was so different and played to different strengths.

I am definitely team Talon. I loved watching their connection grow. In a weird way I am hoping this turns into a why chose but I don't think that will happen as both Talon and Becks made statements about not sharing.

Ummmmm........the last 10%!!! My jaw is on the ground. I did not see all of that coming!!!

Thank you Julie for having me on your hype team and for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

I was rooting for a specific MMC more than the other. The competition aspect was very entertaining to read! I was hooked the whole book. The magic system was written beautifully! This was quite the fun read! It felt nostalgic for me as it reminded me of Crave but still very different. It is a YA fantasy but honestly no matter my age I still love a good YA fantasy book with messy teenage characters. There is a magical academy, deadly trials (which gets me every time), a love triangle and super engaging world building! It took me a little bit to get into a first but once I did I was hooked - especially that last chaos trial and now I really want more! Would for sure recommend.

I've been struggling to find a YA series that can grip me and Creatures of Chaos has just grabbed me in a chokehold.
If you're a fan of magical academies, a mish mash of creatures ranging from dragons to vampires to Fae, friends to lovers, love triangles and deadly trials, this book is for you. I could absolutely picture this as a popular TV show or a movie, I loved the action. But beware, the ending will have you desperate for the next book just like I am.

Thoughts: 💭
Um WOW.. I’m not okay after that ending! 🤯 That cliff hanger?!?! I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS!!
This book may of started off slow but I’m a sucker for a book with trials and this one was definitely unique and entertaining!
This is YA!!! So keep that in mind before going into reading something that might automatically not be for you to begin with. So naturally it’s going to be a little cringey and lean more on the simplicity side in terms of writing, dialogue and characters.

What I loved: ♥️
I personally love YA books as they’re easy to follow and don’t make you think very hard. They make great books for when you have ✨chaos✨ in your life and just want a relaxing escape. This heavily delivered on that!

What I hated: 💔
My only complaint was the beginning took me a bit to get into. The plot, characters and the whole set up was slower but also I just wasn’t vibing with the book until 20% in HOWEVER once the trials began I couldn’t put my book down!! So this may be a slower/cringey start but just roll with it for a bit it does get better I promise!

Characters: 🚺🚹
Locklyn (no powers)- it’s so refreshing to see a FMC that’s powerless and not born with these extravagant powers. I loved that Julie Hall show cased that you don’t need powers to be powerful. 🤍
Becks (dragon shifter)- I’m not a fan not going to lie.. I’m 100% team Talon.
Talon (??)- 😍 YESSSSS I freaking love Talon! He’s dark, mysterious and witty and come on who actually falls for the blonde when there’s tall, dark and dreamy?!

dont get me wrong. I love a YA book, but this demographic is more fitting for teens who love romantasies and the lack of worldbuilding has me giving it a lower rating. still entertaining at times
