Summer's Winter

Rate this book
When Jeanine finally connects with film star Jamie Newkirk, the object of her obsession, will it be a dream come true? Or will she be pulled into his family's nightmare of secrets, control, and death?

At age ten, preacher's daughter Jeanine fell in love with young movie star Jamie Newkirk and the character he played--Danny Summer. Jeanine believed God Himself promised Jamie would be part of her life--that he would rescue her from boring rural Georgia. But eleven years later, she's graduating college and about to settle into the dreary nine-to-five life with no word from Jamie or God.

And then Jamie bursts into her life in an amazing way. There are plans to resurrect the Summer series of books and movies, and Jeanine is right in the middle of it all. Jamie seems to be falling for her, just as she'd dreamed. And yet...

She never expected all the dark undercurrents. Jamie is hiding out in Georgia following the suspicious death of his former girlfriend. And isn't it odd that he found his mother dead of a supposed suicide in that same house two years before, and that both women had the same strangely-shaped burn on their bodies? Jamie is obviously hiding things--about his family, about the deaths of his mother and girlfriend. The media and the public have declared him guilty. Jeanine longs to prove his innocence. Unless she can, Jamie's dark secrets may shatter her dreams, her faith--and her life.

ROBIN JOHNS GRANT  has been writing for most of her life. While waiting for her writing to pay off, she did some interesting things like being a secretary for private investigators, and some ordinary things like writing for university magazines and being a financial aid counselor. She also did a lot of crazy fan stuff and developed fascinations with books and movies like Harry Potter and Star Wars, which helped her dream up Jeanine and Jamie for Summer's Winter.

Robin now has her best day job ever as a college librarian, which keeps her young by allowing her to hang out with students.  She lives in Georgia with her wonderful husband Dave and formerly feral feline, Mini Pearl. In fact, she finds herself involved in a ridiculously large number of animal rescues and was shocked to become part owner of an abandoned pit bull puppy last fall. Robin is celebrating the release of her first novel,  Summer's Winter , about preacher’s daughter Jeanine and her obsession with troubled film star, Jamie. A Spanish novelist named, Carlos Ruiz Zafón, has quoted remarkably about "secrets" as:

“A secret's worth depends on the people from whom it must be kept.”

Robin Johns Grant is one such author who knows how to weave a bewitching tale filled with secrets in every page, that will leave her reader's minds in twists and knots. Her creation, Summer's Winter is not only a Christian book, but also has all the elements to make you sweat out in anticipation and curiosity, where you will find yourself surrounded by indefinite amount of secrets which are dark and sinister.

Synopsis:

Alas! Poor Jeanine. She has to go through so much trouble just to make peace with her heart's calling. It seems like a she has to pay a huge price just for loving Jamie. Jeanine stands out to be a perfect Christian girl, who is totally in love with the film star, Jamie. But Jeanine is not any fragile girl; instead she is bend to prove her boyfriend innocent. She is portrayed as a powerful yet subtle woman who has a dark edge in her demeanor. Jamie is just the opposite of Jeanine- fragile, lost and secretive. And reading about him will not only fill your head with clouds of doubt, but will also make you feel sorry for him. Together their chemistry is rocking and filled with passion, makes the plot more gripping.

The author's style of narration is quite articulate; she knows when to deliver those twists that will leave you more twisted with the mystery. From the first page itself, the book proves to be an engrossing read. Moreover with her psychologically flawed characters, it can mean only one thing the ride is going to be very intriguing one.

Easy to read, Summer's Winter is also complex enough to really pique your curiosity. This Christian novel keeps you turning the pages to find the answer to questions like, is helping out movie star, Jamie Newkirk, really Jeanine's God-given mission or a silly adolescent daydream. And will Jamie ever find freedom from his manipulative, dysfunctional family? Or was Jamie really involved in the death of his mother and girlfriend? Kirkus Review has deemed Robin Grant "a Christian author to watch," and this reader heartily agrees.

Love it!

Jamie, a child actor now adult, finds himself in trouble, and as always, surrounded by people, but terribly alone.
Jeanine has been an outcast by choice since she was six because no one ever met her idea of peer.
Somehow her childhood dream of meeting and befriending Jamie Newkirk happened, and life is very interesting.
Good story, so very well written, and artfully rendered so you are always wondering.

I love Grant’s way with words and her sense of story. It’s not breathless when it doesn’t need to be, and gradually sets up story in a way that’s a luscious down comforter and not a bumpy, worn blanket. Since reading Jordan's Shadow, I knew Summer's Winter would be just as good.

Young Adult fiction can cover a great deal of circumstances and settings, but the genre involves exploration of self, growth, and a lot angst getting there. Skillfully melding twists and romance, blurring the lines between bad guys and good, and identifying and taking responsibility for bad behavior without glorifying it, Grant has published a great story about a young lady with gifts on a sure path guided by the only One we can truly trust, and her obsession, a movie star from another continent portraying a beloved character in a series of motion pictures. While Jeanine may not truly believe that she’ll receive the longings of her heart, she has a firm foundation that the Giver of all good things has a plan for her.

Within the realm of believability, the movie star, Jamie, comes from a similar-enough background to feel guilt over actions he controls, as well as events that he cannot influence…or can he? It’s this sense of responsibility that bring Jamie and Jeanine together, yet keep them frustratingly apart.

Told in multiple points of view, Summer’s Winter is a story will keep readers of romantic young adult fiction turning pages. Set in contemporary America, the story has a genteel feel, despite the despair and drug use and less savory actions hinted at behind the scenes. The characters are rich and multi-layered, adding a satisfactory denseness to the beautiful settings and even the less than beautiful events. Star-crossed lovers? Sure, but emotionally satisfying and with just enough questions left over that make me drool for a sequel.

Summer's Winter is a sweet Christian romance with a hint of intrigue. I enjoyed reading this. Throughout a good portion of the book, I had a smile on my face and even chuckled a time or two. There were even times when I myself just wanted to reach into the pages and give Jamie a hug, bless his heart! It wasn't what some may say as "overly preachy" (in my opinion) nor was it like others where they just went to church (and that was all that was said about Christianity/God). It had just the right amount. The characters were well done (absolutely loved Jeannie's father!) and the pace was steady, not rushed nor too slow. I recommend this read to anyone who enjoys Christian romance with a touch of mystery! Will be looking for more from this author! :)

When I saw Summer’s Winter reduced to 99 cents on Kindle, I couldn’t help myself…
But now that’s I’ve read it… I would pay at least $20 for a paper copy. It is up there as one of my favourite all time reads… one that I want to keep on my shelf to talk to friends about.
Robin Johns Grant has woven the perfect amount of tension, curiosity, suspense and romantic threads throughout her novel. The slight insights in the beginning drew me in completely to a place where I just had to keep reading. The characters quickly become my friends. People I cared deeply about, and wanted to know instantly where their lives ended.
So much to say as … I could not put this novel down!
A New Adult college tale where childhood dreams create a real life roller coaster ride.

The story of Jeannie and Jamie is a very different one.

A movie star and a somewhat preacher's daughter. Two very different people trying to find a place where they can find solace...he needs to find himself before he can love anyone. She needs to let go of a little girls fantasy. Their story is amazing of how they finally come together. It will make you smile and your sing!!!!!

I chose this book because the plot was God inspired, but I found out that I wasn't crazy about the subject matter. However the book was interesting and kept me turning the pages and it actually got really exciting towards the end and I could not put it down until I finished it. I was satisfied with the story's completion of God's purpose in it.

Interesting, and captivating plot if a little far fetched. There was a Christian theme, but I feel it lacked substance , and the idea of following God's will more verging on what Jeanine wanted herself. Would God really push us into close relationships with unbelievers ?

Summer's Winter by Robin Johns Grant is a delightful read as she takes you into the world of celebrity and diehard fans.

Jeanine has been in love with movie star Jamie Newkirk since she was a little girl. While her father and mother worry about her obsession and do everything they can think of to dissuade her, Jamie is never far from her thoughts. Her one prayer to God from childhood has been to meet Jamie.

Jamie Newkirk has had trouble following him it seems all his life. First his mother dies of a suicide, then his former girlfriend Paula, dies of a drug overdose. Now rumours are circulating as he takes responsibility for her death. Sent to do community service in Southern Georgia, he finally meets his number one fan Jeanine. What happens next is anyone's guess.

This is an excellent novel with just enough romance and intrigue to keep you reading to the end. The plot twists are very well done and the character development was superb. Robin Johns Grant is an author to keep your eye on!

I give this book 5/5 stars!

In SUMMER'S WINTER, author Robin Johns Grant weaves a story about two people, Jamie and Jeanine, who come from different backgrounds and differing beliefs. She is the daughter of a pastor who dreams of being a playwrite while he, raised in the self indulgent society of Hollywood, is an actor and has been since childhood. Intrigue surrounds the budding friendship whose only common thread is the character that Jamie has acted since he was a boy in the series "Summer". With believable characters, SUMMER'S WINTER will keep the reader turning pages looking for the happy ending that appears to be illusive. A great read.
