When Susan was in high school, she never really liked to read, but when she was a child she did. Go figure. It wasn’t until after she graduated that she caught the reading bug. Susan had to go to a book store to sell off her text books and a particular book caught her eye. This book stood out from the other second-hand books because it had a pink cover. It was only a couple of dollars, so she thought, “Why not?” But she couldn't quite bring herself to read her bargain book. It had a pink cover!

Then, after it tormented her for three weeks, she finally picked it up and... could not put it down. Susan finished it in two days!

After Google-ing the author and found that she’d written a heap of books for Harlequin Mills & Boon as well as Single Titles. So of course Susan had to buy all her other books! And when she realised that there were other Mills & Boon authors out there, She just had to search out their books, too. And she loved them!

Susan got a ton of inspiration from those books. But the most important thing she realized was that she wanted to write those books, too. She wanted to be a Paranormal author! Because let's face it, who doesn't like things that go bump in the night?

Another exciting work from the innovative Susan Child.
When Melissa meets the dark and sexy David at his nightclub she doesn't expect to fall for him. After all, there are weird rumours about this place and she's just here to enjoy a good night with her friend. Except David has other plans. He's attracted to Melissa and thinks she'll do nicely for a one-night stand. He doesn't expect to fall for her and plunge her life into peril.

A compelling read right to the end.

Smash

Smash was a solid introduction into the vampire world as seen through the imagination of Susan Child.

Though the story is classed as a paranormal romance because of the vampiric element. Personally, I would have enjoyed a bit more on that score. The vampires felt a bit too human for me. Part of the fantastical elements of a paranormal story is that paranormals can do feats beyond what humans can. I just never felt the vampires were anything more than humans with pointy teeth.

The vampires in this story are an abusive lot, too. David's father is abusive, as was his mother's father. We are used to seeing vampires as vicious predators but these vamps came off as bullies and wholly unlikable. I suppose that was the Child's point in expressing the characters that way -- to get the readers to hate them, and you will.

Also, the situation with David and his father was never resolved. There was a fight and then nothing until someone else dispatched him. It was all rather anticlimactic, especially since David solemnly vowed to kill him.

The sequencing of the story is also a bit awkward. One page has the characters one place and they are someplace else a day or two away on the next page with no noticeable transition to that point.

Something I would have liked to have known but the story didn't convey is why Mel's conversion happened overnight, without her knowing it, but David's took five years. David surprised her with informing her about her vampiric state and pregnancy at the same time. It was a bit of information overload because everything was so compressed.

Now I know all of this commentary sounds as if I hated the book. I actually did not. The overall premise of the story was solid and I liked the direction Child was taking it in. I would have just enjoyed it a bit more if the story was a bit more cohesive and the flow more even. I did like the the setup for the next story with David's sister, Stacey. I'm a hard reviewer so these issues may solely be my own because usually book 1's in a series are hit or miss for me in a lot of instances. I'm sure book 2 will be even better and I will definitely add it to my TBR.

Smash begins as a quirky story, however develops into a very well written Vampa story!

Some parts could be left more to the imagination however its a great little winner this one. Based around I think vampire mating rituals, and you'd have to say the prince of a vampire coven David that actually gets hurt. More realistic than most vampa books! Also an instant attraction to Melissa, his mate in the form of a human. Also the King(his father), a nasty piece of work! Seriously the man needs to be staked!!

I love the characters in this book, and that the BFFs don't actually hook up in this story. I also like that the story is very straight to the point. There is no fluff or fill in writing. It flows well, and has a certain draw to it in regards to the character interaction.

I think Susan Child has the potential to be a very awesome Vampa writer. Onwards and Upwards ma'am!!

Sexy and intriguing. Susan takes her reader into a world of vampires and humans who intermingle in the hit club, Smash.
David is the son of the King of Vampires who happens to stumble upon the human Mel. There’s a strange pull to the human, something he never would have imagined could happen with a human.
Susan keeps the reader guessing for more with a page-turning paranormal beauty!

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Melissa and John have been best friends for a very long time. John has come to a point in his life where he had kind of rather stayed at home and not get out. But Melissa has other plans she is not going to let him sit behind closed doors and shut the world out. She is determined to help her friend John be happy. So Melissa talks him into going with her to this night club called Smash. Smash is not your ordinary club. You know where you go out have a few drinks, dance and maybe meet someone new. Oh you will probably meet someone new but more than likely you won't remember it when you leave.

While Melissa and John are sitting in their booth talking and sipping on their drinks, Melissa is casually starts checking out all the men in the place when she makes eye contact when this one dude that shoots her temperature up about fifty or sixty degrees. He is one good looking, tongue brain slapping, out of this world, rock my boat dude. But when Melissa turns to look at him again he is no longer sitting at the bar and Melissa feels her heart plummet right down to her feet.

But Melissa is not the only one whose body temperature is on the rise so his the dude that she sees. Oh yeah David's world is about to be rocked as well. David sees Melissa and wants her badly. While he is standing off in the shadows watching her talking with her friend wondering who he is if he is her boyfriend or what he is to her David is thinking that he wants a one night stand with this beautiful woman sitting before his eyes.

David wants a little more than a one night stand with this woman oh yeah he wants to drink her blood. Yes David is a vampire and is hooked on human blood like humans get hooked on alcohol or food. His addiction is more like when a human is hooked on food than alcohol. David needs the blood to survive but he also just has this craving that is so strong that sometimes he can't control it and he ends up killing the human that is drinking from. But later on that night David runs into Melissa and finds that someone has drugged her so he takes her home with him. He realizes that what he feels for her is like nothing he has ever felt before and is not sure that a one night stand is going to do the trick anymore.

I loved reading Smash and going along on each and every characters journey with them. Sometimes I would laugh with them because they were so happy and then sometimes I would cry with them when things would go sour for them. I wanted to get inside the book with them and help them out, keep them safe from the bad people in the world. I loved how David felt about his mother and his sister Sage. David would have given his life for his mother, sister and Melissa. If you love reading about vampires then Smash is not the book to let slip out of your hands. Pick up your copy today! You will not regret it in the least.

For a paranormal novel about vampires, I felt that it could have been a lot better, especially compared to other vampire novels already out there in the market.

Melissa and John are human best friends who visit a nightclub called Smash to celebrate John’s birthday. There they meet David and Stacey, who are vampire siblings, and whose father is king. David and Melissa are instantly drawn to one another, as are Stacey and John. After spending one night together, David erases Melissa’s memory of their one night, however, it fails to work and Mel remembers David perfectly when she sees him, again. David’s father is a cruel vampire and a tyrant, and he kidnaps both Mel and John in a bid to make David bend to his will, and force him to mate with another vampire from another family. David and Stacey finally decide to fight back.

For a vampire story, it felt too light. I think it needed to be a bit darker and we needed more information upfront about the vampire family and species, and how they came into being. I also felt that the turning of Melissa was glossed over too much - one day she was human and the next she was a vampire. The ending was a bit rushed. Without giving the ending away, I think it could have been better in terms of how it came about.

This author is relatively new and still working on her craft. I hope to see more depth of story and more character development in future novels. The story was told in the third person, so the focus of the POV was flitting back and forth with no clearly defined 'voices', making it harder to know whose point we were seeing, and also harder to get a deeper connection with the characters.

Overall, it was quite lightweight when it could have been so much more.

This is the first Susan Child book I've read and I will certainly be reading more. Generally, paranormal is not a genre of interest to me with this actually being my first paranormal book apart from the Twilight series.

Susan has a nice writing style, the characters, David and Mel in particular were sweet and easy to fall in love with. The story flowed well, the sex scenes were hot and the chemistry was intense from the moment David & Mel laid eyes on each other.

In parts I felt the story could have been expanded, and in places the characters could have displayed more emotion. There was definitely cause for Mel to experience emotions like confusion, fear, anxiety especially having learned that vampires truly exist and she had in fallen in love and mated with one. I thought this aspect of the story could have been explored in greater depth BUT, it didn't take away from the story at all!

I believe the story was intended to be a sweet romance focused on love and loyalty, more so than the paranormal and I would say it was beautifully presented. I'm now about to read Susan's first published book, More Than Friends.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!
When Melissa drags her friend John to the hot, new club Smash, she had no idea she'd meet anyone, let alone a vampire. David is a hot, sexy vampire. He sees Melissa across the room and is drawn to her. He takes her to hotel where they spend hours worshipping one another. Afterwards, David must wipe her memory and go on his way. Oddly, when Melissa wakes, she remembers everything and wants to see David again. David feels the need to see her again but soon realizes that she & her friend have been abducted by his father, the vampire king. Will David be able to save them from his father's clutches? Has he truly fallen for Melissa? Is she his true mate? This is an awesome book by Susan Child. I was given this book in exchange for my honest review. I love a good vampire story and this is one of the best books I've read to date. You don't want to miss out on David and Melissa's story. Get your copy of Smash today.

One superb read......

This is an addictive tale about vampiric David and human Melissa - and it's brilliant!!
Melissa is out with her friend John to celebrate his birthday, they're at Smash a new night club. She instantly spots David and is drawn to him, as he is to her.
But David being a vampire causes problems - he cannot mate with a human - a fact his father reminds him of.
But David cannot stay away!!!
Will David's relationship with Melissa harm her??
Can David keep the woman he loves???
Will Melissa remain with a man who is not as he appears??
Susan Child's entrance into the world of the paranormal is brilliant. She has written a wonderful book that has the beginnings of a superb series.
BRAVO Susan!!!!
I look forward to the next installment..

I received a copy of Smash for a honest review..

Smash is a good book which showcases Susan's incredible potential as a writer. I loved the storyline - Vamp finding his mate who just so happens to be human - rival Vamps competing for number 1 spot and a bastard of a father who i just wanted to go Buffy the friggin vampire slayer on his ass!

The flow of the book was ok, I just found it abit choppy in places and in some places of the book, I did have to go back and reread to make sure I was understanding it right, but other then that it was a enjoyable read.

Her descriptions in the sex scenes were spot on as well - All in all I'm happy that i read it.. Onwards and upwards my girl, onwards and upwards !

In the first book I’ve read by Susan Child, I had a great time reading this original take on vampire/human romance.

I loved the rate of which the book progressed and I really enjoyed the interaction between all of the characters. I read a lot of paranormal, and this was a refreshingly different way of using vampires.

Including the action and family feuds were the perfect touch in this steamy romance! If there were one thing I had to pick out that I didn’t particularly like, It would be how easily the female lead accepted things that were outside of her norm. Even with that though it was a great read! I also hope Susan brings us more of the characters from Smash in future work.

*I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.

This is a short and enjoyable paranormal romance. David is a vampire whose father is the king of vampires who rules with an iron fist. David is instantly attracted to Melissa, a human. David knows nothing can come of it but finds he is unable to forget her. David is such a compassionate and protective man who has grown up in a family where his father terrorized them, especially his mother. David vows to protect Melissa as well. This tale is centered more on David and I found myself drawn into his life. It felt a little rushed at times but I still enjoyed reading it. It has romance, suspense and vampires!

I was given Smash by Susan Child for an honest review. I give this book 4 stars. Mel and David have a wonderful night together but when David sees Mel again he realizes that she still remembers him. She isn’t supposed to remember him. David has to deal with an abusive father and fight for the woman that he loves. I would love for the story to have been a little longer so the ending didn’t feel so rushed, but I loved the story! I loved how Mel took it in stride that she fell in love with a vampire. This is a book that you will enjoy and I recommend.

This is a wonderful story. It's a great vampire book. Love the characters and the storyline. Very different than your typical vampire book. David is a vampire and Melissa is a human but when she enters the club he is attuned to her like he found his mate. After spending the night with her her wipes her memory at least he thinks so. His father finds out and all hell breaks loose. Will David find Melissa in time to save her? Will she be ok with finding out he's a vampire? A must read book.

I loved the story line and premise of the book. It delved into the world of vampires a little bit the main focus was on David and his mate. I loved their at first sight attraction and draw to one another. I do wish that there was more paranormal and vampirism in the book. That's a major draw for me. But otherwise I think the writer did a great job with the book, scenes and details.

Smash is a highly entertaining and deeply moving journey that will take you by storm and never let go. The paranormal aspect drew me in like a moth to the flame, but it was the amazing and bold characters and the intriguing storyline that held me utterly captive. There is a beautifully raw and absolutely mesmerizing talent that will leave you both wanting more and completely satisfied.

David has lived a full and relatively satisfying life until a deep craving begins to make itself known. This craving comes naturally to those like himself. He desires above all to find and claim his mate. He is ready to lay aside his empty, carefree life and bask in the deeper meaning and fulfillment that comes with the cherished bond of one’s mate. Melissa enjoys her relatively simple yet satisfying life. She has a best friend that she can count on no matter what and she is determined to make the best of things. In an attempt to cheer her best friend up on his birthday, she drags him to a nightclub and finds that her life is quickly turned upside down. Will David find that which he desperately seeks, and will Melissa reclaim her life before it’s too late?

I found the characters in this book to be wonderfully entertaining and beautifully crafted. The twist to the paranormal storyline was very enjoyable and I couldn’t get enough. I love when someone takes an old story and makes even more compelling with new and unique information. Knowing more about the history of the Lore they followed would have been even better. The relationship among the characters was absolutely fascinating, and I would have loved to have seen more of that revealed. It’s almost scary how quickly this story wrapped itself around my heart. I didn’t want to let go of the characters, and I hope that we hear more from them in the future.

Susan Child has an astounding talent that I see only getting better and better as time goes on. There is an incredible amount of talent that is just bursting at the seems to be released. This is one author that you need to keep an eye on. I see great things for her in the near future as her talent continues to grow and develop into what I believe it is meant to become.

This is not only my first Susan Child book but it is also my first paranormal book. (I never even read twilight)
I loved the characters. David and Mel were so easy to fall in love with. The chemistry between them two was scorching from the moment they laid eyes on one another. David has found his mate with Mel but the only issue is that she is human and his father the King of Vampires is a complete bastard.
I think this story flowed really well. With this being my first paranormal there were sections that I did have to re-read but I believe that is because I’m not familiar with these books but would most definitely read more of them as this one has kind of turned me on to them. Cannot wait to see what else Susan has in store in the future.

This story is about the forbidden love between a vampire David and a human Melissa. It all starts when Melissa goes out with her best friend to a club. Little did she know she would meet her soulmate that night. David thinks he it is simply lust and that one night will quench his thirst. He is forced to step in when he realizes someone has drugged her. They have to confront David's dad and his laws in order to be together. I loved this story. It had action, suspense and steamy scenes. I would definitely like to read more of this author's stories.

I give this a 3 1/2 stars. I love paranormal and this was a good story line, but I felt the story was a bit rushed. I love the characters, but would have liked to get to know them better. It just felt like it went from a-z without enough storyline to get you there. Would have loved to see a final encounter between David and his father. Overall a great story with really good characters, I just wanted more.
