Earth's magic was stolen. She's taking it back. All Sierra Walker has ever wanted is magic, but the powerful mage who trained her as a child betrayed her, sending her back from a world full of magic to modern-day Seattle. So when he comes to her a decade later, Sierra glimpses an opportunity:
She steals his wand, and with it, she begins to steal back magic—for everyone.
In magical combat Sierra's a force to be reckoned with, but she's still on her own, her access to magic handicapped, with an entire world of mages now trying their best to kill her rather than share power. So when Nariel, a dangerous demon lord, offers his assistance, she can't say no. But she also knows better than to trust her life, and her magic, to anyone else ever again—no matter how he ignites a part of her she'd thought long lost.
But as they race around the world to bring magic back while fighting for their lives, Sierra realizes there may now be two things she can't bear to lose.
Diamond Universe: Sierra Walker is a fast-paced, action-packed urban romantasy series spanning the modern world and also other worlds full of magic, with a shadow-wielding demon boyfriend and a heroine who never quits no matter the odds and just goes harder as they fight to change the universe for everyone. Expect the heat level to escalate dramatically in each book.

I'm so torn about this book 🤨 First of all this is book 1 of 3 in a fantasy series.
I loved the magical element, the way the author imagined the connections between our world and other magical worlds, the whole angel element was also very peculiar... I loved the fact that the book began straight into action. I also loved the two main characters and the chemistry between them. 🖤
BUT, there is a huge but. ⤵️ The storytelling did not deliver. It is an interesting story narrated in a boring way. Or better, the narration part is what's missing. I suppose this writing style could work in a steamy romance with actions, actions, actions. But if I need to get involved into a new fantastical world I find that I do need a bit of background; also, poetical writing could work wonderfully. But a fantasy book cannot be all facts and action.
All this said I find myself struggling now because I do want to know what happens next but I don't know if I'm up to this type of writing again... 😬

I saw the beautiful cover and I just had to request this 😍 then read the plot and the magical world really intrigued me✨
// Thank you to Netgalley, Casey Blair and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange of my honest opinion //
As a first book in a series, Take Back Magic had a lot of potential. I was drawn in by the beautiful cover and although the writing style wasn't really for me, I did enjoy the plot and the relationships being formed between the characters.
Sierra is a great FMC, she's strong, competent, and she knows what she wants, and exactly how to get it. Nariel is Sierra's opposite, he's more than happy to lurk in the shadows and watch as Sierra fight's for what she wants. The dynamics between them were so fun - their banter was top tier, and their relationship (although on the quieter emotional side) was great to read about.
I will definitely be reading on to continue this series when I get a chance.
This book was fun, and the plot had a tonne of potential! I didn't vibe very well with the writing style, but the plot was really interesting and the cover is divine! This book had a fantastic FMC who I was rooting for the whole time, and could not wait to see what she did next throughout the storyline. The pacing was well done, and the chemistry between the characters were probably my favourite part of this book!
This book was an absolutely amazing read, I loved every minute of it! I couldn't put it down. Thank you, @caseylblair, for giving me the opportunity to read this masterpiece!
Sierra is one of the best fmc I've ever seen. She's a hyper-competent heroine who has absolutely zero chill about fighting head-on against the systems that would keep her down, and I respect her for it! She knows what she wants, and she's not afraid to do anything to get it. She's stubborn and likes to do things on her own, which can be frustrating to those who want to help her, but that flaw makes her more relatable.
Nariel is the perfect love interest for Sierra. I mean, you can't really beat a demon love interest who's hands down the most beautiful guy ever. It's not just his looks that are perfect, though. The way he stands back and lets her do her thing whilst quietly watching from the shadows is also peek boyfriend behaviour.
The chemistry between them can be felt, but it's quiet, and neither of them really acknowledge it out loud, but the silences between them speak a thousand words. The banter between the two is also to die for and makes you wish for it yourself. I can't wait to see how their relationship develops throughout the next few books!

I have not read a fantasy book in so long that I felt that I was transported to a new world.
The world building of the book was so fascinating to see especially with how the world is broken into two different ways. It honestly got me thinking of which side I would choose if I was in the book.
The main character Sierra is such a badass making it her mission to take in a task that no one has accomplished or even attempted in the book. Her thought process was such a nice take to read especially since her reasonings were not only for herself but for everyone as well. I immediately loved how she took charge from the beginning and didn't let anyone get in her way or detear her from her goal.
Nariel is an equal force to be reckon with. His powers of manipulating shadows is something that I had only ever seen on another book and for him to have it made me like him so much as a character more than before. His mentality is the same as Sierras which makes their banters and chemistry amazing.
The chemistry between both characters was something that you can't miss. I loved every second of their interactions that I time I couldn't help but laugh at how cute or funny it was. Other times I was left in awe. Love how their chemistry mainly forced due to their similar goals and wants for the world and themselves rather than it just being plainly on attraction (though theirs nothing wrong with that).
The book was fast paced but in a very good way. You weren't left with too many questions and there wasn't a lot of holes in the story so it wasn't confusing to follow along. There was also a lot of action within the book that was writtent so good that it was easy to imagine like a movie playing in my own head.
I loved it so much! Can't wait to read more from the author!
This book starts with a bang! The FMC, Sierra, is ready to fight for taking back magic in her life, even fighting against her old teacher, the Grand Magus. He betrayed her years ago and now she’s ready for a fight.
Take Back Magic is the first book in a series, this gives me hope because in this book I’ve struggled a bit in some points to understand what was happening. The world building is a bit complicated and is explained slowly, I would liked to read a few more details at the beginning to get a clearer idea.
The FMC is a mage without her magic anymore, when she was just a child she was brought in a world full of magic, shs was trained and then sent back to her “non magical” world, Low Earth.
But Sierra is very determined to get her magic back and she’s ready to fight for it! She’s ready to take back Magic in Low Earth no matter the consequences.
The MMC, Nariel, is a fallen angel who is ready to do anything to help her. From the beginning between Sierra and Nariel there is a strong bond that page after page gets more intense.
This book is a journey around the world, a book full of twists and turns between magicians.
This story has great potential and as I said before Take Back Magic is the first book in a series, it gives me hope that going forward it will improve more and more. Looking forward to read the second one and see how this story ends.
⭐️⭐️⭐️,7/5
Thank you mtmc tours and Casey Blair for the opportunity to read this book and the copy.
✨𝐵𝑜𝑜𝓀 𝑅𝑒𝓋𝒾𝑒𝓌✨ 📖Take Back Magic (Diamond Universe: Sierra Walker Book 1)
Sierra has been relegated to live in Low Earth, magicless and jaded by the betrayal of her mentor. When she finally gets the chance to take back her magic, she resolves to give magic back to all, no matter the consequences. She didn’t think she’d ever get the chance but she also never thought about what she had to lose…
The world building was well developed and easy to grasp. I loved the magic system and urban settings in this story. Sierra is an absolute BA with her brilliant mind and strong convictions. Her connection with this mysterious shadow daddy with wings has me giddy and so eager to see what happens next!
Take Back Magic is a fast-paced, modern Romantasy with an inspired blend of quirky characters, fun banter, and thrilling magic.
Huge thanks to the author and RR Book Tours for the review copy. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Loved it! Fast paced and thrilling. From the start the story sucked me in and I was hooked. I really loved the concept with magic, angels, demons, and spirits. It was intriguing and I can’t wait to see more.
Sierra, ooh she was a total you know what woman! Fierce, independent, and not afraid to go after what she wants. I enjoyed her character and loved the changes she underwent throughout the story.
Then there’s Nariel… I totally loved him! Talk, dark, handsome, shadow daddy, I mean what more could you ask for? He was also so supportive and mysterious of course. I really look forward to learning more about him.
Their relationship was fun and sweet. I can’t wait to see it develop further.
Need more reasons to read, then how about; action packed, urban fantasy, magical battles, shadow daddy, demon MMC, fierce wizard FMC, slow burn sweet romance, no spice yet, and so much more!

Intriguing plot but it did not keep my attention.
We start off quite strong, right in the middle of it, with a lot of information dumped on us. A lot of characters as well. The world is intriguing, so is the magic system. The main character’s goals are unusual, in a good way.
However, it read really obvious, it didn’t grab my interest. I’m sure this book could be amazing for another reader, it was just not for me.

This was good - but not as good as The Sundered Realms (also the first in a new series by Ms. Blair). I know enough about this series to know that eventually it will include a romantic element, but that is basically only foreshadowed here. I think my real problem with this one, and why I liked The Sundered Realms better is that there's no world context. We don't need world building, per se, as this is a slightly alternative version of our own world, but the complete lack of logistics or practicalities kept jolting me out of the story. With Blair's other works, world building abounds and is well done, but here it feels like because she didn't have to do that, she also didn't do anything to replace it.
That being said I will certainly read the next one.
Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing Metgalley Co-op for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a short read that I was excited about after reading what it entailed. A girl trying to take back magic after it was stolen from her world? Yes! Sign me up. I'm all about girl power! But by 20% in, I was left extremely confused. I couldn't tell if it was me or the writing style but I spent a lot of time re-reading sentences to make sense of them. As I continued on, I realized it was the writing style. This was such a fun and interesting concept, but it truly fell flat because it was difficult to read and because of that it came off very cringe like. I truly feel like if it could be re-edited, this would be a fun read to pull readers into continuing the story. Unfortunately, I will not be reading the next book.
DNF for me unfortunately. No hate, just not my kinda book & didn’t find myself wanting to pick it up! I’ll maybe return to it in the future as the premise is interesting.
Sierra Walker was once a student of a powerful mage who betrayed her after 10 years, stealing her magic. All Sierra wants in her magic back, and when the mage returns a decade later to ask for her help, she sees her opportunity to take back magic not just for herself, but for the world.
⭐️⭐️
Thank you to the author for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review. While I thought this plot was a very interesting concept, I found the pacing was not quite right for me. We were thrown straight into the story, with a lot of information and action in the first few pages of the book.
The magic system and world building is very cool, however I feel we weren't given much explanation or exposition in terms of how the world worked. I did struggle to get into this book, and I think the writing style wasn't quite for me personally which may be part of the reason I didn't enjoy this book as much as I expected to based on the plot and tropes.
This book is based on a very cool concept and I do like the plot, but unfortunately I just struggled to connect with the writing and characters.
So far, I have loved all of Casey Blair's books and this was no exception. I love that the book has so many well-defined characters. The heroine is a strong, smart woman who wants to change the world for everyone, no matter the cost to herself. The hero also has a world to change and is willing to work with her. He is strong enough to let her make her own decisions and stand for herself. They have a great relationship. I like that the "take back magic" part of the trilogy was resolved in this book. Now I'm looking forward to seeing Sierra take back her demon in the next book. I definitely like the characters enough to keep reading.
I received an ARC from the author, but my opinions are my own.
I loved this story and was looking forward to the ending! but that didn't go as expected.. it was even better and i am hooked! fair warning you will want to read the 2nd book right away so be prepared, lol. I adore Nariel and how he quietly supports Sierra. At first it's that "i don't trust she will do what she says" kinda way but that quickly changes to "she's got this and i'll just fill in the gaps as needed". he give off the himbo "that's my wife" energy and i really hope that it continues through out the series. And i really hope Sierra gets some therapy, some one did a number on her and her self-awareness... ma'am you are a good person, please realize that soon.
The author generously provided an ARC of this book free in exchange for an honest review.
I read Take Back Magic after absolutely loving Ms Blair's Tea Princess Chronicles, and while I did enjoy this story (enough to give it a four-star rating), I missed the found family and strong female friendships that were so much a feature of the Tea Princess Chronicles. Still, it's a different series, so perhaps I should judge it on its own merits, instead of comparing it.
So. The two things I *most* enjoyed about Take Back Magic were the world-building and the interactions between the two protagonists: Sierra and Nariel. There was all the delicious banter my snarky heart could want, and I found the idea of the four-world diamond made of Bright/Dark/High/Low Earths fascinating. I hope we'll develop on the latter in later books. Also, the progression of the gradual, slow-burn romantic thread was lovely.
What didn't work so well for me was... well, I know Sierra's been described as 'hyper-competent', but honestly, that wasn't the vibe I got from her. She wasn't *incompetent* by any stretch, but it was more a case of her being hyper-powerful - much more than anyone else, and we didn't have any sense of WHY that was the case.
Beyond that, the huge amount of power she could - and did - draw on meant there never really seemed to be any doubt that she'd triumph over whoever she was fighting in any given scene. Even when she briefly doubted herself or found herself on the back foot for a paragraph or two in the middle of a fight, all the evidence was that *of course* she'd immediately pull something else out of her hat and come out on top. So as a result, while there were a lot of action scenes with magic battles, there wasn't much in the way of real tension until right at the very end (and even for that, we know she'll come out on top in the next book).
In fact, in some ways, this book feels like the urban fantasy equivalent of my current favourite low-angst genre: fluffy shifter romances - a safe, known-quantity of a story where you know pretty much exactly what's going to happen from the get-go, and you just read it because you enjoy hanging out with the characters. And because I absolutely DID enjoy hanging out with the characters, I'm looking forward to seeing where things go from here in Book 2 when that comes out.
I was very excited to read Take Back Magic because the idea of living in basically an adjacent Earth that is essentially banned from magic and a heroine who wants to bring it all back had me intrigued. Sierra tutored under grand magus Evram until one day he decided to send her back to normal Earth where she wouldn't have access to magic for years. In that time she's come up with a plan to not only bring magic back but make it accessible to everyone regardless of socio-economic class. I can't remember the exact reason why but Evram seeks her out to solve a problem he can't which allows her to execute her plan. After this interaction she ends up gaining a shadow in Nariel who's interests align/rely on Sierra and her plans. He ends up tagging along and assisting her in her mission and along the way they grow close.
I enjoyed the fact that Sierra is very smart. There are moments in the story where you're inside her head weighing the pros and cons and analyzing situations and how to to solve them. If she needed a resume in her world, planning and problem solving would be top of the list. Nariel on the other hand is also incredibly intelligent but he's a giant cinnamon roll. I mentioned he was Sierra's shadow and thats truly what it was. He let her make decisions and supported her every step of the way. Sometimes he would intervene but he would explain things to Sierra in a very comprehensive way and, because he's a hundreds of years old demon, he had a few nuggets of wisdom here and there but he was consistently amazed and in awe of Sierra and it was absolutely adorable. For my romance girlies, nothing happens in this book outside of a few longing stares but the chemistry is bubbling.
The story definitely ends on a cliffhanger. It's not crazy explosive but it definitely leaves you with enough questions that I'm glad Book 2 is out because I was able to start reading it right away. Looking to see what the stakes will be in Book 2 and hoping the romance becomes a bit more developed.
Action packed modern-day fantasy adventure with a winged fallen angel shadow daddy, a bad a$$ and intelligent FMC, epic battles, mate bonds, magic, wizards and all the banter!! Easy and exciting to read, this was a somewhat quick read which I finished in a few hours.
This story follows Sierra, who is essentially sent to an earth where she wouldn’t have access to her magic after the mage who trained her since childhood, betrays her in the worst way. Then literally seemingly out of the blue, this mage shows up with a request for her to help him with a magical issue. In a turn of events, and fair play if I might add, she takes his wand and becomes a force to be reckoned with, she begins to take back the magic that was stolen from her. With the entire magical community trying to kill her, Nariel, a lethal demon prince, offers his assistance. Although she accepts his help, reluctantly, she knows that she shouldn’t fully trust anyone but herself. After some time together, the two rely on each other and soon he learns that she can’t live without her magic and this new bond she has forged, she will do anything to protect it.
I appreciated the fact that the FMC was not only a strong and determined woman but intelligent. So often FMCs are stuck being one or the other, but this author found a way to make Sierra both. Same goes for Nariel, he was a huge teddy bear but was also intelligent. He allowed Sierra to explore and make decisions on her own while being supportive and able to catch her if she fell or defend her with lethal intent should the occasion arise.
Take Back Magic is an alternate-worlds modern fantasy with an ultra-competent heroine who Has A Plan, and a supportive hero with his own secrets and plans. In this universe, the flow of magic is controlled by High Earth magi who basically steal more than their share from Low Earth (our Earth).
Wizards born on Low Earth are given minimal magic training (to keep from...exploding?) and then sent back to Low Earth, where there is only a slight trickle of magic available. Our heroine was given extra training and is very good at magical battles, but what she's most competent at is seeing through the bullshit of the powers-that-be.
Dropped back on an Earth with very little magic available, she's spent her time planning and waiting for a chance to take back control of Low Earth's inherent magic. And that chance is now.
This book is very fast-paced. It reads quickly enough that I went looking to see if it was technically a novella. At around 60K words (207 Kindle "estimated" pages), no, it isn't, although it is pretty short for a novel. There isn't much worldbuilding, but that's because it's basically set in our world. I read it in an afternoon and enjoyed the experience.
This book ends on what is very much a cliffhanger. The only reason I'm not cranky about that is because this series is a rapid-release, and the sequel is scheduled to be released next month (October 15, 2024).
Mages, Wizards, and a beautiful fallen angel all in one romantasy - you know I had to read it! Sierra Walker is on a mission to reclaim the magic that was stolen from her and most definitely not fall for her fallen angel prince partner in crime on his own mission to save his people….
The FMC is a strong, super intelligent, and fiercely independent character who can quite literally take on worlds. The MMC is charming, equally intelligent, and most definitely a lethal cinnamon roll. They are both a little broken but together nothing can stop them. Loved the chemistry and banter between them which is done in such a way it doesn’t feel insta-love but also not quite slow-burn either - for once it’s kinda in the middle. Given the book is short I think the balance is done well.
This book packs in a lot in under 300 pages and I loved how you were just thrown into it from the start and you just had to go with the flow and pick up information as you go along! if you like a book to take time world-building and explaining magic systems this is probably not for you.
I’m so happy the entire trilogy is already completed and cannot wait to see how these two navigate through the challenges that are laid out at the end of this book!
Casey Blair you are the master wizard for writing such a fun and captivating book. I’m so grateful I got the opportunity to read courtesy of an eARC provided by Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op!
Take Back Magic di @caseyblair che ringrazio per la collaborazione . ✨"Because the one thing this place doesn't gave is magic in the air" . If I want magic - and it is the only thing I have ever wanted - I will have to take it" . 💜"You nerd allies, Sierra, which means you need to give them a chance to be allies" Elemento di forza di questo libro sono sicuramente gli scontri magici ben riusciti. La trama è abbastanza originale, non è troppo articolata ma generalmente bella Purtroppo questo libro non mi é piaciuto e non é riuscito a tenermi attaccata alle pagine ⭐️⭐️.5/5
I was provided with this ARC in exchange for an honest review, thank you to Netgallery, Victory Editing and importantly Casey Blair.
Take Back Magic is a fast paced and dives straight into action, introducing us to our strong independent FMC Sierra, who wasn't afraid to grab hold of an opportunity that appeared (quite literally) in front of her and take advantage of it. Our MMC Nariel is a handsome shadow daddy with wings, always a bonus.
Sierra and Nariel become allys in their fight to take back magic (well named book) with their chemistry is subtle at first, and building further throughout the plot though it doesn't really kick off fully, I'm guessing this will be in the next book. The banter is more a focus and humorous.
I did enjoy the action and our strong female lead in this, however I hope there is further world building as it is a shorter story so does have this element missing. I did find my interestint wavering slightly in places but was able to finish it okay.
- Urban fantasy
- Strong fierce wizard FMC
- Mysterious shadow daddy MMC
- Demons, wizards and magical battles
- Banter all the way
- At the time of writing this review, available on Kindle Unlimited where the trilogy is available
This is a well-crafted urban fantasy that manages to pack a compelling and sweet bond between two lost souls while delivering a gripping, action-packed narrative with complex characters.
What truly elevates this book is how quickly and deeply you grow to care about the characters and their journey. The fierce determination is captivating, but Sierra's vulnerability, shaped by betrayal and loss, makes her so relatable. Her dynamic with Nariel, her dangerous yet intriguing companion, is the highlight of the story. Their blooming romance is bittersweet and surprisingly tender—rooted in mutual respect and shared goals rather than superficial attraction. Despite their bond forming quickly, it feels earned because they see and admire each other for who they truly are.
The world-building is refreshingly robust for such a fast-paced story. Blair weaves magic and a modern setting together, creating a world that feels both grounded and fantastical. This is a story about reclaiming power and fighting for something greater than yourself. It’s beautifully written and will leave you eager for more. Highly recommended for fans of urban fantasy with complex characters.
"I never realised that my type is a man who can appreciate how competent I am and is dedicated to helping me achieve what I'm capable of without trying to overshadow me. Not to mention, you know, being the most beautiful person I've ever seen. I guess that helps."
4.5 ⭐️ Whenever I set my standards too low, I remember fictional men like Nariel exist. And even though I'm straight, if Sierra was real, I'd be on my knees for her (literally). What a badass, what a badass! Her fortitude was so admirable! Even when all the odds seemed to be against her, she was ever so loyal and brave. I admire her a lot.
And the world structure was actually surprisingly easy to picture for me, even though I didn't feel like the world building was necessarily good... Maybe because I read too much Fantasy? I dunno. I'm eagerly looking forward to read what happens next because I did NOT like how that ended and I'm sure Sierra is gonna be even more impressive in the next book.
Rounding up from a 3.5. I really enjoyed this more than expected. The fmc (Sierra) was extremely focused in her goal - Bring back her Magic. After basically kidnapped as a 7-8yo and spending 10 years in "Upper Earth" - thoroughly immersed in magic, to the point of almost a sadistic level, Sierra was returned to "Lower Earth" (that's Us) and the magic was taken away. She wasn't willing to continue without it and had been planning a way to return it to Lower Earth by any means necessary. Those means involved (unexpectedly) a demon Prince (Nariel - mmc) and plenty of travel to the high power spots in the world. Fighting Upper Earth mages at each location. It takes a while to settle into the book and become invested in the characters. To win her goal, Sierra has to change from a loner to more of a team player as the book progresses. In that win, she realizes magic alone is just not enough. Agreements are made that separate the two partners - who were heading into a more romantic relationship. Book 2 is teed up. I do plan to read the series.
This book is going engage teenage (and adult) readers alike due to the following:
- The reader is quickly immersed in this fantasy world and the action starts straight away
- The magic system (and the injustice of it) is clearly explained and easy to understand
- You can relate to the locations they travel to because they are part of our world
- Sierra is a strong (cussing), kick ass lead, righting injustices and who we all want to be!
- The hot fallen angel who works alongside her is total boyfriend material (but of course it's complex - he's a demon)
- I assume it's not a massive novel in length as it was quite quick to devour (hard to judge when this was a downloaded ARC from Netgalley and not a physical copy).
This is definitely a series I will be looking out for when purchasing in the future for the school library.
In Take Back Magic, you are dropped immediately into the action. Sierra makes a pretty bold move at the beginning of the story that directs the rest of the plot, including her interactions with Nariel, who is definitely more than he lets on initially. There is magic, there are angels, it's dystopian. Lots going in a shorter page count.
The world building is spread throughout the book, but knowing it is a series is helpful. While reading, it can feel a bit jarring at times because it seems like you should understand the context of the world even when you haven't received the information yet. It would have been easier for me to get a little more information up front, but that's a preference thing. I enjoyed the main characters and would continue reading to see where things end up!
Thanks to Victory Editing and NetGalley for an eARC of this book for an honest review.
