Lies of the Wicked

Rate this book
Author B. L. Lewis presents her debut novel, LIES OF THE WICKED. This is a standalone romantasy with a fairy tale twist. Packed with adventure and swoon, this fast-paced story is a quick, dark, and cozy read.

“This is where we disagree. You’re unequivocally powerful, you don’t complain despite what you carry, and you’re the most brutal, beautiful thing I’ve ever met.”

Eighteen-year-old Thessa Skiafer is a young witch and bladesmith, with a secret to keep. Living in a realm guarded by Elemental soldiers makes this a very dangerous truth to hold. Perhaps that’s why she suffers with anxiety; she lives in a world she does not belong in.

When a demon uncovers her lies, he offers her sanctuary in return for joining his rebellion. Though she’s reluctant to fight, she’s quickly captivated by his magic.

After a brutal attack against him, her trust blooms alongside her feelings. Thessa learns the price of freedom, as well as love, and fighting for both will either kill or complete her.

This story is an optional prequel to The Wolf Queen Chronicles (to be read before or after The Magicless Mage).

A wonderful debut book!
I feel like it’s the perfect book for fall season full of witchy vibes and with a great plot to it. The story is engaging and leaves you wanting for more.
The friendship between Thessa and Leora was so cute and heartwarming, and I liked the relationship between the main characters.
It’s a short and fast-paced book, and I wish it was more developed but the world is really intriguing and I was not ready to leave it!

Huge thanks to the lovely author for giving me an ARC of this book!

Perfect fall read! I loved getting immersed into a world full of witches, and that there were varying types: Celestial, Botanical, Elemental, and…? You’ll have to read to find out 😈 as you can see, I read this in a day so it clearly hooked my interest.

Thessa is cynical and snarky, I love her to bits. The camaraderie and pure love from her friends was palpable throughout the story, and the 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 between Thessa and the mmc omfg. 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘣𝘰𝘺𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘵!

For a debut release I’m really impressed; Lewis crafted an original world with easily-digestible conflicts and triumphs. At times, the story can trick you into it feeling (mildly) rushed and I can see how other reviewers perceived it as such, but I think we’ve all just come to expect pages upon pages explaining nonsensical things in fantasy. I truly don’t need to know the layout of a fucking kitchen sink in 6 paragraphs, so I appreciated the pace and efficiency in this book! We need more good fantasy reads that stay under 400 pages, and this one fits the bill!

The spice was spicing 🥵 beautifully done. When the blurb says it’s YA into NA, it’s accurate. The open door scenes aren’t until later in the book, as it’s a bit of a slow burn/build up, but they deliver when the time comes. 😏

Anyways, I’m a sucker for a good “girlie doesn’t know her power/hates herself a little bit into doing a 180 with the emotional support of her mans and outshines everyone else in attendance” vibe. If you’re craving something similar to Nesta and a more condensed version of her journey, this is for you!

(Spoiler-free review)

This book was the perfect fall read for me! A fast paced romantasy about Thessa Skiafer, a witch and a bladesmith, and her journey into adulthood and self-discovery.

This is the first book about witches I've ever read and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to get an arc of this book, I loved getting to know all the lore and info while reading especially the little notes at the beginning of every chapter, the story felt very original and the premise but the book had a few flaws that held it back from being even better than it already is imo.

The Characters:

Thessa: she is a very kind, a little too oblivious and trusting witch and I loved her character development and how she came to understand who and what she is by the end of the book. There’s a character that says “It’s bold of any female to trust a male wholeheartedly.” And I honestly wanted to scream that at Thessa a lot of the time lol

Soren: he confused me at first but the moment he was described as a broody guy with dark hair and tattoos I knew this will be our mmc lol, I sympathized with him all along despite him appearing more antagonistic at first, he is definitely my favorite character in the book.

Leora: "He's a little confused, but he got the spirit."

The Plot:

There was SO much going on and I loved every bit of it but also as much as I enjoy fast paced books, it didn't do this book any favors, the book felt more like 2 combined in 1 and it made the book lack emotional depth and it felt like we were rushing from one event to another and a LOT of the time I felt like I may have skipped a scene or a line but no, it was just written this way.

This story itself is original and I always felt like I needed to know what happens next and I was very excited to see how Thessa would get out of difficult situations.

The Romance:

The MCs felt more like companions who occasionally hookup for the more part tbh, as I mentioned before, emotional moments weren't expanded on enough so I didn't feel much for the love story and the love confessions but they grew on me by the end.

The Writing:

While I loved the characters and the story the main flaw of this book is the writing and the lack of depth to it.

I've already mentioned this but it's important to bring it up here: I felt like I was in the dark a lot of the time because of the lack of inner monologue.

The author wanted us to feel a certain way about the characters and their relationships but it felt so forced because we didn't get a proper reason to feel this way or any buildup, I feel like more of an observer watching random events I'm not immersed into and intruding into the characters' lives run a reader sometimes, for example a character could have an opinion or make a decision then change their mind 3 pages later with little to no explanation at first then it's explained to late (if explained at all, I usually don't care what pov I'm reading but the 3rd person pov was detrimental to this book.

Finally, the conclusion of the book was sweet and actually emotional, and I was so excited when I saw the Oueen of Nothing similarities, it had a similar idea but was done differently here and I loved it, I think this last part of the book is where I really knew I loved Thessa and Soren ✨

Overall thoughts:

Amazing autumn read with the perfect balance between the plot and romance that I definitely recommend, I feel like this was very good especially as a debut and I'd definitely love to read anything else the author writes in the future 🖤

"This is your soul. Dark and lovely, isn't it?"

"You're unequivocally powerful, you don't complain despite what you carry, and you're the most brutal, beautiful thing I've ever met."

A beautiful read filled with witches, serpents and powers galore. I absolutely adored the banter and growing love between Thessa and Soren!

I found it unique that the way you could tell who has what power is by the color of their fingertips after their Summoning Day! Such a cool aspect to the book.

This tale is filled with banter (I laughed out loud a few times), on/off-page spice and the found family trope I adore.

I'm usually not fond of 3rd person POV, but I figured to give it a go and I enjoyed it! While I feel some parts were rushed (like the battle, for example, it started and ended sooo quickly) I devoured it fairly quickly. I'd Honestly enjoy a book 2 if it's ever in the stars!

If you're looking for something seasonal, and a lot of witches, this is a great fall rec - thank you again B.L. Lewis for sending me this ARC to read! 🖤

I loved both MC and their stories. The vibes oh the vibes!
Witchy, Demon, Magic, Romance, and dark vibes are my type and this what nothing but!

I enjoyed how the writer went into depth about the magic and its meaning. I loved the notes at the beginning of each chapter!

The banter between the MC was everything! I immediately fell for them. Was definitely swooned.

This was such an easy read. And i definitely recommend you guys to pick this up when it comes out October 1st!!!

Witches, shadows, and enemies-to-lovers…oh my!

Lies of the Wicked is a refreshing addition to the Romantasy literary scene. Thessa, an orphan witchling with a penchant for making daggers and the unlikeliest of friends, will endear herself to you with her struggles against herself and the world around her. Soren, a man with secrets and a snake obsession, will make you laugh through the tears of frustration he frequently causes with his schemes and antics. The mythology in this world is familiar yet distinctive from its roots, and the magic system has obviously had thought out into it. I would have liked to see the sociopolitical aspects fleshed out a bit more, but all around a worthy addition to your ever-growing TBR pile.

The idea of this story is such a good book idea, and I really wanted to love this book more than I did.

I found it really difficult for me to be fully immersed in the book because there wasn't enough information or depth to make me connect with the characters or the story enough. There were a few times where I would pick it up to keep reading and just didn't have the drive to finish it because I wasn't invested in it all that much.

I found myself frustrated with the main character for some of her actions and for being immature when she was presented with all the information and just seemingly didn't care to pay attention to it. I enjoyed the end of the book because she seemed to grow into what she was meant to be a bit more. However, it felt like there was a jump between the person she was and the more grown version without actually showing any character growth from her. All the bones of the story are there, but it really does lack description in just about every way - how things look, feel, what the characters feel or how they act, etc. I do realize I am someone who loves a lot of description, so this may be a bit biased. Overall, I don't think this is a bad book. However, I do feel that it needs to be expanded on in order to be a more rounded book. I would still recommend reading it if you like fantasy or romantasy, and it sounds interesting to you because it is a cool story and deserves to be read.

After not having read a single page in about a month I decided to pick up this ARC and I’m so so so glad I did. This book reminded me of why I love reading so much and I’m so thankful for that. So thankyou 🫶🏼

This is her B. L. Lewis her debut novel and it was so so so good!! She really had me giggling and kicking my feet A LOT. It’s YA/NA crossover read and a romantasy!!! My all time fave 🖤

This book really gave me all the fall vibes and I’m all here for it. I kept wanting to read the whole time, the story is so fast-paced and very entertaining!! Also the banter between the MMC and the FMC was bantering 🤭

There were a LOT of good quotes that I loved so so so much!!! 🫶🏼

I wished this book was longer so I could’ve enjoyed the MC’s story more, I wouldn’t have minded being in this world a little longer ❤️‍🔥

thessa is a strong character, who grows into her power. the friendships here were wildly endearing (i’m a sucker for found family). ALSO i like soren from the beginning 🙂‍↕️🫶

i think the story was a bit fast paced at times, which didn’t allow the reader to truly feel the impact of some parts of the story.

thank you for letting me read this arc!!

I didn't know I fanscied witches until I picked this book tbh. From the world threaded to the characters it was truly different for me. It was fast paced maybe a little bit too fast at some times than it should but nevertheless it introduced the lone witch Thessa and her unique existence *Wink **Wink*

I liked how each chapter started with notes from her different classes because it was the author's way of giving us information about the world without the element of info-dumbing and it worked for her at some part but I think it failed in others because it had me confused at some points.

Although I loved the characters even if they angered me at some points or were irrational at others for no appropriate reason it felt as if the author was very familiar with the story that she may have forgotten that Us the audience are just getting introduced to these characters and this plot line.

It felt as if I should know these people and I don't; not until I was halfway where I had some familiarity with the story. It felt like I was reading this from the outside instead.

But,

I did not skim through this book, I was engulfed by the story and by the need to know what's gonna happen next; how could this mess be untangled.

One other thing about the characters is the love interests or the characters relationships, they felt so instant; there wasn't much depth in how these characters started to have a liking/interest in each other (planning a whole rescuing plan because of sudden liking developed by one of the characters to another was not it, they weren't even that familiar with each other to risk their lives for each other 🙃) that's why me and my friend talked about how this book needed some editing beta readers should've pointed out some things just for refining; I genuinely think if these things were fixed before release it would've made this book 5 star read.

(No spoilers, no worries)

The ending took me by surprise tbh, I had some theories but I DID NOT see that coming; it was such a sneaky ending and I loved it. I'm looking forward to read more by this author tbh and I would love to have a physical copy of this if I ever get the chance to (screw international shipping)

I recommend you pick this up if you're looking for something witchery during these few last months of 2024.

I really enjoyed the magic system and world building in this one, where you gain whatever type of magic you’ll have when you come of age. This book was giving perfect witchy vibes for the fall season, and I really enjoyed reading about Thessa’s journey. I also liked her friendship with Leora, I’m always up for a book with great female friendships.

And I thought the chapter headers, having different little excerpts from various books and notes, was a fun touch!

I do agree with some other reviewers that this felt like it just didn't get as deep as it could have? I do think that this was a super solid debut and I look forward to reading more from this author as their craft grows and develops.

I received a copy for an instagram book tour. My thoughts are my own.

I really enjoyed this book! It starts off strong with a prologue that draws you in with some perceived taboo incident to get you asking questions, and the rest of the book delivers with the answers in a satisfying way.
Written in third person, the author does a wonderful job changing up the sentence structure and identifiers, keeping repetition to a minimum and reducing the chance of reading fatigue. It’s also pleasantly descriptive without being overwhelming, allowing your mind to fill in the blanks and create your own version of the surrounding world.
Character development in the first half of the book is evenly paced and realistic between individuals, while the second half feels a bit rushed between the FMC and MMC. Events in the later half of the book, towards the climax, also seem a bit hasty and leaves some key characters scarcely mentioned. I found myself wanting additional details surrounding them during the collective climb to the peak, feeling almost as if those characters were set aside to come back with extra information, but didn’t quite make it in.
I do feel it concludes nicely as a stand alone, although I could also see success as a duology as well—were it to be split off with a cliffhanger around 70-80% and given the space to elaborate through to the overall ending.
From my perspective, the magic system was relatively unique and simple to understand. Each chapter header included notes from the FMC’s journals during her education as a witch, giving additional necessary insight into their world without bogging down the main storyline.
Overall I think it was a fun read, and I plan on adding a physical copy to my collection if/when they become available.
I would recommend this to readers looking for a witchy-romance with a little bit of spice and morally grey MCs.

“𝑺𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝒃𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒐𝒇 𝒏𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒇𝒖𝒓𝒚”

Thessa is our FMC who isn’t quite sure who she is, or where she belongs. Coming into her magic isn’t exactly what she pictured it to be, and everything she thinks she knows about witches and demons isn’t true.

Our moody MMC is mysterious, moody, and muscular 😉 so what more could we want?

“𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒊𝒕 𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒅𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒉 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒐𝒓 𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆”

The pacing of this book was perfect for me. I was never left feeling bored, or like something was missing, and the chapter lengths were my cup of tea (short) 👌🏼

I think this book is perfect for people who like;
~ books about witches
~ books with magic
~ when he falls first
~ enemies to lovers vibes
~ touch her and die 😉
~ character growth

What a great debut book! This was such a good witchy fall read. I fear I will be dreaming of Thessa and Soren for a while and missing the world of Andera.

The book follows 18 year old Thessa and the discovery or her magic, where she came from, and how to let others in to love her. It has some of your favorite tropes: found family, forbidden magic, witches and demons. And even highlights Thessa’s struggles with anxiety and her coping mechanisms.

A few of my favorite quotes:

“She had no home, no family, no love, and now no certainty, or purpose.” We love a found family storyline.

“Is this how you teach all your riding lessons?” “Depends on what type of riding lesson.” His tone matched his wicked grin. Thessa’s skin flushed. 🤭

“What do you see?” he asked. “Darkness,” she whispered.

“Do not touch her.” 🥵

You can find this review of Lies of the Wicked on my blog, Heart’s Content!

A big shout out and thank you to the author for providing me with a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review!

Lies of the Wicked by B. L. Lewis is a stand-alone romantic fantasy with many tropes that are well-loved and themes that are both familiar and distinct.

My favourite thing about Lies of the Wicked was that it has a very unique world and magic system that features many categories of magic wielders, power play, politics, secrets and gods. There were so many aspects of the book that I could immediately connect to and see as witch magic and genuinely felt it was such an incredible way to have imagined that aspect of the world.

My second favourite thing about Lies of the Wicked was the connection between the FMC and her friend. I thought it was extremely sweet and I love friends supporting one another! *sniffles*

My third favourite element was the dialogues! There were many dialogues in the book I’d laughed over and/or highlighted to add to this very review. I also appreciate that the author chose to write a standalone. In the age of five book series, a standalone has become a unicorn of sorts.

However. However the thread connecting all these great aspects (to me) felt like they weren’t as strong or as tightly knit as a script such as this should be. I would personally categorise LotW as a high fantasy and a genre like that requires some really well detailed world building backed up by a very strong premise that’s perfectly trimmed and edited to balance the plot unfolding with character growth and relationships; especially if everything wraps up in one book.

The struggle with having so many important elements is how to entwine them to work in harmony together. To me LotW couldn’t quite perfect that balance and I was often left feeling a bit off-kilter. Given the nature of the plot of LotW (be it the overall plot or all the sub plots), there was a lot that needed to happen between the big scenes, lots of details and experiences that could’ve uplifted the nature of the story that I felt wasn’t included. Without that, the sense of urgency, connection, empathy was missing at many points, for me. The book has lots of potential! I could sense that connection at times but it slipped through my fingers at many points and I found myself skim reading a lot, which broke my own heart.

As mentioned earlier, as much as the book had many unique themes to it, I also found some familiar aspects of it that I’ve seen before in some of our well loved books. *shrugs* I think that it’s pretty inevitable, to find some similarities. We’ve all grown up reading books that we love and are influenced by and these aspects are likely to sometimes make their presence known.

Lies of the Wicked has released and is available on KU for free for subscribers! Check trigger warnings and happy reading.

I actually loved this book so so so much. In a world of witches, Thessa graduates her schooling and is sent off to channel her powers and learn their uses in a region by the name of Mabelton. When her summoning comes and she finds out about her powers, she’s left with a lot of questions, that is until she is swept away for a trial and learns of a rebellion stirring on the continent. The characters in this book are some of the truest people and witches I have ever heard about. The love that the friends share for one another as well as the leading couple is so admirable and so heartwarming. It made everything feel like a relief after such tense plot points in the book. The dynamic of everyone is just so fun to read and the reasoning behind their want to rebel is just meaningful. I could not put this book down, at all. I’m giving it 5 stars because there is genuinely not a thing I did not like about this book. I thought I wouldn’t like the ending, but the author TURNED AROUND the ending, instead of it not being a happily ever after, she saved it.

ARC Review
I absolutely devoured this book - stayed up until 4 am reading it - so fantastic! It was witchy, eerie and perfect for fall. I loved Thessa, she’s badass and has such amazing character growth. There is some really great mental health representation that I identified with. The world building was done flawlessly and it was never overwhelming. There is excellent romance - I am a sucker for a broody MMC- and also just great friendship.

Literally the only thing I would have liked it is to be longer and give some parts more room to breathe but that’s just because I didn’t want it to end. Can’t wait for more from this author!

If you’re looking for:

• Fall vibes
• Witchy vibes
• Serpents
• Tension
• Found family
• Shadow magic
• Fast paced

Then you’ve found the right book!!!

This was a great debut book for author B.L. Lewis! For context, this is a YA standalone Romantasy, however the spice scenes cross over into New Adult and let me tell youuuuu 😏🥵

This is full of witches, serpents, action, spells and tension!! I love the shorter chapters and the immediate tension between Soren and Thessa.

I will say I wish it was longer so we could be immersed in their world just a little longer! That being said however, this IS YA, so you don’t necessarily get those intricate world building details that you would in an adult fantasy.

The 🌶️ scenes were SO GOOD. GIIIRL 😏, you know what you’re doing! I really did love this book so much. The witchy vibes, the angst and tension between Thessa and Soren was 🤌. Not only do you get spice and angsty love but we also see Thessa finding family in her friends and learning to love and be loved by those around her! Leora and Thessa friendship is one of kind, sweet and so inspiring.

This was an ARC read, all opinions are my own. Thank you author B.L. Lewis for the free copy of this book!

Lies of the Wicked by B.L. Lewis
🌶️🌶️🌶️

I always enjoy getting sucked into a new world! The fact that it involves witches and my fav type of MMC makes it that much better. I knew the second Soren came into play he was going to make the book boyfriend list 🔥 The spice was a slooooow burn for sure and I’m left wanting more of it with how well it is written 🥵 Thr world building was crafted perfectly and I couldn’t love it enough. The dynamics of the Rebellion and the Supreme’s were touched on and I’m hoping for more in a sequel? 👀

🖤 Found Family
🥹 Grumpy x Sunshine Friendship
🔥 Banter & Tension
🗡️ Touch Her and Die
🥵 He Falls First
🤩 Mental Health Representation

I loved the dark fantasy academia meets witchy feel😍🖤 This debut novel is enthralling, dynamic, and immersive. The world builds quickly, and the characters introduced are dynamic and their development is beautiful. Thessa is strong, sarcastic, independent, and heartfelt FMC. Her journey of self-discovery and self-confidence is one I deeply resonated with, along with the representation of anxiety. I especially loved Thessa’s relationship with her friend, Leora. It gave me all the Wednesday Addams and Enid vibes!! 🖤💗 I really enjoyed the elements of mystery and political turmoil that unfolded throughout the novel. The MMC is a man from your dark romance dreams. He was broody, strong-willed, brutally determined, and patient with Thessa. I loved the banter and tension him and Thessa had, and when the spice came it was perfect! 🥵🔥 I also loved Leora and her man!! Omg what cuties. I’m actually obsessed with all these characters and can’t wait to see what else B. L. Lewis has planned! This is the perfect fall witchy read to add to your TBR!!✨🥰

4.5 ⭐️

I absolutely loved this story. Thessa and the people who she meets along the way were nothing short of lovable.

The story wasn’t predictable, which is huge for me, the plot was wonderful and I never wanted any of it to end. Thessa is a remarkable character and watching her journey had me in tears one moment, giggling the next and maybe at a couple points, I gasped haha. I read this from start to finish in one day and I’m a little sad I did, but nothing could have stopped me. ❤️

The only reason I gave it a 4.5 ⭐️ vs a 5 is the fact that the story was a little rushed, but it’s a small book with so much wonderful detail). Then the way the first 3 chapters were written. I can’t quite mark what it was, maybe the way the chapters transitioned weren’t smooth? Hard to place but nothing bad and got better pretty quickly.

I highly recommend this book, the author did such an awesome job. 😭 Ugh now I am crying, I will miss Thessa and her friends so much. Guess that’s why it’ll be a definite reread 📚

*I received a free ARC in exchange for an honest review -- this book releases 10/1/2024 *

I really enjoyed this book. It's got elements that remind me of other stories I've read (I kept wanting to draw comparisons to The Black Witch Chronicles by Laurie Forest, I suppose because of the semi-academic vibes and the darker magic), but is unique enough to hold its own in the fantasy world. For a debut author, this is a fantastic start! I also loved the little notes at the top of each chapter.

The biggest qualm I have is that it felt kind of rushed. The relationships were believable enough, but it felt like there could have been more to flesh things out.

* Potential Spoilers *

The way Leora was introduced, I can understand liking her, but I couldn't quite accept that she and Thessa were the best of friends; we weren't given enough to see the relationship build. If they knew each other before the story started it might've made more sense. Similarly, with Ivy and Beatrix, I honestly was holding them at a distance until it was revealed how much they cared for Thessa (though that is probably a lot of just my own suspicion about characters and a wariness of falling for a character that will then betray everyone in some way). As for Emiel and Soren -- Leora and Emiel's storyline worked. Soren, on the other hand...he fell awfully fast and there wasn't enough given in the book to help me accept it. The flip from 'enemies' to 'lovers' was quite sudden (despite the fact that you knew it was coming from the moment he was introduced), and with the suddenness it was hard to believe there was love involved and not just lust/attraction.

About halfway through, I realized that I had assumed this would be the first of a series, and began speculating how subsequent books would go. However, it became clear pretty quickly that the story had a resolution in this book. The ending seemed too simple and clean (don't get me wrong, I like a happy ending) and just added to the rushed feeling.

Despite all of that, the story was still cohesive and made sense overall. It didn't feel like it was missing any important plot points or necessary details, but I didn't really feel connected to the characters.

I really enjoyed the story, twists and the extensive lore. Took me only a day and a half to read, so I was invested.

I feel like this could’ve been a full blown trilogy or even a duology, but I’m still satisfied with how it all went down. My only thing was that sometimes it was hard to tell what exactly was going on, like the main battle at the very end.

I felt like there were so many characters that were introduced just to be in the background or play an unimportant role.

But besides that, I liked the storyline, the character interactions and the ending!

Also, was fully prepared to cry for Soren at the end, IYKYK

Huge thank you to B.L. Lewis for sending me a copy for review

First of all, thank you so much to B.L. Lewis for the ARC in return for an honest review!

I enjoyed this book to the point where I wanted more. I wanted more explanations and details into things. I agree with other reviewers about this being a duo series to be able to dive deeper into the story and characters.

I think Soren is easily my favorite character, and the banter between the FMC and MMC are chefs kiss top tier!
This is truly a unique storyline.

The writing was great and I’m looking forward to reading more from this author!

Lies of the Wicked
B. L. Lewis
ARC review

“Perhaps it’s not the spells I spent a century searching for, but rather you.”

Lies of the Wicked is an awesome fantasy romance and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a story that includes:

-Witchcraft
-Magic
-Touch her and die
-Self discovery
-A fantasy standalone (no cliffhanger)

I hope to read more of B. L. Lewis’s books in the future. This is definitely a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️read!

This book was sooo good!! I read it in 3 days and if I didn't have a job and side business, it would have been 2 days. I haven't been this hooked on a book since ACOTAR. I'm knocking off 1 star because I do wish this had been split into 2 books because I definitely think certain areas could have used a little more build up or detail (I would like to only knock off half a star but that does not seem to be an option). This is also the first book that had me taking notes throughout because I really wanted to capture what I was thinking while reading. Absolutely loved it. I think I want to cosplay Thessa now. I would love a spinoff series. I'm sad it's over and I will definitely be buying a physical copy and reading this multiple times

I have really enjoyed this book. It was a lovely autumnal read full of witches, magic and fated mates.

This story was full of friendship, fate and making a broken person whole again.

Leora and Thessa made quite a unique friendship at first, but as the story develops, you realise that Thessa needs a friend like that in her life in order to be who she is supposed to be.

Thessa’s story line was full of surprises, but also hints of how the story will progress. I loved every single bit of it.

As for other relationships and friendships, when you read this book and get further into it, you will find out how all the puzzle pieces work together to create the bigger picture.

Thessa’s relationship with S might feel rushed at first, but don’t let it fool you. It will all make sense when you get to THAT part. 👀

The ending was amazing and I would happily read this book again.

Such a perfect book to start spooky season!! 🔮

I’m super grateful to have been gifted this ARC for this debut novel! I’ve been so excited because the cover is so stunning. Excellent artwork.

This has witches and magic and a smooooooth MMC. I love him 😍 I enjoyed this story and there were some parts I couldn’t put down! The world building was fascinating and I really liked the FMC throughout the story, she is brave and strong and a little sassy. I loved Leora too, she is special!!! I love strong female friendships.

I do wish maybe it was longer so we could have more character development for the characters and relationships. There were a few times I felt a little confused in the story, but that may be due to my own preference. I really like things to be spelled out for me as a reader.

Thank you B. L. Lewis for this ARC!!! 🫶🏻

True rating: 4.5

Firstly a massive massive thank you to the author for providing me with an eARC of this book!

And secondly, THIS is how you do a standalone romantasy. I’m honestly floored. Let me explain why.

It’s a known fact that a standalone fantasy novel, especially a short one, can be a hit or miss. Creating a world and lore that is unique in a short amount of pages, making characters with detailed backgrounds that readers feel attached to and care about as well as a romance that ticks all the boxes and tropes and is convincing is HARD. BUT. the author does this. And so brilliantly as well.

The pace is fast with so much happening but there’s a great balance of slow points and lots of detail that means that you don’t feel rushed or confused or like you can’t immerse yourself into a scene or with characters. The lore and magic system is explained really well at the start, with additional explanations as you read through and uncover more about the world.

The descriptions are short but detailed and not once did I struggle to imagine a scene or a character. And neither did I feel like the details were too much or descriptions too long.

Back on the magic and world lore, it was so interesting to see witches and their magic explored this way. There’s essentially four categories that witches and their magic is put into, with specific details so that you can identify each well. The history of the magic is also super interesting and again explained really well. The only only thing is I wish for MORE. I would honestly take 500 pages based on the lore and the world and the magic system and the in depth story behind the rebellion but I am a glutinous reader. The amount was perfect and readers will not be disappointed at all. I just loved it so much that I would take moreeeee!!

Now the characters…

Thessa, our FMC, is brilliant. She’s relatable, unique in her personality and behaviour (and her magic). She has a tragic backstory that is explained well and her character development and growth in the book feels genuine and not rushed or out of place. She really gave me Aelin vibes (from Sarah J Maas’ Throne of Glass series) and whilst I don’t like comparing books, I think the comparison is needed to show that I see so much of one of my favourite characters in this soon to be released book.

One thing that I was so impressed with is Thessa having anxiety and panic attacks. The reason why is because the author blends this into the story really well and uses magic and potions as relievers for Thessa. It was great representation and was so awesome to see

Soren, the MMC, is our typical distrusting, broody, suspicious yet alluring MMC and again, the author makes him so unique that it doesn’t feel like any MMC we’ve met before. He takes a while to warm up to Thessa, and who he is as a character is someone that you can easily connect with and someone you feel attached to. He too has a tragic backstory but one that highlights his growth in the book.

Now, the romance. The romance is great. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about it. Thessa and Soren start off as haters to lovers, both clearly finding something interested about the other but still focusing on their dislike towards each other. Their romance blossoms at a pace that feels genuine and you can really see their feelings develop. The tropes also trope HARD!!! These include:

- touch her and 💀
- sort of grumpy x sunshine
- MMC worships the ground the FMC walks on
- sexual tension
- spicey scenes 👀

Overall, it’s perfect. And such a wonderful story. It’s amazing because whilst I need 100 books in this series, it’s also perfect that I don’t want anymore additions to their story. I think the choice to make this a standalone was perfect. And a book that is a perfect addition to the romantasy genre.

If you love haters to lovers, a unique magic system with witches and shadow magic, sexual tension, spicey scenes and a rebellion against the capital sort of vibes, then this book is perfect for you.

Lies of the Wicked is released on 1st October
