"Brave Men's Tears" is the story of the Battle at Brawner Farm, from the army movements which initiated the collision to the aftermath of the fighting. During the battle two Federal brigades, those of General John Gibbon and General Abner Doubleday, struggled to a tactical draw with Stonewall Jackson's divisions under Richard Ewell and William Taliaferro. Fought near Groveton, Virginia on August 28, 1862, and lasting but three hours, the conflict at Brawner Farm had a tremendous impact on the outcome of the Second Manassas Campaign. Special attention is focused on Gibbon's brigade, soon to be called the Iron Brigade, and the Wisconsin and Indiana soldiers he commanded. The text is supplemented by five maps and forty-five photographs, many never before published.

Four stars if you are interested in regimental histories of US Civil War units and the details of a battle which was part of a larger battle and largely forgotten by everyone but those who fought there for years.
The details of the birth of the Iron Brigade, its encounter with the Stonewall Brigade and the details of what happened to individuals at this battle is a detailed and interesting read. A greater variety of maps would have helped me to better visualize the battle.
I recommend this for the hard core Civil War buff and researcher. If you are not into this level of detail, you will not enjoy the book. If you are, you will.
