A wary widow is befriended by a charming duke who's determined not only to win her trust, but convince her that she is the one woman for him at Christmas and for all seasons.
The story was uninteresting, the plot non-existent, the characters non-descript, the romance unbelievable.
So why did I read it? ... I had no access to the internet all day, so I could not read one of my ebooks. There were no other books around, only this sorry excuse for a romantic novel, leaflet-like and lying on the coffee-table of my guest room.
As I prefer reading to watching TV, I gave it a go ... and have been regretting it since.
As a follow up, I truly enjoyed it. There were a lot of words in there that made me wonder if this wasn’t written by English teacher. This book was written over 20 years ago, so I don’t know if anyone is writing like this anymore. Figured out pretty early who the bad guy was, but it didn’t stop me from reading on. As I said earlier, I truly enjoyed this book. Now on the next one.
Sophie's marriage, which began with such high hopes and love, ended with a whimper. Except for a slight flashback to the night before her wedding, most of the book revolves around her life in England after being widowed in Italy. Her flighty poet husband abandoned her before his untimely death. Her husband was unable to sustain his love in the daily (boring) minutia of life!
Dominic, newly made a Duke, had fallen madly in love with Sophie even though she was engaged at the time to her poet. They shared a magical kiss on the eve of her wedding, but Sophie considers it just a mild flirtation and is more embarrassed by the incident than entranced by it.
But as a favor to Sophie's brother-in-law, Dominic meets Sophie at the docks when she arrives from Italy with two of her landlady's daughters (maids) in tow and a friend of her husband. Sophie guards her heart and Dominic commits to being her friend (though attempting to turn her regard to love).
Sophie is determined to publish her husband's poems and Dominic assists while they linger at her sister's house during the Christmas season. There are adventures to be had, a baby to be born and a mystery to solve. Something strange revolves around the sheaf of poems that Sophie has brought from Italy. (This summary comes from an Amazon review.)
I picked this book up at my local used book store. It originally came out in Oct. 2004. What did not seem believable is that Dominic would not have married another before Sophie's return. For the Alpha Male character, Dominic is a bit of a wimp and not compelling.
I found this book off my shelf while re-organizing, and I didn't remember reading it...I re-read it and still don't remember!! Anyway, I'm pulling it off my keeper shelf and putting into the box to sell/give away. The romance was completely uninteresting. There were no sparks between Dominic and Sophie and the story was cluttered up with sub-plots. I felt like there were big pieces missing in the story-line and there were many references to people and events not included in this book.
