Bridging the Gap

One of the most popular literary genres, memoir can provide literary and literacy access to reluctant adolescent readers and writers, and help bridge the achievement gap by motivating students to read more critically and write more meaningfully about what matters most to them. The introspective nature of memoir helps students learn about themselves and connect with their environment or community, while also meeting a variety of Common Core standards.

In this way, memoirs and creative nonfiction can provide a bridge between

I often get asked to speak to students in schools, and often, I am speaking to the whole population, not just the "creative writing" kids. The obvious dilemma is that not everybody wants to be a creative writer or is interested in creative writing. BUT everyone, every student, has to write SOMETHING and making a connection to writing "creatively" can, and WILL help. Not only will it help make student writing better but more enjoyable for the writer (which may actually be one and the same!)

Now, take that idea one step further and you have, what educator Lesley Roessing has laid out in her book, Bridging the Gap. If memoir writing is the stepping stone to more relevant and meaningful writing, then this book is the blueprint.
However, it does not read, in any way, like an academic text. It is an engaging, honest, reflective memoir itself.

At the same time, it is filled with practical and easily- applied exercises, mentor texts, resources, and teacher modeling examples. There are charts and graphs, as well as excerpts from picture books to adult literary fiction.

Using a clear and simple format, Ms. Roessing relates her own years of teaching experience- helping students find the trust and courage to engage in memoir. These are skills that will benefit every writer, every student, and every educator. Like learning to drive a stick shift, the strategies in this beautifully written book, are the foundation for ALL meaningful writing and close reading skills.
Bridging the Gap could be used as the curriculum of a memoir writing class for an entire year, or used as a supplement to any writing/reading/literature course for middle schoolers through adults.
