My Husband's Ex

Rate this book
‘Thank you for inviting me,’ says the woman at the door. I’ve never seen her before, but she pushes past me and throws her arms around my husband’s neck. I’m frozen in shock. Who is she?

When I hear her name, the world begins to spin around me. Alice – my husband’s ex. The one who broke his heart. But my husband swears he didn’t ask her to join us in our remote cottage in the Highlands, so why is she here?

One of them is lying to me. Shivers run up my spine as I think about my two little blonde-haired daughters who are excitedly exploring the house upstairs. They’re just eight and six, have I brought them somewhere dangerous? My skin prickles when I remember the cold look Alice threw my way and how she walked into this house as if she belonged here.

But before I can confront Alice, a huge storm hits and our power goes out. I’m down in the basement trying to fix it when I hear the lock click. I’m trapped. I scream to be let out, but Alice whispers through the keyhole: ‘No.’

My heart thuds hard against my ribcage, but I have to stay calm. Because I know something Alice doesn’t. She has no idea who she’s dealing with and she doesn’t know what I’ve done to keep my family safe.

After all this time, I won’t let her take what’s mine…

This unbelievably gripping psychological thriller will keep you speeding through the pages, with your heart racing, until you reach the final jaw-dropping twist. If you absolutely loved Gone Girl, The Housemaid or The Perfect Marriage, you will be utterly hooked!

His high quality audio deals with a women desperately trying to gix her marriage with a christmas family getaway, which is interrupted by the srrival of her husband ex and her daughter. Full of twsts and turns the story had me gripped as it showed noone knows what goes on behind vlised doors. The ending was over too quickly for me and i felt the story could hsve done with more male perspective to make it more balanced.
The narration was spot on. Thank you netgallery and publisher and author and narrator for this 4 star listen

In the tradition of all worthwhile suspense novels, "Ex-Girlfriend" keeps you guessing about what is actually happening- and why- until the last chapter. The narrator's thick Scottish brogue places you in the Scottish Highlands as soon as the story begins. There is something not right about the relationship between the husband and wife. Still, you do not take the time to examine the husband and wife's relationship because you are increasingly frustrated by the wife's inability to kick out the ex-girlfriend. It would appear that everyone has an agenda. The wife wants her husband, the ex-girlfriend wants what she left behind, and the husband wants it all. Families can be complex and Rosie Walker does an excellent job of showing how parent-child relationships can affect adult relationships, and why these relationships with our parents matter. Highly recommend! - AMC

Sadie and Ted planned a getaway with their two kids and family for the holidays.

Ted’s ex Alice shows up with a young girl and turns their world upside down. She seems to want something from Ted or does she?

I was completely invested and stumped with all the twist. I will definitely look for more by this author! The suspense was bone-chilling.

Sadie and Ted are having a rocky time in their marriage. In a last-ditch effort to save things, they rent a cabin for Christmas. It's just supposed to be them, their kids, and their parents, family. Things take a drastic turn when Ted's ex from 15 years ago shows up with a teen on tow, claiming she was invited.

My Thoughts

First, the bad. The chapters aren't as short as I have come to expect from a thriller. The sentences are a bit run-on. It's a short book, but it could still use an edit down.

Ted ( the husband) is a man-child. Sulky and sullen, trying to place blame on other people's feet. Nothing is his fault. He shuts down when things get tough and doesn't want to deal. Yet still, he is written endearingly. I can see what Sadie sees in him even when I am angry at him on her behalf.

Sadie is all heart. She wants to protest her family's strength while it is being tested, yet not wanting to cause harm to the people testing it. You can feel her roll of emotions cascading from the pages. I felt such anxiety for her. Never quite knowing who to trust as her world gets thrown for a loop. But Sadie has a past as well. One that has already cause turmoil in her life and marriage. Can they overcome this as well?

This book is tense. You can feel it building. The "what can possibly happen next" feeling that lingers between the text. Every page seems to bring on a new development. Even the spoken words don't quite mean what you think they mean. Everything has a double extended.

The ending felt a little far-fetched. After having the story unfold through Sadie's eyes and then finding out she wasn't completely honest at all made me question a bit if the author took notes as she wrote, if she forgot how Sadie felt earlier or said earlier. It does wrap up nicely, though.

I feel like I jumped off a cliff with this one. Free falling with no safety, no idea how things would turn out. I never could have predicted the last developments.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book pulled me in and kept me invested until the end. The premise was good, so I was very interested in reading this one. It was addictive and full of suspense, and I was very entertained the whole ride. The author did a great job building suspense and setting the atmosphere. Though annoying at times, I appreciated Sadie’s inner monologue. I don’t know many people who would allow their husband’s ex to show up on a family vacation and just let them stay and wreak havoc, so that part was farfetched to me.

There were twists and turns galore. The plot and story unfolded in a way that had me engrossed in what was going to happen. Then we get to the ending, and I was thoroughly confused. On top of being rushed, it was very outlandish. There wasn’t enough preparation for that ending. It seemed that it was an afterthought, and felt extremely rushed. It could’ve been a slam dunk if there was better thought and development around the ending.

Helen McAlpine did an outstanding job with the narration. I always enjoy books narrated by McAlpine.

Okay so I was totally enraptured by this story from start to end. It’s a thriller, yes, but basically also could be described as someone’s personal horror story depicting all the scenarios you would NEVER want to happen. Marriage falling apart leading to the decision to go on a Christmas trip to a secluded cabin with your family, when your husband’s ex-girlfriend suddenly shows up with her child? Quickly finding out danger is following said ex-girlfriend? A terrible, life-threatening storm with no possibility of escape? Yeah, definitely a nightmare come true and things only progressively get worse from there…

Addictive and heart-pounding, with an absolutely excellent narrator for the audiobook (Helen McAlpine), I found myself constantly surprised by the direction the story took, but ultimately felt like the ending was rushed and disappointing, lowering my overall rating.

Thank you to Rosie Walker, Bookouture, & NetGalley for the ARC! All opinions are my own.

4.25. Ex Girlfriend was a suspenseful thriller with themes dealing in marriage and family secrets.

Ted’s ex girlfriend Alice shows up unexpectedly to his family’s rental while they’re preparing for Christmas but how unexpected was it? Before his wife Sadie can confront her, they’re snowed in for a huge storm with their families as well as Alice…and her daughter. Secrets, lies, and memories tie this story together with so much suspense I couldn’t stop listening!! I was shocked during the twists and on the edge of my seat in between.

This audiobook was narrated by Helen McAlpine who conveyed the characters beautifully with her Irish accent. She made it so easy to distinguish between each person!

Thank you so much to Netgalley, Rosie Walker, and Bookouture Audio for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review. This will be a suspenseful read for everyone on May 3rd!

ARC audiobook provided in exchange for an honest review.

Helen McAlpine does a wonderful job with the narration for this book! I really loved her Scottish accent and she speaks very clear and concise so it’s very easy to understand. I liked the plot of the story and how everything takes place in the Scottish highlands over a Christmas holiday. There was lots of drama, twists and turns, and unreliable narrators! I would definitely recommend if you like psychological thrillers and mysteries!

This audiobook was made available for me to listen to and review by Rosie Walker, Bookouture Audio, and NetGalley.

The narrator of this domestic thriller is Helen McAlpine, and I'm fairly certain this is the first audiobook I've listened to narrated by her. I enjoyed her narration and her soft Scottish accent.

This is a fast-paced thriller set over the Christmas holiday in a remote rented house. Sadie has planned a family focused Christmas holiday with her husband, Ted, two  daughters, Charlie & Tamara, Ted's parents, Neal & Patricia, Ted's brother Matt and Sadie's own mother, Julie. Sadie and immediate family arrive early to the rental in the Scottish Highlands so they can have one night as a family before the extended family arrives.

As they are settling in, there's a knock at the door, Sadie opens the door and in walks Ted's ex-girlfriend, Alice, with her own daughter, Natasha who appears to be 12 or so.

Why have Alice and Natasha joined them for the Christmas holiday? Who invited them? Why is Alice really here? What does she want? This is twisty with multiple reveals, a few I guessed correctly, and a major one I did not see coming at all. Very well done. I'll definitely seek out more by this author.

Thank you to Rosie Walker, Bookouture Audio, and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to and review this audiobook. All opinions and viewpoints expressed in this review are my own.

Ex-Girlfriend (audio)
HAPPY PUBLICATION DAY! May 3rd 2024
3.75⭐️

Family, gifts, a secluded house, a dangerous storm, the arrival of an unexpected ex-girlfriend, and a night they might not all survive. Merry Christmas!

Ted and Sadie travel to a house where they will spend Christmas with their parents and their 2 daughters. It’s supposed to be a joyous time making precious memories. Then there’s a knock on the door and surprise! It’s Ted’s ex-girlfriend (the one who got away) and her daughter. What follows is the next two days through Sadie’s POV.

This is a dramatic domestic suspense. It was Lifetime Movie-esque. Great writing and storytelling albeit over the top for sure. The revelation around the half way mark made me question what I had read up to that point. There were times things didn’t really make sense to me and I questioned Sadie’s narration, but it did make sense that only getting one POV would include misperceptions and biased thoughts of that character.

Even though it’s set during Christmas this would be a good gloomy/stormy day read. Read this if you’re looking for twists and turns without being overly realistic or plausible. Just enjoy the ride!

Wonderful narration!

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for this ARC!

"Ex-Girlfriend" by Rosie Walker is a captivating and emotionally charged novel that delves deep into the complexities of past relationships and unfinished business. The story follows two women, Sadie and Alice, whose lives intertwine in unexpected ways.

Walker's writing style is beautifully descriptive, painting a vivid picture of the characters' inner struggles and the intricacies of their relationship. Sadie (Ted) and Alice are multifaceted individuals with their own sets of flaws and strengths. As the story unfolds, we see them confront their past traumas and come to terms with their feelings for each other.

However, some readers may find the start of the book to be a bit slow-paced. While the novel provides some insight into Sadie and Alice’s past, there are moments where you wish for more detailed backstory. The complex dynamics between the two women leave you hungry for more information about their history and what led to their eventual breakup.

Despite these minor drawbacks, "Ex-Girlfriend" shines in its powerful storytelling and the way it explores themes of love, loss, and forgiveness. The unexpected twists and turns keep you on the edge of your seat, eagerly turning the pages to uncover the next revelation.

I would highly recommend "Ex-Girlfriend" to anyone looking for a thought-provoking and emotional read. With its compelling characters, rich storytelling, and poignant themes, this novel is sure to leave a lasting impact on its readers.

Absolutely wonderful narration by Helen McAlpine. Thank you Rosie Walker and NetGalley for the ARC! All opinions belong to me

This is my second book by Walker. The first book of hers I read was The Baby Monitor, which was filled with unexpected twists, and I was hooked on her writing.

It only took me a few hours to read this book, but it was so intriguing that I could not put it down. Rosie has a fantastic talent for forming the most vivid pictures in the reader’s mind.

Sadie and Ted made plans to take a holiday trip with their two kids. Out of the blue, there’s a knock on the door, and guess who it is? Ted’s ex! What could be the reason for her unexpected visit? Did Ted invite her?

The way the ending unfolded took me entirely by surprise. I thoroughly enjoy a well-executed plot twist!

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this book.

In the book My Husband‘s Ex by Rosie Walker we meet Sadie her husband Ted and they’re two girls they’re driving up to Scotland to a country manor in his Home village to spend Christmas with the family. She is planning for the perfect Christmas but on the first day after arriving there’s a knock at the door and it’s his ex-girlfriend claiming he invited her she’s not alone. With some outside interference lots of contradictions in a Maine story that just don’t make sense Sadie doesn’t know who to trust and by the time she does her life will never be the same again. If a book is really good I can listen to it all the way through this one it took three different times I feel like all Sadie did was wine and complain and do Olympic style jumps to opposite conclusions. I believe the book was written so we would root for Sadie but I really was getting so sick of her hemming and hawing and Alice was a top-notch be**** also if the weather was good enough to make his parents leave why couldn’t Allison go with them? I felt Sadie to be spineless I found the book to be repetitive over and over what if he does this all but what if he does that… It was so annoying I came so close to DNFing this book her feelings and emotions were contradictory her personality changed like the weather outside because they’re stuck in the winterstorm. Not to mention when something that my children would find scary and for my husband to go and comfort his ex… That’s just unbelievable no woman would put up with that not even spineless Sadie. I’ve heard the narrator before and think she did a great job but this book and Sadie was just too much I feel like I should be paid for listening to it I think I need to speak to a psychiatrist to see why this character affects me in such a visceral and negative way so spineless. Oh yes the narrator she did a great job and she is the only reason this book gets more than one star I read the baby monitor and love that so head high hopes for this one I was so sadly let down. This review would be 40 pages long if I wrote all my grievances and most of them would probably be about Sadie Alice was a day and I do have opinions about her but what self-respecting woman shows up to her exes house on Christmas Eve? There were some people in the book I did feel bad for and I also liked Sadie‘s mom and his parents but Alice Sadie and a husband to me or a bunch of idiots. I mean they broke their neck whispering around the children when it came to drinking everyone was drinking I just don’t think kids and alcohol mix whether you can control it or not I never did like that something always made me feel cringe when people drink add an event that really is for children. I want to thank Bookoucher audio for my free art copy via NetGalley please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

Ex Girlfriend is a thrilling domestic drama with family secrets and themes of dysfunctional marriage and past relationships.
Sadie and Ted go away for Christmas.
To a cabin in the forest with their two children.
Not long after arriving an unexpected visitor arrives.
Ted’s ex Alice and her daughter, Natasha.
Before any confrontation begins, a raging storm comes.
All are stranded with no power and phone reception.
What happens next is days and nights of twists and turns until the ultimate finale.
Also released under the title My Husband’s Ex this book was quite a good read.
A smooth, exciting, tense, fast paced read with a tight ending.
Great characters and some unlikeable ones but the mix makes for a great story.
Told very well and cleverly written.
A worthwhile read.

"My Husband's Ex" by Rosie Walker is an exciting thriller. The audiobook is narrated by Helen McAlpine with a strong Scottish brogue accent. It took me a while to get used to the accent, but then it was fine. She told the story with a lot of emotion.

Sadie and Ted are on Christmas vacation with their two young daughters at a beautiful old house near his childhood home in the Scottish highlands. Soon after arriving, someone else shows up - Ted's ex-girlfriend, Alice, and her daughter! She said she was invited by Ted. What does she want?

The book is told from Sadie's point of view. Throughout the whole story, there is a very bad storm outside with high winds and heavy rain.

The book is very exciting, but telling you any more would spoil it. I highly recommend this book to thriller lovers!

This was a page turner and I read the entire thing in a day, but I’m undecided how I feel about it overall.

Walker did a great job of setting an eerie, creepy tone throughout the book. I could feel the tension and unease getting stronger every chapter, and the twist wasn’t one I was expecting. But, I also feel like I’m left with more questions than answers, and the ending largely felt rushed.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for a digital ARC!

Wow...this was a total rollercoaster the whole way through and totally messed with my head!
There was so much going on and nothing was ever as it seemed.

When Ted and Sadie head off to a remote Scottish lodge for the perfect family Christmas - and just what they need to repair their marriage - nobody could have guessed how the weekend would pan out.

I wasn't quite sure how I felt about the characters in this to be honest.
I started off liking both Ted and Sadie and deep down, knowing there was something not quite right, but assumed it was just the 'thing' about their marriage, that we didn't yet know.
But as the story developed, I did start to wonder about Sadie, being a therapist, yet not being able to effectively communicate her nor Ted's behaviour.
This set me on edge a little and made me suspicious of whether Sadie was indeed a reliable narrator or not ?

The storyline was intriguing and I was hooked in the main.
I loved the twists and turns that were uncovered as we read and I liked the way the tension ramped up which kept me listening.
The ending did become a little out there but it was exciting to read and wasn't at all as I'd expected.

I love a closed room thriller - not a mystery as such....but pay attention! - and I love thrillers set in remote areas.
The terrible weather and the remote Scottish highland setting was just perfect. The descriptions really set the scene well and I knew things were not going to go well in the end.

Overall a crazy ride,but I loved it!

"A totally addictive Psychological thriller packed with twists" yeah I mean my head didn't know who to blame or what to think throughout the book, it was a rollacoaster from start to finish and I didn't see any of it coming to be fair.

A very easy read and believable characters, they reacted to situations like normal people would and not this fake way that sometimes crop up in book convos. Sadie's inner monologue is exactly what you'd be feeling yourself and because of that you felt her emotioms throughout and were there for the journey with her.

Very nice feel to the story and the atmosphere was definitely built up nicely, I could easily build a picture of the characters and their surrounding in my mind, I felt I was there hearing the storm outside with them. I found myself wanting to read on and find out what happened and who was to blame next, in turn I think I was angry and turned against all the characters in turn with Sadie.

Twists and turns a plenty here, maybe a bit too much towards the end but it didn't take away fron the story, didn't see that end coming but it kindof felt a tiny bit rushed to get it wrapped up and I was left with a few questions why Alice had said a few things to Sadie that didn't quite in my opinion match up to her end motives, but that was just me, it is explained at the end but I was a bit like "but would you say that though, sure there was a better way to get the message over" and also, a few scenes were never mentioned again which I feel needed adressing to not make them weird.

All in all a nicely written and decent read that didn't take to long to get through that offers plenty of wtf didn't see that coming, nor that one or that one moment

"My Husband's Ex" by Rosie Walker is a chilling and thrilling tale of suspense and suspicion that will keep readers on the edge of their seats until the very last page. When the protagonist arrives at a remote cottage in the Highlands for a much-needed Christmas vacation, she is shocked to find her husband's ex-girlfriend, Alice, waiting for them. As tension mounts and suspicions rise, the protagonist becomes increasingly convinced that Alice is hiding something sinister.

Walker masterfully builds suspense throughout the novel, keeping readers guessing as to the true intentions of the characters. The isolated setting adds to the atmosphere of unease, making readers sympathize with the protagonist's sense of dread and fear for her family's safety.

While the plot may seem scattered at times, with twists and turns that leave readers scratching their heads, the intensity of the story makes it a quick and enjoyable read. The protagonist's desperate struggle to protect her family from a perceived threat will resonate with any mother or wife, drawing readers deeper into the narrative.

Overall, "My Husband's Ex" is a gripping psychological thriller that delivers suspense, tension, and surprises in equal measure. Walker's skillful storytelling keeps readers guessing until the very end, making this a must-read for fans of the genre.

I wanted to love this book so bad but unfortunately I found myself frustrated at most of the characters, especially Sadie. I felt extremely underwhelmed from start to finish.

I never DNF a book, I always see it through until the end to give it a fair chance as I believe you can’t rate a book if you haven’t read it all, however this book very nearly put me into a reading slump! Usually I think of every excuse to read just one more chapter of a book that I’m enjoying wheras this book made me think of excuses not to read it and it felt like a chore.

I did however enjoy the short, fast paced chapters and the unexpected unreliable narrator twist which I didn’t see coming. I felt the main plot twist at the end wasn’t believable and I found myself thinking “Really!?”

*Trigger warnings for this one are gaslighting and coercive control.

A big thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author Rosie Walker for this gifted ARC in return for an honest review.

Well, this is someone I would not like to find on my doorstep.

Sadie could not agree more,. It's not only not the right time, because this is meant to be time spend with the family, but because of this person's past with Ted, Sadie's husband.

Why here and why now? Is there still a connection between this woman Alice and Ted? These are questions that popped up in my head straight away. I felt for Sadie, because this is so not what she needed at that moment.

What are Alice's plans? How does Ted react to this all? Not only Sadie's head was spinning, but mine too.

This really is an intense and gripping thriller. The atmosphere the author created is adding to the creepiness of the story: a remote house and a raging storm.

Sadies knows who she does not trust and she is determined to boycott this person's plans and protect her loved ones.

This is a thrilling thriller that made me want to read faster and faster in order to unravel every twist and turn in this book but I did let me be seduced. I read at my normal pace so I could enjoy it to the fullest.  5 stars

Thank you Netgalley for this audio ARC in exchange for an honest review. If you're into domestic thrillers, this will be right up your alley. While I did appreciate the narration by Helen MacAlpine and in particular the highly credible Scottish accent given the Scottish setting of the lodge, I'd have to say that the bad guy/gal reveal was not that credible to me. I mean, you keep expecting for the initial baddie in the story to be proven innocent of all wrongdoing, the twist is not jaw-droppingly incredible, but plain hard to understand based on the information available to you as a reader. All in all, not a bad book, but Big Little Lies with the slowly building momentum and shocking 🤯 reveal this is not.

What I appreciated the most here were the female friendships and the reflection on what having a sibling or even a half sibling might mean for a kid.

I really loved the twists and turns in this book and the fact that they were staring the reader in the face, but the pace of the book made you unable to put the pieces together! As a reader, I was frustrated at how many little things I picked up on and then, ultimately, ignored but it is a credit to a writer that they are able to cause that effect through guiding the reader down another path. I loved this book and I’m excited to check out other books by this author!

What I liked:
-The chapters were short, & this was a very bingeable read.
-There is an unreliable narrator vibe, & it’s really hard to know who to believe.

What I didn’t like:
-The storyline has a lot of build up, & not a lot of delivery.
-The plot twists wasn’t fleshed out enough.
-It wasn’t giving thriller; it really had more rage read, type of vibes.

This is an 'i am not sure' book because it was fine - not bad, not brilliant but could of been so much better. seemed a little rushed in places and was pretty unrealistic.

an easy read though - i wouldn't put others off reading it, just not for me.
