The Perfect Pawn

Rate this book
The O.C. meets Scandal in this binge-worthy series where a street-smart teen navigates a world of power.

After months of surviving alone on the streets, 15-year-old Danica Herrera catches the eye of rising politician Pearce Maddox. Sensing an opportunity to improve his image, Pearce offers Danica a stable home in exchange for playing the dutiful foster daughter publicly in a move to boost his popularity during his mayoral campaign.

Though wary of being used as a political prop, Danica accepts Pearce's offer of a home in his lavish waterfront mansion, if it means finally finding stability. But adjusting to wealth and privilege after surviving on your own is no easy transition. Navigating elite private schools and high society parties, Danica struggles to feel she truly belongs in this glamorous new world.

While grateful for refuge, she wonders if this gilded cage is any better than facing an uncertain future alone. With her future now tied to Pearce's political ambitions, she’s left to question how far she's willing to go to make things work or if she rather stand on her own even if it means giving up the only security she's ever known.

No matter the genre or time, Dominique Davis writes affectionately about unapologetic out-of-the-box women and the people who love them. From a mother-daughter con artist duo to a revenge-driven college student, there’s always something special about her characters, as she believes that all great stories should feature remarkable yet flawed female leads. Writing has been her passion since she could hold a pencil, and nowadays she divides her time between devouring books, fine-tuning manuscripts, and embracing her love for all things pop culture. This is an interesting first installment in a teen series. The characters leave lots of room for drama to develop but are still likable and, for the most part, believable. If you are a teen drama fan, this series will appeal to you. I will be looking out to see what happens to Danica and her new friend Marlowe.
