The Good Day Mice has been expanded from the original to include a visit from Miss Know It All, the charming character whose name is recognizable from the other Butterfield Square stories.
Much better than the other Good Day book I read, this one gives more background on what the orphanage is like, who the people are, etc. though the humans are background to the anthropomorphised mice in the story. Even within such a story it's hard to believe a person would capture a mouse in his kitchen during a dinner party, and allow his guest's son to take it home and make a pet of it. "Oh, sure, Jimmy, here you go! A little souvenir." Mom would just be thrilled. But at least it had a plot and a direction. I was intrigued by the repeated line, that one or other of the mouse parents "didn't shed a single tear" while they worried over Frederick, the captive mouse.
I think my kid will like this - he's really enjoying stories with mice as the main characters right now. It was only mediocre reading as an adult, but it's hard to find chapter books that are complicated enough to hold my kid's attention while not having anything scarier than a mouse getting chased.
