Lost Legacy #1

The Last Wish

Rate this book
No pity. Trust no one. Keep it moving.

My name is Sheena May, and those are my rules. With secrets worth killing for, I'll do whatever it takes to avoid being caged again. That’s why I can't stop running, even if it means I never find out why I have these powers.

When fate drags me back into the magical world kicking and screaming, I’m torn between a demon I can’t resist and a shifter who tells me we belong together. They promise me things I’ve never dared to want, but my secrets remain my own.

Except I’m not the only one hiding things. Soon, old enemies resurface, and magic, betrayal, and power struggles converge. Freedom and love pull me in opposite directions as my life hangs in the balance. By the time I ask the right question it might be too late for us all.

What if wishes really can kill?

The Last Wish is book 1 of the Lost Legacy series, a completed paranormal romance trilogy set in Alana Kay’s Legacy Universe. Expect an emotional tone, expansive worldbuilding, and a mix of fast-burn and slow-burn romance with multiple love interests, some of whom also fall for each other.

ALANA KAY is a romance author with a soft spot for imperfect heroes, tough heroines, and steamy love stories. She made her debut into paranormal romance in 2024 with her novel The Last Wish (Lost Legacy Book One) and completed the trilogy in February 2025.

Alana Kay fell for romance novels in the early aughts after sneaking bodice rippers from her mom’s dog-eared collection of paperbacks. A big believer in happy endings, she likes her love scenes on page, her adventures nonstop, and her magic off the rails. When she’s not typing feverishly, she’s either snuggling with her dog, cats, or husband in sunny Los Angeles or impulsively signing up for a sporting event she’s not nearly athletic enough to commit to.

Author of the completed Lost Legacy series, including The Last Wish, The Last Dream, and The Last Djinn. Her in-progress Radiant Legacy series releases its third book, Fear No Evil, in 2026.

I usually find romantasy lacking in the character development and storytelling departments, but Alana Kay has written a masterclass in romantasy that doesn’t compromise! The characters feel real, likeable, and appropriately flawed. Usually I get lost in these books because the plot meanders too much in favor of relationship, but they intertwine perfectly in The Last Wish. Highly recommend!!

Came for the 🌶️, stayed for the story.

Alana Kay picked the right genre because her talent for storytelling isn’t human. I’m a pretty brutal reader - unless something holds my focus page after page, I put it down - but I finished this book in two days. Sure, I was really in it for the spice but I fell in love with the entirety of this book. The pace of the story, the sweet moments, the scary moments, I loved every page.

The writing is warm, inviting, intelligent, and unique. The author puts you in the moments with the characters and allows every moment to have meaning. It’s incredibly refreshing! (And yeah, this author knows how to write a romance too 🔥)

Seriously, just read it - or at least buy it for your spouse and thank me later 😉

Couldn't put it down!

I loved this book! From the very beginning I was desperate to find out what happens to our little cuddle puddle of demons shifters and more!
There were some genuinely funny moments with some tense serious moments and it's all wrapped up in a little smutty blanket.

I've read books in this genre that felt repetitive and a little trope-y but while this had some tried and true moments that meet the genre head on there was also some fresh moments that I felt were mostly due to the writers voice.

I loved the multiple POVs to get a sense of the characters and i can't wait to see what the heck happens in book two!

I *may* try this one again, but right now it's simply too frufru for me. It's ridiculous how she wakes up in their house and just stays after we keep hearing again and again how she doesn't trust anyone.

2.5

The world, characters, relationships and plot aren’t particularly offensive but they aren’t remarkable either. This is an oversaturated genre and this does nothing to stand out. I will say this is fast moving, sometimes to its detriment. We are blowing through conflicts and obstacles so quickly they don’t have time to leave an impact. I’m tempted to pick up book 2 just for the cliffhanger (I’m nosy).

Wow, this was one of the easiest 5 stars I've ever given. Gonna have a massive book hangover now.

Things I liked:
- the writing was great, really easy to read but had a lot of depth. The dialogue had a lot of subtle humour which is my preference rather than gags everywhere
- the story has a strong, cautious FMC who doesn't lose her brain cells once she meets the guys. I LOVED that
- slow burn MM between childhood best friends (probably my favourite MM trope tbh)
- the FMCs and MMCs all make mistakes and hurt each other but they all communicate and patch things up. I can't stand the miscommunication trope so this was such a breath of fresh air
- the world-building has been mild but what I've seen so far I've liked. The discovery of the FMC's power/species was handled well.
- FMC's "bestie" is such a unique choice, I loved their banter

Things I disliked:
- a little bit more world-building would be nice but it wasn't a deal breaker
- it could do with more secondary characters. The main cast is pretty small at the moment.
-similar to my point above, there aren't any women in this apart from the FMC, and the men's moms (and a late addition at the end). Hopefully this changes in book 2.

Honestly, this was fantastic, and you would have never known it's from a new author.

The FMC is imperfect, even in all her power, and her two MMCs are just adorable. The blossoming of their m/m relationship was a super enjoyable side plot. I'm excited to see who else is added to the group, there's more than one potential candidate.

It's a "unique enough" fantasy world with a respectable amount of world-building, and the pace and plot kept me entertained. I read it pretty quickly, was relieved to find that I could immediately download the second, and am distraught to think about how the third isn't out yet.

2.5 spoilers ahead.

I may be in a horrible book slump and maybe that's why I didn't get into this one but here we go.

I just feel like this book was all over the place. We have multiple people from her past that are out to get her. We have shifters that had tried to harm her and now she's the last djinn and has been taken by a witch. So what 3 different bad guys with no plot movement at all.? Quaid and the other bad guy get their own chapters does that mean alina will too?

After the issues I have with more than one bad guy and no clear path forward come my issues with the characters.
Sheena: her character at the beginning makes sense. She is weary and traumatized, this is her for all of 2 seconds and then she's in love with the guys and has become some "badass" out of nowhere. I like character development but that's a pretty big jump to believe.

As for our guys. I have to say straight up if I had realized we were going to have MM in any form I wouldve probably not read this one. Now before anyone gets upset IDC if men love men etc in books it just is not my thing to read. I also think most authors (this one included) that don't have a ton of experience writing about sexually fluid relationships or MM come at it from the angle of I always did love my best friend like some odd fantasy someone has about their husband and their friend. It just comes off weird but they also spend more time show us chemistry between the MM aspect than they do showing actual chemistry between our main characters.

But alas. You may ask who the silver lining is in this book? Callums brother. He was funny he was engaging and he was a pot stirrer. He made sections of this book reads ks and funny for me and it kept this from being a 2 star read for me.

Overall I like the concept. It's a cool idea but it just felt not flushed out.

Plot: 3/5 • Smut: 3/5 —————-> She’s been on the run basically her entire adult life. She was made to forget everything since before then. While working a job under the table she runs into other supernaturals. Realizing that she goes on the run again.

Her car breaks down, and gets attacked, but the two from before have followed her since one of them is her fated mate. But only he knows that. While unconscious after the attack they take her back to their cabin. She stays there for a while. Feelings surface. She’s told about being fated mates. She crumbles to the succubus (without using his powers) as well.

This ends on a cliffy. Sets you up for book two. Leaves you asking a lot of questions. Which was okay, but it didn’t captivate me like I wanted.

We were so close to getting some MM action. So close. There was kissing, and releasing of the succubus energy, but nothing more. Other than that the smut was actually good. I enjoyed the steamy scenes.

Ok, first impressions: The world-building is fantastic, the connection between the MCs is tangible and believable, and I like all the MCs, except for Quaid.

The FMC is kind and brave, and the MMCS absolutely dote on her. Though they have their moments of stupidity, they do learn to work their way through their issues together and rely on each other. The only MC I cannot stand is Quaid. The entire Hunters Clan (or cult, as the supernaturals believe it is) makes my blood boil. The sheer ignorance and pervasive hatred they exhibit infuriate me, particularly their willingness to kill innocent supes based solely on the potential threat they pose. This makes them unequivocally the villains of this story, and I struggle to muster any sympathy for their cause. Unless the author can orchestrate a profound transformation in Quaid, I remain sceptical about how I could ever come to appreciate his character. To be frank, my feelings toward him are decidedly unkind, and without a significant shift in his narrative arc, it seems unlikely that he will win my favour anytime soon.

However, the plot and pacing of this book are truly exceptional, earning it a well-deserved rating of 4 stars.

The story starts at the bar where the FL works and there she met her 2 MLs. Its weird like starting a story at the middle, it was quite hard to start. Its also weird to have multiple POV in one chapters. I think some POV is not really needed and was just added there for extra page and maybe to provide some insight for the next book.

I feel like the romance is lacking. I don't really care who she ends up with and all the talk about being mate is such a bull for me, i hope they just didn't incorporate the mate since this is RH and there are multiple potential along the way.

Books 2 and 3 is already out and is already available in KU, but I'm torn if I will be picking up the next book as I didn't quite like how book 1 ended.

Sheena, Gideon and Callum (and maybe others)

Told from multiple points of view and includes others who are not part of the harem. Sheena and Gideon are fated-mates. Callum is Gideon’s best friend and later becomes part of the harem. There might be a 3rd guy later but we won’t know until the next book. Sheena has a mysterious power that no one understands. She’s being hunted for it. The guys help her, protect her and love her.

This is a well written, well paced book. Characters are fleshed out.Dialog is interesting and natural. Love both the guys and their backstory. There’s MM/MF/MFM. Smex scenes are hot, but not too drawn out. Ends in a cliffhanger. It looks like this is a trilogy. Can’t wait for book 2.

Great start to the series

Enjoyed reading this book, intriguing storyline and chemistry between Sheena and the guys (although there’s still some confusion there!). Looking forward to reading the next in the series.

good

A little fast on the emotion, but that’s rather understandable with a fated mate. Moves at a steady pace, new faces are introduced as the plot moves along. 1f2m atm, but looks to be at least 2m more. M/M present.

I’m looking forward to the next book.

The characters are complex and well written. I’m writing this two days before the final book in the trilogy is released and I’m already annoyed that I’ll have to wait that long as I’ll probably finish book 2 tonight. The plot is complicated and doesn’t follow shallow tropes.
I also strongly appreciate the excellent editing. That may seem like an odd thing to guarantee all 5 stars, but I read to escape. I was able to lose myself in this book and was never abruptly thrown out of it by jarring editing errors or someone who doesn’t know the difference between into and in to.
That helps me stay in the wonderful world created by the author and is more important than I can explain.

this was great! really underrated. i really like idris and am really excited for the jealousy that will hopefully ensue with quaid. the only thing is that the romance developed really quickly with callum and gideon, so it's more draggy, but the possible romance with other characters is keeping me going! solid read. the covers are beautiful.

This was a quick read and I have no complaints, but no reasons to sing its praises either.

Like 75% of FMCs, Sheera has past trauma and trust issues.
Both MMCs are likeable. I prefer Callum to Gideon, but I've always liked the darker choice. Loved the sexual tension these two had with each other, and looking forward to seeing that dynamic progress.

I assume Idris will join the group, but at this point, I don't know enough about him to have an opinion.

There's a fourth guy, Quaid, who I assume will join in eventually as well. He's only had a few POVs, but the things he does makes him beyond redemption in my opinion. Don't know how he could possibly be redeemed enough to be worthy of joining the group.

This book grabbed me from the very beginning and hasn’t let me go yet! I was looking for a quick smutty read, which it’s definitely that (in the best way), but I also fell in love with these characters because they feel like real people.

If you like reading about characters who have been through a lot and finally find the love they deserve, this book is 100% for you. There’s a grippy, well developed plot and all the shifter/demon/fae goodness you’re looking for in a paranormal world.

I’m eagerly awaiting the next one because I see the writing on the wall for who else gets… recruited 😉… and I’m so here for it!

What an amazing debut novel! It captivated me from the first pages and never let go. The characters are so well-developed and unique. The writing is so so good. The supernatural world intriguing and realistic. The cliffhanger left me wanting to get book 2 asap and see where this story goes next. Highly recommended for all RH, fated mates, urban fantasy lovers.

Rigid. Stilted. Writing style of sharp corners that need to be smoothed out. Cartoonish characters that remove immersion by instead inspiring the imagery of someone sitting down at a laptop: cursor blinking expectantly on their only draft, eyes glazed as they fail in their attempt to articulate what their invented person would say, trying to both remain real and in any sort of consistent character.

There’s a disconnect between the reader and any sort of tangible understanding or relevance to the characters. We’re passively witnessing things happening to them despite it being written in a first person perspective.

Almost robotic in nature, I kept reading on in hopes of the eventual development of humanity that actually seemed to remove mine in the process. They sometimes laugh, but I couldn’t ever glean what particularly would have inspired that reaction.

It needs humor. Actual humor. I can’t think of a more appropriate or emergent addition to this that would also supply endearment. A shared incredulity with the audience about the situation beyond the fact that the guys are hot would go a long way, as well.

Gideon’s hair is brown but then it’s blonde. Okie dokie. Guess making him a shapeshifter is a good patch for plot holes.

It gets better around 25%, but then again, I did lower my hopes in order to make it that far.
It rapidly picks up in pace and quality of content once you disperse of those pesky expectations. The spice is a ‘why the hell not’ type of situation that happens frequently and without censure.

The eventual cliffhanger is enticing enough to potentially suffer through another struggled beginning.

I must confess that the feminist in me enjoys a reverse harem/why choose story from time to time. But I also like my spice with a side of actual plot. This book delivered. Our characters are paranormals, or supernaturals as this author calls them, living alongside us regular humans. The world building and character introductions are gradual, which I prefer as info dumps make me lose interest immediately. The FMC is on the run from something or someone, so we have intrigue right off the bat. We meet 2 MMc's early also, and they're besties! (Who honestly gave low-key Cassian and Azriel vibes for the ACOTAR fans.) And there's the fated mates trope, which is a personal favorite. Who can resist a guy who will always be faithful and treat you like the absolute queen that you are? Not me.

The MMC's are alpha males but also cinnamon rolls for our girlie. The spice is....spicy. 🌶🌶🌶🌶 'Can I stay?' had me giggling and fanning myself at the same time. And there's also some UNexpected sexual tension that I will not spoil for you but am definitely wanting to see where that goes.

The FMC has a unique power, and she has a 'ticking clock' hanging over her head and her life. By the end, yes-a cliffhanger, I was invested in the story and our characters. Will definitely be reading the next book in the series.

Final thoughts:
Idris is Thranduil. I can not explain why and will not be taking questions.
I fear the Winchester brothers may be involved at some point.
Demons and shifters and hunters, oh my!
