Hellhounds of Paradise Falls #2

How to Hack a Hellhound

Rate this book
Quinton
Getting kidnapped and held hostage in a human trafficker’s basement was not on my bingo card. Getting rescued by a paranormal being was also not on my bingo card. (Apparently I needed to trade in bingo cards.) The guy who took me may be dead, but I know there are more people behind the operation, and I plan to shut it down. If I need to get the help of one of the creepy glowing eyed dudes to do it, I will. It turns out Liam is incredibly sexy and really good with technology, too. He may be great at hacking into computers, but I’m determined to hack my way into his life.

Liam
Ever since I looked into the feisty human that Dexter rescued from a basement, I’ve been a little… obsessed. Is it wrong that I watch him all the time and hack into all his technology? I’m just trying to keep him safe. After all, he’s sticking his nose into some troubling areas, and I can’t deal with the thought of him getting taken again. Of course I offer to help him when I discover his mission to take down a trafficking ring, although my motives aren’t exactly pure. The little human attracts me in a way that I can’t explain, and my hellhound thinks he’s mine, whether he wants to be or not.

Emotionally traumatized, feisty vigilante and hacker hellhound fall in love; Liam has Quinton under surveillance 24/7 and will protect him; Quinton doesn’t mind being watched if the dude with the glowing eyes will keep him safe; there’s torture and death (but only of really bad people); hellhounds have tails, and they know how to use them.

RATING 4.5 STARS

How to Hack a Hellhound is book two in the Hellhounds of Paradise Falls series by Shannon Mae. Even though each book in this series is about a different couple, there is a chain of events that carries over from the first book which would help you to understand and bond with the characters. So for the best enjoyment, I would recommend reading them in order.

Quinton was rescued along with Toby and Aiden in the first book by the men that Quinton has now realized aren’t exactly humans. But he’s fine with that because he’s alive and free because of them. Quinton’s go to way to communicate is with snark and attitude. It’s also his way of masking his emotions. He and his now roommate, Aiden are working at a coffee shop but while Aiden’s way of dealing with his trauma is with therapy, Quinton’s is with revenge. He wants to find the trafficking ring that took them and bring them down.

Liam is part of a pack of hellhounds that are also brothers, not by blood but by the bond they share. They are all relocating to Paradise Falls because it’s a place that just feels like home to them. Liam is a computer hacker. And he’s good at it. Ever since Liam first saw Quinton when he was rescued, something about him called to his inner hound. He was drawn to him and felt the overwhelming need to protect him in every way. Since computers were his thing, what better way than to put cameras everywhere that Quinton stayed, work, and home, to keep track of him. Especially when he discovers what Quinton’s plan is!

Quinton is so sarcastic and snarky and Liam loves it. It’s like their love language. And I loved how Liam empowered Quinton in every way. Both in setting the pace of their relationship and in dealing with the bad guys.

This was fun and steamy and sweet and full of snark. I’m loving watching these guys find their mates. The next book will be Aiden’s and I already know who has fallen for him. And I’m loving watching the bad guys pay for what they did! I can’t wait for the next book!

I would like to thank GRR for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

DNF @ 51%

unfortunately i just don't think this narrative style is for me. while i do love the hellhound pack and the touch of supernatural to this, at 51% i was STILL not vibing with the characters, especially q. i see a lot of people loved this installment and that's great! but sadly i'm just not able to get into it.

All said, How to Hack a Hellhound was a lot sweeter than I expected it to be, especially considering that the hellhounds were focused on shutting down a sex trafficking ring that targeted one of the MCs, Quinton. Quinton's feisty personality was the perfect match to Liam's buttoned up, somewhat oblivious one. Quinton didn't mind Liam's stalker tendencies and I loved how open and honest they were with each other and how accepting Liam was of Quinton's somewhat codependent relationship with Aiden.

These stories are light, fluffy, and easy to read. I genuinely liked all of the hellhounds as well Toby's friends. The relationships are all a little insta, but that's intentional and what keeps the story from being too angsty or drawn out. It's perfect for when you need a break from all the heavier stuff. The audiobook features the voices of Iggy Toma and Alexander Cendese. Cendese's voice for Dexter in the first book was beyond obnoxious, but he managed to tone it down for Liam. 3.5 stars, rounded up

“Do you like my pretty dick?” I asked. “You better be stroking yours, too. That’s what creepy stalkers do. Did you ever get off to me before?” I chuckled. “Probably not. You probably weren’t sure if it was polite or not. It isn’t polite, but that’s ok, because you’re my creepy stalker, so you don’t have to be polite with me. No boundaries necessary.”

They're so cute. 😅

4.5 stars!

I liked this one a lot more than the first book.

Quinton was rescued from a human trafficker in the first book by Dexter, Liam’s brother basically, and so Liam decided to keep an eye on Quinton to make sure he was doing okay.

I loved Liam soo much!! He was so sweet and oblivious. I thought it was funny how he had no qualms about stalking Quinton and he didn’t think he was doing anything wrong. I loved how he was immediately obsessed with Quinton the moment he sees him. It was so cute how naive he was when it came to human things. He was such a great character!

Quinton was super funny. He was the grumpy to Liam’s sunshine. He was so damn prickly but he had his sweet moments. I would have liked to see more of his sweet moments though, his prickliness did get kind of annoying after a while even though Liam loved when he got like that. They were really cute together though.

There was no OM drama at all. There was just some platonic cuddles with Quinton and his roommate/best friend who has nightmares after being kidnapped and held captive for over a year. I did like that Liam still let Aiden come cuddle with them when he had a nightmare. He didn’t touch Aiden and made it clear he never would but he let Aiden and Q cuddle. So he was obsessive but not possessive which was fine for me in this book.

The half star is missing because I personally could have done without Quinton reminding us of how much of a manwhore he was before he was kidnapped. We get it, you’ve had a million hookups (his words) and we get it, you hooked up with a new guy every week. No need to rub our faces in it.

Anyway I can’t wait for the rest of guys books. I’m definitely looking forward to Atlas and Aiden. Also I’m super curious about Wilder and if he will get a book.

NO CHEATING
NO OM DRAMA
NO THIRD ACT BREAK UP
TALK OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING
KIDNAPPING AND DRUGGING (not by MC)
TORTURE (off page)
MURDER

Book 1 explained how the Hellhound pack of Dex, Liam, Jude, Corbin and Atlas were scattered , how all of the hellhounds sent souls on to the afterlife, that hellhounds don’t age and they don’t have a homebase pack.. until Dex moves to Paradise Falls and falls in love with Toby. Oh and Hellhounds can mark and mate their lovers and tie their life forces together.

Dex also rescued Quinton from a very bad man in book one.

You know what, I say it for almost every series -go and read book 1 if you haven’t already !!

Quinton works at a coffee shop, he’s a snarky little barista/ coffee employee.

“You could chalk that attitude up to me being kidnapped, held hostage in a basement by a human trafficker, and then being rescued by some… being that wasn’t quite human. And let’s not forget being rehomed like some kind of stray animal afterwards.”

Quinton lives with Aidan , another ‘stray’ rescued from a bad man, coffee shop owner Cassius and his boyfriend Kushiel. Aidan is like his twin brother - that’s how close they are.

Yeah … there’s a lot of characters to wrap your head around but that means lots of books to look forward to reading.

Quinton is determined to bring down the whole ring of human traffickers that were involved with his kidnapping.

Liam, the hacker and ‘big brother’ of the hellhounds, is also focused on Quinton and the people who hurt him. Oh big brother! That’s a good one, because as well as family it fits as his hacker role and all 1984 ‘big brother is watching you’. I’m sure there’s a cool word that describes this perfectly.

Omg this line is hilarious- “Dex wasn’t the brightest flame in the house fire” Liam and Quinton both have this dry humour that I love 🤣

Quinton is a lot of things - feisty, prickly , vengeful but he is no hacker. He instead decides to go to the nightclub where he met his kidnapper.

Liam is captivated by Quinton, watches him without him knowing , and so is also at the nightclub.

Aww what a cute-meet story!

Except … they don’t really meet but it’s a good thing Liam was there.

“Cassius wants to know what’s going on with Q and Aiden. He’s pissed. He did adopt them, and then you stole and rehomed them.”

I really do enjoy this comedic writing.

Yes, so Quinton and Aidan now live at the pool house of one of the hellhounds properties. I’m not sure if they know this yet. It is fully kitted out

Quinton and Liam finally meet properly and it’s exactly the hilarious interaction you’d expect from a hellhound and a human. Misunderstandings aplenty but Quinton is just rolling with it. As you do. Doesn’t hurt Liam is tall dark and sexy as hell. Liam is finding humans difficult to navigate face to to face, especially this one.

Aww cute nicknames for each other - creepy stalker and hellcat.

Liam is all onboard for working together with Quinton to bring down the human traffickers and for Quinton to have his vengeance. Liam finds that hot, his sexy little hellcat ready to claw at the evil men.

They become closer… they are kinda perfect for each other. Sexy stalker Liam with his sweetness and obliviousness counteracting Hellcat with attitude Quinton. Liam is not jealous of Quintons close relationship with Aidan either.

“It wasn’t sex,” I said automatically. “No,” he answered quietly. “It was intimacy.”

“I felt like I was in over my head, and not with the human trafficking shit. I was falling for Liam. Somehow, my sexy stalker had hacked his way into my frozen little heart, and I had no idea what to do about that.”

A trap is laid for the ring of human traffickers , with Quinton as bait. This doesn’t go to plan but it still ends up fine. Bad guys are caught, victims rescued - all is right in the world . Liam and Quinton are mated and in love.

“I scoffed. “I’m not sure how I’ll manage to put up with you for all eternity, but somehow I’ll do it.” Then I climbed into my sexy stalker’s lap and gave him a kiss.”

"𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘪𝘮. 𝘔𝘺 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘪𝘮. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘧 𝘋𝘦𝘹 𝘨𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘬𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘢 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯, 𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥𝘯'𝘵 𝘐?"

After meeting Quinton in book 1 post rescue, I knew I had to have his story. He was such a snarky grump and I thought he could use an overprotective hellhound after what happened to him. Well folks, if you think Dex was overprotective of Toby, then you ain't seen nothing yet. Liam definitely wins that game with the fact that he basically has cameras on Quinton 24/7. I am on the fence with both Aiden and Quinton when it comes to Liam's tactics. Creepy or sweet? I think it's both.

"𝘏𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘮𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘪𝘱 𝘮𝘺 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘬𝘪𝘴𝘴 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘺 𝘭𝘪𝘱𝘴. 𝘐 𝘸𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘧 𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘬𝘪𝘴𝘴 𝘮𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘰𝘳 𝘪𝘧 𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘸 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘮𝘺 𝘦𝘺𝘦𝘴."

I did like how even though Quinton was a sarcastic little shit who liked to poke, he never went too far into mean territory. He complained about the cameras and the breaking and entering Liam seemed to enjoy, but he never made Liam take them down or told him to stop watching. For the first time in a long time Quinton felt truly safe and that was the best gift anyone could have ever given him after what he had been through.

Liam was absolutely adorable in his cluelessness. He couldn't fathom why stalking his mate was anything but a normal thing to do. To be fair, it worked between those two, but to everyday humans it was taking things too far by a mile. It made me laugh every time he would get confused when something was pointed out to him as him acting creepy. He just wanted to make sure his mate was safe, what could be wrong with that?

As much as I loved Liam and Quinton, I am also excited because I think I figured out the remaining couples. We all know that Aiden and Atlas are next, because the preorder for How to Tame a Hellhound is already live. But based on a few little glimpses I am thinking it's going to be Seb with Corbin and Jude with the sheriff. That leaves Josh and Wilder leftover as possibly the last couple. I can't wait to see if my guesses are correct!

Really cute and fun again - just what I needed!

I really loved Q and his sass and snark! He was so different to Toby, and I loved how he was convinced Toby was some kind of vampire 😂

Liam was much more serious than Dex, and I do think I preferred Q and Liam over Dex and Toby, just because Toby and Dex are like mega himbo's!

I also found it really funny how none of the hellhounds seem to understand personal boundaries - Liam not understanding why a camera in the bathroom was creepy was hilarious!

I do think my favourite hellhound is Corbin though, I find him super interesting and I'm looking forward to his story.

The hellcat and the sexy stalker. This book handled certain themes with a gentle approach that I deeply appreciated. It was fun and had some deep thoughts interspersed with the lightness. I really like the 'obsessed with each other'/insta attraction/mate thing going on in this series. On to the next one!

Audio:
5 stars for Iggy Toma
3.5 for Alexander Cendese (he does the main guy well, but I don’t love his other characters voices)

Book: 3 stars

You could read this as a standalone if you wanted. I did forget most of what happened in book one haha!

I enjoyed the beginning, but I didn’t really feel a connection between the main characters as much as I should. It was entertaining but it did get a little slow in the middle/end.

This was one of my most anticipated books of the new year, and it totally lived up to the hype! It was just as funny, sweet and exciting as the previous book. I loved Liam and Q so much. Liam being all sweet and patient with Q and loving and accepting every part of him. And Quinn with his strong, snarky attitude. It was fun getting to see his recovery. I love the relationship he has with Aiden, and all the fun side characters. Can’t wait to read the next one!

initially: Listening to this. Loving that Toby is still oblivious and makes it sound like he's inviting Q over for an orgy not a get together with his friends. Thankfully his friends assure Q that Toby is lost to writer plotting and all is okay. Well, as okay as things are in Toby's head.

After finishing: How to Hack a Hellhound is quirky like the first book, my favourite to date - How to Flirt with a Hellhound. It's sweet, with kinda, sorta gritty moments that are toned down. I liked both the MCs but Q and Aiden's trauma bond gives the reader some tender moments between the two of them that made this book better. The author gave both men the opportunity to cry when they relived or thought of something that was sad. They'd both been hurt and, yes, real men cry, so I liked seeing those moments on page. Kudos to the author.

Narration: Not going to lie, I started out with the audiobook, I'd preordered it, but Alexander Cendese could not do secondary characters well. I loved his narration of Dex in book #1 but the way he voiced Dex here was beyond disappointing. He sounded like Woody from Earth Girls are Easy. So I switched to reading Liam's chapters and listening to Quinton's. Toma is always good at narration.

There was a significant overuse of the same words, fuck is one of them, weirdo is another one. Stalker was very overused as well. Oh, and morning breath was an obsessive running theme. I kept thinking, for the love of god, why?!?!

Overall I am quite hooked on this series now. I like found family as a theme in my books and the Hellhounds of Paradise Falls delivers that. There are some good characters to go on with as well.

This is just such a cute series. Lots of fun, very low angst, just a nice read. There are some dark themes, with the Hellhounds tracking down evil people, but a lot of the more gruesome acts are done off page.

This book is about Quinton, our resident snark with a bad attitude and clueless, lovable Liam the hacker. Liam has been stalking (protecting) 'Q' since he was rescued by Dex (previous book). Q has a huge desire to find and take out the big baddies in the human trafficking ring, and teams up with his sexy stalker to do the job. The banter is pretty good between these two - Q is just so darn snarky and Liam just shrugs it off and laughs and calls him adorable. Just too cute.

There are characters in this one that are set up for the next book, and I cannot wait.

So funny and good! Quinton is so sassy and takes no crap for anyone and I love it! Liam is so devoted and infatuated but like the rest of the hellhounds (except Jude) he’s absolutely clueless on human boundaries and it’s so funny!

The friendship between Quinton and Aiden and its acceptance by Liam really took center stage for me here. It was so precious and wonderful. Can’t wait to start Aiden’s book!

I think I'm going to bow out of this series. While the books aren't bad, I'm really struggling to actually find a connection with these characters. Liam's POV was rough for me at first. When he talked it felt very robotic and was off-putting. It did get better as the book went on, so that was nice, but it wasn't enough to make me want to keep reading the rest.

Loved it! I adore the hellhound gang & their associates and mates! Liam is almost as clueless/oblivious as Dexter is, but not quite to that extent. Q is most definitely sassy, snarky, and smart, but still he gets kidnapped. Shannon Mae had me laughing often while reading this story, along with blushing from the steamy bits (love the tails), fretting & anxious at times & totally relieved and facepalming over some stupid thing or other that one of the packmates is doing. I can't wait to read more in this series, this world. The characters, situations, abilities, beings, bad guys & shenanigans combine to make this one amazing series, and one fabulous book! Can't wait to read about Aiden & Atlas.

Yeah, so all you really can say is that these hellhounds are something uniquely special. We are now post rescuing of Quinton & Aiden from the sex traffickers and they are now besties for life. Quinton is a beautiful sass monster out for vegence for what was done to him and who knows how many other men. Too bad he doesn't really know how to go about it, enter Liam, the resident hellhound hacker who may like Q, and his feisty side a little too much. In true Shannon Mae fashion buckle up, you are in for a wild ride. Be prepared to question why does this works so well? Seriously, how are these two so perfect for each other? With a fun revenge plot to take down the bad guys, get ready for a wild ride from start to finish.

Read for a group challenge. Liam and Q. Fun pairing with Liam being all about the surveillance and Q being okay with it. Bit of Aiden, chaos with Jude and a bit of the starter trio. Saw the kidnapping coming but it was funny how Q assumed he'd been air tagged. Sweet couple. The writer felt a bit creepier in this one.

Quinton: Q, “Hellcat”, Rehomed Stray Human

My Notes:
- I love Liam, but I am still dying for book #3, give me more Atlas<33333
- Funny like the first but more serious too, I really enjoyed it. The physical intimacy took longer to get to it felt like, but we were able to see a connection being built more. We didn’t necessarily need that with the first though since the traumatic events weren’t as present when they met and they met before the book began.
- The sheriff? Do we have a mate for ? Will he be hard to get??
- Next book is Aiden & FluffyAtlas. To say I am excited is an understatement.
- The crows? I am going to guess that are mates too.
- I don’t know if it’s a stretch or not, but I am hoping that make the last pairing, I would hate for them to be left out.

I'm really sad to just put it on 2 stars, especially because book 1 was a 4 star for me.
But somehow this was just ... not it :/ not for me anyway, because I guess I'm not into the archetypes in this book? I'm still very interested in the next books to come, because i LOVE many of the other characters, but Liam and Q just didn't do it for me.

It was still a fun read, i loved that Toby/Dexter were in it too as all the other NPCs from Book 1. IM REALLY CURIOUS about the next pairings, because there were some new ones teasered :3 I can't wait for Atlas/Aiden, and I fucking hope there will be a Jude/Sherrif (because of the annoying each other, thats one of my fav tropes) and a Seb/Caw Caw (bcs duh crows?). I'm not so sure about Wilder and Josh in book 4, but we will see.
But yeah, it was easy to read, the jokes were fun, i fucking adored how Q and Aiden (and later Liam) were to each other, because of the trauma and shit, it was so damn cute.
Also the webcam-scene? That was hot.

But sadly that was it. I like the golden retriever trope and the grumpy/sunshin archetype too, but here it was kinda.. meh, i dunno. Q and Liam were like... so flat. Q is just angry and snarky, and thats his whole character. It was kinda a let down after Toby, whos def a deeper char - not much, but still, and i liked his quirkiness more. And Liam just is meek and mild about EVERYTHING. I mean big yes to consent and shit, but duh... come on.
Then there was the problem with the gore :/ i had expectations, because even tho the author said she's squamish herself, there were quite some gore and description in book 1 (duh, bcs toby ask for it i know), but they are hellhounds, they are supposed to torture bad souls :/ and there was no descriptions, nothing. I was really meh about that.
The whole sex trafficking story was also not mine, it was kinda... lame? or badly made, or too much rushed for my liking? So yeah, that was more of a *shrug* im not interested in that backstory thingie.
But the one thing that made me downgrade it from 3 to 2 stars is the revenge thing.

Q's whole character is around having revenge for being kidnapped in book 1. He's SOOO ANGRY all the time, which i get. But then we're doing the "oh I won't stoop so low and take revenge on you, because that would mean I'm on the same level as you, mimimi." I HATE that. If someone kidnapped me and wants to sold me into sex, dude, i would fucking stap his dick with knifes and cut it off and shove it into his fucking throat. I hate this stupid moral shit, you need to be better than the culprit. Fuck no. Take revenge, it's justified, especially in this circumstance.

So yeah, that was where i thought. ok, that pair is not for me, that theme is not for me. But I'm still waiting happily for Atlas and Aiden.
